    Simply the most remarkable camper made in N.A. for anyone who wants to tow a truly lightweight camper. The wide windows and modern look inside distinguish it so much from the typical american-made dark and chocolate brown/beige interiors. We have the smaller version 1743 … and to answer your concerns about the bed, we have added a 2 inch foam mattress around which we set the contour sheet ( fits nicely). We then roll it up towards the back window when we undo the bed to provide more room on rainy days.

      Great idea with the bed in your F1743. Speaking of which, we just released a video tour of the 1743 this morning! Would love to hear your thoughts on that video too! ua-cam.com/video/a8NJ8VXRIuQ/v-deo.html

    I like the device on the tires to maneuver the trailer in tight spaces. I have seen other devices but for bigger RVs or boats. Those are not installed on the trailer.
    This was cool.

    Thanks for this great video. I'm a graphic designer thinking of selling everything and instead switch to RVing full time, which means being able to work on the road is the dealbreaker. I'm in Quebec City (funny, it's close to their main base) and my sister mentioned this manufacturer. I had heard of it but never gave it much thought. You sure had me reconsider it since you both work while travelling with it. So many great insights, thanks a lot for this.

    Thanks for a thorough tour. I've never heard of the Safari line, so I'm going to spend my spare time today browsing some.
    Mom tip: Refrigerator organizers and decanting ingredients into reusable containers would help you stuff more food in there, and store things by type, or even meal prep a little. Baby carrots are just regular carrots shaved down and treated with a chemical cocktail to prevent browning, so it might be worth it to buy bulk carrots, peel and cut into sticks into a reusable container of your choice, and dip in lemon water before storing for a healthier option. When I travel with kids, I pack a cooler essentially full of ingredients for meals, and snacks already cut and arranged in tupperware so we can just assemble meals on the go. Think steak already marinated with roasted veggies ready to reheat. Takes a bit of work, but frees up time throughout the day, and keeps everyone from junky snack foods.

    Thanks for watching (and for taking us to 1K subscribers!). Regarding weight... if you're considering this trailer-especially if this is your first time towing-it weighs 2,368lbs (1,074kg) dry. That means with empty holding tanks (water/sewage) and doesn't account for whatever camping accessories you bring along. It's also worth mentioning, that figure is the base model without add-ons like some seen in this video (e.g. inverter, air conditioner, and microwave).
    It's very important that you don't exceed your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the maximum total safe weight of your vehicle, counting the curb weight (the weight of our vehicle when empty), plus the weight of your passengers, fuel, any accessories added to the vehicle, cargo, and the “tongue weight” of a tow trailer. If in doubt, contact your vehicle's manufacturer or a Sarari Condo dealer with questions.
    Hope you enjoyed the review and let us know if you have any questions.

    The best thing you should add to your setup is a DC-DC charger. This is NOT part of the 8-way trailer connector but a separate unit that will allow you to run your fridge on DC power while driving while charging your battery at the same time. You can purchase a unit that will supply more than enough current and not damage the alternator in your tow vehicle.

    When we went shopping for a lightweight trailer ( Can Am in London Ontario) my wife and I viewed both the 17 series and the 2114 .... no comparison...we fell in LOVE with the 2114 . Come on .....King size bed ...great windows.6 cubic ft fridge..dining table ...AC..furnace and a pee pee room ,,,and very nice awning.. EASY TO TOW...most 6 cylinders or turbo boost 4 cylinders ....what more do you need ❤ We are still in love with our 2114 !! Plus ....added bonus...much like Airstreams...Altos hold their value. Enough said. 😂😂

      I have always loved the 2114, but when we went to CanAm last year they had a used 1743 on the lot, which we bought. No regrets with going to Safari Condo, but my husband now agrees that the 2114 is the better trailer for us. I love the twin to king bed, and the queen bed or quadruple dinette in the front. Do you have issues with getting into the bench on the fridge side the way there is a problem on the 1743?

    That looks like a Hymer Touring with 70% of the flaws worked out. I like the 'Made in Canada' and all the European components. Unfortunately it is unaffordable to most potential buyers. Which doesn't seem to matter looking at the waiting times. As long as there are enough wealthy people the manufacturers can ask whatever they want.

