Though this is a summery- it will be long: James and Lydia are Billionaires and have the English tabloids all over them. Lydia had been rebelling ever since she was 14 and looking for love in all the wrong places. A reporter took advantage of her and publicized family secrets when she was 15 (!). I don‘t like her storyline either, but I think it‘s there to show why her father doesn‘t want her to lead the campaign. James on the other hand was groomed to be obedient (by occasional abuse and threats) from a young age. He‘s meant to take over the company and puts on the show that his father trained him to portray. His outer attitude is a result of people trying to get at their money and power in some way or another. Ruby is the first girl who portrays some hope at another way of living and is not interested in his wealth. Something that he never witnessed or had the courage to dream of. So he doesn’t really change, just evolves into someone more hopeful instead of dreading a life he has no control over which he hates and constantly numbs, hence the sex, drugs and pop music (:)). Ruby’s drive and optimistic view of the world is what he’s first attracted to. He admires how hard she fights for what she wants and her strong moral convictions. His father sees a threat in that, because he doesn’t have control over James anymore. Which is why he acts the way he does. So sorry for the long post- keep on doing what you guys love! 🎉

Yeah I have no idea why they are pushing this teacher/student relationship it’s gross. All the longing glances and sweet words between them won’t move me. I was super surprised that Ruby as the moral compass of the show didn’t report it for the safety of Lydia. While I respect her for staying out of it and that action is shown as being honourable I am surprised that she didn’t report it.
Remember the power, class, and money issues between Ruby and the Beauforts. She knows if she says anything, the family will crush her to "save" their daughter by pretending that it isn't true or worse, that Ruby had the inappropriate relationship and blamed their daughter. Either way, the school is way more likely to side with the benefactors who fund the school than some poor nobody scholarship kid. Their easy way out is to blame her for lying so they can avoid a scandal and revoke her scholarship for moral reasons, which wrecks her whole life - academic, personal, and professional. All these rich, powerful families know each other and they will totally blackball her family and her personally, once given the slightest excuse. If she's associated with a scandal like a teacher-student sexual relationship involving one of the richest and most powerful families in the country and one of "the" schools...yeah, no more Oxford or any other colleges being willing to give her entrance with that hanging around her neck. Even worse if she needs scholarship money to pay for school (these families are often the ones who fund those schools and their scholarships, which often come with "morals" clauses or other types of judgy strings). It's so much bigger than it might be under normal circumstances with regular kids in a regular school. Besides, bringing this to the public eye, or law enforcement, when all she has is eyewitness testimony but no hard evidence that both completely exonerates her while definitely implicating the guilty ones...you see what I mean? I hate it, too. But history shows us what happens to all parties, even innocent witnesses, in these kinds of messy, front-page, high-profile cases. Maybe Sutton would get stopped, but both the girls would likely be badly hurt if not completely wrecked in the process. A lot of collateral damage is done in these situations even if they go the distance. More often than not, sadly, they get stopped and swept under rugs at some point after savaging the victims and witnesses involved. In her old public school, with no money involved for either her or the school, no likelihood of paparazzi or social class warfare, or if she had that hard evidence...I bet Ruby would have spoken up about it and been taken much more seriously than in these circumstances. This is part of the curse of big money and power. Reality sucks sometimes.

As a writer I find it fascinating how certain things can affect a story for men and women differently because of just male and female culture and different perspective. One thing I was curious about is how do you guys feel about Ruby being the hero for James and rescuing him? Like I know he literally rescues her from the pool. But Ruby wakes James up. Call him on his crap and makes him think for himself and think about what he really wants for himself. She’s the only one who is curious about what he wants. And the one thing that he shows love for (Lacrosse) she lobbies for him to get back on the team even after everything he did to her. She sees the good in him and gives him credit for how he changes. The book this show is based off of is called “save me” I thought it was a weird title until I realized that James is the damsel in distress. And I love that twist. What are your thoughts?

Even if the guy was 21 it’s not ok. That’s a huge difference in age for someone so young. I know it happens. But what makes this relationship unacceptable is that he’s her teacher. He knows better. And as soon as he learned thar she wasn’t older than 18 he should have ended it. And it never should have become a physical relationship. As soon as he learned she wasn’t an adult he should have ended contact. I don’t care if it’s love. You’re the adult. You need to act like one and not take advantage. If it’s real love come find her when she’s 25 and her brain is fully developed. If she still likes you then take a chance. Otherwise you are a creepshow.
