"He's been in like one and a half movies in his life and he's got like 12 Oscars."
Honestly, so aptly put
The greatest ass kicking in all of film is not in a martial arts movie or a superhero movie, it's completely verbal and it's at the end of There Will Be Blood.
Not even verbal. the first line of dialog is like 10-15 minutes into the movie. It has like a 70 page script or something.
@@randomguy8181 130 page script
Paul Dano everybody. One of the most underrated actors of his generation.
Absolutely.
@@Muckduckly first saw him in Sopranos as Ajs friend
Overlooked
As great as I will say he is, I must say Day Lewis is far better.
Incredible movie, an all time great. And that Jonny Greenwood score is one of my favorites ever.
For those who don't know, Jonny Greenwood is from the amazing band Radiohead...
This movie is a fucking master character piece. I remember watching this when it first came out. I kept waiting for Daniel to have some kind of redeeming quality but NOPE!!!!!!
If you want more Daniel Day-Lewis, watch Gangs of New York by Scorsese
I think he mentioned that he has seen every Scorsese movie.
'In the name of the father' is the one they should watch.
I love how giddy you were about this movie. I saw it in theaters when I was 17 years old. Blew my mind. All the performances, the editing, the music (Prospectors Quartet is one of my all time favorite pieces of music). This is my all time favorite film for sure. 2007 was a ridiculous year for film. Anyways, that was fun to see your reaction!
Jimmy- right there with you. I watch this and find myself not blinking just staring in awe at DDL’s character. It’s insane on a level I don’t think I’ve seen in anything else. Just an incredible performance.
One of the greatest films ever made! Period.
I go back-and-forth between There will be Blood, and No Country for old Men as to which is my most favorite movie of all time.
Same here, and both made in the same year!
2007, hell of a year
@@crust8016 Yeah, 2007 was one of the best years for film, ever.
@@mwilsonUT Definitely. Zodiac, The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, Hot Fuzz, Death Proof, American Gangster, Before the Devil knows your dead, Ratatouille, Eastern Promises, and of course the aforementioned two
Fun fact: both films were made in Marfa, Texas and the oil fire smoke in There Will Be Blood, smoked out the set and closed a day of shooting for No Country For Old Men. 2 masterpieces made next to each other. Amazing year of cinema.
Think about this for a second. This came out the same year as No Country for Old Men, and The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford. Crazy good year.
Fun fact: the composer, Johnny Greenwood, is the guitarist for Radiohead
He killed the guy pretending to be his brother because the one person that he felt he could actually open up to a bit turned out to be an imposter.
I mean it's obviously not a reasonable thing to do, but Plainview isn't exactly a reasonable man.
I love this movie so much, what a surprise.
I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD!!!!!
i actually just saw the SNL parody of this last week. Bill Hader's Daniel Plainview is on the nose.
I watched this 3 times in a row in theaters when this first came out, another one that came out that same year that hit me just as hard is No Country for Old Men which I HIGHLY recommend u guys watch, great reaction guys
which one do you prefer
@@wtfisditvoorbullshit No Country for Old Men was a better film, but Blood had better acting
@@redtailzephier4141 no country somehow feels much longer, not even in a bad way, i watched them both not long ago and there will be blood is probably my favourite movie of all time now
Jimmy I failed you; I know how much you love great antagonistic characters, how could I fail to recommend this masterpiece to you?! Thank you to whomever recommended it and thank you Jimmy for loving it! It was quite an experience in the cinema, let me tell you!!
“He’s sleeping in the gutter...” .... holy shit lol I’ve seen this film a few times and that parallel never occurred to me
Oh shit! It's my favorite film of all time! You already did In Bruges, so this is now two out of my top ten!
I'm so glad to see so many people love this movie. When I was 18 i bought this on dvd and none of my friends were into it so I felt like I was sitting on my own private goldmine (or oil well) for years. Jonny Greenwood is an unadulterated genius.
I Have Abandoned My Child!
One of the most masterfully helmed films ever made! I’m glad you loved it!
Check out Last of the Mohicans, In the name of the father and my left foot.
