- The Scott Pilgrim franchise is no stranger to being adapted into other mediums, but how well do they tackle not just the story, but the essence of this series?

I remember reading an anecdote about the movie, coming to the conclusion that Michael Cera playing Scott feels like it's not actually Scott, but someone playing a version of the Scott Pilgrim story, and basically not doing all the side content that actually makes the story satisfying. I think it's a fun way to look at that movie. Like an Any% speedrun.
That is... a surprisingly accurate description on how I felt about Michael Cera as Scott
So, did Michael Cera BLJumped the entirety of Scott Pilgrim?
It gives off similar vibes to someone playing Majora's Mask and not doing the side quests, albeit not missing as much.
Michael Cera is Scott Pilgrim. Period.
I loved the movie when I first watched it, and I still think it’s funnier than the comics due to the pacing of the jokes, but the comics are definitely the best version of the story. They have way more depth than I was expecting. And the “skipping the sidequests” analogy is pretty accurate, you still get a really fun movie that’s a blast to watch with friends but when you want something that adds more substance and context to the characters and story, you go with the comics.
So what happened with the movie as an adaptation:
It was being made at the same time as the book series and went on to tell the same story in 2 different ways on purpose
it was pitched right after Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
so some things from the books were actually taken from the movie and vice versa
It’s weird how he didn’t seem to know this.

As much of an apologist as I am for the movie, I can't disagree with your criticisms, I hope that the Netflix anime that currently in production does the series justice. I should stress that when I say "apologist", I mean "I think the movie is a 7/10".
Netflix will what????
What??
The NETFLIX SCOTT PILGRIM ANIME WHAT???
NOW THE TRAILER IS HERE!
Anime is out and without no spoilers but it's different... And it's AMAZING!!!! HAS ITS OWN VOICE while still respecting the essence of Scott Pilgrim. Make me respect the movie even more for also doing it's own thing it's still Scott Pilgrim and amazing in it's own way. Movie rocks and so does the new show
I honestly hate the phrase "Scott Pilgrim ruined an entire generation of women ". It just gives incels an excuse to make fun of any vaguely scene looking woman
I know girls who took after Ramona when the movie came out but that phase only lasted like 3-4months before they moved on because people change and grow… huh
Im pretty sure people are just joking when they say that, relax man
I completely disagree about the movie, though i understand the criticisms. To me they're their own things and i like Scott and Ramona and almost every character in the movie and think the casting is so good, probably cos this movie was my favourite as a young teen, it'll always be basically perfect to me and references like Puck Man never seemed like pandering, but something that Scott WOULD say and the music is so fucking good.
Sorry you dont enjoy it, its legit one of my favourite movies ever
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010) is my favourite adaptation of Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One” aside from that one time a guy spent an hour explaining Star Wars at me.
The movie was my introduction into the franchise and everything that you’ve said about the characters being portrayed wrongly I understood right in the movie. Like I never thought that Scott loves Ramona “just because” and i understood that they are very deep, but there is not enough time for them to bloom. So maybe your experience is just because you’ve read the books first. For me it was just an teaser into this amazing story. And BTW, I love your videos and character🤍
Got the comics for my birthday having watched the film like 5 times already and I feel the same way!! I do enjoy seeing moments from the comic directly acted into the movie but at the same time it's also weird for me to see some quotes being spoken in very different contexts (power of love for example.) I think that the movie did a fair job representing the "scott pilgrim vibe" so far (I got the colored boxset and I'm like a third through the last compilation) in spite of not having enough time to accurately represent what the comic actually is
Adult Swim made a short, Scott Pilgrim vs The Animation, with Micheal Cera still voicing Scott Pilgrim.
He does a really good job with a more comic accurate version of Scott, andhis voice acting sounds like it was directed very differently from how his acting was directed in the film.
Hopefully that’s a good sign for the anime.
@thomasffrench3639 Hey, Hey! I Feel Fine!
@@Yoshi55577Hey, hey! I don't feel good...
Funnily enough, my first encounter with the Scott Pilgrim franchise as a whole was my best friend basically tricking me into "seeing" it in-theater with a couple of her friends despite us making plans to do something else, and I was so annoyed by the stark change in plans (I'm autistic and therefore hate even _small_ deviations in set plans, let alone ones that upturn an entire chunk of my day,) that I just passive-aggressively played Pokemon Pearl on my DS lite through the whole thing, completely tuning out the whole film and not even bothering to remember he title. (For the record, I had the screen dimmed to minimize disruption for the people who actually wanted to be there.)
