You’ve no idea how much of a curve ball this was to Depeche Mode fans when it came out. The lead single from their number one (on both sides of the Atlantic) album Songs Of Faith And Devotion. It sounded like nothing they’d ever done before. Bigger and louder, and of course Dave Gahan with long hair. The whole thing was electrifying. Compare this with the smooth electronic subtlety of the previous album, Violator. Everything that had gone into the making of this album, and everything that went into the massive world tour that followed, blew the band apart only for them to come back to life as a three piece and continue to this day (with the tragic passing of Andy Fletcher this year).

Yeah it was an initial "wut?" when I got the 7" single, the two 12" and two CD-singles at home. It's a great song though and the remixes delivered (as usual). :)

Depeche Mode was my bread and butter band growing up. Love them! They have so many different sounds. This was their grunge album and one of the very few albums that I prefer the live version to the studio one. Some other great songs (there are so many) to try: "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth", "People are People" (old school). Another from this album you may feel is even more badass than this song would be "Rush", but listen to the live version. The opening drums will blow you away! (Or even "Barrel of a gun" on their Ultra album would blow you away too. These guys have a lot of hits and many hidden gems!). Cheers!

The lead singer David Gahan is very captivating on stage. You’re right he definitely has a swag of his own.

This is a very interesting choice for a first time listen to this band. They are mainly recognized as a synth band. Between 1981 and 1990 they released singles like Just can't get enough (1981), People are people (1984), Strangelove (1987) or Enjoy the silence and Personal Jesus (1990) to name a few. Let's not forget my all time favourite - Policy of truth (1990).
This one came in like a wrecking ball to most of the fans. Both their look and the sound were very 180 degrees to what we were used to for more than 10 years.

I Feel You was the first track on the Songs Of Faith And Devotion album, which was significantly different than anything DM had previously delivered. It still remains one of my favourite DM songs. You have to give the track Higher Love a listen to, which is what DM opened the Devotional Tour concerts with back in 1993.

Tom Green. That was funny! They started as one of the first electronic (synthesizer) based bands, including the drums. Guitar was introduced, and a drummer over time. "Never Let Me Down Again," "Enjoy the Silence," or "It's No Good," are good songs.

🔥 they had so many faces in each album. See violator - songs of faith ( in your room devotional live is a masterpiece btw) then playing the angel that nasty distortion synthetic sound . If you grew up listening to vinyl, the sound in the beginning of the song is known to you. It’s a needle being slowly ripped across a a 7 or 12 inch record.
“Back in my day” it was known as an attention getter.
It was a “mic drop” before there were mic drops. (So you understand why it was there).
Also, with this album, the band was saying all that 7 inch (record size) dance shit is over (they were considered a “new wave” dance band).
This record rip at the beginning was essentially a “welcome to the new Depeche Mode” moment.

This lead singer was going through a lot of turmoil at this time in his life. He's actually trying to be different than his true self. He was trying to fit into the 1990s grunge scene. He got mixed up with a dangerous woman, started shooting heroin, and almost died before he went to rehab.

This song was definitely a departure from them (though their sound constantly evolved/still does), so it was an interesting first choice. I loved your observation that you thought it was strange you hadn't heard this song before, since that's pretty much the strange paradox of Depeche Mode -- underappreciated, underrated, yet they have and continue to sell out stadiums worldwide an were inducted to the R&R Hall of Fame two years ago. And swag is the word for Dave Gahan.
Can't wait to see what you check out next. I would love to see Behind the Wheel, Stripped, or In Your Room, though everyone seems to start with Enjoy the Silence or People are People (with good reason).

Man, the glasses were "necessary". Dave Gaham, the lead singer was immerse in a world of drugs since mid eighties and this song is from 92 (I think so). He kept on with drugs a few years more wich led him to see Miss Death's eyes very close for a couple of times. He's absolutely clean since then. Martin's (the blond one) problems were around alcohol, but he is doing fine now too.
    Salud hermano!

You jumped into DM at an interesting stage... this was a huge album in 1993, but it was so vastly different than anything they'd ever done before (yet still has the trademark DM sound in some odd way). They formed in 1980 and continue to this day. You should either go all the way to the beginning (1981 - Just Can't Get Enough) or, as most reactors do, keep hitting the peak years 1987-1993 and do Strangelove, Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, Walking In My Shoes.

Man, this is a rabbit hole you just got get on ASAP. They are hugely influential and important to how popular music developed in the 80s and early 90s. And, there are so many great, iconic songs from them. They brought the darker hues, the salt, to an otherwise largely pastel coloured, sugar-saturated decade.
By the early 90s, Dave Gahan, the vocalist, had moved to LA and befriended the local alternative rock scene - which explains his growing out his hair and his new extra-everything swag. Sadly this album, 1992’s Songs Of Faith And Devotion, would be the last with musical genius Alan Wilder in the band, (drumming in this video). But what an album to go out on - a high point of the 90s for sure. And it marks their artistic and commercial peak. But by then they had a whole decade worth of iconic, groundbreaking and highly influential albums under their belt.
The video was - as always - directed by legendary photographer Anton Corbijn, who has shot practically everyone, and even directed a couple of movies. But he is particularly associated with Depeche Mode, as he changed their whole visual style from an early point in their career. ”He made us look cool”, as Dave likes to say.
There are too many songs to choose from, but if you want to dip further into this album you have In Your Room, Walking In My Shoes, Condemnation. Next up should be the immediate predecessor to this album, and widely considered their perfect one: Violator (1990). Perhaps start with Personal Jesus, the first single, and go from there. After that, you’re on your own. But expect to stay in this rabbit hole for a while.

If black belts were handed out to producers/writers, Depeche would be 8th Degree Grand Masters. They can make songs like this that are heavily layered without any of the layers conflicting with others. They can also make more simplistic songs like "Waiting for the Night to Fall" or "Only When I Lose Myself" but not compromise any of the gravity of the song.

This is an old song within a small evolution of the music.... That has aged very well.
There was a transition in the eighties from the big hair whiny boyfriend rock to the grunge scene. There was a style for about two years where rock rocked again before descending into the grunge angst. Smashing pumpkins was another band during this short window of music style change.
