  • Willie Hugh Nelson was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas. He and his sister Bobbie were raised by their grandparents after their parents separated and left them behind. His grandparents, who were music teachers, nurtured his love for music from an early age. Willie’s grandfather gave him a guitar when he was six years old, and he began writing his first songs soon after. By the time he was nine, he was performing locally with a band called Bohemian Polka.
Music was a constant in Willie’s life, and his early exposure to a variety of genres, including gospel, country, and jazz, laid the foundation for his eclectic style. After high school, Nelson joined the Air Force but was discharged due to back problems. He then attended Baylor University for a short period but dropped out to pursue a career in music.
Nelson's journey to fame was neither quick nor easy. He spent much of the 1950s working as a DJ at various radio stations in Texas while performing in honky-tonks at night. His early recordings did not gain much traction, but he continued to write and perform tirelessly. In 1960, Nelson moved to Nashville, the heart of country music, hoping to find greater opportunities.
