For years, every time I go to my favorite Filipino turn-turo (point point) I often see South & Central American regular diners. Seems to me that for them, Filipino food has been their best kept secret and no one includes them in their surveys or interviews.

I love Filipinos everything about them!! I just started eating there food starting December of last year and I love it because my two friend girls in the Philippines and my one Filipina friend here in the US always introduce me to many Filipino dishes!! I love Lecthon, pancit canton, sinigang, pusit, misua, palabok, halo halo, adobo rice, turtang tulong and lugaw!! Maybe I'm missing some but I'm still trying more dishes from Filipinos and I really love the accent because I'm practicing Tagalog myself and planning to have a Filipina wife!!🥰🥰 Did I mention I love Jollibee, Max's Restaurant and Gerry's Grill?? YUMMY!!!!😍😍Filipino Food is definitely underrated and it's sad because I didn't know anything about it until I met two girls my friends from the Philippines!!😔 And I agree with you Andrew!!

I love this discussion because you guys are aware of the 2 sides of FIlipino spectrum in terms of opinions. There are Filipinos who only value home cooked therefore they do not trust the high end restaurant in terms of quality-to-dollar ratio and there are FIlipinos who love these Filipino restaurants because they are proud of their food culture being opened for the world to experience.

LOL the "pek pek juice" comment was crazy -- someone was getting it in. 😂
Anyway, I ate Jollibee and Max in the Philippines and had no idea that they're all over the US. But I'd prefer them back in the homeland. Everything seems to taste better overseas.

While I love that Filipino cuisine is reaching the American food market, I often feel that Filipino food in America is only scratching the surface and not fully representing the diversity of flavours Filipino cuisine has.
I'm from Manila, but I've been exploring flavours of Southern Philippine regions. I recently tried Cansi and Tiula Itum, and it made me realize that there is more to Filipino food than what is represented in the mainstream food world. If Filipino-American chefs bring those types of regional foods to the American food market, it'll open so many eyes and tastebuds.

i got introduced to Filipino food in the late 80's and early 90's all thanks to the US Navy. i was stationed most of my career in California and allot of the barracks house keepers were Tita's from the Philippines. When they gathered for lunch they always had a ton of food and sometimes they would hook some of us new guys up with some fresh made food and omg, it was to die for. also had allot of friends who had wifes from the Philippines and i use to get hooked up big time with them for food lol. we never went away hungry.

The fine dining side of ethnic foods is challenging to accept due to price. Remember, most Filipinos come from modest means from large families along with extended families. With that said, food in general is made for the masses shared at the dinner table to fill your belly. And a lot of times to give away to take home with you. The fancy restaurants give you too little food.

I believe from my experience in growing up in Toronto as a Filipino Canadian, Filipinos tend to promote the Filipino Cuisine to Filipinos. Great examples are a lot Filipino UA-camrs who teaches Filipino Cuisine teaches in Tagalog instead of iEnglish.and some of these UA-camrs even lives in the U.S. A Moroccan co-worker of mine who loves Filipino Cuisine told me one time it’s difficult to find a UA-cam Channel that teaches authentic Filipino Cuisine in English. My co-worker then asked me , if Filipinos are proud of their culture and cuisine, shouldn’t they promote it in English since a majority of Filipinos are great in English? I totally I agree with my co-worker. But this now changing as more Fil-Am and Fil-Can who have a multicultural mindset are taking over their parents restaurants , opening Filipino Food Places and becoming Foodie UA-camrs. I believe to put Filipino Cuisine in the map requires a Multi-Cultural Mindset by Filipinos

Andrew makes a good point at 11:45.
Filipino food is never meant to be eaten in a fine dining environment. In the Philippines, Filipino food is considered to be food to be eaten at home on a regular basis.
When people think of fine dining or high end cuisine in the Philippines, it is usually American food, Italian food or insert other European food. This can be seen in UA-cam videos of the “wealthy”, white collar” variety of Filipino UA-camrs in the Philippines. They usually eat pasta or carbonara instead of pork adobo or dinuguan. The common denominator is if it’s foreign Western European/american, then it’s fancy.
One good example is the fine dining restaurant Antonio’s in the Philippines.

I have lived in San Francisco for 4 years from 2012 to 2016 and found one spot that serve Filipino food which is Kusina ni Tess. I came across a food trunk that is called Senor Sisig which just serves Sisig. To me, it was ok.
However, I found myself just cooking Filipino food in the dorm because it reminded me of home instead of seeking other places that serve it.
The way to find other Filipino places is honestly through other Filipinos. They are usually catering services or holes in the wall based out of my experience. For parties, I bring the "safe" Filipino food which is lumpia. If I bring Dinuguan, I guarante no one would want to try it. 🤣

There has been a ton of restaurants which have tried to “modernize” Filipino cuisine … There was Cendrillon back in NYC in the 90’s- 2000’s all the way to Abaca in SF and Kasama in Chicago these days…While they have been quite popular to non Filipinos and some demographic of Filipinos, the major hurdle of these restaurants is that the common Filipino isn’t really into a modern take of the food. There’s nothing wrong with that but it seems that these types of interpretations of Filipino food seems to feel like a hard sell to Filipinos. Filipinos are used to a family style setting when it comes to our food.
My take on these restaurants is that they are introducing the flavors of my people using different techniques and presenting them to a whole new demographic.
I do have my share of Filipino food but I’m also in that group that couldn’t eat it everyday nor every week even though i grew up eating it.

Real Filipino food is home-cooked. When I grew up, there weren't any restaurants . Women cooked all night and made tables full of food for weddings, birthdays ,etc. These days, there is a new generation opening up restaurants here in S.F. stay away if you're afraid, but you'd be missing out on tasty food. There is a new Filipino Cultural District in SF . Check it out.

The # of Jolibees is a bad metric to gauge interest in Filipino cuisine because the menu is closer to American fast food which has mainstream appeal. It's like using KFC restaurants to gauge interest in Filipino food, can't really extrapolate because everyone loves fried chicken.

Sure it's fine to have twist or fusion or re-imagining of the dish. But bring it back to basics, all the poppin places had to learn and taste the original food

Culture culture and open minded is key. Just cause you are intimidated by eating in fine dining therefore you think your grandma home cooking is better on one particular dish. So you talking smack about the price and culture of the others.
Good topic all, I am from Chicago and still very lil good Filipino restaurant I have always count on my Flip friends to dictate where we go to eat and or throwing a cook out at their back yard. Either way I am game and up for good multi cultural experiences. Just grateful when I don’t have to cook or care to run a restaurant. 😊
