We host a roundtable the morning after Donald Trump accepted the Republican nomination for president on Thursday, just five days after surviving an assassination attempt, delivering the longest acceptance speech in convention history. Trump began with a somber recounting of what happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet grazed his right ear, and soon went off script to deliver a rambling diatribe against various political enemies and repeatedly demonized immigrants. “The first three or four days of the convention were pitched as a display of unity,” says Benjamin Wallace-Wells of The New Yorker, who says the nominee “got in the way” of the party’s plans. “Trump was just straightforwardly weird.” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, founder of Futuro Media, says the vicious anti-immigrant rhetoric from Trump and almost every other speaker throughout the week is built on lies. “If everything that he said is true, then our American economy would be tanking, right? And, actually, there would be rampant crime across the streets. That is not the truth. And even Trump supporters … know that’s not the truth,” says Hinojosa. We also speak with former Ohio state Senator Nina Turner, who says both Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance are promoting a false populism that does not actually support workers or challenge the power of big money. “We do need a president that will put the working-class people ahead of corporations. We do need a president that will line up the supposed values of this country with policy. The problem is, President Donald J. Trump is not it, and neither is J.D. Vance,” says Turner, a senior fellow at The New School’s Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy.

My grandfather was a legal immigrant and he disliked people who came over who did not want to MERGE with the country that they MOVED to!! He always understood Spanish but was PROUD to speak English!!
Same with many of my relatives. They came legally for the most part, and for those that didn't, they had to wait years to become legal citizens and residents. Mind you also trying to abide their respective state's laws.
Yup. My grandfather came from Europe after his siblings came here after being orphaned in Hungary. They all entered legally. It was difficult.
One by one they came. First the oldest who then worked and brought over the second oldest. They both worked and brought the third, and so on until all 8 were here. Took them 15 years. While in Hungary they worked essentially as slaves all that time after their parents passed. And the jobs they got here were not very good. But they did it all legally. Without taxpayer help.
It is important to also note that in order to enter, there had to be a sponsor with a minimum amount of money saved. This was to make sure no one who entered would be a burden on the U.S. citizens. And it took people years to save up enough for just one person to enter.
But yeah, today's immigrants have it so much more difficult to enter. Righto.

I am so sick of Democrats being divisive. In 2020 Trump was trying to tell us what his Intel told him that there was a virus from China and too freaking. Just wash your hands and stay home. He immediately got an isolation ship and supplies for New York. Democrats adamantly refused to work with Republicans and start calling Trump a racist even, filling out paperwork saying that nursing homes had to take the L. What are people supporting when they support Democrats? They aren’t rejecting because Democrats are the ones creating the divisiveness. Trump is talking about "illegal aliens", not law abiding people seeking entry the legal Constitutional way of entry.
Trump specifically said he will be a president for all citizens. That excludes legal migrants. Also he continued to refer to citizens throughout the speech instead of legal migrants. I think it's fair to conclude he is demonizing all immigrants.

The auto-deletion of innocuous comments the past few days has been truly extreme.

I lived in AZ and the only people you see doing all the landscaping work at 5 in the morning is the Mexican people! And AZ is beautiful with all the cactus and gorgeous palm trees, who do you think is doing all that work? You don’t see many white men out there in the hot sun! Even in NYC..i lived in NYC for 12 yrs, at that time many illegals worked in the restaurant, cleaning services, dry cleaners, all those sectors were filled with illegal workers..so from my experience many people came illegally since a long time ago and now it's getting worse than before.

I saw a bus load of them in the town next to mine. The town is 80% Mexican and 20% white/ other . I know they dumped them off there because it's primarily Spanish speaking . It was very sad , they didn't have proper warm clothing on ( it was jan/feb) . All dressed in shorts and sandals . These people had nothing but clothes on their back . There would not be a problem with illegal immigration if employers here stopped hiring them. Where I live there is a huge demand for cheap labor by employers who can afford to hire legal workers and pay a decent wage. But because these people care only about money, they hire illegal workers for construction, work as maids and nannies, etc. truck loads of these workers line up near the hardware store in my town every morning. Employers go and pick daily workers. They choose who ever will work the cheapest. People who are moving choose illegal worker with a truck instead of a real moving company. It’s all about greed and saving a buck. These employers need consequences, but no one does anything. Why doesn’t an undercover cop go and ticket the employers at the hardware store parking lot? It’s not the immigrants. It’s the greedy folks who live here. Of course poor immigrants are going to go anywhere there’s work! We need consequences for the wealthy people in this country who break the law. But guess what? They’re running the country!
I think it was more than 15 years ago there was a bill to require employers to prove the people they hired were legally able to work. But somehow the various PACs; big business, even unions all helped shout it down.

@@curtrice1264 it depends on the status whether or not a migrant is eligible for a legitimate SS#. Some are here on green cards or work Visas or schooling among other things. If a migrant falls into one of those categories, while they are not a citizen, they are eligible for SS#’s and pay taxes, including FICA, while working.

What's wrong with wanting to enforce the laws that already exist and have existed for decades? I don't see why anyone would be against that. If someone comes to the US, and their very first action is to break established laws on entering the country, what makes anyone think they would follow any other laws? This is reflective of poor policy of the DHS under Mayorkas and dishonesty in the practices of it, such as using justifications like “no more housing capacity” that are not listed as justifications under the statute to release migrants into the country.

As someone who is dealing with immigration lawfully, I stand against illegal aliens. I'm not against immigrating to the United States legally. Breaking laws to enter a country does not make you an immigrant.
Okay so first of all..... I have severe doubts you are actually an immigrant you were probably born white and in the Midwest somewhere same as I was.... That said, I will play along and say okay you are doing it legally cool BUT the GOP twists meanings and words to screw up what is considered "legal" in their nonsense rhetoric designed to terrify easily frightened people. Meaning that if an asylum seeker does not cross at a port of entry the GOP will call that person an "illegal immigrant"..... which as I have said many times to other people I get it that SOUNDS correct if you do not think about it too long which is why the GOP gets away with it. The problem is that an asylum seeker can get into the country anyway they can and ask for asylum and they are still considered a legal asylum seeker. This is a large majority of the "illegals" that the GOP talks about..... most of the others come in legal at ports of entry then overstay their visa either intentional or accidental which with how screwed up the GOP made our system..... is pretty easy to do.
