Unlike most of today's interview hosts, Bill is simply put a great listener. With all the knowledge he has, he could be interrupting the entire conversation. Yet, he chooses to listen. Great lesson right there for all of us.
I just read the book 'Educated' and watching her in this interview is so weird. I knew it was a true story of a real woman but after learning so much about her struggle it was hard to picture her as this woman seated across bill gates. Like her story was so extraordinary and nothing like I've read or heard before it was amazing.
Meghna Pradhan my exact thoughts. Before this, I watched her interview with Oprah and because I read the details of her book I got so emotional watching her speak.
Just finished Ms. Westover's book today! All I can say is wow. I grew up in a rural area, in Montana, just a couple hours drive from where much of this book took place. But we couldn't have been further apart in terms of upbringing. It blows my mind that people can be so geographically close and yet so psychologically different. Super enlightening book.
I was speechless when I finished the book just a couple of days ago. It must have taken a lot of strength (besides excellent writing) to write this memoir. This definitely is the story that needed to be told and read and processed.
I read this book and I am as shocked as I am touched. Tara has a way with words, she was able to describe a very brutal family surrounding her but somehow made them feel human.

I'm Shubham and I'm from India and even I lived her childhood, and her memories and Struggles she made and in a way those struggles made her, I lived every moment of reading Educated. God will always bless her.
I think it's a serious disservice to say Ms. Westover's family is representative of rural America. I agree there are differences between many of the values of those from rural and urban areas, but this family is in a category all it's own.
But she does have insight in how people come from vastly different backgrounds and have vastly different understandings. What she saw in her own family is also reflected in different ways across America, and I think she is right about education not really being about connecting or learning as much anymore - the degree itself has become a tool that propels you into the "educated" in-group, with its values and ideas, without necessarily the introspection and thoughtfulness and reflective learning that education /should/ be. And since education is so expensive now... it can be more divisive by encouraging seperate rich/urban/educated groups and rural/poor/uneducated groups (to make a gross simplification). And that is a problem. Got on a tangent. But the point is that while she doesn't make that claim, she does gain a lot of insight from her own personal experience. Her book resonates because there are so many thoughts, feelings, and insights there that are almost universally familiar. Even if her personal experience doesn't directly correlate or prove her words/thoughts on this topic.
Yes. I was raised (as still am a member) in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, and I can attest that this is not the norm. Not even close. As you say, this family is in a category all its own. If I had been raised with this family, we would have been concerned.

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, from Utah & I had no idea about these alternate belief systems of people in my own faith. Love the video interview! Growing up with many privileges, I definitely took for granted my education and how lucky I was to be given all the knowledge and equipped with all the necessary tools for the real world. But... she has put a lot of effort into study herself, and it obviously was a huge effort, to achieve her goals. What an inspiring story, and it's beautiful how Westover got to share it with the world and eventually meet Gates: it was his scholarship that enabled her to go to Cambridge.
Please don't hate, but we have 607 billionaires at this writing (July 2019) , including Mr. Gates. He picks and chooses, or his people do, who ha awards scholarships to and these scholarships are TAX DEDUCTIBLE, which translates to LESS federal $$ going toward education (for the many) in favor of gifts, which Gates takes MUCH credit for, to a few. And...if he and the other billionaires just paid close to their fair share of taxes, parents would not have to worry about college tuition and graduates would not be buried in debt. Just sayin', folks. Oh, and trust me, they are not going to "leave" the U.S... To where? This country gives corporations a consistent breaks and the corporate tax rate in on the low side of average (look at Wikipedia). Are Bill and Jeff and Warren and George and Elon and companies relocating to the Emirates? To the4 British Virgin Islands? To the Bahamas? I do not think so. And don't hand us that "they create jobs" nonsense. Youy can't get above a minimum wage paying job in their companies without a University degree, which costs a lot of $$, which brings me back to my original point. .
Listened to the Blink about this book. Possibly the most standout one for me, her personal story is absolutely staggering. It only amplifies the academic achievements she's managed to accomplish. Looking forward to picking up her book and really giving it a thorough read at some point, hopefully soon!

