So a Human, an Elf, a Kalashtar, a Warforged, an Autognome, and a Thri-Kreen walk into a tavern. The human says to the others "Do any of you have any dreams?", and the others simultaneously reply "No...".
This is an underrated comment and it deserves more likes.
This is great lol
Elves get dreams that are real
@@Inactive_Account29283 They're more so meditation exercises.
Thri kreen can sleep though, it more like they have the ability to choose unlike others.
Ah yes, the Thri-Kreen. The first playable source for my rule of “never go hand to hand against someone with more hands than you.” (Obviously the Marilith isn’t playable.)
General Kenobi
@@corpsemasterB312 Hello there.
Marilith isn't playable? What's stopping you?
@@xychoticbreak5198 Well, I have done some stuff in high level 3.5 crack games...
Yet
"Well, we already have ONE insect race, so why don't we just use that one. Now that I'm thinking of it, we can use that slot for another elf! Genius!"
Playable Xixchil from the original spelljammer hearing this explaining asking if they are a joke to Jeremy crawford.
Still waiting for the grasshopper people...
@@nkyfongjust reskin Thri-Kreen by replacing extra arms with a feature saying “Your STR score is tripled for calculating your jump distance, and you are resistant to fall damage.”
You were taking so long to release the video about these guys that I was actually getting afraid the race wouldn't be available anymore lol
Same!!!
Same!
I'm so glad that they are being officially added to 5e, I have an insectile race in my D&D settings that is like an amalgate of various insectile humanoids, for now I'm just calling them the Kreen, with the subraces being based on the various types of insect, one of which will be the sort of ant/mantis-like Thri-Kreen. And for my first full campaign one of my players wants to in fact be a Thri-Kreen, so having the official stats to work from will help immensely with furthering the design of the base and the subrace.
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the excellent Thri Kreen NPC and the pair of adventures involving them in 2e Spelljammer in the Skulls and Crossbows book! It cemented my love of the Thri Kreen and was one of the most successful official Spelljammer adventures I ran back in the day. I’m so glad they are once more a playable people in the new edition!
I hope that if the new Spelljammer set doesn’t have the Thri Kreen Leaf Ships and Thorn Ships and info on the past fallen Thri Kreen Empire that they may get covered in an expansion. Particularly as I want miniatures of them in the new Ship Scale Line.
Because there’s so much cool stuff for Spelljammer I’m sure you can do a follow up set. People will want rules for playing Dohwar too, there’s so many many iconic ships I’m sure some classics didn’t make the cut for this set.
I’m hyped for my preorder to come in, and already getting players hyped up too, desperately waiting for the miniature releases to come and I’m already wanting more 😁
Lots of Ender's Game vibes coming from this. Looking forwards to playing a Formic
Edit: I have now learned that Formians are a thing, and a much better fit for the concept.
Please find a way to bring back Athas. Glad to see one of their iconic races resurrected in Spelljammer
Agreed. Athas was my gateway to D&D and I'd really like it brought up to 5e.
Nothing quite like one's first setting.
I was waiting for this video to come out!
I ADORE Thri-Kreen! Super excited you're bringing them back as playable!
But worth noting, they were based on the Green Martians in Edgar Rice Burroughs "Barsoom" novels -- coupled with certain things encountered in Jack Vance's Dying Earth tales...
Thri-Kreen have been around in the game since 1982. In every iteration that this race was presented it was tweaked. hopefully it gets its greater abilities at higher levels.
A dex based eldritch knight with shadow blade, shield, off hand weapon and free hand migh be wonderful!
A sword and board ranger can finally technically cast Absorb Elements! Same with 2wf.
Now I want to see an Acquisitions Inc style SpellJammer campaign run by Chris Perkins
The Complete Spacefarers Handbook had the Xixchil, which were basically the Thri-Kreen for Spelljammer who loved body alterations and piercings.
No, the vrusk analog was the rastipede. Same look (centaur bug).