    Great work and video. Two quick questions... what year is your Highlander Hybrid, and can you provide any advice/expxerience or references on converting the standard 4 pin trailer connect plug to the 7 wire plug Altos requires? Thanks and keep it up.. inspirational.. you're adding value to the world!

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  10 місяців тому +1

      Wow, your comments are so kind! You made or day. We drive a 2019 HiHy. If you're going with a wireless brake controller, getting the 4 pin converted to 7-pin is trivial and can be done for about $200 (including parts/labor) at most U-Haul dealerships. If you're getting a wired brake controller, that's takes a little more time/money, but I believe U-Haul can still do that too. Just give them a call and tell them your situation (they've seen it all). They warranty their work too, so it's really a no-brainer!
      Thanks for watching and see you around!

      Yes, the waitlist is tough! I know quality manufacturing is super important to them and they want to make sure that's not compromised when production is a scaled up. Trained and skilled labor doesn't happen overnight.
      I think that's one of the reasons why people are willing to wait so long and travel so far... Safari Condo stands behind their trailers. At least, that was a big selling point for us when we bought our first trailer from them.

    How is this trailer as a 3 season unit. I know you’ve stated that it it’s a bit thin on insulation for extreme temperatures. Are the windows a thermal or dual pane window? We have what’s considered as a 3 season trailer but it just has basic windows which do not do well in shoulder seasons. Thanks for your review!

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому +2

      The windows are single pane, but these trailers have no issue staying warm at all! The are extremely efficient while using the Truma-combi propane heater and can last for weeks in cold temperatures with two tanks. We've camped in temperatures as low as 8F... just set the thermostat like you do at home and you'll stay toasty warm through the night. The heat is more of an issue in the summer when the trailer stays too warm. Owners in hotter climates have reported that the AC really struggles when the outdoor temps are above 90.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

  • @Kharizmah
    @Kharizmah Рік тому +1

    I was waiting to hear if you were able to use AC while off grid

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому +2

      Fortunately, up through now we've been able to get away with not using air conditioning off-grid because we lived in the Pacific Northwest and it really doesn't get that hot there. However, we just started full timing in our new Alto Expedition (ua-cam.com/video/MGCE6UGDHkI/v-deo.html) and we're starting to travel all over the country, including places that definitely require air conditioning.
      We used to travel in the F2114 with an EcoFlow Delta pro, a 3.6 kilowatt hour solar generator with 3,000 w output and 6000 w surge. It was definitely powerful enough to run the trailer's air conditioner, but only for two or three hours (the air conditioner used about 1400 Watts continuous).
      We no longer travel with the Delta pro now that our new Alto has 400 amp hours of LiFePO4 battery built in. However we did just pick up the Honda EU3200i gas generator. We are collecting data to make a future review for that generator, so stay tuned.
      Here's a video we made about the power setup we used to have in the R1723 and F2114: ua-cam.com/video/H4dU18jTA_g/v-deo.html

    A simple fix for nuts, bolts, and screws that work themselves loose is to put a drop of liquid paper or blue lock tight on the threads. This prevents them from loosing, but allows you to loosen them when needed. DO NOT use red lock tight. It’s a nice trailer, but I think a little bit to small for me.

      You've got it right! All of the alto trailers are 3 season. They have plumbing that's exposed under the trailer that's not insulated or heated and is vulnerable to freezing. We try to stay above freezing all year (we're in Southern Florida right now), but we have to do emergency winterizing of the plumbing systems once or twice each year if we can't outrun the cold.

    A better/more efficient refrigerator is a must. I hate the bench seating and table they always put in an RV and would rather it not be there at all. The RV is really designed for 1 person or a couple. The extra bed should never be used. I think you should be eating outside, so a folding table and folding chairs under that awning would be used instead. Now I think the awning should have LED lighting and the ability to screen it in. I would also rather there was not a sink in the bathroom as you have one about 3 feet away.

