idk why would anyone be bitching about the viewing angle, you want 20 people to simultaneously watch a movie on this phone??? when i'm using it i hold it facing myself so why should it have perfect view from every angle??
8:45 viewing angles? sony probably designed it that way as a privacy thing so that people wont see what youre doing on your phone and who looks at their phone from the sides??
From my “perspective” the view angle as you show it ( going pitch black while tipping it back) is a big big +, I don't want everyone that`s in my near vicinity to read all of my e-mails while taking the subway :D just a thought for anyone that has sensitive information on their phones

Some 5.0 inch users say that z1 compact is so small. FOR GOD'S SAKE HAVEN'T U SEEN IPHONE?

It looks like Sony did something a group of users are looking for: A very capable phone, basic to some extent, easy holding, and IP67 rated. These type of users (like myself) don't user our phones heavily, but when we use it, it needs to be capable - but the main selling point for us us the IP67 rating.

Well, no. They cater to a different set of customers. Those who want more dustproofing go for IP 6X. And those who want waterproofing go for IP X8. So they cater to those who want waterproofing, although it is to a degree dust resistant (IP 5X)

Well sony phones ARE to a degree dust resistant. You have to remember that the Xperia Z and the Smartwatch 2 are rated for IP57 which is IP5X for dust and IPX7 for water. I haven't seen a single unit with dust behind the screen. IP5X resistance is no joke even if it isn't as good as the IP6X.
IP5X is rated for limited ingress and has been tested for dust protection in a dust chamber with none or low pressure. Which means it's pretty protective.
IP6X is the same thing except it can withstand some pressure so unless you are really outoorsy you don't need it. And by really outdoorsy i mean REALLY outdoorsy.
On the other hand, the difference between IPX7 and IPX8 is that IPX7 is rated for temporary immersion and IPX8 is rated for continuous immersion. Which is immersion 1M deep for 30 minutes in IPX7. You can potentially take both in IPX7 and an IPX8 phone swimming as long as you wipe the phone clean and wash it free of all chlorine and chemicals as the chemicals can have an adverse effect on the sealing and adhesives used. Also only immerse in freshwater or swimming pool water as saltwater and saline water add pressure and salt can completely scratch up even the best gorilla glass/dragontrail display. That being said, IPX8 is rated for 1.5m deep in the same situations so it's a better swimming companion.
The reason for making a phone water resistant is to make sure that accidental splashes don't damage your phone.
The reason for making it dust resistant is to prevent any dust from entering the phone and sitting between the screen and the digitizer and ruining the experience.
The reason for making it waterproof is to allow you to swim with it to a point.
The reason to make it dust proof is to allow it to withstand the great outdoors to the fullest.
Before i was just watching this video, eagerly wanting z1 compact AND now, im writing this post using it.
So far REALLY AWESOME PHONE! Kinda culture shock about the speed (been using xperia neo V which kinda super slow and lags a lot). Never tried the special feature, applying waterproof but as far as I have used it, TOTALLY AWESOME! 8/10 in my opinion. =)
BTW, when i got this phone, i was really cramming to death looking for that background defocus app, got it and it was really really cool! Thanks for this Droid Life
November 2018 and still have this, still love it, it still works very well and still has one of the best cameras ever fitted on a phone (in manual mode), great product only issue is what would I replace it with? simple, same again but a factory refurb.
Perfect small phone in the moment
Ever seen a 4.3 inch phone with 1080p display?? The 720p display on the Compact is more of highlight than a disappointment. Not to mention it is an IPS LCD panel, putting it slightly on par with the TFT 1080p display on the Z1 which I currently own.
Im taking pictures in my toilet all day long!! ;-) xDxD
Ok, this was actually the first review I seen that actually complained of the wieving angels? All the others actually says the screen dont have this problem (wich I dont even think its a problem). To be honest, its actually the came that is the problem here, if you look at the screeen outside camera you would notice it aint at all bad weiving angels.
Marko Milicevic Hi, i am thinking of buying z1c very soon and i need ur advise what do u think about it and should i get the z1 rather than the z1c since there is no big price difference? i used to hold 4.6" inch xperia sp and it was perfect in size, but when i tryed my firend's z i found it to be large, so what do u think

