    All BLACK. Can there be any doubt... The Pepsi would be great, but no so much under a suit, the Coke is caught in no-mans land between flash and stealth, but the all black is purrrfect.
    I’ve had my P series all-black for nearly 20 years and wore it every day for the first 10 years and on rotation with my Speedy Pro for the next 10. Other than the obvious timezone use, I’ve used the bezel to time short durations (everything from brewing tea, to parking meters) by lining the triangle up with the minute hand, and long durations (slow cook pork) by lining the triangle up the with red 24hr hand. I’ve swam with it, I’ve skied with it (Niseko, twice), I’ve worked in the garden with it, and here’s the thing, I’ve had it serviced by Rolex twice in that time, and every time it’s come back indistinguishable form new. As I type, it’s accurate beyond belief. If I leave it crown down over night it loses ~1 second per day, and if I leave it dial up it gains ~1 second per day, which means that I only have to reset it if it winds down. It’s the only watch I’d ever need, but my lovely wife gave me a Speedy Pro as an engagement present around 10 years ago, which is why it doesn’t get as much wrist time as it used to.

      Thanks Austin. The funny thing is that when I had it serviced back in 2007, I had my local RSC put new bezel put on it. It wasn’t until I saw your videos on GMT-2 bezels that I even knew that there were serifs on originals P series bezels. I dug up a old photo of my watch before it got the new bezel and sure enough the serifs were there, and naturally aren’t there now. I know that the collectors would pass on my watch with the non-serif bezel, but it really doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t think of it as an investment, which means I don’t baby it. If I bang up the bezel, it’ll get a new one. If I scratch the crystal, it’ll get a new one (it’s on it’s 2nd btw). It’s my personal definition of a perfect watch, and so I just wear the hell out it, and will never sell it.
      PS I love Japan and I’m really loving your Rolex hunting videos in the various prefectures.

    Fantastic video Austin. Although they say that once you’ve gone black, you never go back, I’d go with a coke beezel. Great question from Ron the shrink.

    As an owner of a 16710 Black bezel watch for the last 15 years I can tell you I love it more now than ever.
    I intend to buy a Coke and eventually a Pepsi bezel from the Rolex London sevice centre so that I can have even more fun out of wearing it.
    Therefore.......
    Ron, buy the best set you can find for your money, regardless of bezel colour and buy the inserts afterwards.
    Great video Austin.

    Go for Coke Ron, unless you want to keep hearing “nice sub”. Alternately get some replacement bezel inserts so you can have a Coke, Pepsi or all Black in one.
    Btw all bezel inserts have different hues so I won’t worry about that too much. Judge those on a case by case basis.

    With respect Ron the real question is whether I should buy a 'Swiss Made' later Superluminova dial that will not gain patina or an earlier Swiss T25 tritium dial that is a living dial and will go creamy/toffee coloured - In 25 yrs from now the tritium dial one will be TWICE the value of a Swiss made dial as they are a scarce resource and over the next 25 yrs ALL Rolex dials will be Swiss Made superluminova so they'll be de riguer - if I could only give one one piece of advice to collectors it's this - BUY TRITIUM on any neo-vintage 16710/14060/16610/16600 it will pay you back in spades !!!

    • @paulthorpe766
      @paulthorpe766 4 роки тому

      And just a follow up, as I'm sure some of will say 'twice' the price no way🤥...I've dug out my records from collecting in 70s/80s/90s -in 1979 a used gilt gloss dial 5513 was 20% cheaper than a Matt dial version, in 1989 a used Matt dial 5513 was 10% cheaper than a gloss dial 5513 and in 1995 a Matt dial sea dweller 16660 was 15% cheaper than a gloss dial. In 2020 all 3 examples I gave the earlier rarer (and initially 'old fashioned' to buying public) version are now close to 'Double' the price of the later ubiquitous model🤔

      I love tritium, but I also like taking my watches to RSC. Having a tritium dialed watch certainly takes more "effort".

    • @paulthorpe766
      @paulthorpe766 4 роки тому

      @@watchsymposium you've got a point Austin with the really older stuff (I use Stephen Hale watches London for those) but my RSC are fine with 1970,80,90 tritium watches as they will not replace dial or hands insert etc if you make it clear when you send it in for a quote - they understand wiping investment value now certainly better than they did 20 yrs ago - They won't though service a piece and keep the dial hands in-situ if the dial and hands are flaking off or cracking, but this is very rare anyway and that when I use a specialist. So neo vintage there really is no additional cost to ownership and say a 16570 is currently slightly less than a later model but they'll go up very well now especially first two year of production ones with old 16550 dials fitted

    The blue on the Pepsi might bug the eye in the long run but the Coke is perfect. The two tone with the black can’t go wrong on a black dial.
    Just half bezel of red and GMT red hand can’t go wrong

    I have fallen totally in love with my 16710. I wear it on the Coke bezel but also have the Black and the Pepsi so you can switch around whenever you want to - as long as you are brave enough 😂 Mine is from 2006 and has the more crimson bezel which I actually like. If I were only allowed to keep one watch in my collection, including my 116520 - it would have to be the 16710, just perfect.....

    Hi Austin!
    I hope you remember me.
    Thanks to your videos, I have bought myself an all black 16700 GMT!
    I’m thinking to get a Pepsi replacement insert. If I bring it to RSC japan, will I be able to buy from them immediately?
    Also, since it’s a 16700, I assume they will not be able to sell me a COKE insert?
    Thanks for advice!

      That's awesome - I love the 16700's. Enjoy your new watch!
      In my experience they won't do it immediately. They always said it would be a few days.
      And, you're right, they wouldn't sell you a Coke insert as those never came on the 16700.

    I have a 2000 ‘Coke’ GMT Master II that I purchased new from an authorized Rolex dealer in 2001. It is my daily wear watch since I have owned it. The red on the bezel has faded to a very light red. I have never had the watch serviced or even cleaned by the dealer. It has typical battle scars from being worn 20 plus years but still looks incredibly well and runs excellent as far as I can tell (never had it on one of those graph machines). Does the very faded red part of the bezel hurt the value of the watch? The black portion has not faded at all. I’m afraid to send it to a RSC because they may want to polish it or change the bezel. I like the fact that it is 100% original. This is my first and only Rolex.

  • @Portland_Living_Life

    I respect you Austin, but you are seriously fanatical about this stuff! I'm pretty picky about my watches too, but I bought a few cheap bezel inserts off of eBay and they're just fine. I mean really, it's just a piece of stamped aluminum that's painted. And the eBay Coke bezel insert is the perfect red color, matching the GMT hand.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  4 роки тому

      I can see how getting something like an aftermarket all blue (AKA Blueberry) aftermarket bezel could be fun, but it would start to bother me after awhile. I'd feel like I was treading into franken-watch territory.

    I have a K serial which is 2001/02 and the clasp code is DT which I have read is 2002 whereas DE is 2001 (can there be overlap?). My all black bezel has serifs, could that combo be original if it is indeed a 2002 piece? I also hear there are no hard and fast transitions between serial letters and perhaps bezels. Some 2002 pieces can be K or Y. Does that concur with your experience? Thanks.

    • @watchsymposium

      @@watchsymposium Good point! Means you don't have to baby it. Also it has the solid end links and holes case, which is in my view the best of both worlds.
      And a good hack you mentioned about how it can be used as a lapsed timer like a sub, with a little simple math!
      The all black is nice because at first glance you can't tell if it's sub or GMT... stealth as you said.