@@manyslayer5889 My point being is that they could have easily said that they are including Thri-Kreen because they are similar to the Xixchil (very mantis like beings) instead of trying to tie them to the Rastipede and by extension the Vrusk.
Finally I can make my dark sun char in 5e officially! :D
Well you mules(golaiths are basically half giant's) mybe half orcs but whit some hombrew
one of these days we'll get an official update for Dark Sun, gotta keep the faith (even if the gods are long gone)
@@costanzafaust yeah, any moment now! ;-)
I always pronounced it as 'Three-Kreen... but Thry makes more sense.
Same, I don't know why but both Three made perfect sense until I heard Thry and now that makes sense too
I remember playing these in 3.5 at high level. It was pretty great
I had a player that ran a high level monk with one. His favorite thing was to leap into battle from like 100 yards away and ninja kick a guy in the process lol
I'm just thinking General Grievous as a Thri-kreen XD
This is the one I was waiting for.
I’d love to play a Thri-Kreen Earth Genasi. Just an idea, but it would be really sweet if D&D released a small guide on unique Genasi hybrids, like some ways in which a Genasi could be born from different races and alter their stats/abilities to some small degree. Like maybe an Earth Genasi Thri-Kreen would have a less developed less functional second set of arms and lose or weaken its telepathy, but gain proficiency in camouflage and a small bonus in the defensive ability of its carapace.
Also, I hope this means the Sahuagin are incoming. The locathah are adorable but I would love to see more monstrous beast races from the sea.
I'm no longer in the target audience here, but man... I'm glad to see Thri-Kreen getting the love _outside_ of Dark Sun. And I'm really hoping that the shiny new Spelljammer version has some subraces... like the jek, and toksa... and the _xixchil._
I just was talking with my gaming friends trying to explain these guys.
Chris Perkins said they were from 1st ed. They are in fact first released in 1991 Dark Sun (2ng ed).
I knew that they were dropping this when I saw them update Spelljammer Academy.
Thri Kreen was my first player character! Good to see them again after so long
You have me @ Thri-Kreen and practically guarantees my getting/playing/running Spelljammer!!
I like that glaive that they use. I want to play a thri-kreen some day.
Just keep teasing Dark Sun... 😭
If Spelljammer sells well I’m sure Dark Sun and Planescape will follow.
And then I hope maybe they’ll go as far as a new Council of Wyrms!
Or birthright or ghostwalk
@@baynemacgregor8441 the new UA looks like planescape
I've played a Vrusk Scientist in Star Frontiers.
AND
Am now playing a Thri-Kreen Paladin in D&D
I am SO hyped for Thri-Kreen. I really hope this might even be a sign we're getting Dark Suns in 5e at some point! (Fingers crossed)
I love telepathy so much, i like to make it produce the voice of the listener on his own head but is way too alien. Like "why am i thinking those thing?" and than his own voice says in his mind "wait, it's me, the fellow humanoid in front of you". XD
Dark Sun needs to make a comeback! Being a defiler was awsome
I have just created one of these guys for my new campaign. He is basically gilgamesh searching for the 4 greatest swords in existamce
Me before Spelljammer: I really want to play a Giff gunslinger paladin oath of the motherland
WotC: Anyway here's Autognomes
Me: Omg I want an autognome sorcerer
WotC: So here are the Plasmoids
Me: Omg I want a plasmoid gunslinger paladin
WotC: So we've also got Thri-Kreen
Me: Omg I want a Thri-Kreen cobalt soul monk
*help*
Oath of the motherland??
So as a monstrocity these things are immune to Hold Person?
That's a good question...I think they would need Hold Monster...so would Plasmoids in fact from the reading of the spell.
Yes, because they are not the humanoid creature type. Centaurs, Satyrs, Fairies, and Changeling are Fey creature type so having a PC immune to spells that target humanoids isn't new or game breaking
Yes, there are already a number of races in the game that aren't of the Humanoid type and therefore immune to things that only affect Humanoids like Charm/Hold Person. Changelings and Hexbloods are Fey for instance. Warforged probably should be Constructs but they were introduces in books before they started labelling each race with their creature type. And probably would be far more harmful than good since then they couldn't be healed by healing magics.