Thanks buddy. I am holding my z1c in my handa right now, it is an awesome phone the only thing that i dont like about it is the low speakers
Oh and another thing, it get scratch really easy i would suggest putting screen protector at both sides
This snow storm here in Portland has been crazy.
Nothing wrong with the viewing angles, the reason why it seemed as if it was black when you titled it is cause of the reflective screen and glass, so under extreme lighting conditions you wont see it so clearly cause it's reflective, has nothing to do with the display but the materials used. It has been reviewed by several other top sites and every single one praises the viewing angles.
1:29 obviously, everything below 4.5 is so 2012 and outdated. love how you indirectly tell the audience that iphone is so uncool.
Fingerprint or smudge on the screen? Just wash it. That's what I did many times on this phone
This and almost any sony phones attract so many dirt and fingerprints because they put a screen protector that attracts all of the dirt, and it scratches really easy aswell.
3:51 Mee too man.I have like the biggest (in the sense of long) hands you can imagine and still got problems with other phones.When i handled Z1 compact it was just perfect.Any bit larger and i wouldn't touch corner to corner without moving the phone.
Hi! I have been using the Sony Z1 Compact for a few months now and I think it's a phenomenal device! I have to disagree one aspect of your review which was on the viewing angle. I literally tried tilting my Compact to see if I am getting the same bad viewing angle on the screen as yours shown, but it was pretty clear to me. I do agree with you though that people have to give this phone a try.
My only qualm about the Compact is the shatter proof plastic laminate they put on both sides of the glass. But there are ways to take it out. Check out tips here on UA-cam.
Viewing angles is a point of view thing. I appreciate to have some privacy with someone sitting next to me- been using sony for some time and never had a thought about that. Also I can´t quite see the issues with the display. I personally can´t see much difference to an iPhone 5s, if any. It´s more like a different style, like it is with televisions- (and the Sony OLED Telly Displays are breathtaking btw) if you look at phillips or sony or LG... they all deliver fantastic pictures in the premium section, but all look different.
nice review. you said the back is made from plastic, but its made from glass. and also the screen doesnt need to have a full hd display because of its size
The display as far as previous xperia phones go is alot better ,720p on an 4.3 inch screen with 300 + PPI is o.k by most peoples standards .Also Sony went for an IPS LCD display were the viewing angles and outside visibility is a vast improvement over the triluminous lcd display of the z1 and TFT LCD display of the z.So this phone as far as I am concerned is fantatstic.
Banging on that screen is on 720p......its still a higher PPI than the jesus phone!!!! And no1 complains about that! Battery is reportedly 5hrs ish screen on....hate big phones...so 4.3" is ideal...I think sony are going after iphone users who want to switch but don't want a mahoooosive phone
That phone is pretty big for a 4.3 inch. I still have my 3" Xperia mini. Now they should make a 3" phone.
all this about 1080 screens on a 4 or 5inch device is crazy these days , its only as good as your eyes anyway ! im only interested in the smooth running of a device that small, looks the part tho .
one question only, which one you prefer the white one or the lime one? I like white phones but the lime offers something different and a thing to showoff as well..

It's a fingerprint magnet because the is a shatterproof screen protector sitting on top of the screen straight out of the box

Does it overheat? Between that size and the Snapdragon 800 that runs hot, do you face and overheating issues when gaming or movies?

Nick Quaintmere sorry but i can see the difference, i went from an xperia z back to a z1c. especially with my lenses out and looking from a bit more close. its easy to see some pixelation.
mugenjouproject wow you have good sight (not sarcasam) but most of people dont see difrence and its overkill 720p help even on fluidity of device and apple iphone dont even have 720p. but i know i dont see diffrence

720p at 4.3" is not that bad.. Just as clear as a 'retina' display.
I own an Xperia V that has the same display size and resolution.

I have this phone and the tablet and I have video stream problems on both, where it distorts and stops playing, does anyone else have this probem? Sorry I got rid of my apple ipad now never had problems with that!
ended up with a samsung phone and an ipad now im happy :-)
I didn't think the display was that bad on this phone... not great but mediocre at best. I would say the speaker is the worst part of this phone in my opinion.

Most phones attract fingerprints ,dust etc ,what an absolutely idiotic thing to say .The screen is really nice don't really get why u are knocking the screen.I have had all top end phones so I know what's what,this phone is just as good as most phones

Sony said it's plastic, tried to examine one at a store and it feels so much like glass, I suspect it's kind of a carbon fiber plastic/glass? Sony is way too secretive.