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  10 місяців тому +1

      Hey Todd. Totally agree with you on the refrigerator. A true compressor refrigerator is essential and anyone who wants to go boondocking should definitely consider a fridge that runs on propane.
      Jessica uses the bench seating all the time, but it's too uncomfortable for me (Justin here).
      Personally, I love the extra bed option if you ever have a friend that wants to come camp with you. I've even used it on nights where I was sick and restless and didn't want to keep waking Jessica up with all of my tossing and turning, so I'm very glad that we have the option to use it. I also love the option that the dinette table top can quickly be attached to the exterior wall of the trailer for dining and we can place our camping chairs on either side. Since it hugs the trailer, it's perfect for rainy days because you can put the awning out.
      Speaking of which, the awning does have an LED lighting strip (sorry if we forgot to mention it in the video).
      These sink in the bathroom is an optional add-on, by default, the trailer does not have it.

    • @toddabbott781
      @toddabbott781 10 місяців тому +1

      @@JustinandJess See I personally would put a longer countertop with maybe storage to one side instead of the benches and table and put a real computer chair to I could have a computer desk. I would also put in a solar system and batteries and switch to all electric appliances instead of propane.
      I would also have a water pump and a 100 foot hose so I could draw in water from a lake or stream and have a water filter and UV filter on it. Then have a 100 foot drain line for gray water that I could use to dump away from the trailer. Many states allow gray water dumping. Just look for a dish detergent and soap that is environmentally friendly. They also make a small washing machine and spin dryer for cleaning clothing. Basically I want something that I could wilderness camp and still have enough amenities to go for months if needed. I would get a StarLink system too.
      Of course this is a dream camper idea and I can not afford it right now and my health is not the best, but recovering slowly. Hopefully if I can get some more weight off my A-Fib will get better or I will get a pace maker and have some energy again.

    If one was not “living” in it but instead taking 5-8 week trips would you prefer the 17 series popup? And did you get better towing MPG when towing the R1723? We use an ALiner now and are thinking about upgrading to the R1713. Thanks

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому +2

      I think the same limitations apply whether you're living in the R1723 full time or 5 to 8 weeks. Even with month-long trips, you're going to need more than a weekend warrior would... Pretty much everything you need to live from laundry detergent for laundromats to a larger wardrobe.
      We've definitely been able to make it work living in the 1723 for months at a time, but the huge difference is that we had to keep a lot of our things in plastic totes in the back of our SUV, like dry foods, paper towels, tool boxes, etc. At times, it could be a pain in the butt to have to go outside in the middle of cooking dinner to grab a potato out of the back of the car. Also, we chose to make the full king size bed (with the center cushions spanning the gap between the couch area) as opposed to sleeping on two twin beds, and this really limited your usable storage because it became an accessible during the night and pretty much required us to unmake the bed everyday.
      All that said, we both think that the R1723 is the coolest looking trailer in the Alto lineup, and Jess just said TODAY that we wish Safari condo could put some kind of overhead cabinet storage in that trailer.
      Long story short... If you don't mind fetching stuff out of your tow vehicle, it's totally doable.
      And yes, we got better gas mileage towing the 1723, however it was within older Highlander hybrid which didn't get as good of gas mileage as our new Highlander hybrid does. This is a total guess, but I'd say our MPG was about 2 to 3 better while towing due to the decreased weight and increased aerodynamics

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video! The most common way to power an air conditioner off-grid is by using a gas generator. The Honda EU2200i is a very popular choice in the RV community because it's extremely quiet and reliable. There's even a $300 conversion kit that allows you to run it off of propane so you don't have to use gasoline.
      Of course, you could theoretically get a solar generator like we have and a TON of solar panels, but that would get very expensive, require excellent solar performance, and require that you never park in the shade.
      We talk a bit about these concepts in this video here... ua-cam.com/video/H4dU18jTA_g/v-deo.html

    The video was very helpful and insightful. Wish I would have come across it sooner. We will be taking ownership of an F-2114 in a few months and it has about the same features and will contain about the same amount of gear as the unit in the video. If it is assumed that all the tanks are near or at full capacity, then the total weight of the camper will be close to 3500 lbs, which is the towing capacity of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid tow vehicle you used. We would also like to use this Highlander model as our tow vehicle but are concerned about being so close to its towing capacity. How did the Highlander perform for you? I assume you went up some steep grades including your fair share of mountain passes?

