MRIs are free here in Canada but often you have to wait a bit longer for an appointment.
But often the hospitals have to fundraise to buy them then get approval from the local ministry of health to do scans on it.

Shame I can't find any mention of magnetic phosphenes (or that is what I was told they were) - light flashes during an MRI. I had not been expecting them and was somewhat surprised. It would have been reassuring to know before my MRI that some people see them.
