    The areas hit first gave the residents little time to escape. The earthquake itself went on for six minutes, so most people were just trying to stay standing. The elderly and the sick didn't have much of a chance. Some thought their three story building was high enough. Please don't judge.

      How can we judge the Japanese brave people. First they were shocked from the Massive, long and scary earthquake 😳. Then when they thought they survived the earthquake and the right thing was to be in the lowest place, than all of a sudden they had to run to the highest place. And then again to another highest place. They didn't take anything from home. No family photos, no clothes and not even coats, blankets and food. How they survived after the Tsunami. The little kids suffered so much and they are so traumatized 😢😫forever. Seeing their homes and maybe their parents and families all destroyed in front of their eyes. How come people and children still want and have the strength to live. We can never judge or criticize, just admire their courage to live and function in such hard and Chaotic situation. I hope they will have better life and happier life full of love and joy. All the Best to them. Efrat. Israel

    There was a lot of warning in Kessenuma. Instant warnings on television, on cell phones, the tsunami horn was blowing, the firemen and police were driving around telling everyone a tsunami was coming. And yes, I believe the man you heard was reporting to his superiors what he was observing in the bay. But sometimes ten minutes or twenty minutes is not enough to find your pet, your kids, your car keys and make it through traffic to the hills. So many people died trying to escape in cars. Awful.

      And in many towns and cities in Japan, the combination of the land being lowered by 3 feet from the earthquake, plus the massive tsunami (30 feet or more) led to a large number of "Evacuation zones" being flooded and impacting those who had actually evacuated

      You have to imagine people in the middle of their daily lives,working,taking care of the home,children,elderly people,everyones in the middle of something,not expecting what's to happen,first a major earthquake,that goes on for about 5 minutes,when it finally winds down,you have to quickly turn your thoughts/emotions to immediate situation,are you injured,do you need to turn the gas off,are your elderly parents/in laws who live with you safe or injured,what about your children if they are at school or home,is your home damaged that you can't get out,than you hear the tsunami sirens,now you have to think about evacuating,get your parents/inlaws,children together,while dealing with violent aftershocks,taking into consideration that parents/inlaws are elderly and can't move too fast,or are sickly/disabled,what if you don't have a car,if you are at work you are concerned about your family and anxious to get to them,you start out for the tsunami shelters or local high spots,but your family isn't moving fast enough,the children are too young,their little legs can't run like an adult,the elderly are hobbling along as best as they can,but you have several blocks to get to any shelter...this is only an example of how it could be for everyday people.

    I looked up the location of where this video may have been shot at on Google Earth and it looks like it was filmed atop the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives Bldg in Kesennuma Harbor. If you do a streetview of that building you can see that the whole bottom floor is retrofitted to withstand floods such as a tsunami. Whoever designed this particular bldg and the one next to it saved many lives on this day, including the amateur videographer, who I think did a great job capturing the entire events of the day. Rest in peace to those who perished as a result of the earthquake and tsunami this day.

So many did not take the threat that seriously and didn’t head for higher ground - some places the inland water assault reached 60 feet deep and obliterated many neighborhoods and communities. This is just astounding and horrific. I can’t imagine anticipating the arrival of the tsunami with what I can only imagine would have been complete terror and then the strong aftershocks that you can hear and see happening with the camera jolting around and the sound of things being shaken from the strong ground movement after going through the initial 6 minute absolute violence of the main earthquake. And then watching everything around you being just swept away. And then another strong aftershock hits while the tsunami is sweeping everything away. When that massive round oil storage thing came toward the building they were in and actually hit the building (based on the sound I’m assuming it hit the building) I think I felt like I was actually there because I had a panic feeling like I was in that building with them. Just an unbelievable video and this is 1 of 6 parts. Wow! I can’t imagine what the rest of the 5 remaining videos in the series will reveal.

I can only imagine, on hearing about the tsunami the person went to view the effects on the Californian seaboard, not expecting it to be anything major. Three feet is actually quite high. If I had been in a similar situation I would probably have done the same thing, taking the precaution to stand upon a raised point which I would consider to be high-ground. All but one of them perished, including the young lady who chose to stay and warn her countrymen. What amazes me is how nonchalant they are at the beginning. My mother in law passed 4 yrs. ago. She lived with us and passed knowing I loved her even more than I love my husband. She said she’d never live in Japan again because of her fear of this. She was royalty to the end. Not a day goes by still we mention her. And theses Japanese lost everything...praying daily for Japan even now❤️

    I thought id seen every piece of footage concerning the earth quake and the tsunami, but this one is new to me. Broke the mooring rope to that car/people carrying vessel, which just shows it strength, but then to see all the cars, just tons of them. The sad part, is most people tried to flee via their car, so you can be sure a lot of those cars are occupied by people. Even a lot of the evacuation zones went under water, which is truly tragic, but they never thought a magnitude 9.0 earth quake would happen, let alone the sheer size of the tsunami! sad fact it was a record breaker on both counts. It took so many lives, especially the old. I pray for all those who died, and all those who are still suffering almost 10 years on. The other sad part, is that a lot of the reconstructed buildings are STILL made of wood, which is hard to believe they would do that. The good news, is that a lot of areas now have evacuation towers, that are very tall, higher than this tsunami was.

    Holy sh*t!!! I hope the building they were in was sturdy enough to withstand the tsunami. That must've been so freaking scary with the water surrounding you from everywhere like that. Definitely one of the scariest tsunami videos I've seen from Japan so far.

    I heard mention on another video about the 2011 Tsunami that one person died in California as a result of going down to the shoreline to take some photographs. What depth, or height was the tide on the Californian side of the Pacific?

    People keep commenting on how amazing it was that the building these people were in survived. They are actually in the main Coast Guard station for that harbor area. It is very tall, to give a full view of the harbor, and reinforced steel and concrete to weather even the worst storms. Still, when that tank hit it I was afraid for a minute that the damage might be too great, but although they were all safe they had to watch countless people die and their town be destroyed. I hope they found some peace and acceptance in the end but the experience will never totally leave them. Prayers to erase the terrors that live on in your dreams.

    They must have been shitting themselves I know I would be. Seeing the water get higher and higher and every single structure around you get smashed and ripped to pieces. All I would be thinking while my heart is pounding thru my chest is this building should be strong enough to hold right ?....RIGHT ?? And please God dont let one of those ships crash into us. Omg I cant even begin to imagine the not knowing.

      You think its possible to create a seawall that reduces a tsunami, yet still allows ships into port? If it were possible, that would be great!! I imagine officials would not want to pay for it, and not consider the savings

    • @tld5500
      @tld5500 10 років тому +2

      will haston I agree with most of the things you said. We can make the waves crash further out, dissipating the energy, with surf brakes. As far as mining rock, arent the mountains inhabited already?? People should not build near shore, period. They should build at higher elevations, well above the flood lines. Anything below, should be raised on stilts, columns, to allow water to flow.

    My sister and b in law were there at the time but they didn't see the flooding. They are avid kayakers, lucky they were not not on the coast. Flights were cancelled, they were on a commuter train, they felt sick before they realized it was a quake. There were several tremors they felt. Crazy eh? My brother in law was in the LA quake in the 80's, there on a convention. My kids were visiting India when they had the 2005 quake and tsunami. God is preparing us in British Columbia for the big Pacific quake due any day now.

    I think it was three feet. But remember, it would be a series of powerful waves; even at only three feet it could throw you against the cliff and suck you back out to sea and throw you back against the beach, and drowning would be a distinct possibility.