How do I know it was Scott Pilgrim in that case, you may or may not ask? Why, it's because well over two years later I stumbled across and binge-read the comic books (which I ended up loving) at my local library and THEN noticed "oh, they made a film adaptation? Neat!" and brought a DVD copy of it to my friend's house to show her my latest fyperfixation, only for her to tell me _that was the movie she'd tried to trick me into seeing._ (Yeah at that point she admitted that she'd planned it from the start, and my clear discomfort on the day of led to her never attempting to pull something like that with me again. And yes, she's still my best friend.)
This video dropped at the exact time of my life I needed to see something like this. I remember reading the visual novels back in the day and absolutely adoring them. The years after I read them I was obsessing over the idea of having a relationship with someone like Ramona, like many idiots that were to young to actually understand the point of the story. I got in a relationship about two years after reading them and it was amazing. We were together for 5 years and broke up very recently, and one of the reasons for us breaking up was that neither of us was changing and growing BECAUSE of the relationship. We broke up in good terms and both want to stay in good terms and keep in contact. Now I feel a huge void in my life without her love and company, but this breakup also came in the right time for me to try to grow and develop as a young adult, it came as a wake up call for me to develop my self love and self confidence, which the lack of was also definitely one of the reasons for our breakup. This video made me remember how much I enjoyed that story and how much it relates to what I'm going through right now, as a stupid and immature young adult.
I know no one cares, but I'll leave this here as a thank you to Ovandal. A simple video can make a huge difference in these sensitive and hard moments of our lives.
That was very beautiful and inspirational to me thank you so much. Very mature perspective to have on a relationship
@@ivemadeahugemistake712 Thank you for reading through my wall of text. I'm glad I could help. Even though my outlook is admittedly mature, I'm still enduring a lot of suffering and pain due to the breakup, so seeing someone else could be helped by my current moment is something that helps me a lot as well
@@MrCraftingchannel I’m sorry that it’s a difficult time for you, I hope you can feel better. But it definitely did help me adjust my expectations for the future + idk come to a new understanding of how they are I guess? So yeah thank you for sharing :P
i love the books, the movie, and the game all for their own reasons. they’re all a fun take on this world in very very different ways and i appreciate them all :)
The movie feels like the perfect time capsule of the 2010s. Videogame references when they were still cool, style and self-awareness before all other comic book movies ruined it, and technology that's dated is just the right way.
It is to the 2010s what The Matrix is to the 90s
I watched the movie, read the books and played the game 10 or 11 years ago, when I was 17/18, and I just loved it. Last year I bought the books (when I first read then, they weren't translated in my language yet) and they hit so different now. With the movie I was introduced not just to the Scott Pilgrim books, but to Lost at Sea and Seconds, books that I love to this day
Bought the books after watching the movie, which i only bought because of some random "useless bars in video games" video where they referenced scott's pee bar in the movie and it looked funny, and was soooo happy to see that there was MORE character development. Still have them to this day. You were the first person to put into words what's wrong with the movie. I always started slacking midway trough watching it and now i can finally explain why. Great video!
I’m a certified newbie to the series, when one of my friends stuck the movie on I fell asleep. Years later I decided to read the comic after I saw an animation and it blew my mind with how good it was. To me I know a series is good when I can remember nearly all of the characters name.
Realizing this came out in 2004 (the year I was born) and during high school being told my art style looks like Scott pilgrim, only to finally read them in my senior year, is kind of a crazy coincidence
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT
My god the amount of guys that identified as Scott pilgrim and just annoyed some random alternative girl talking about how she is their Ramona Flower like an absolute incel was unbelievable
And I bet the guy who made and the one who agree with "Ramona ruined an generation" is that guy, and thought that the girls were pretending to be Ramona while in reality they were just projecting the character into random alternative girls that didn't liked them back
I think one thing to consider about the movie is that writing for the script began in may 2005 and was finalized October 2007 before the final 2 volumes existed. As a result the ending was made only using O’Malley’s notes at the time. This schedule is very apparent when watching the film, as the first two volume would likely have been almost complete before they started writing. However, information from new volumes had to be thrown in to a half finished script resulted in the end product.
I think the reason Ramona is the way she is in the movie is because they wanted Scott to end up with knives and wanted people to root for knives but either test audiences wanted him to end with Ramona or they wanted to be closer to how the book ended maybe both idk
I still love the movie on its own, but god do I love the books way more, and the movie isn't a good adaptation of them after the first 2 volumes
The movie came out before the final novel was finished.