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! We are so glad you found the video helpful.
      You will definitely not be able to tow with hey Highlander hybrid if the holding tanks are full. I mean, technically you can, but it's really going to struggle, especially on steep mountainous terrain.
      Also remember that the 3500 lb towing capacity includes the weight of any accessories and cargo you are towing. We are minimalist travelers so we are able to get away with having a 3,500 lb TV, but that is definitely not the case with most RVers. Things like floor mats, dog crates, grills, camping chairs, etc can add up pretty quickly.
      Being able to tow with a Highlander hybrid is a huge advantage if you're like us and keep your trailer parked to the campground for days at a time so you can enjoy 30 miles per gallon while driving around the city. But, the trade-off is you will have to be much more diligent about dumping holding tanks for you leave campgrounds, and you have to spend a lot more time getting freshwater only as needed and potentially bringing it back to your trailer using a Jerry can.
      Even being very diligent with weight management, you will still have to drive much slower on the highways and get used to driving way way slower with the semi trucks in the far-right lane when going up steep mountain passes.
      I hope this perspective helps a little bit. Congrats on your new Alto and let us know if you have any other questions.

Does it extend out far enough to be really functional for rain protection and shade? We've been reluctant to get the LED Light Bar because most of the time when we're sitting outside we use our three vintage Coleman lanterns. We LOVE the light they cast and that gentle hissing sound too! But, I can see where the LED Light Bar could be beneficial for those times when we want light out there but aren't using the Coleman lanterns. Does the Awning have to be deployed to use the LED lights, or are they fully functional when the Awning is rolled up and not deployed?@@JustinandJess

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому

      Yes, you will need either a wired brake controller installed in the Highlander for a wireless brake controller installed on the trailer. If you go with the if you go with the latter option (my preference) you will need to have a seven pin flat outlet installed on the back of your Highlander. Safari condo or one of their dealers can tell you exactly what you'll need to have done. Most U-Haul locations will do that wiring for you. If I remember correctly it cost less than $200 including labor and materials. Hope that helps!

      To be honest, I don't know much about them, but generally speaking I would steer clear of anything that uses wood in the construction. Managing moisture and humidity in a trailer is hard enough as it is. I'd hate to have to worry about wood rot as well. I guess if you plan on exclusively traveling in dry and arid climates, this wouldn't be as big of a consideration.

      @JustinandJess  Рік тому +1

      We tow with a 2019 Highlander hybrid. It's towing capacity is 3,500 lbs.
      At 6'1" the trailer should be tall enough for you. You may need to crouch just a little bit when showering though, but if you are anything like us, you'll be taking short navy showers so I don't know if that would disqualify this trailer for you.
      I keep a thick foam pad in the back of the car that I can kneel on for vehicle maintenance low of the ground (e.g. changing a tire). We started using that to stand on while showering since it has a pretty small footprint and is about 2 in thick. We just keep it outside after showering and it dries overnight.
      I think it was around $5 at harbor freight www.harborfreight.com/foam-kneeling-pad-56572.html
      I keep the water pressure pretty low to conserve water so most of it just trickles down slowly and there's no risk of mud splashing.

    • @JustinandJess
      @JustinandJess  Рік тому

      Yes, but your feet will likely hang off of the bed by a couple inches. If you don't mind sleeping perpendicular to the length of the trailer, there's actually a little more room from wall to wall (6.75 ft). The obvious drawback to that is, if you sleep with a partner, one of you will have to climb over the other one if they get up in the middle of the night.
      It's also worth noting, this trailer will barely accommodate you at 6'4". Without wearing any shoes, Sandals, or flip-flops, your head will come within a fraction of an inch of the ceiling. Also, the bathroom is a little bit shorter than the rest of the trailer (6'1") because of the raised shower pan.

      Technically we do this. We connect our trailer to our tow vehicle with the seven pin connector that has a 12 volt auxiliary line. It doesn't provide a lot of power, but enough to power the trailers electric brakes and trickle charge the battery.