I started reading fanfictions in English when I was a teen. Sounds silly, but I think it made a difference. Reading real literature was hard at the begging, though. A Kindle can be a useful instrument to get you started, because you can easily check the new vocabulary, and even revisit it later. It’s much better than using a separate dictionary, because the reading flows. Anyway, one thing I’ve noticed is that the first book by a new author is always harder, because every author uses different words, and has a different style. So reading a series is easier than reading separate books by different authors. And you should probably start with recent books, like Harry Potter, and go for the classics when you have more practice

While i do agree that in general the ones with degrees and the ones without have different school of thoughts, degrees, or a formal education does not necessarily translate to smarter individuals. Learning is all about self interest, the want to know more and satisfy curiosity. Studying, especially in our current system where heavy emphasis is placed on grades, is for swallowing facts so that you can ace a paper. Those facts may not mean much to some. An intelligent mind is one that understands the facts in hand. That understanding or knowing based on proper facts is what sets a brilliant mind apart from a mediocre one in which both could have obtained degrees. Tara Westover to me has a brilliant mind. Without any proper guidance, she maneuvered her way through and had sought fantastic understanding in areas she is strong at.
Why is this a only a three minute video with a hundred cuts in the dialogue? You put two highly educated, accomplished people in a room together with a high level of production - why not show the whole conversation?

I read the book. There are many things i didn't understand. Maybe i will never understand. The vocabulary is hard. On every page im searching the web for meanings.She described about her life but she didn't clearly describe how she was successful with her education. We can think like she figured it out but it's not easy. Maybe a little more on that would make it much meaningful.

The TWO Americas, absolutely agree! Saw a video early this morning about a colored woman explaining that in some parts of the country young colored women in school are not treated equally by other group of people. This woman gets attacked by an opposite group, knowing their side and experience and not the woman's experiences. Instead of showing compassion to everybody, what do we do? We destroy each other in most minute way possible, instead of unity.
The book ended with Tara being almost completely pushed out from her old world. If someone from the other side, after entering this side, can't even integrate or negotiate an co-existence with the original side, how could you expect these two sides, the two complete different parts of America (or any country for that matter), to come to an understanding of each other.
What an irony! Here is a woman that overcame almost insurmountable odds to earn a PhD speaking to a billionaire who, from my current knowledge didn’t graduate from college. Yet, Bill went on to form a company that continues to thrive in the tech marketplace. Question 1: is a college degree necessary for success in life? Question 2: are there jobs or professions that can take a different educational tracks, yet still provide the knowledge resources many people need to earn a decent wage and live a comfortable life? Question 3: There will continue to be occupations that require more brawn than brains, such as mining natural resources such as essential metals and elements such as lithium. Why is there no or limited mention given to the trades for future planning? Certainly, there are many other questions that could be raised, but don’t seem to be addressed by those advocating for the elimination of fossil fuels. Finding clean uses of these resources should be at the forefront in the growth and maintenance of our current and future ways of life.

Here is a woman that overcame almost insurmountable odds to earn a PhD speaking to a billionaire who, from my current knowledge didn’t graduate from college.
Yet, Bill went on to form a company that continues to thrive in the tech marketplace.
Question 1: is a college degree necessary for success in life?
Question 2: are there jobs or professions that can take a different educational tracks, yet still provide the knowledge resources many people need to earn a decent wage and live a comfortable life?
Question 3: There will continue to be occupations that require more brawn than brains, such as mining natural resources such as essential metals and elements such as lithium. Why is there no or limited mention given to the trades for future planning?
Certainly, there are many other questions that could be raised, but don’t seem to be addressed by those advocating for the elimination of fossil fuels. Finding clean uses of these resources should be at the forefront in the growth and maintenance of our current and future ways of life.