If they reprinted the warforged now, they could give them the living construct thing like they did with the autognomes.
And unlike the Fey playable races, also immune to hold person, they aren't warded away by Protection from Evil and Good or turned by Ancients or Watchers Paladins, or Arcana Clerics.
Talking about sapient space mantids in Spelljammer and not a word about the Xixchil? Xixchil were already basically What Thri-Kreen Are In Spelljammer.
These guys sound super strong and super cool.
Still looking for the artwork that went along with "We Thri-Kreen of Orient are . . ." I think it was a Christmas Dragon issue.
The Thri-kreen in the monster manual always intrigued me, so having them playable is cool
The 3.0 Thri-Kreen were insane. One of my players had a Thri-Kreen monk ninja kick a guy from like 200 yards away
here before the space was added between the and Thri
Actually I'm more interested in their skeletons, they obviously have an Exoskeleton, But I wonder if it is paired with a partial endo-skeleton for additional support?
In my Eberron, I came up with a sign language as a lingua franca or trade language in Xen'drik. Consent is required to establish a telepathic link. My players liked the concept of a sign language trade language.
That's such an awesome idea!
I love Thru-Krenn but I would see more inectoid playable race like beetle (berserker or brawler), bee/wasps (knights or swordsman), and moth (Idk what class a moth would be good at but they are my favorite)
Dark Sun was my first introduction to the Thri-Kreen
An asspect that you can add to this is that the Thri language must be pretty complicated. Theres telepathy, which would make things smoother, but the non-verbal (non-telepathic) communication eould be very rich. They can still speak, make even more gestures, and change color. Its neat to think about how you could run with that into a sort of pseudo-hivemind.
I designed a Thri-Kreen character a couple years ago I didn't use, this is a nice addition to the game.
I'm so unbelievably stoked for Thri-Kreen to return. Please give us Dark Sun as well. It'd give you a chance to explore Psionics for 5e and open up a lot of possibilities.
Now I can add them officially to EBERRON
Thri-Kreen should have a few sub-races such as Soldier, Worker, Scout, and Noble just like how all ants in a colony are of that colony there are different types of ants for different purposes. While all Thri-Kreen can be what ever class they want, like any race, these sub-races are just to be specialists within their colony.
Soldiers are Orc or Goliath sized getting a bonus to strength, within a colony they do tend to be guards and use primarily melee weapons.
Workers are Human sized getting a bonus to intelligence, these make up the majority of a Thri-Kreen colony and do the majority of the work within the colony.
Scouts are Halfling sized and get a bonus to their Wisdom, they have bigger eyes than others of their kind which can give them a cuter appearance but it's mainly so they can see better. They tend to be shy and skittish not wanting to get into troubleif they can help it.
Noble are Elf sized and get a bonus to Charisma, they are the rarest type of Thri-Kreen with colonies tending to have at least one working as the leader of their colony while other's are in charge of organizing smaller groups of Thri-Kreen within the colony, Noble Thri-Kreen have a 1 in 1,000 chance of being born if conditions are right and at least one of their parents is a Noble as well. Only reason you'd see a Noble outside a colony is that they are looking to establish a new colony or are on a diplomatic mission for their colony and they are normally joined by a number of other Thri-Kreen from their mother colony. I'd also give them an upgrade to their Telepathic ability so they can speak to a wide area around them.
Thri-kreen monk gonna be a popular choice.
Made preorder and already have some ideas on quest what will set players on sails
Thank you for spelljammer, really love it
My firend told me about these guys years ago, always wanted to play one, ill have to buy the book.
Oh missed this video, glad our good good buggos are back. They were really fun in Dark Sun, as were the half-dwarves; the inspired a lot of mixed species homebrew between me and folks I know who got curious about it. Quaterlings and playing with other types of half-elves, half-orc, and the idea of half-human being more a thing. But then again, my friends and I are all mixed race and mixed culture kids ourselves, so. :p
*Does a quick Google* Son of a gun, they were in Forgotten Realms first!
