Very thorough explanation. Doing all three in one swatch was a genius way of showing it. I wasn't really getting the garter having 2 rows in each ridge but then you pulled it and it all became crystal clear. Thank you for such a well done video
Technically, long tail cast on as well as many of the others are considered the 1st row of knitting. However, the majority of patterns out there do not treat it as such and will usually tell you to cast on, then go onto row 1. Does that answer your question?
Thank you for your post and I'm glad my video helped you. Counting rows can be tricky, especially for new knitters so I'm happy that you now understand it!
Thank you for this explanation! My stitch counter got messed up in my bag and I knew I wasn't at 70 rows, but I was having a hard time figuring out if counting the Vs in stockinette stitch was counting only the knit stitch rows or also included the purl rows. Now I'm confident that I have 34 knit rows and 12 garter rows!
Thank you. I always wondered about the stitches on the needle and now I know. Plus your instructions were really good and so helpful, very clear. Thanks again.
I am so confused. Other videos and blogs say don't count the cast-on. Many say don't count the loops on the needles, but many others say do count that row. Here's what I'm thinking. If I were using a clicker to count my rows and I did count the cast-on row, I would click after I cast on (click 1). Then I would knit another row and click at the end of that row (click 2). Now looking at my piece there would be one row hanging down (cast on) and one row on my needles which I wouldn't count. So that would be 1 row, yet my clicker would indicated 2 rows. Or if I didn't count the cast-on row, I'd have the same problem. I would cast on but not click. Then I would knit my first row that counts (click 1). Now the cast-on row would be hanging down and row one would be on my needles. Yet looking at the piece I would have 0 rows knitted because I would only have cast-on (not counted) and loops on my needles (not counted). What am I overlooking? Thanks
Thanks you so much. Yours was very easy to understand. I will keep it forever. Another site I went to told me to count the stitches on the needle, but I just knew that was not correct. I appreciate you!
I just love all your videos. You are clear and i can understand all. I finally found a new place to go for How to video's. I do have a question about the counting of rows though.. all the others i have watched tell me to count what is on the needle and you say not to. Can you please explain as to why we don't count what is on the needle?
I WAS CONFUSED, I HAVE NEVER COUNT THE ROW ON THE NEEDLE. GLAD YOU CONFIRMED THIS QUESTION, ANOTHER UA-camR SAID THAT WE NEED TO COUNT THAT ROW. GLAD TO KNOW I AM DOING OK THANKS A LOT
Thank you Marialu, I certainly appreciate your vote of confidence. Several decades ago when I learned to knit, a sweet little old lady explained that the loops on the needle are just that: loops on the needle - not a knit, not a purl. Basically, that remaining loop, is what's left behind from the STITCH created on the previous row. At this point, the loops are sitting patiently waiting for further instructions (i.e., knit, purl, bind off or Kitchener graft). I'm hoping that I didn't make this confusing? Feel free to let me know if you think it is! Happy Knitting!!!!
My website is a technical help site but I plan to use my blog (Knitting with Nancy Wynn) to share what I'm working on.On occasion, they're my own creations but for the most part I'm using a variety of published patterns.Have you visited my website? You may find some of my downloads to be helpful. They are geared for the new knitter.
This is very helpful, but I still couldn't get my project fixed. :/ I was working the basket weave stitch and, somehow, I managed to flip flop the right and wrong side. I tried several different ways to right it and I never could. I had to undo it completely and start over.
That's great Brigitte and I'm so happy you found my channel. In case you didn't know it, my videos are geared to new knitters. I hope you are subscribed to my channel because I'll have you knitting sweaters in no time!!!!
I have only learnt garter stitch and knitted a lot with it. the other ones are too difficult for me coming from the garter stitch. Is there a way to make it easier to learn? More garter stitch like?
Can you be more specific? If I understand you correctly, you are having issues with the purl stitch. Please let me know if that's the case and I'll offer suggestions on how to improve your stitch work. : - )
@@WynnKnit thank you for your reply! I learnt that i’m doing a continental stitch/pick knitting/german knitting when I do my garter stitch. Do you know how to knit more similar to continental but stockinette stitches?
@@wronglayerbutok I’m so sorry that I didn’t reply sooner but I’ve been experiencing some heart health issues and have not been feeling great. Still a bit confused... I use the long tail so do I count the cast on? What other cast one are there? I'm a UA-cam learner... Learning to knit off of UA-cam because I can't get lessons
Yes, you do count the long tail cast on row but NOT what's on the needle. As far as other cast ons...there are way too many to list. However for starters, I'm happy you've learned the long tail - you're off to a good start!
Hi Mary and you are right, it can be confusing. Think of it this way, the loop on your needle is incomplete. It’s simply waiting there for further instruction. It’s just a loop and has no identifiable characteristics. It doesn’t look like a purl or knit stitch and with good reason, you haven’t instructed it to be anything beyond a loop. However, if you look immediately beneath the needle, you will be able to easily identify a stitch. That’s because that row (or round) has been worked with knits, purls or a combination of both. This is why we don’t count what’s on the needle because the loops haven’t been worked yet. That said, I’m an old fashioned knitter (45 years experience) and that’s how we were taught. The new knitting generation does things a little differently and many count the loops on the needle as a completed row. My response to this is that as long as you are consistent, do whatever makes you happy. The notion that there are knitting police roaming about is just a myth! 🤣 Hopefully, I answered your question and didn’t confuse you more. I just wanted you to understand where the count or not to count theory came from. ☺️
Where would I be without google and you tube? In a mess, that's where! Thank you so much for explaining this. ;-)
Thank you! I've started my first project in probably over 30 years. It's like learning all over again. At least now I can count my rows! 🙂

So for the garter stitch, can you just count the rolls and times it by two.
If you mean "ridges", you are correct. Thanks for watching my video ; - )
