alberach It has objectives added based on the difficulty, attention to detail like enemies reacting to where you shoot them or the smart level layouts ect. Certain things naturally haven't aged the best like the n64 controls and the framerate but for it's time and even now it did a lot of things that were new/above average, plus it was the first FPS on console with a great multiplayer mode along with the campaign.
It is mentioned directly during Doom's slot. Generally, if that happens, it means WatchMojo would have put Wolfenstein 3D in that position if Doom didn't exist, but as they are both produced by the same dev in quick succession (unlike say, Quake 2 which came out later in the decade), they chose Doom.
+*Zer0dog* Yeah, but Half-Life 2 has flaws that Half-Life 1 didn't which people overlook even more. Like not being able to damage NPC's. It was awesome being able to get into a gunfight with Barney if you shot him. It was already realistic and made Half-Life's world feel more genuine. It also played into an interesting aspect of Half-Life in that you weren't necessarily the good guy. You were just escaping Black Mesa. You could be a good guy if you wanted, but you could also be a bad guy and kill all of the innocent scientists and guards. Half-LIfe 2 takes away that level of realism and freedom, makes friendly NPCs immortal and automatically makes the player Jesus.
I used to watch my dad play Duke Nukem 3D, when I was about 7 or 8 years old, and he taught me how to play. I'm a girl, and I've always been a girly girl, so it was so much fun, that I was better at playing DN, than all the boys in my class 😄 Here 20 years later it's still one of my all time favorite games.
It does get cred as the original FPS, but boy that game is basic. I remember even in the late 90s it seemed basic as phuck. Like Zer0dog said, Doom, despite coming out only shortly after W3D, is much more polished, a lot more in depth and has stood the test of time much better.

Nah I’m the one from the future of 2034 and a Quake reboot is released pretty great from so far from what I saw and VR games have declined recently due to a “incident” about some gov’t spying on the VR headset
The fact that Quake isn't on here makes the list's validity questionable at best. What makes video game software special is it completely transcend your opinion. This is literally a benchmark thing...ffs...

"It is hard to define any other game to has more of an impact on pop culture than doom". Very true. The only game my dad knows (and played I blieve) as a complete nitwit in gaming, is Doom. And that says something.
Doom is great, and influenced a hell of a lot of games in the genre, especially with multi player, but Half life also did while pushing through a whole load of new things people didn't expect games like this to have, story, set pieces, and is more well loved and known than doom possibly
I agree. Doom was the definitive proof that video games where the future of entertainment. Best is subjective, but in terms of influence of the genre, nothing touches Doom
That outdated game shouldn't have even made the list. Influential, yes, but objectively among the best of the 90's, no. They should've only given it a honorable mention as a recognition of its influence.

very good list, my only gripe is someone new to video games will think Doom is just a merely popularising gaming product, whereas you didn't mention it's intense inspired music, gun fights and multiplayer. also ot's a great game to jump in every now and then.
I can always count on you guys to pick the titles that are the least hard to find. Nice you showed me great games I already know about, as well as everyone else.
Doom really deserved that number one spot, like you said Doom was so popular that for a time it overshadowed games of similar genre until the term FPS was invented specifically to catologue them all. Half Life may have changed how FPS' were as an art form, but it was Doom that put them on the map.

Valve, the company that made it, also owns steam, so if half life was not good we probably would not have steam, making the PC gaming market significantly smaller
DOOM and Half-Life should've swapped places. How come DOOM, a game that has been ported on so many damn things lost to that? Everybody knows DOOM. Even non-gamers! This list is pure rubbish.
Everybody also knows Half-Life. HL advanced the fps gaming as much as Doom did, but with tons of more rival games, like Quake 2 or Unreal. Doom at its time was a pretty uncontested.
Mandred85 I agree with you, but at the same time only a good hand full got a chance to play the original half life, it was only on pc where doom was ported to current Jen consoles half life 2 is the only one that everyone got to play thanks to the orange box
Half-Life released on both PC, PS2, and even the canceled port for the dreamcast can be found floating around in a somewhat playable state, save for the loading times. Half-Life is the game that spawned mods such as Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Natural Selection, got Team Fortress ported over from quake, Cry of Fear and so on.
