Get these my 7 year old loves them and flew though them in days
Agreed! My girls (5 & 6) L O V E these books and Aaron Renyolds in general! Next up is to get the figures and get them painting! Thanks Squidmar for the rec!
This is an interesting perspective
I do think these paints will benefit beginners and true to their name, speed jobs that a little more basic.
I think you guys are so high level that the benefits don't shine through quite as much and integrating them into your tool box might be harder.
I think you nailed it at the end: this was designed from the ground up. It’s not Contrast, or Quickshade, or anything else. Speedpaint is Speedpaint. But we are honored to have you review the set! Squidmar, think your followers would like a giveaway? You say the word ;)
I think they would!
I don't know if the other followers would, but I'd love to get my hands on a set to run through some tests! I can bring them over to my hobby painting team and let them run a muck and record the results!
I would love to get my hands on an early copy! I work at my local game store and I've been eagerly talking to my coworkers about Speedpaint, it would be great to actually try them out to help our customers out at release!
Yes please
What we would really like is an answer as to why so many of the colors look identical while having different names. Was there an issue on the bottling end or what? I was going to by the big set, but right now it looks like I'd just be wasting money.
Lucas is a really talented artist. That orc looks incredible and it seems it didn’t take him long at all
That Orc turned out niceeeeeeee. Agree with you on the bloody red, that's a definite keeper! :-)
You turned out niiiice 😘😘
Can we get another colab with you two? I suggest a large model painted in grim dark!
"Orc" is Gouge: Demon Brute Hunter Hero, His skin has several veins in it, to be painted to really make his muscles pop.
the "tongue demon" is Gluttony: Lord of the Demon Side of Limbo: Eternal War, Pledge Manager will open soon so you can grab a copy. check KS for links.
this is the most critical and honest review ive seen for the speedpaints. thank you guys for your blunt honesty. im super excited about snagging myself the big box in march. hoping they do some last minute fixes on some of the issues you guys talked about. but even still, im getting these because $4 a bottle vs $8 contrast pots is worth it. even if a few of the colors leave something to be desired. spilled a pot of black templar contrast the day after i bought it. there is a special place in hell for whoever designed those damn things.
I def see a bright future for this box, maybe not all paints but i'm very much looking forward to even more paint variants :)
You guys have taken IKEA paints and managed to make things look amazing...so not surprised that the Speed Paints and you guys still turned out amazing work.
Putting them in the hands of a begginer would be a good test. Someone already painting at competition level will likely get good results regardless.
Opening with "Sponsored by Fart Quest" I was not expecting that.
Like you said just another tool! Don’t need a whole line of them just need probably the bigger ones like the black/ grey. Good to see there is a variety of opinions on these!
Absolutely, a few ones to start is good so find your usage for them!
The skin color looks to have the same issue as I had with Guilliman Flesh when zenithal highlighting black with the Titanium White Liquitex Ink - it just looks like it slides off and stains instead of painting color on. Then I realized the finish on Liquitex was reaaaaaally smooth. When I switched to ProAcryl Bold Titanium White, the finish was a bit more chalky and the paint had a lot more chance to "take". I'd love to see how the Speedpaints look on slightly more matte / chalkier white underpaint.
They're supposed to be painted onto a matt white udercoat, the white on the corpse in the video looks smooth
The videos are so great. Atmosphere, personalitys, seems good amount of honesty and advertising. Keep it going :)
Unless you're an unapologetic paint snob they look just fine for getting paint on minis and minis on the table.
Thats true of all paint and helps no one
Lukas is amazing as always. Definitely picking up some of those vibrant colors. Loved the Orc and whatever the second thing was that he painted. That turquoise is gorgeous. Really liked the yellow on the elves too.
"We tried to use it like X, but it's not X". Very insightful. Definitely worth an 8min video.
Squidmar, your and Lucas' passion and enthusiasm for colour is inspiring. Thank you for another excellent video.
not gonna lie going straight into the video with "sponsored by fart quest" was so funny I almost died from choking on my water
Thanks for the review. I use contrast paints mostly for browns to cover areas I painted other colors, and their incredible coverage has always been what I like most
From other reviews, some AP speed paints work better than GW contrast paints, and vice versa. It'd be great to utilize the best of both ranges to produce the best results. You guys should do a paint vid experimenting with both to demonstrate them separately and then together in a combination that allows both paint lines to shine
This.
