Me too, that footage was phenomenal, they didn't hold back to a safe distance, they went in and directly engaged and destroyed their enemy. I thought that they deserved medals for their courage and professionalism, but as with the IDF, they're just happy to rid their country of invading genocidal enemies...
Whenever someone asked me after seeing these videos why is it such a hard fight for Russia, it was much easier to answer - it's not just the bravery and competence, it's also the confidence in their equipment and abilities. Both of these videos showed a BTR4 starting a fight from adventageous position against enemy with superior equipment and/or numbers. It wasn't guaranteed to work and left little room for error...but they went in and engaged the enemy when right then and there they didn't have to.

And let's not forget that those US companies that make a lot of their electronics in China won't be able to make them if China destroys their semiconductor supply. Also Japan has pledged their support for Taiwan in the case that China invades and because the US has a defense treaty with Japan if China fights Japan the US will join in just to defend Japan so in the event of an invasion it will quickly turn into a World War.

They proved very effective in a situation that was very difficult- surrounded, cut off from resupply or repair and in a dense urban battlefield. They were especially effective at outflanking tanks. I foresee demand for them increasing exponentially when the war is over.
Well, they'll get them back along with more Russian abandoned equipment when they retake Mariupol in the spring. I like it too. I wonder how a ukranian BMP would look like. The BTR4 is basicall like a LAV25 to me. Modern design, amphibious and doors on the rear. + ATGMs. I'd say, good vehicle. Does the BTR4MV1 come with thermals? I think so.
One key thing you failed to mention is that rear doors allow soldiers to exit concealed and protected by the vehicle's armor instead of being exposed to fire the moment they step out. An enemy may not even know soldiers are dismounting until they fan out to the sides.
10:22 The cage armor does not actually work like that. Cage armor works by two ways, giving a chance (around 50%) to either crush the fuze to prevent detonation or disrupt the shape of the shaped charge to prevent optimal detonation. The distance can actually make the shaped charge better because most RPGs detonate too close for optimal effect, which is why spaced armor is also not ideal against shaped charges.
BTRs, as most APCs, just hasnt such armor to feel the difference between optimal and not so optimal detonations, but explosion on armor often destroys hull by itself and no care about HEAT element. So it much better to explode NOT on hull anyway.
@@Uncle_Smallett Yeah, 🇬🇧 & 🇺🇸 AFVs have bolt-on armour about 7"< thick to protect the people areas! This afv doesn't! But as to the basic design, I've often wondered about the advisability of making an armoured vehicle but with inflatable tyres?? Can they drive with all of one sides tyres down?

@@Monia_V Yeah, that is the designed purpose of slat armor. The slats are spaced just right in order to be able to crush the ogive and short circuit the piezoelectric fuse on RPG-7 warheads (and other warheads of similar style), thereby literally de-fusing it. Pentium 4, Athlon 64, Playstation 2. The Hightech Electronic Centers of the Soviets was in Kharkiv and Dresden East-Germany.
I guess the original decision to place the engine in the rear of the hull on Russian BTRs dates back to BTR-60. While testing another prototype, they noticed that the vehicle was poorly balanced. Especially, when an unloaded truck jumped off a drop into the water, it tended to nod with the front. That was a huge design flaw since an unloaded truck could not use its water-jet propulsion engine, because it was literally hanging in the air.
That the factory produced the T34 is actually not ironic: back then, it was not Russia fighting the Germans, it was the Sovjet Union, and that included many Ukrainians (and other colonized nations). So Ukrainians in Ukrainian APCs fought Germans (also Russians and others in Ukrainian APCs), now they fight Russians.

Not saying they wouldn't do it now if they could but I'd imagine building a new factory in western Ukraine to build proven models to help resupply the front would be of utmost importance.
Example of how even a vulnerable vehicle can still be useful as long as it has decent armament. The BTR-4 may have high loss rates but it at least has a chance of killing threats to it when a BTR-80's only option would be to run away.
All these youtubers coming out and blowing up over this war in Ukraine is crazy because this is the first time a war has been filmed and had such immediate access to everyone in the world literally almost in real time. The time we are living in is insane
Ukraine has a pretty advanced armoured vehicle industry. India has been using BTRs and they are very effective since the Soviet era. They are amazing engineers and have a promising defense industry.
Regarding 4:20 stuff about poor steel quality. There was a major investigation into this stuff and articles exist about it in Ukrainian. To summarize - this wasn't accidental. The heads of the key defense plants - Malyshev plant, the Kyiv plant and nearly all others were caught in a scandal involving ties to russia. They were basically recruited russian GRU agents, whose job was to dismount ukrainian defense system. During those times (2000-2010) almost every part of the ukrainian defense was unprofitable and has eaten huge amount of money. This only changed after 2014 after the Euromaidan when the Ukroboronprom was created and their managers started restructuring, introducing quality control and selling unneeded assets (there were thousands and thousands of square meters of unused property). But even after 2014 those GRU agents were still pretty much in power and managed to make a lot of problems for the industry. IIRC, some were finally caught and put to prison only in 2022. It's a miracle that under these circumstances the ukrainian industry managed to make such a progress: BTR-4, Stugna, Verba, tank upgrades etc.
BTR 4 reminds me of the Greyhound the US used in WWII. Lacked armor but had a decent cannon that could even kill Tigers/Panthers from behind. They were used heavily in the battle of the bulge. Like the BTR4 the Greyhound was also a wheeled vehicle.
We already had BTR-5 (BTR-8) in development before the war, it was supposed to be modular just like Boxer. Hope we'll see more Ukrainian-made vehicles after this war.

