    I think the idea of Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935, should be right up there with your list. Beginning in 1935, it was the first time in human history when drunks and drug addicts were cured by they themselves, one working with another, not by societal laws, lock ups, or church/synagogue/mosque shaming.

      Absolutely agree, but I stand to be corrected, I vaguely recall zero came from India. Then Arabic Mathematicians built upon it.

    • @dlee645
      @dlee645 2 роки тому +2

      @@zaubermaus8190 I apologize for not being clear. I meant for Arabic numerals and zero to be separate ideas.
      Our mathematics would be completely different if we were to try, say, multiplication or long division using Roman numerals.
      As for zero, my first inkling of how powerful it is conceptually came from an episode of Schoolhouse Rock from the 70s: Zero, My Hero.

    • @kennyhagan5781
      @kennyhagan5781 2 роки тому

      Arabic numerals are based on Sanskrit from India, while their script is derived from Hebrew. Zero, we can all agree that we owe the Meso-American empires for both zero and a REALLY accurate calendar.

      I'm still a firm believer of Socrates of Democracy. For those who don't know he logic, imagine you were on a ship, who would you want to sail the ship you happen to be on? Either a crew of experienced harden crew, or your local individual who happen to be ambitious. Everyone would take the experienced crew. That logic also applies to government.
      Socrates logic would imply that only people who have actual intellect of a subject could vote for that specific subject. So, if you know everything about economics and say national health care, you could vote fore exactly those two points. But if you know nothing about national defense or education you would be declined to vote for those subjects.
      This encourage intellectual voting. The only challenge remains, how do we teach everyone the knowledge so all can vote on every subject?

    Galileo was put on trial more for calling the Pope a simpleton than for saying the Earth orbits the sun. And he was a bully of a writer who acknowledged that Copernicus was correct in his assertion that it did so, but said his proofs of it were mostly incorrect. And Galileo himself had some ideas which were in fact wrong - like the idea that comets were not real but optical illusions was his.

    Technically, we have never proven that we aren't the center of the universe, just not the center of the solar system. • @GAMakin
      @GAMakin 2 роки тому

      As yet, apart from THEORY, there is no known limit to the UNIVERSE. IF, as some contend, it IS LIMITLESS, then from the VIEWPOINT, (literal standpoint) anywhere, any point WITHIN would APPEAR to be the CENTER.
      HOWEVER, since the dimensions/limits of this UNIVERSE "THING" are limitless and unknown, one cannot speak of a CENTER, SINCE "center" implies a SPHERE, which is logically contrary to the notion of INFINITE.
      The Ancients made this self-same error in LOGIC in assigning Earth as the apparent center of the Solar System. This mis-perception persists today as "Science", and is best represented by the BIG BANG Theory.
      However, I believe you are correct in one sense: Each of us is a CENTER of our perceptions and the ULTIMATE center of a UNIVERSE OF ONE.
      I'm okay with that. We have LANGUAGE in our favor. A handy tool in defining where our individual UNIVERSE(S) INTERSECT, to in-turn, define the ELEPHANT in the ROOM.

      The RUSSIANS had a similar Maneuver called (by some) THE CRAZY IVAN. It has it's modern evolution in Jet "breathers", but it was first used (hard to believe, thus CRAZY) in prop driven aircraft, most notably the Russian POLIKARPOV. This underpowered, under-gunned "target fodder" for German Aircraft Technology had a unique wing/chord profile, which presaged supersonic wing design.
      The play: Messerschmidt on your six, taking aim. Nose-down, Throttle-up. Messerschmidt follows. Stick back full, roll back loop, cut throttle, neutralize, wings level, THROTTLE PUSH; nose gun stinger (in prop nacelle) and four 7.62 mm ShKAS MGs BLAZING. Empty mags. RUN LIKE HELL FOR THE DECK if you miss.
      It worked, briefly, until the German Pilots "fingered"-out " the detente: FOLLOW, side-slip the loop... DEEP SIX... fire-on Will... Uh... IVAN: crash and burn...
      I talked with a WWII Russian pilot who survived several engagements in this fashion. Two kills. Two doikes. He survived the first. He parachuted out. The German pilot who done him did a wing-over on a flyby, forewent the obligatory "dusting" and IVAN drifted to Earth, still cringing for the kill. In the Second enGAGEment, IVAN went to the ground with his Bird, breaking both legs in the crash. He was nearly incinerated but a farmer pulled him from the wreck: 2nd & 3rd° burns, 15% of his body. He went back into the air in a Lend/Lease RAF rig, Survived, to fly a swept-wing MiG 15 "Fagot".
      Quite a character. Russian IRON Stock. I tell his story, in his memory whenever the opportunity presents.
      Na ZDROVIE!

      Shawn, agriculture could not have begun without fencing. Or the idea of personal property exclusivity yours on the basis of labour expended.
      Agriculture was the physical embodiment of many ideas. Agriculture wasn’t an idea, or a movement, or a readily identifiable development in human evolution. Cities and close concentration of populations was a side effect of agricultural surplus, and the ability to distribute that surplus, and reward those who created that surplus. Thus, portable wealth in the form of money, would be more responsible for Cities than agriculture.

    You should have added evolution to the list. It shows that every living creature that does and has existed are all related. The abrahamic religions believed that men were set above animals and that god would not allow species to go extinct, even crossing plant and animals to get new varieties was considered blasphemous at one point. Evolution showed us that we humans are just an animal like any other, not "the pinnacle of creation" and we rely on the complex interaction of all life on the planet. The theory of evolution is essential underpinning to every biological and medical science, it even has many uses in other fields of study such as computer science. Just as the heliocentric model of the solar system removed us from the centre of the universe evolution placed us as just another species that has evolved, is still evolving and will eventually go extinct.

In 1915, she declared that, thirty-three years earlier, Charles Darwin himself had revealed to her, on his deathbed, his wish to recant the doctrine of evolution in exchange for Christian salvation. This claim was shown to be false by none other than Darwin’s daughter, Henrietta Litchfield, who was with him at the end. She pointed out that Cotton-like Taunton, in Hitchens’s case-hadn’t actually visited him during his final days.

      @@kevintemple245 A lie by a christian who wished to cast doubt on Darwin's theory. Even if Darwin did seek to become a christian, ( he didn't, he had been an athiest for decades by this point) it would make no difference. There are billions of data points and millions of studies that show the theory of evolution to be correct. I am pretty sure that there is something in the bible however that says that Christian's shouldn't lie or bear false witness, some rules or other that Cotton didn't seem to mind breaking.

      Definitely a process but probably including a sequence of novel ideas, probably near simultaneously in a variety of locations by people (women?) who were facing the same climatic problem. For example: “Those seeds I dropped are handily placed. What if I drop some more there? Oh, the birds eat them. What if I push them into the soil? Better, but they are starting to wilt. What if I bring water to them?” And so on.

    Ok, so democracy was not really invented in Athens, as if one were to really think about how the ancient tribes used to function, they would collectively decide on whatever decisions were to be made. And if we're talking about it being implemented on a large scale, check out the 16 great kingdoms/republics of the Mahajanapada period of India. Just look into them. But, in short, two of the kingdoms/republics were oligarchic republics and existed before the Athenian, as the Mahajanapada period existed from 6th century BCE to 5th century BCE, i.e. 100 years before the Athenian copy. So that means that it was Athens but the two Indian states that really should be considered the birthplace of democracy, as they piggy-bagged off of the Indian idea, IDK if they did or not but it seems probable that they did, and implemented it on their soil.