Scott Pilgrim to me: it’s what inspired me to do art as I loved Bryan Maileys style, to which resonated with very well.
My pfp was Scott pilgrim inspired lol.
It's always surprising to me how popular yet niche this series can be. On one hand, there's still tons of loyal fans hoping to see any news of the series even today as shown more recently with the re-release of the video game, on the other hand, it's exceptionally rare to see people approach this series in the format of in depth analyses that take the time to further expand on the way the messages in the story were handled in the source material and what came after. It thrills me to find somebody who actually took a harsher look at the movie adaptation since I believe it really does not do the source justice. I love the movie as a cult classic. The fast paced editing and design choices really give it a unique video game-esque feel that captures SOME of the charm of the comic and to me can be seen as a neat addition to reading to comics. As a translation of the comics? It flopped horribly and I'm disappointed to this day that Micheal Cera was/is considered 'the perfect cast' for Scott when it is indeed the exact opposite of his character. Basically, I'm very glad I ran into this video and absolutely loved the way in which you examined and described the core story told through the comics and how they were translated into other media.
The best adaption was easily the adult swim animation also is fucking top tier
Why is Wallace the hottest one on that pinup
I love how this is my second favorite movie of all time, and my favorite comic and yet I can't help but agree with every single point you brought up lmao good work
it's like after watching breaking bad and better call saul, every other piece of media is just shit 🥲
i honestly love the movie, not as an adaptation, but by thinking of it as a retelling or reimagining.
Holy crap! This is like everything I've felt about this series, done in a really well made video. I always feel like I'm the only one who ever felt this way. Glad I'm not only! Totally subscribing for more!
Its actually uncanny to see how similar your take on this is as mine. Basically 1:1
uncanny? like mr incredible?
I grew up with the Scott pilgrim vs the world and I still love it I started out watching the film and played alot of the game on 360 I never really read the comics but I did do alot of research on all of volumes and I experienced all 6 volumes of the comic dub on UA-cam with a friend recently. Scott pilgrim vs the world has honestly made a special impact on my life and will always be one of my favorite series of all time. I even still play Scott pilgrim the game complete edition on Xbox series x to this very day (since the 360 version got delisted) and I invite my friends and other people online to play multiplayer.
I covered the whole sound track and the anime songs - Aidan valentine vs the world! Lmk what ya think!
Its a shame you didn’t talk about the alternative ending of the movie where Scott goes back to knives instead of Ramona
It's actually insane to me they thought of that at one point, would be a very weird ending
@@Ovandalit could also explain why knives was getting a little more development than usual lol
It wasn’t an alternate ending. It was the original ending. Focus groups suggested that Scott should end up with Ramona, so they changed the ending.
i’m not gonna ask what all those cuts to netflix death note are about
don't ask questions you're not prepared to hear the answers to
@@Ovandal oh no...
Fantastic video! Very fun to watch through and very interesting to hear how you interpret each adaptation, great stuff
“If your boyfriend idolizes Scott Pilgrim… run” bruh I love this movie 😭 not really for the plot I’ll admit but for it’s musical score, it’s visuals and action
I love the movie - I didn’t always but I’ve come around to really liking it for exactly what it is.
I feel like the reason the plot is so half assed is because of the time it was made in. The script got finished midway through the books, they had to adlib the rest. The fact they're making an animated series adapting the books might help based on how much many recent shows have been long miniseries
I love watching you channel ovandal I'm so glad I found your channel
Black lagoon holds up as a wonderful character drama with historical geopolitics thrown into the mix.
I genuinely love the movie, my favorite actress played Kim, it's one of the first movies I saw with her, love her now
Scott Pilgrim vs the World is one of my favorite Michael Cera movie of 2010.
I loved this video! Definitely leaving a sub. I was a bit too young to enjoy Scott Pilgrim back in the 2000s. When I watched the movie with a friend, they told me that the comics were much better, and I loved them soooo much. As someone who just entered his early 20s, I was shocked by how closely I related to these characters, even though technology has completely changed…everything since then. I think the comics are timeless, relatable to twenty-somethings even in 2022.
I disagree with your opinion on the movie but it was nice to hear your opinion.