I appreciate the credit given to Star Frontiers. My firends and I played Red and Blue Box until one of us showed up with the Star Frontiers box ... it was great. Then came Gamma World ..................
still wish you could dual wield bows with them
I hope we get Thri-Kreen miniatures. Maybe some heroes or a warband!
Mee to, been painting thw two there is meanwhile. I'm glad for the purple kreen in the art as I made mine blue.
I adore Thri-Kreen so much!
My need to run an FTL or Enderverse campaign is growing!
Actually had two ideas in mind which one of involves both a Warforged Monk(Teacher) & Thri-Kreen Monk(student).
Yes! Yes! Yes! Right now I am actually playing as a homebrew thri-kreen fighter named Chirps uet everyone calls him Grasshopper
Hey if the Thri-kreen can't speak, how does that work with verbal components of spells? Also, what about effects that require the target to hear and understand you?
Obviously, their telepathy takes over for verbal. A Frumious Bandersnatch wizard would be interesting, as a 1000 yard long worm without hands or voice could be hard to figure out.
They speak the thri kreen language (clicks and chirps), so that's how they do verbal components. Nothing saying it can't be done in other languages
Dual wielder feat sais: "You gain a +1 bonus to AC while you are wielding a separate melee weapon in each hand." does that mean a Thri-kreen must wield 4 weapons?
Now this is a funny RAW interaction. 😆
Don't think its RAI tho
@@Rawilow I hope it's only 2 weapons, that way I can get the +1 bonus and the +2 bonus for carrying a shield.
well "dual" means two, I'd say RAI they just need 2 weapons, but if they also equip a shield I would not stack the CA bonus, and only apply the +2 from the shield.
"Telepathically Communicate with... "
Can the team please clarify if the communication is 2 way as per the Monster Telepathy described in the basic rules.
And confirm the target cannot identify where the communication is coming from.
And if the comminication is possible if the TK or target is behind ful cover.
Thanks...
Im cool with this, but it's weird that the reason is because you wanted spelljammer to have an insect playable race since spelljammer had Xixchil as a playable insect race.
Will there be stuff for the special Thri-Kreen weapons, the Gythka and the Chatkcha?
YYYYEAH MY BOYS ARE BACK IN THA GAME, YA'LL!
I can picture setting up a TK spellcaster who uses the smaller arms for wands, somatic components, etc. The larger arms could each have a shield/defensive items.
It doesn't say the small arms can be used to manipulate magic items.
@@videogollumer doesn't say they can't.
@@feralart Okay, I don't even know WHY I said that; not all Spellcasting Focuses are Magic Items. Still, I'd like to point out that a character cannot benefit from more than one Shield at a time. THAT is something I know for certain.
@@videogollumer that's why I included the possibility of other defensive options.
@@feralart What other defense options ARE there that require a hand besides a shield?!
I take back everything bad I ever said about Spelljammer. I was just salty they didn't revive Planescape. I'm getting Thri-Kreen for my birthday.
WOOOH exoskeletons!
Thanks.
Take the dual wielder feat, Dual wield 2 Longswords with your main arms and then two short swords with your other arms
You would still only get one bonus-action attack.
@@Millstone1985 true, but it'd be cool
Funny, I was thinking similarly in regards to utilizing dual wielded with thri kreen
Imagine sword fighting a guy with four arms.
It's about time! I came up with the concept of a Thri-Kreen bard, and was wondering, since they can't speak, therefore they can't sing, could my bard play a lute or lyre with one set of arms, and drum/tambourine with the second set?
It's not that Thri-kreen cant' speak, it's that their mouth structure doesn't work for speaking languages of flesh-mouths. They don't have the tongue and lips structure that most humanoids have, so they can't really speak their language the way those races can't speak the Thri-Kreen language. So they could sing in their own language, and possibly back that up with their telepathy so other races could understand it.
I haven't seen the rules for them yet in 5e, but given that they can use both pairs of arms to wield weapons, I image they could train to play two different instruments at the same time as well.
