Sheep Scanning. Numbers are down but why?

This video is about pregnancy scanning sheep with a little bit about the reasons why we scan and what are the benefits behind it. The scanner Padraig, is in chatty form so we get an insight into the problems he sometimes faces and he details the the pros and cons of his system.
It does not all go to plan....

That’s a good scan, neighbour with gray face ewes over here had 245%,, Absolute nightmare. Great vid as always 👍

Not been huge scanning % over here in the UK either, hopefully less lambs= higher price /hd

Do you feel like the breed of sheep makes a difference when it comes to forage vs birth weights or lambing difficulties?

Breed certainly has a bearing on lambing difficulties but body condition and especially diet in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy has a significant influence.

Is that a specific SW package?
I used TGM with the AWR300 reader. Find it pretty good.

Hi JP. I use the APR600, hasn't a great reach but find it easy to put plenty of data in especially at lambing. Will make a video on the software package I'm using around lambing time...

It's s report from Sheep Ireland App. It's limited how much information available from Sheep Ireland. I'm currently trying out 2 other software packages for performance recording. Will make a video on it soon.... reader is an APR600.

Do you cull empty hoggets or give them another chance?

I always give them another chance. Found it very unusual that a young sheep will not produce a lamb at some stage. Also noticed empties in the young sheep becoming more of a problem every year so I vaccinated all hoggets and ewe lambs for Toxo and Enzo this year..

How long did you fast the ewes for scanning and what is the app you’re using at the end? Im enjoying your videos Thanks

The ewes were fasting for 2 hours or so. The ones we couldn't find didn't fast at all. It made things a little slower. Will run through the software I'm using in the near future, video in the pipeline..

Hi, what is the EID reader you use?
What would you consider to be the pro's and cons of it, in terms of keeping records?

Hi Maurice. I was using paper for all record keeping but I found this becomes less useful and time consuming as the amount of data increases. The EID reader can transfer all data to the computer by simply plugging it in. The data is much easier to make use of when on the computer.
