Why don't anyone say anything about them? Personally I think the I phone is the most over priced, over rated piece of rubbish ever! I mean come on its not even hd! And that silly home button is so last decade! Rather that put something useful on the iPhone 5s like a larger proper hd screen(not that retina crap) they put gimmicky finger print recognition! Sony rules!
One thing about tech reviewers in the US is that they are so biased to apple (apart from a few) that they are totally blinded from the true reality and the state of the world.

Usually other reviews just reiterate the specs that you could just look up online yourself... You've always got the best reviews, and it also helps that you're one of the few reviewers with small hands like me. Anyway, thank you for the review! I was debating on whether to get this (in pink lol) or the Xperia Z3 Compact. I would have loved to see a longer review on this or a review on the Z3 Compact, but based on this, I think I'll go with the Z3 Compact, though it's a shame I can't get it in pink. Thanks again. :)

can you set the aperture in manual mode? soft corners are typical of any digital camera is the aperture is set high (f2-f4). for landscapes, f8-f11 is typical, for sharper corners

I had the compact for a few days. It was nice, especially the peace of mind of a waterproof phone. However, it was that bit too heavy for what I was after and fractionally too wide. I preferred the size/weight of the HTC one mini and the iPhone 5s. Audio was decent, especially the external speaker (could be a bit louder on earphones), and the camera was good compared to some. A premium feel, though a bit of a dust magnet, it seemed ideal for those who wanted to go from an iPhone 4s to android.
Erica are you going to be getting your hands on the LG G Flex? I've heard mixed reactions about its display and I would love to hear your opinions on it.

Coming from an iPhone, I do notice the annoying darkness/gamma of the screen. As Erica said, it does make shooting of photos very difficult when you do not have the correct calibration.
why would you never buy the pogo pin charger?, well its more of a question why you sounded not exactly positive about it, I wish all phones had these or similar (well on the bottom not side) so that the phones micro USB seal doesn't become warn out over time, I too am disappointed that wireless charging isn't there, but as right now with the phone I'm using I'm charging it at the same time, I can't do with with wireless thanks for the preview

Would it be possible to give Stamina mode a spin and share the result either in the full review or on Twitter? Had a good experience with it when trying the Xperia ZL a while back.
Thanks for the great reviews which was easy for someone who's not a technology genius to understand. I have been using the phone for 2 days now and honestly, it's a great phone for what it is. It is meant to be very portable in the hands while you walk around town and text your friends at the same time. The great G lens camera will provide you the great shots with friends and family anytime anywhere. It's definitely not a device for long periods of reading or playing games. Its simply not designed for that purpose. If you prefers gaming and reading mostly on the phone, the z1 will be your choice.

Great review, Erica! And I totally agree with you on the issues about z1 compact's display. The gamma really is way too high which totally screwed up the shadow details like you said. Trying to watch a movie or any video with lots of dark scenes on this phone is a total nightmare! Also compared to my calibrated LCD monitor (also IPS panel), the color accuracy on this phone is also way off the mark (too bluish), and the color temperature does seem a little bit high as well. For someone who values color accuracy over everything else in a display this is a deal breaker for me. It's really a shame because other than the poor color reproduction and gamma, this is truly a great mini phone. It's sad to think that even with an IPS panel Sony still couldn't get their phone's screens look right. What's up with that sony?
Before i was just watching this video, eagerly wanting z1 compact AND now, im writing this post using it. So far REALLY AWESOME PHONE! Kinda culture shock about the speed (been using xperia neo V which kinda super slow and lags a lot). Never tried the special feature, applying waterproof but as far as I have used it, TOTALLY AWESOME! 8/10 in my opinion. =)
There probably were some problems with bending, but that certainly didn't happen by itself. The person who blamed it on Sony was probably sitting on his phone. Don't belive everything you read on the internet. A few years ago I saw the very same accusations posted for some iPhones.
Anyone know if all the screen calibration issues go away if you root it? I'm really picky when it comes to white balance and retarded contrast 'enhancements'.

Hey Erica. Nice video as usual! Has the XZ1 compact also different panels built in? Hey The Xperia Z back in 2013 had the same kind of calibration in panels coming from jdc. Hated it viewing dark pictures --- all black. It just tried to be oled. Then Sharp also supplied the XZ and the XZ1 with panels. Those had washed out colors much poorer viewing angles then JDC-Dsiplays but at lesat they had a wider color range. Keep up the great work!

The gamma of the Xperia is better and has better views because it has IPS-LCD. Not much difference, so you'll find the screen great. The Xperia has a way to edit white balance, and I said this because the iPhone has a slight yellow tint on the screen. Not too major, though, so the decision is yours.
i had pink version too but that waterproof did not work (5min in 10cm and thats it) and sony give me a new white version because they havnt any pink versions anymore and i dont like that white version at all. I want my pinkie back :(
the sensor size on this is just massive for a smartphone cam. this in combination with the fast f/2.0 lens pretty much means flash is a redudant luxury.

This is the phone I'm waiting for. Size is ideal for using one hand and carry in my jean pocket. Resolution of display is OK for 4,3" display because battery technology is not good for fuul HD displays. So I think battery life is great. I will but this phone next week please feed back some experiences before I buy it :-)

It is a delightful diminutive phone. There are quirks but it is ultimately loveable. For me it is a keeper. Looking forward to the full review

is there a way to disable the bottom bar while browsing or using gps? it takes up a quite a bit of the screen space

I'd say that the iPhone is slightly better color wise. The screen quality altogether on the iPhone is very good and still holds up.

It's just like the compact but bigger. In this video I show you the viewing angles of the Z1s...they are nowhere near as good as the Compact.