Only Spec Forces and Foreign Assault Unit have actual military armoured troop transports and they are over 80% NATO donated vehicles..mostly old Humvees.
Approximately 200 combat vehicles were produced, some of them were lost, and the Ukrainian army has more than 500,000 soldiers. Therefore, these combat vehicles will not be enough even for 10% of the army

some videos showed not the BTR-4, but the BTR-3. BTR-3 is an intermediate stage, and the solution for "how to cheaply and quickly modernize the old Soviet BTR-70/80". they just put a new combat module there (and if you're lucky - a new engine). how to distinguish them? in BTR-3, the turret is in front, and in BTR-4 - in the middle. the combat module on the yawning is not Paris))) but a sail))
1. BTR-80 has an interchangeable optics with zoom of 1.2x and 4x 2. Pronounced like Parus, not Paris 3. It's more expedient to compare BTR-4 with BTR-82A
The recent videos of BTR-4 in counter offensives show way too fresh looking vehicles. If you watch closely, most of used vehicles have signs of damage or repair. So some small-scale production must be going, at least 1-3 units per month

The BTR-4 seems pretty similar to the LAV-25 in the role it covers, both can protect against 7,62 and 12,7 to the front and have an autocannon to support the dismounted infantry and defeat light armored vehicles.
The LAV-25 is definitely the closest comparable. I'm not sure which has superior armor, but I'd surmise the LAV has that edge whereas the BTR-4 has an edge in firepower.

I thought that they deserved medals for their courage and professionalism, but as with the IDF, they're just happy to rid their country of invading genocidal enemies...
Then you may be pleased to know that the gunner of those videos has been freed in a recent POWs exchange
It wasn't guaranteed to work and left little room for error...but they went in and engaged the enemy when right then and there they didn't have to.
the 30mm gun can blow through a tank's armor with repetitive shots at the same spot. quite impressive..

@@Monia_V Yeah, that is the designed purpose of slat armor. Made for long range... Thats why you call it giant hunk of armor.
The factory that produced the singular T34 prototype is in the US. Oh, you meant _T-34..._ So _not_ the prototype American heavy tank.

