Uchimata to D’Arce Choke: Get Off Your Back, Throw and Submit (No Gi BJJ)

  • Here we look at starting on the ground (on our back, actually), coming up to our feet and hitting a very important throw for no gi jiu-jitsu: uchimata. The sequence finishes with the inverted katagatame, better known as the D’arce. We're covering this because embedded here are 3 key components: 1) using the forward shift to sit up; 2) using the heist to get up to our feet; 3) taking advantage of a bent-over posture to throw. We start down on the bottom of the supine butterfly guard without much space to maneuver. Next we get up into a more dominant position from which we can throw. Finally, we land in an ideal attacking position down on the ground, on top with an advantage. Take a look!

Nice sequence, Brian. Could you show more options like this to setup throws starting from a ground positions? It is a very intersting content for bjj fighters with judo background like me.

Fantastic. I’ve seen Garry Tonon pulled this technique several times in competition. Super interesting to see in finer details. Thanks for sharing

People will hate me for this comment but you should be on bjj fanatics more than many of the instructors on there already

Could you show more throws/takedowns starting from bottom position/guard? my stand up game is not very good and i feel that getting comfortable with these sort of sequences might really help, thank you brian 😁

This is awesome! Tried it this morning and it worked :) Quick question.. when you stand up, does the person with the underhook also have an uchi mata available to them if they get their leg in front of yours? Or do you really need that whizzer to perform the throw?

    • @bzglick

Great to hear 😊 The underhook/seatbelt grip is better for a throw like ogoshi, so you’d watch for that. Uchimata not so much 👍🏼

    Nice sequence!
Can I use it when the partner gets a underhook and enters to the dogfight position, from half guard?
Should I pay attention to any detail in this case?
