Wow! That "other method" of discharging retorts looks like pure hell for those workers with the long metal rods (note the lack of hard hats and safety glasses!). The first method shown in this film is still pretty much how coke is produced in the U.S.

Most film in the early 20s were silent films, "talkies" didn't come out until around 1927, I still think it could have done with some era piano music as opposed to dead silence, maybe even some phonograph needle scratching
From 1920s to this era nothing much changed in steel making industry, the same old methods are using, the same pollution and emission. It's really frustrating to see how workers are slowly poisoned them selves in working with this environment. No innovation and advancement but constant feeding steel to dead hungry world.

Coal gas can be used to generate electricity today, by running trough cleaning equipment and used in gas turbines.

Great silent video prior to the "talkies". Coke is still made from coal today to make steel. We live in the Age of Steel.