This movie is....mesmerizing. I care very little about that time period, the subject, the oil industry or anything. However, this film is absolutely mesmerizing. Daniel Day-Lewis absolutely deserved the Academy Award for this film. The acting by Paul Dano makes me think that his role as Riddler in THE BATMAN will be wonderful.
Last of the Mohicans is 🔥🔥
The best movie I've ever seen by far. The acting, cinematography, the character arc of Daniel Plainview, costumes, set design all perfect. To watch Daniel spiral out of control until his greed completely devours him was amazing. And the freaking music score is one of the best I've ever heard. I've seen this movie a dozen times and I will watch it at least a dozen more.
Daniel day lewis: 11 movies, 6 nominations, 3 wins. Those are goat numbers.
Never clicked a video this fast. One of my favorite films of all time, even though it's certainly difficult to digest for many. Much love, dudes
Yeah, I have no idea how you could fall asleep during this movie. This is one of the finest movies of the last 20 years.
It's funny to me because I love the movie but I did fall asleep the first time I tried to watch it. Was my own fault. Started it at 2-3AM. I think I ended up just starting over completely fresh the next day and it's just a fantastic movie. And, as a soundtrack nerd, Jonny Greenwood got screwed by the Academy with their rules that deemed his score ineligible. Absolutely would have won that year.
For me it all comes down to Daniel Day Lewis' performance. Its just fascinating to watch, I was riveted to the screen first time I saw this film. And honestly, every time after that as well. That said, I'd personally put The Godfather as my number one film of all time.
The best performance in movie history.
👏👏👏
He's pretty damn good in My Left foot and In the name of the father
The reason Plainview is sympathetic is that he has admirable attributes in addition to the fucked up ones. The entire opening sequence (like 25 minutes) is dedicated to showing his ingenuity, drive, work ethic, strength, competitive/industrious nature etc. Its like how people love Steve Jobs even though he was an "asshole" and some people are like "why do people like this jerk?!". The Jobs/Plainview critics are naive and dont understand biology (that there are attributes that are rare and necessary for civilization, and that people in these roles need to be ruthless jerks). People like Plainview have other attributes that the average person doesnt have, and it makes them admirable in a different way.
Jimmy, what's weird is I clicked on this to watch your reaction and early on I was like, "This is going to end up in his top 5 when this is over." I knew Daniel Day's character and the cinematography was going to send you over the moon. Well, it sent you to Mars!!!!!
Whoa, man. I really feel special, now!!! Thanks, Jimmy Mac!!!
In The Name Of My Father one of my other favorite Daniel Day Lewis film's. It doesn't get much love but it's great.
Great movie. Great performance.
It's 'THE father', and I agree it doesn't get much appreciation. Everyone is suggesting Gangs of New York, but no one seems to know of 'In the name...' . I'm glad I found this comment.
and thats why daniel day lewis has 12 oscars from one and a half movies
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE.
check out Warrior on HBO Max. fills the gap while waiting for Peaky Blinders quite nicely and has some of really great/ action/fight scenes. created by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee co-creator) and based on an original tv treatment and notes from Bruce Lee.
Daniel Day Lewis is the GOAT.
If Shawshank Redemption or No Country for Old Men isn’t in your top 5....then you haven’t watched Shawshank Redemption or No Country for Old Men! This was a great review of outstanding movie
shawshank is amazingggg
One of my all-time favorite movies. Absolute fucking masterpiece. One of maybe 5 movies I had the pleasure of watching in theatres and immediately after finishing said "that's an instant classic" (others are No Country for Old Men, Birdman, the Dark Knight, Hero, and the Wrestler). Usually it takes a minute to let shit marinate, but, goddamn, sometimes the performances knock it out of the park with no room for doubt.
This has been one of my favorites, and I suggest this movie a lot. I’m glad you guys saw it.
I knew you'd love it. Definitely feels like your kind of movie.
One of my all time favorite movies, and for sure imo one of the greatest movies ever made! With also for sure one of the greatest endings in movie history!
This movie is possibly my all time favorite film. This and maybe The Lobster.
Ive watched this movie countless times and broken it down piece by piece, and I never got the sleeping in the gutter symbolism. Great observation, that earned a sub.