UA-cam wasn’t notifying me or recommending me this vid, I just got lucky enough into clicking your channel. Here’s a comment to boost your goofy algorithm points for you!
i watched the movie, then read the book and played the video game. i think the movie is a LOT more tolerable without knowing the full context of the story and the characters. i liked the movie a LOT more before reading the books. i don't think it's the worst thing ever, it's style has that edgar wright flair that carries it for me, and the soundtrack is pretty damn good & unique. personally, seeing the movie as its own thing and completely separate from the books makes me enjoy it a bit more LMAO.
i think honestly one of the biggest gripes i have is that micheal cera is scott. this isn't to discredit him as an actor, i just... don't see scott when i watch the movie. in the books, he comes across as kind of a lazy asshole, but is also dorky, reflective, maybe bisexual (headcannon but i see it) and kind at heart guy. movie scott just feels like a very stereotypical cishet redditor who unironically says 'thanks for the gold kind stranger!'. he's like what a 80 year old grandpa thinks all gamers are like.
100% Agreed
It's kinda funny how I grew up with Scott Pilgrim backwards lol, I bought the game for my birthday and loved it so much that I looked for a movie, and then proceeded to find out about the comic 3 years later and it was worth it.
I rarely see Scott pilgrim videos and as a huge fan of the game I'm happy to see people enjoying what's left of the fandom
I genuinely hope that the anime will turn out good (yes there's gonna be an anime series) and actually develop the characters a lot like the book did, since it's gonna be in a more long-winded format from what I assume
Yes, I really hope so! I think a tv series format would help better represent the story
4:14 man I SWEAR if black lagoon actually ends up sucking I’m gonna lose it. I was planning to revisit it as an adult literally next month since I watched in originally in like middle school lmao. I’ve been so pumped to go back to it and see how bad ass it is, I’m gonna use this as a reminder to keep my expectations in check though!
I tried rewatching the first episode with a friend recently and it was just like. really mid imo 😬
So, what did you think of ot after revisiting?
Scott likes Ramona cause the subspace highway goes through his head, they explain it in the film. He's got cosmic brain damage.
Anyone looking forward to the tv series?
wait did he just give Netflix death note as an example of a good adaptation
He is so wrong there. Lmao
This video perfectly explains why I always say "read the comic AND watch the movie" when people judge my opinions on comic adaptations... it's not an easy feat to condense a 6 volume comic and the movie shows it
Thanks for making this video I started reading the comic and it’s really good.
My experience of the mediums was the game, the movie then the books. I love all of them
*I can't wait for the Netflix anime and I hope it also covers the prequel animation we got a long time ago when Scott and kim were still dating in high school*
They aged down Scott because Michael was 22 irl when they were filming, I believe
Ngl your kind of cute
I like their hair.
Actual content my beloved
Regarding the age changes:
According to the director's commentary, the decision came from the fact that Michael Sera was 21 at the time of recording, so they compromised by making Movie Scott's the middle ground between Sera and Comic Scott.
Also, according to the commentary, a scene after Scott defeats Lucas was cut. In which Movie Scott was meant to stand around as a bunch of coins floats into his chest as Wallace comments: Well, this is awkward.
There's your irony poison!
Interesting!!! I probably should have watched the commentary but also I didn't want it clouding my actual thoughts on how it comes across
One of my favorite comics and game. Thanks for video
Time for a part 2
All this video did was make me realize I miss my comics and I really should reread them. I was like 16 when I finished the series and now over 10 years later, I should go back and see how the story actually resonates with me now.
Late comment but 10 outta 10 video!!!
i remeber i first came in contact with this series through the game's demo back on PS3 and for the longest time thought the game came first before anything else xD
i really liked the books when i read them as a teen, but it's been years since that, i've been meaning to re-read them for a while
as for the movie, i tend to agree with it being a style over substance thing, but i really dig the style. i think since i always have the rest of the franchise in mind, it doesn't afffect me as much seeing these shallower versions of the characters, because i know i'll always have the books (even though it did left me kind of confused the first time i watched it)
"Haha, that's actually pretty funny"
-Captain America
Young Neil is literally the best
Scott Pilgrim rocks! I love the comics, i love the movie, I love the game, but i really want a Scott Pilgrim animated series in the future. That would be epic!
Really good video you have here, Skwisgaar.
LMAO thank you!
Your 2D animated/jpeg talking and reactions were alot funnier and more unique than the usual youtuber greenscreen urself into the video thing tbh
okay fair but can you imagine going BACK to a rantsona after a year of being on camera??? i'd kill myself
I can't help but feel that Knives got fucked over in the film adaptation the most out of all the characters. She was always one of my favourite characters in the comics - sure she may have started off as just a girl who was obsessed with Scott, but the writing gave her so much depth and she felt like a very authentic 17 year old trying to find her place in the world. Her arc of realising how much of a shitty guy Scott was and learning to find her own way was one of the strongest storylines imo. And then in the film they kind of just boil her down to being in love with Scott basically the whole time. It feels like they really missed the point of her character
Question: anybody know a source or page i can look at to understand the world building and mechanics of this story?? Like dream railways, people dropping coins on death, and video game mechanics, vegan police?? Am I overthinking it?? I'm well versed in the story but i dont know if anything was explained.