@@TheArmyPainter Hey AP! Wow haha. Cant wait to get my hands on this set when I have the chance, quality stuff you got here
You are painting Limbo Eternal War. Great I’ve waited for this so long xD
Your review is greatly appreciated.
I just paint to get them on the table, so I'm sure speed paints will help me save time. Thank you so Your painting skillz are fantastic.
A nicely balanced review of what looks to be a great tool in the painter's toolbox. It's easy to get tribal over sticking to a paint brand or hating on a company. GW contrast paints does the basics really well imho but top artists such as yourself really unlock the extra potential by experimenting. Thanks for the vid.
Great video as always! I plan on picking up a set to try out. The Orc looked great!
Really looking forward to these, exactly what I'm after as someone who just wants a decent effect quickly and easily to get them on the tabletop
They'll be killer for you!
Definitely picking up the mega set. I have backlog of couple of hundred board game miniatures that need to be painted and the results look quite satisfactory.
I like army painter paints and I’ll die on this hill
First brand I ever got before watching any tutorials or knowing about this whole community, still none of the others i tried came even close tbh.
Man I love when guys add the stuff they use in the videos, in the description, much thanks.
It's fun seeing all the mini painting community try these out right now. Hopefully I can get a set soon also.
Until now most of the reviews been synthetic tests. Nice to see some real painting, that’s what matters.
Really like the approach you did on these with your method and how honest you are. The models look badass even if it's not for the way you paint guys, amazing!
the approach is quite useless... If you use paper to check viscosity, why speaking about the color gradient???
@@Manlio.Cipullo I dont know if I understand your point, I may check again the video for context. By approach I meant that they try the paint the same way they would do with contrast in their painting method to know if it works or not. It seems to work better than contrast with regular brush and worse with airbrush, I think it's great to know
@@christiansebine7316 I was speaking about the comments on the color gradient and the fact that they stated those looked the same as others from Army Painter lineup... When in that case you must check viscosity and consistency on the paper... Also this kind of product is quite useless in the airbrush, more so if you add airbrush tinner or other paint...
@@Manlio.Cipullo I see your point now mate! In the case of the flat surfaces as they say you can have a loot of disgusting pooling and you avoid with the airbrush, it may be better if you just use well pigmented inks instead but it looks cool though
Great review. How do they take to being used as a glaze. Can't wait for them to be released so I can mix it with glaze medium
I like the Minis from Limbo Eternal War :-) That looks great !
I think you meant low viscosity. Viscosity is resistance in a liquid. So high viscosity is like slow flowing lava
A nice honest review with the good and bad points. I like this!
Hey man, good review but do you have any thoughts on the reactivation issue thats recently came to light? AP are now suggesting people clear seal between coats which doesnt sound speedy...
I look forward to trying it out.
Thank you for this.
It seems like their primary usage is as more of a high contrast wash effect. So maybe more as a basecoat over zenithal shading, then pick out details and highlights later.
I am excited to try it out, seems like it will be really good for quick batches for rank and file.
Nice review on the paints and great job on those Limbo Miniatures figures👍
I love using contrast as a shade or base colour. It feels like painting with numbers and I like that aspect of it.
Looking forward to what people do with these new paints. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
To be fair I think you guys could paint anything incredibly with just orange juice probably
Great review - very important information, thanks!
I recently picked up the hobby of assembling/painting minis. I wasn't sure where to start so I picked up some speed paints. I'm used to painting with acrylics on all sort of mediums, so I was curious about these. The tones are okay for the most part, but I noticed I have to brush a few layers to really get the depth I want. I mixed standard acrylic paint with the speed speed and was able to get a more viscous paint, more depth, and needing less to cover the area. It worked great!
Are all those paints just as saturated as the green and red? Is there any way to just using the paints in the set to make more natural greens and browns?
Happy New year to all the Squidmar gang and long life to the mini passion !👍❤
I like how Contrast paint got pretty much pooped on by all of UA-cam when it launched. And then people started to experiment and get great results.
