      Will they be tears of pain or relief.

    I’ve grown up and lived in atlanta my whole life. I’ve shaped my career path around his values. I wanted to meet him and tell him just how much his defiance and strength meant to me and defining my own purpose. He means so much to so many of us. This tribute you all made was very reflective of that affinity we all had for that man. He taught us things that we still don’t fully understand. But they are gifts. And your words are gifts. laalaa99stl Beautiful. As I read your words I reach 4:38 in the video and hear the words "hate is too heavy a burden to bear" quoted from Martin Luther King by Lewis as he describes forgiving a man who beat him many years previously. He proves his point that "love is a better way" with just the softness of his tone within the firm timbre of a voice that resonates with a depth of sincerity and compassion.
      Love from Scotland to wherever you are, to whoever you are who reads this and heed laalaa99stl's fine words.

    No one teaches love anymore. John Robert Lewis was what an atheist would see as an angel. He was the most decent human one could aspire to be.
    No matter the evil that came at him, HE WAS LOVE.💗

    • @NotEnoughBooks
      @NotEnoughBooks 4 роки тому +7

      The most Human, what goodness IS. He met his capacity for good and he brought forth goodness in others. Other people believe in him because he was as brave, intelligent, kind , emotionally steadfast, and righteous as he was. The atheist ideal of why it’s putting our faith in people, the reality, and how humbling it is to see it in a man.

    The death of John Lewis hit me harder than I thought it would. Maybe because he left at this particular time, when race relations have flared up, there is a klan member in the wh, there is a pandemic and so on. I wish he could have seen it all get better first. He fought for equal rights and just basic human rights for every person his whole life. He absolutely saw an amazing progress, but I don't want him to have been worried when he died. I am worried. But the giant he was, maybe he saw something I don't, maybe he was at peace and trusting in the power of the good people. I'm struggling with that conviction right now.

    Oh my goodness, such a lovely memory. I wish I knew more about the man. He is nothing more than a gift to our nation from God. Amazing Grace is his song. Jon Batiste, it was amazing to listen to you talk to him for these few minutes. I will have to see what else he had to say to you. I want more to know. Good trouble, is what he called it?

    I think the reason so many of us feel such emotion is it took this man dying to remind us, amidst all these dark, evil characters that mark our current time, that there were always good people still around. People who stood for good things and lived their noble fights. Those people never went away, but they too were enveloped by the darkness. Their power was diminished and everything they stood for was threatened. And now, unfortunately, they're dying before getting a chance to see real redemption.
    At the very moment John Lewis died, secret police were stalking American streets, defending the ego of a tyrant against a society seeking basic recognition of civil rights. That should tell us two things: 1) we should know that, in welcoming the darkness, whether actively or apathetically, we failed these people and we failed that which is good about ourselves; and 2) come the next opportunity, we should make damn fucking sure we don't fail them again.

Seeing Stephen and Jon thinking back on their memories of John Lewis and working through their reactions to his legacy in the moment is truly touching and inspiring. They are both evidently deep thinkers and they express themselves so eruditely through words and music that this conversation feels genuinely spiritual and uplifting. Thank you.
