Gear oils, their viscosity and composition have created some myths this topic arises because unlike motorcycles scooters have a independent lubrication system for their transmission. Primary CVT transmission in scooters like Honda Honda Activa, Dio, TVS Jupiter, Ntorq are dry type but the transmission gears (reduction type also includes bearings) towards the wheels need lubrication. In this video do a gear oil change on scooter and we have tested both engine oil as transmission fluid in place of gear oil and dedicated gear oil for scooters.

Nice to know about the dedicated gear oils. I've mostly heard of the engine oil itself doing a better job as the gear oil as well. And mostly it is the 10w40 which performs best in CVT gearbox scooters. Thanks again for the wonderful content 👍

Just done 1st service for my Jupiter 125 today, made sure to change the engine oil in my presence.
For gear oil the service guy told they already did it.

In my Hero duet user manual, it is written to replace gear oil with 100ml of 10w 30 engine oil. Using separate gear oil is not mentioned by most OEMs

Have you tried using the Motul Gear 300 75W90 on your scooter? I am curious as this gear is used on differentials and transmission gearboxes of a vehicle. Scooters used gears as well but the only difference is mostly are 80w90 and labeling always says Scooter Gear Oil.

Even suzuki access 125cc 2018 and later models use 10w30 engine oil as gear oil. It's mentioned in service manual as well.

Does gear oil evaporate in a 1500 watt motor's gearbox? The company I bought from, Edrift scooters, does not give customer service, but I think I remember once getting someone on the line when I first bought it and he said regular 10W-30 oil in the gearbox to refill it and he said it would last a long time before needing refill. Bro can you use Amsoil CVT fluid in TVS wego and honda activa and let us know the difference/experience. Also when we also call scooters a gearless scooter then why are we putting a gear oil like castrol 80w90 gl 5 in CVT transmission scooters.. for that i think Amsoil CVT transmission fluid or some other CVT transmission fluid will be the best choice.
I did put Engine Oil in my Hero Maestro's gearbox and everything was fine for 10k kms. But then I decided to use dedicated Gear Oil and bought Servo Gear Oil SAE90 EP. It was really impossible to find any difference between the two. Only thing I noticed was that the sound coming from Gearbox was a bit lesser.
Also I read somewhere that vehicles that don't require EP(Extreme Pressure) gear oils if supplied with same can ruin the rubber seals. But to be completely honest I have been using the EP gear oils for past 15k and it's doing fine.

A month ago I changed Oils in my Activa 5g.. Without my notice the mechanic put the 20W 40 in Engine and Gear box. Scooter had not a single issue till this change. I ride in traffic so it resulted in activa giving vibration while transmission. I changed the gear oil with this Castrol Gear Oil, Transmission is smoother in traffic so the scooter is running smoothly and silent.

The problem is ,even the manufacturer has no idea about which lubricant type to use .But I have seen that the gear oil that comes with the bike is more thicker and different color though Yamaha mentioned and sell gear oil recommend for their bikes and they are easy to find in conventional oil store.

Better use gear oil than engine oil. Final reduction gearbox have heavy job than engine, must be lubricated with gear oil that contain extreme presure additives.

10W-30 works fine and the same is used by many manufacturers. The gearbox used is a basic reduction type gear box that transfers power from the CVT. Regarding change interval, I personally prefer doing it around every alternate oil change which is around 5000-6000km.

Try to use metal treatment oil mixed with fully synthetic engine oil like 5w-40 or 10w-40... If transmission is for 120ml (90ml full sythetic engine oil 5w-40 + 30ml metal treatment oil) that will be awesome... Im doing that for 2yrs now on my scooter Honda click i change gear oil for every 1yr..and believe me u will enjoy ur scoot even more .. every morning first run no need to heat up ur scoot coz it is start and go

I got my first service done of my jupiter zx intelligo last week after filling engine oil that is the jupiter tru4 skutta oil about 150 ml was left so he used that same in the gear box when i asked him why arent u using the designated gear oil he said no it doesn’t make a difference its the same thing..

@@ravitejathestranger5587 been using Motul 7100 10w40 for 5k km, no issue faced, but I changed as a precaution. I don't use Castrol gear oil as I have leftover unused engine oil in the 1L bottle. if you have no spare engine oil left do use Castrol gear oil 80w90, you won't regret it surely.

10w30 JASO MB is for scooter... 20w50 would be much thick.. you must be feeling that difference when you ride. For next time chose oil specially made for scooter like the above mentioned grade..

The GL5 Castrol gear oil certainly made my scooters gear box quieter, compared to engine oil the gear box was running on earlier from the service center. Also i have noticed a lot more metal sludge from gearboxes that use engine oil in the gearbox rather than gear oil, specially of not changed at the right time. Gear oil seems to hold better, compared to engine oil.

Gl4 or gl5?
In gearless scooter, the gears are always meshed in driving mode, no gear selection, shifting to hi-low gears takes place and moreover the maximum speed the vehicle runs is comparatively less, hence the metal debris produced will be very minimal. This could be one reason why manufacturer recommend to use engine oil. You can very well use gearoil as the name itself is selfexplanatory 😊😊.

Rear brakes are generally kept lighter in bite and progressive side when compared to the front ones. Still you can get it inspected and if required then bleeded from the authorized service.
I have suzuki access 125 bs4 2019 model. In service manual its written to use same engine oil as gear oil. And i change gear oil every time i change engine oil, reason - access 125 needs only 650 ml of engine oil and gearbox needs 50ml(written in manual). Engine oil can is of 800 ml....i never overfill oil....so first thing i tell my mechanice to do is drain old gearbox oil totally and fill fresh...balance whatever is left in can i use as engine oil....upto appx 700ml....

The oil should be changed during first service. For mineral oils I would suggest 3000km drain interval for heavy use.

Most of the mechanic say buy 1 liter engine oil put oil for 850 ml then balance oil will put on gear box it is good engine or bad

I am unable to procure Castrol gear oil in my city. All petrol pump and local autoparts dealer say that the product has been discontinued.
No the product hasn't been discontinued it is hard to find get gear oil from authorized dealers or parts shop or use engine oil and change every 2000 km or 6 to 12 months
I got a gear oil from local shop at 40rp 125ml. It was unbranded and colour was look like diesel, blueish green and was thicker then my motul scooter engine oil

But when we use such thick grade oil for transmission performance is reduced. I tried using this grade for transmission in my scooter but performance reduced. After I switched back to 10w40 synthetic engine oil the performance is good now.

As mentioned in the video the viscosity and even density remains very similar for a SAE 80W-90 grade oil and a SAE 10W-40 grade engine oil (due to different grade systems). Yes, the additives used are different 😊

There should be no harm in using this oil. Heavier oils in gear box is fine.

The thing is gear oil protects better cuz the additives but on the other side we ask if the additives eats the cooper components(does our scooter have those metals inside ? )

Go to nearest service centre at ask them for clutch shoe cleaning. The clutch box has got some dust due to which it is making noise.

What will be your plan if you sell the Jupiter? Agar apko fir se scooter hi leni hai then I would suggest go for engine rebuild. Do it from an authorized service or from an expert mechanic and things should be back to normal.

The noise from the V belt (drive belt) rotation cannot be reduced by gear/engine oil.

How to know scooter condition
No problem occurs if oil was from the factory. But change 80w90 at 4000 to 5000 km or 2 years or if you use engine oil then change it every 2000 km or 6 months.