I bought ny first a few weeks back and use the uh... "Wychwood bark"? with a regular brush on leather details. And it workd great.
It dries with ready edge highlights.
I mean ofc you can work more in it. But its covers well and looks pretty decent after just one layer, so then you can do a bit more work and BAM.
Or when Scale75 said that Instant isn't the same as Contrast, watch the video, and then it was released and everyone said “you tricked us, this isn't the same as Contrast”. 95% of people are just mad as a sandwich sandwich sandwich.
It was difficult to control because of its LOW viscosity, not its high viscosity as you said at the end.
Haha its funny when they say "If you can do this better then we do" and then they are like the best of the best.. Love your work Squidmar and Lucas!
Excited to try these I have most the modelling kits and tools but not tried the paints.
Thanks for the review, I’ve been planing to pick these up, and since I tend to thin down my contrast to use it as a glaze+recess shade this might be ideal.
Finally some proper testing and criticism!
How much do you thin contrast and these speed paints, for air brush ?
Hmm. I generally airbrush a greyscale to paint out the light (is this zenithal?). Would this be a good paint to use over that? Or is contrast better? Currently just using 2-3 coats of citadel washes over airbrush base..
Help!! Re: Zealot Yellow - for me, it wicked UP channels in the mini adjacent to where I was painting it (like, the inside lining of a coat where it meets the body). Even when I removed most of the paint from the brush first it still wicked a small line upwards - against gravity - for about 8-9mm, and also spread out over an already-painted patch adjacent to where I was painting.
How have you found it in this regard? I've used the Maguc Blue as well, and that's performs perfectly on the same undercoat, with same amount of shaking.
Videos like this one inspired me to get a starter kit of Speedpaint and begin my painting journey. I created this channel to share my experience with everyone. Hope you enjoy it! 😀
What people actually want is a cheaper alternative to Contrast. If those paints are not that, then it’s like the Instant Paints: expensive washes that are sold by pretending they are something they are not.
Hi, I know I am out of topic, but I was wandering what music (if any) you an Lukas listen to when painting? I am just curious 😅
What was that 4 armed demon mini ? What line of minis is it from?
I think you've grown accustomed to what Contrast has become and not what they were supposed to be. GW originally marketed them as a one coat paint for speed painting and that's not been my personal experience with them or what I've in seen in general by mini painting UA-camrs, not to mention how some Contrast colors have a much different consistency and are almost like a thin gel instead of acrylic paint. Based on what I've seen of the Speed Paint by various people on UA-cam, they seem to be much closer to a true one coat paint, settling in recesses and pooling from high points better to get brighter highlights and darker shades than Contrast.
Thank you for painting those Limbo Eternal Wars minis, looks great. I am waiting to see more paintjob on those minis.
The Pledge Manager of their last kickstarter should open very soon.
Glad to see that someone else recognized the Limbo figures! Gluttony came out the best from above (though that flesh tone…yeah…).
they need to sell those as stl!
@@BrianKelly_LettheGamesBegin I am eagerly waiting for my Oblivion pledge to arrive this year (hopefully). These minis really look awesome (and I most definitely won´t go for an orcish style for the demon Gouge)
Hey Squidmar where did those minis you painted in the video come from?
I've been wanting to paint a Thousand sons army for the longest time, it looks like the blue from this range would be perfect for it, time to save the video and make a mental note
The orc looks incredible Lucas did a fantastic job!
I think that's crazy cause I just got mine and my skin color absolutely killed it and my browns looked very different. I did use brush and I agree with the thoughts on red and the fact the flow more like a wash.
What models are you using I would love to get some
Gotta say from what I saw the set looks like a really handy set of washes maybe rather than what I'd use contrast paints for, at least out of the pot. Might pick a few up
I can't wait to get these paints. I think a big problem with any artist is when they find something they. Love they find it hard to let go and always compare things back to their love. I wonder if you would get on better if you 1. Gave it more time and testing, you love contrast as you are used to that medium and can work around its flaws , and 2. Go into testing and using the speed paints as a new fun thing where you just play and experiment and not compare and try and get it to do what other paints may or may not do. It's a hard thing to do as we humans love to compare things.
what style of music is that in the background?