You guys need to watch Network.
Yeah this is the best movie of the 21st century.
You gotta have known Macram would of loved this!
Hell of a movie~!
"You gotta have known" and "would of"? Man,your grammar is terrible.
Supposedly they cast another actor as Eli, but he was too intimidated by DDL's completely off-the-wall performance and it didn't work. So they found Paul Dano, who gives as good as he gets.
The soundtrack by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead is just as much a character in the movie as Daniel!
My favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performance is 'In the Name of the Father' (1993), also one of my favorite movies of all time. Paul Dano is an incredible actor, still have to watch one of his movies 'L.I.E.' (2001) with another amazing actor Brian Cox. Years later they made together another movie, 'The Good Heart' (2009). Paul Thomas Anderson is (of course) one of my favorite directors, 'Hard Eight' (a.k.a. 'Sydney'), 'Boogie Nights' (also in my top 10), 'Magnolia', 'Punch-Drunk Love', ' The Master', 'Inherent Vice' (needs multiple viewings before you're really gonna dig it, well, I did), and his last one I haven't watch it yet (got it in my collection tho) 'Phantom Thread' are all recommended, especially 'Boogie Nights' (about the 1970s and early 80s porn movie industry) and 'The Master' (obviously based on the origin of the Scientology Church), 'Magnolia' is also (although they're all) amazing!
"He's sleeping in the gutter"
Nice.
I think I've watched this movie more times than any other, and I'll be rewatching it again through the years. Possibly my favorite movie. Sometimes I even rewatch it just to hear the film score. Here's a suggestion for another movie with Daniel Day Lewis; "Gangs of New York".
Everybody keeps suggesting that movie, but no one seems to remember 'In the name of the father', if they even know of it.
In the end, Daniel Plainview achieved every single last thing he hoped to accomplish. Beware your ambitions.
You guys would love Gangs of New York, with Daniel Day Lewis - one of his best. Check it out if you haven't already. I also echo No Country for Old Men from one of the other commenters.
I've seen both.
@@JimmyMacram Which do you prefer?
Wonder how many times Jimmy has watched since then. I reiterate. This movie gets better every time you watch it.
Twice more. DRAAAIIINNNAGGEEE!!
@@JimmyMacram DRAINAGE Eli you boyyy. Drained dry.
Paul Dano is best in this, but I first discovered him in Little Miss Sunshine which is a very very good movie I recommend.
The novel this was based on, "Oil!", is by Upton Sinclair, a famous American socialist best known for his other novel, "The Jungle", which caused so much public outcry at its depiction of conditions in meatpacking plants-based on (effectively) investigative journalism on Sinclair's part-that it inspired the passage of the Food and Drug Act and the creation of the FDA to enforce it. It's been said that he aimed at America's heart and hit its stomach.
The film is amazing, and Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano are both incredible; I've rarely seen such a realistic and believable depiction of psychopathy/narcissism in film. The political subtext of the capitalist robber baron being an irredeemable monster isn't bad, either.
For what it's worth, I think the intended target was John D. Rockefeller more than anyone else, but astute comparisons nevertheless.
Every time I see that last scene I can't help to think how terrifying I would be if I were that actor and Daniel was chasing me like that...
No one:
Me at 3am: “I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!”
This is one hell of a movie. I am a big western movie fan...this isn’t exactly a cowboy type movie, but late 1800s and early 1900s was still an interesting time!
I had to move last year, and the words THERE WILL BE BLOOD kept going through my mind.
This film is a masterpiece. Some people fall asleep watching this, some people fall asleep watching Sex and the City :) This has depth. I was loving the soundtrack when I first saw it, wasn't until way later I found out it was Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, which makes sense coz that's my favorite band! They did such a great job, directing, acting, writing. Check out Phantom Thread
for the same Paul Thomas Anderson / Daniel Day-Lewis powerhouse, another amazing film.