I found this series in high school, and remember buying all the volumes just to reread them at my leisure. I don't hate the film, but I agree the books and game are the best ways to experience the franchise. I remember seeing another video essay that basically said the characters of Ramona and Scott are terrible people. If you wanted to be like them, you were missing the point of the series. Good video, Ovandal. I'm looking forward to more.
I always attribute the movie slowly swerving away from the plot of the book and later relationship of Scott and Ramona due to the second draft of the movie being submitted in October of 2007 before the 4th book was even published and the night before writers strike. A few ideas from finest hour was used because Bryan had some idea how he wanted to end it at the time. It’s not six books worth of content in a 2 movie, it’s 3 books worth of content and anime filler ending
The only thing you need to explain why the movie completely butchers the comics is pointing out the original ending had Scott end up with Knives
I wish they make some revised mature film for Scott pilgrim
Not just a simple spinoff
While i like the movie, I think a good chunk the fanbase generally glorifies it too much. Ive met too many "fans" that hate the netflix series, despite never reading the comics, mistaking the series for adapting the film...
why is this channel not more popular wtf
obligatory bread makes you fat reference
Can’t wait for the scott pilgrim anime review
16:30 would probably end up like that game called "Alex YiiK"
And now the trailer for the anime adaptation has dropped and pilgrim hype has returned again!
I’m so happy Scott Pilgrim is back in discussion
i am shameless, i will be that one nerd that constantly brings up the books i do not care
Lmao, the pin up tho, I appreciate the inclusion of Wallace.
But I love the movie, it's made by the same guy who made Hot Fuzz
Honestly I don't mind the changes for the film, is it the graphic novel? No... But as an adaptation, I believe it's extremely good.
Black lagoon is still cool 😡
But yeah, i also grew up reading these comics, and i always thought it was weird that the creator did not achieve the same level of mainstream with other stuff he made.
SO. Who is here after learning about the anime announcement
The film (which I like thought it's been a long time since I've seen it) marks an interesting point in Wright's career as a director, I think he's become more emotionally jaded at a steady rate ever since. At World's End is so different from the other two Cornetto Trilogy films in it's tone, then Ant-Man fell through, and Baby Driver is a mean, mean film even if it is very stylish. I haven't seen Last Night in Soho though I have watched the excellent Laura Crone video on it and it seems that the trajectory has continued.
Hello here after the Anime is out and without no spoilers it's different... And it's AMAZING!!!! HAS ITS OWN VOICE while still respecting the essence of Scott Pilgrim. Make me respect the movie even more for also doing it's own thing it's still Scott Pilgrim and amazing in it's own way so i disagree on the movie point but i love the video!
I think you are looking at the movie as giving the same message as the books which it doesn’t. The books very much put Ramona and Scott together because they are just as terrible but can improve eachother when being honest with eachother. While the movie approach is how love is difficult and sometimes you got to properly look at everything around you to know what you goy
There's going to be an animated series now! I hope it does the comics justice.
well, time to reread those books for the first time in a decade
i saw the movie on its own a while ago and i thought it was fine. i suppose i just wasnt paying much attention to it as i usually do with shit that doesnt require my hands. yet to read the comics
No offense or anything since this is my first video on your channel but you look like your going to cast Supernova upon me
idk a scott pilgrim persona like game could be really cool lmao
i really liked the movie as a kid and this video made me read the books, thanks! i loved it, such a good comic, binge read it in a single day
Having never read the original, I fucking loved the movie, but everyone I know who read the original hated it
I think the problem is that is a bad adaption, but a good movie
I really want a video on your opinion of the Netflix show
Another certified banger from Overdoll
Edgar Wright has a special place in my heart, but by god, I had to turn off the movie after 10 minutes. The "gamer" ""humour"" was doing genuine psychic damage to me
i miss the little ms paint guy running around
bring that guy back in he was cool
Man i used to really like scot pilgrim because woah video game reference
I never actually looked at it from like a character standpoint
Nah man, Edgar Wright never misses.
He's Edgar Wright, not Edgar Wrong.
The directing was excellent but the script was, well. you watched the video lol