0:20 as an American, that quote gave me goosebumps.
I always considered contrast paints to be a "wash with a lot of color." So I'm curious to try the speed paints for myself.
Honest question: how long to you spend on each of these minis? They are incredible
Hey Squidmar! I just finished watching the video that you have where you go through all of the mini's that you have in backlog. I would love to see you pick a collection and do another 24 hourr paint challenge to see how many you could get through in 24 hours!
No reactivation issues? What basecoat did you use?
Thank you for the review. It was interesting to see your opinion on it.
where is the orc model from?
I really just cant wait for these to finally be for sale somewhere.
4:57. what model is that. and where can i find it??!
Thanks for the video explainer! I think I’ll pass on these. I know Contrast are expensive but I’m finding them really useful. Love your Channel.
For all the videos I have watch I enjoy that criticism more in this video. I think at the end of the day it more arrows for our quiver and there will be some stand outs paint and some disappointing ones just like with contrasts paints.
Exactly
Ork is awesome! No one reviewer showed us that speedpaints are mixable, except you, guys!
If someone can't safely assume that these kinds of paints are mixable then they might be in the wrong hobby 🤷♂️
Regarding speedpaints, do you still put the paint on a wet palette or do you use it straight from the bottle?
We put them in tiny det palette cups
Thx for your opinion.Helps always to have more different view angles.
Really enjoying my first work with the.
Great review!
I am waiting for some vallejo paint and I am wondering if mixing the quick paint with the same color in a thicker paint may give you control and a one coat paint all in one....maybe a 50/50 mix of the 2...I will try an see
So what I took from this is clearly the artist makes infinitely more difference to the outcome than slight variation in paints. Paints won't make me Squidmar, cause Squidmar gonna Squidmar.
Spot on, the right techniques combined with practice lead to good results.
Time for a "Best Palette" Video in witch you put together a full palette of different tones, always picking your favorite from the different ranges
Where can I get the file for that Lovecraft monster lucas is painting?
Its from the game Limbo
Have any videos on painting Tyranids? saw this AMAZING scheme but its looks complicated
Do you contrast medium when using it through an airbrush?
No. I think the idea is to use it more like an ink.
Where is the blue and purple mouth demon mini from?
I have tons of minis from various board games that I think these are perfect for. For the rest of my minis these will likely be case-by-case use.
I guess using speed/contrast paint through an airbrush makes sense, but you could just as easily use airbrush specific paints and get the same result, right?
I'm just now learning how to use an airbrush. I've watched your videos on tips and tricks for beginners but I just can't seem to figure it out. The main thing is - how do you make them not look so flat? Like that orc looks so detailed and layered and vibrant and even when I use different shades, my pieces end up looking so flat and dull.
Amazing painting. Totally different from anything I do, but wow! 😍💪
Totally going to start reading Fart Quest with my kids.
Army Painter should be thanksful for this video... Its the first time Ive seen these colors used with an impressive result, great job!
We are!
Dana Howl's airbrush results were nice as well
Great video. Lots of good review here. But where is that Orc from? I need one!
Limbo
So it sounds like the pretty standard Army Painter niche. Like a competing product but mostly lower quality but at a much lower price. There is definitely a market for people looking to save some money though, this hobby isn't exactly budget friendly.
I wonder how your painting styles and skills would translate to more finely detailed minis - like from Infinity for example
I would love to see you guys take a look at Tamiya clear coats. I like to put down a basic metalic coat and then cover it with one of the clear coats. I love the smoke for guns and armor. The colored coats like red, orange, and blue are cool for a novelty look on metal or gems. I have heard they can be used in an air brush but I don't own one so I cannot vouch for that. These paints have been popular for years with people who do model vehicles. I wonder what cool stuff you guys could do with them.
Another thing to look at would be the dipping technique using different polyurethane stains or other products. I would like to see someone with a channel like yours do an episode like that. I've used it with mixed results. Put down a bright base coat on a fairly detailed model. Then dip it, shake it off and remove excess stain with a cotton swab.
anyway, I just discovered and binge watched you channel. I love it and will go back and watch some of these episodes a few times.