Jimmy I'm so glad you love this movie. It's in my top 5 as well. I watch it every few months.
this movie has one of the greatest last lines ever, even if its a little corny, its a cartoon like the rest of the movie "I'm Finished!" I saw this in the theater and HA!'d out loud.
this was a great year for movies. No Country For Old Men is another standout. funny that this was just before the 2008 collapse
this is one of my favourite movie
If you see it maybe three more times, that’s when you better understand what makes Daniel Plainview tick…. All of the clues are there…. Enjoy!
So simple yet so intense & unique & interesting & no cgi or huge action scenes cuz it feels so real & done with acting & just dialogue for 90% of the film..... Folks wish they could think this shit up 💯
The mud beat-down scene is Dano's Riddler origin story.
He left that boy on train with his trusted guy
The guy who was stopping the boy
Another great movie from 2007 I think you guys would enjoy is Into the Wild (based on the book of the same name), which was directed by Sean Penn and tells the true story of Christopher McCandless.
One of my all time favorites!
I love that you love this movie!
Paul Thomas Fucking Anderson, guys. The guy is nucking futs. He makes the best movies of all time, but he's out of his mind.
Milkshake scene Oscar worthy
"Gangs of New York" is even crazier!!!!!
One of my favourites.
This is a complex film, with complex characters in it. It is no surprise that Daniel Day Lewis decided to work in this film, despite the fact that it was very different from the types of roles he had portrayed in the past. It was a real acting challenge for him to work on this film, and I get the impression that he enjoyed the challenging work.
The train scene bothered you more because you didnt realize he was being sent to a sign language school....it was only gonna be for a few months
Daniel Day-Lewis is my GOAT!
The greatest acting performance I've evere seen.
The movie is the chip. Jimmy is the salsa. And, Cash is the insane amount of salt I throw on every chip. Love your reactions, keep on rockin. Looking forward to the heart disease.
So I'm salty... i can subscribe to that analogy haha
I can't keep doing this on my own.... with these...... people.
My favorite movie of the 21st century
This movie gets better every time you watch it.
All PTA films in general
can’t wait for paul dano in the batman
Saying that you love watching Daniel but absolutely hate him.. good way of describing it. A thoroughly unlikable person, but he is mesmerizing.
What a delightful surprise. There Will Be Blood is a great movie. Daniel Plainview is a terrible person but, as you mentioned, Jimmy, he is also fascinating to watch.
my left foot,GANGS OF NEW YORK,THE LAST MOHICAN,THERE WILL BE BLOOD,LINCOLN, QUALITY OVER QUANITITY, MY KEYBOARD IS MISSING KEYS AND STUCK ON CAPS LOCK...
The Master is another one you guys should react too!
Daniel Day-Lewis always wins because he’s absolutely amazing. The only time I didn’t think it was deserved was when his role as Lincoln beat Joaquin Phoenix in The Master(another Paul Thomas Anderson movie). Personal opinion. Phoenix is AMAZING in that movie. You should watch it. Philip Seymour Hoffman
Is also unreal. If you liked the music here the same composer did the soundtrack for The Master.
I watched it recently. Both PSH and Phoenix were amazing.
One of my favorite movies
I jumped ahead a bit to get to the movie and a drop in mid sentence when you were talking about somebody saying that she fell asleep halfway through this movie.
I don't know who that was but for one reason and 1 reason alone she should never be allowed to watch a movie again. She obviously doesn't understand how they work, if she can even come close to falling asleep during any movie that has Daniel Day-Lewis in it.
He is that 1 reason I mentioned. If a movie has Daniel Day-Lewis that movie is perfect. The End.
that movie was thor ragnarok. they were also working multiple jobs at the time.
Best movie I have seen in the past 20 years !!! Review One Flew over the coo coos nest
Cuckoo's* nest.
Masterpiece..
Watched time times
And now I'm watching several reactions
I believe that this is the best movie I've seen in my entire life. I've seen it at least a dozen times.
My favorite movie ever.❤
Watch Gangs of New York! Daniel Day Lewis is Phenomenal in it.
You should watch DDL sag awards acceptance speech for this movie. He pays tribute to Heath Ledger and dedicates award to him.
Daniel Day Lewis is the goat.
Awesome reaction. Was fun to watch because I felt the same way when I watched it
Guys, then Dogville is a MUST WATCH for you!!!