News to me
I think by the time this war ends there will be so much new data on it that they might just make a BTR 5 or a 4.5 upgrade package
check btr 4 mv1
We already had BTR-5 (BTR-8) in development before the war, it was supposed to be modular just like Boxer. Hope we'll see more Ukrainian-made vehicles after this war.
I don't think that the BTR4 has thermals. There are night vision devices that instead of green are white. Watch it.
The BTR4MV1 has one I think.
No, it's not ironic. Those plants have been producing armored vehicles to combat fashists regimes. That's what they're doing now. Nothing changed for them 😅
It's not ironic it's poetic justice. They built tanks to fight Nazis and resist fascism and now they're fighting against the fascist dictator and oligarchy of Russia.
I agree. This vehicle barely gets any footage now (maybe because most have been destroyed or in extremely heavy combat). Last time it got mentioned was in May or March. Also the Russian seige of Mariopol.
They are still in use, check Ukrainian twittrr
They're still in use but since everyone makes drone and artillery videos the btr 4 doesn't get shown
I searched that there are67 BTR-4 in ukr army. But there also have 62 in national guard(mainly in azov regiment)
92,93 brigade are the main users of BTR-4. It effective in Kharkiv blitzkrieg
Yeh and that's why UAF are using shcool buses and commercial pick up trucks as their most common vehicles to transport infantry to front line positions.
Only Spec Forces and Foreign Assault Unit have actual military armoured troop transports and they are over 80% NATO donated vehicles..mostly old Humvees.
That means Ukraine has lost around 50% of their BTR-4s then.
Approximately 200 combat vehicles were produced, some of them were lost, and the Ukrainian army has more than 500,000 soldiers. Therefore, these combat vehicles will not be enough even for 10% of the army
That video of the BTR 4 ukraine used on the first few months of their defense--it looks like a juggernaut. Taking out groups of enemies with seeming ease of an arcade shooter.
I live in 10 minutes walking from Malyshev factory. It wasn't destroyed and I saw how btr-4 came from it in september, when I went to hospital near factory.
You do some incredible work. Thanks much.
daaaaamn, that engine got some firepower 🤣
7:57 didn't know the engine was mounted on top of the BTR, quite interesting
This is one of the best videos this channel has put out. Concise, informative and well researched. Good stuff.
some videos showed not the BTR-4, but the BTR-3.
It looks similar to the Italian Freccia, similar hull to the Centuaro but with the turret of the Dardo
Smart upgrades - but Ukrainians were outfighting Russians even with BTR1s. Knowing how, and needing to win matter too.
Nice report, still one wrong thing - RUAF mostly uses BTR-82a model at this war, which has a thermal sights as well, and almost no 80s spotted on Oryx
lol
lying is a medical prescription in Russia
@@kukulroukul4698 mhm? Care to elaborate?
1. BTR-80 has an interchangeable optics with zoom of 1.2x and 4x
2. Pronounced like Parus, not Paris
У нас много фронтовых рембатов,а такие шкаралупы успешно ремонтируются на колене ломом и топором. Плюс мотивация,ремонты идут,много трофеев ремонтируются и используются благо опыт эксплуатации и ремонта огромен.
This is also a vehicle that I very much hope have been built with Rasputitsa (Ukrainian Mud Season) in mind.
They're about to need that!
all vehicle have a problem with mud.
some can do it better, some - worse. but mud is an issue for every.
I imagine they've probably attempted to move production closer to poland. I'm curious how effective its been if they have managed to do so.
unreal factory in Kharkiv
7:56 talks about engine points at autocannon lol
*CALLS JAPAN:* "Hello, Mr. Toyota-sama. The world needs your help once again..."
@@shaider1982 Battle-Hardened around the world...
It's a flat bottom. Any schmuck with a bit of copper and explosives can punch a hole right through the bottom with ease. We learned this lesson almost 20 years ago in Iraq. I did route clearance and learned it the hard way. No V hull is a rolling casket.
Excelent video. Congrats.
Thanks ! 👍
Remember seeing battle footage from Ukrainians btr and thinking wow they have unexpectedly good thermals.
the camera for the turret is a regular ass security camera. real engineerir is what you do when you have the problem but dont have the perfect solution at hand. loved it
7:57 the most beautiful engine I've ever seen
Wait until you discover T-84 Oplot - the most glorious tank of all the possible tanks in all of the possible worlds😜
That they can't seem to produce unfortunately. Seems like a decent set of upgrades though
Yes which there exists only 40 of them of which 30 are in possession of Thailand.
@@fungunsun1 no theirs like 56 and thailand has 49
@@fungunsun1 pretty sure Ukraine has less than 10
Привет из Украины.
У Украины стоял выбор, один так Оплот или модернизировать 20 штук, Т72 -Т80-Т64 Булат. Война и нужно много танков.
7:57 That's one scary looking engine!
More engines should come with an autocannon 😤
Is it just me or would a more thoroughly NATO-fied version of this vehicle, or something on a different platform but with the same capabilities be perfect for the USMCs new mission profile?
Great power to weight ratio
Nimble
Amphibious and can fire while approaching shore
Modularity allows for a thinner logistics tail, crucial for stand-in forces in the Pacific, as a wide variety of specialist vehicles will share most of their spare parts with the IFVs
Great weapon mix in the turret
30mm autocannons make jarheads happy.
I´m not saying just straight up adopt them...but IMO the USMC needs a wheeled vehicle more or less like this.
At minimum i can see the turret being slapped onto nato hulls.
The ACV could be similar with a larger remote weapons system added (25 or 30mm), and the marines still have a few old LAV25s.
I will say I think the Corps definitely needs much more mobile fire support than it currently has
@@cahsahhhhhhhn The LAV-25 is of course on it's way out, and being so old I´m not going to rag on per se, it but it offers much less protection than a BTR-4 style vehicle while still having a worse power to weight ratio. It needs to be phased out for a reason.
The ACV program has a lot riding on it IMO and the DoD needs to get this program right, and I hope that they are watching and drawing lessons from Ukraine.
If you knew what it took to field the Bradlee....
BTR-4EN is a version supplied to Nigeria. A total of 10 units were delivered by 2016.
Great report as always! This is a better presentation of what's going on then the majority of the media.
Most helpful and informative. Thanks for digging up these stuff.
Very interesting video Cappy, excellent work sir. You should consider making more videos like this, showcasing Ukraine’s indigenous capacity to build and their military industrial complex.
🍻
Reminds me a lot of the Stryker Dragoon in concept (lighter weight wheeled APC given 30mm turret to turn into an IFV), especially with the modularity concept mentioned in the beginning. Would be interesting to see a direct comparison between the two
17:39: That tweet is plain wrong. T-80 were produced in **OMSK** until about 2001, where the current upgrade is taking place (to the T-80 BVM standard. Kharkiv plant produced T-64 and is still upgrading them - which is the reason Ukraine still operates and sells the tank that went out of production almost 35 years ago.
The production on this vid is legit some of your best 🙌🙌🙌
The BTR-4 have for sure a high price to hold the Russians. But this does not mean the design is bad but that it is used very intensive. It has for sure its limit but in the whole it seems to be a very well system with in the limits of relative light and wheeled APC .
Design itself was heavily inspired by MT-LB, according to rumors Also, chassis isn't the best and not as reliable as it should be, crew ergonomics also questionable. Overall, it's a product of it's time, which is mid 00s. Sad that due to inner shenanigans we weren't able to produce them more, especially last versions where a lot of things were fixed/ added (like they finally added APU e.t.c.).