Also you could totally play a Kricketune.
So no shout out to the races coming directly out of the 1980s star frontiers game?
Thri-kreen are also carnivores. Elf flesh is a delicacy to them. So don’t mind the occasional drooling they might do in elven presence.
Kudos on the Star Frontiers game.
Been playing it since the 80's
I’m getting major Fallen from Destiny vibes from these guys. It’s a space-faring insectoid race.
Maybe this is just me and my love of martial arts but im going to do a praying mantis monk
From now on, my PC will always be Thri-kreen.
i always played one of these or a gith yankee knight in my friend’s games. waaaay back in the day
🇺🇸🤘😎
So almost all pictures of Thri-kreen show them with a pole-arm in their main arms, and a smaller weapon in their smaller arms. Now I get to explain to my players RAW this is impossible, and they can never do this.
If you want to dual wield, both weapons have to be light.
If you take the Dual Wielder feat to use non-light weapons, they still have to be one-handed.
Best I can offer is to wield a spear two-handed, and a short sword, but they still need the feat for that, so they would be better off with a war-hammer and short sword, but a non-Thri-Kreen could one-hand two warhammers and have the same damage profile. The dual wielder feat does for a Thri-Kreen what the gunner feat does for a Giff. Almost nothing.
Don't know if you read comments, but would a Thri-Kreen hailing from Maztica be a common background?
Four Weapon Fighting Feat when?
They are humanoid preying mantis. I think they were in The Eye of Beholder PC game.
{:o:O:}
Can use as a template of sorts to home brew any variety of insectoid species. 👍
So I've been thinking about grappling. If I got things correct I can grapple and drag up to 4 creatures with a Thri-Kreen. Or grapple a creature and hit it with a two handed weapon.
Maybe? Depends on the final wording of the extra arms.
It's easy to imagine there will be limitations, like with a Loxodon's trunk.
@@egrettacaerulea Loxodon's can grapple with their trunk so i'm not worried about the Thri-keen extra arms.
Can a thri-kreen use two-weapon fighting with a weapon in a primary hand and another weapon in a secondary hand AND hold a shield in the other primary hand?
Yes, they can
Absolutely. Then they can hold an arcane focus in their last secondary hand if you want to be prepared for literally any situation.
It's a great ability. Especially if you run two handed weapons but also like duel wielding
Wait, it's pronounced "Fry-kreen", not "Three-kreen"???
Mind blown but very excited to play these folks again. My very first D&D character was a Thri-kreen. I showed up to a game thinking I was going to play an elf or a gnome or something, but what I got was "this is Dark Sun, have a premade giant ant to play." Never looked back! :D
No, it's actually pronounced "Three-Kreen", not "Thry-Kreen".
{:o:O:}
true elves dont have to sleep, but they do have to trance
telepathy should only work with those who put a larva in their ear. Or get a egg shaped pill to swallow. Don't chew just swallow.
Elves are not sleepless. They have to sleep for 4 hours.
Also ants do sleep multiple times during the day (only for a few minutes at a time) if you ever see an ant just standing there It is probably taking a quick nap.
Anyway. I would have revised thri-kreen to rest 4 hours like the elf.
Well, elves only have to meditate for 4 hours, not sleep. They remain conscious during the entire rest
DARKSUN! Bring it back!
Can I get this whole interview instead of 3-8 minutes segments?
BRING THE VRUSK TO D&D! I would love to see that! Thri-Kreen are cool, certainly, but the Vrusk are still different enough that it would be cool to have more than one insectoid race...whether they were playable or not, it would be great to have them in the game, since Star Frontiers doesn't look to be making a comeback. (Thus: why not also Spelljammer?)
D&D's equivalent to the Vrusk is the Rastipedes.
So what you're saying is that a Thri-Kreen Hunter/Gloom Stalker Ranger is technically a Predator, hunting Elves for skulls...
Skulls are just a bonus on top of that lean, delicious meat!
Thri-kreen exist to cull the rampaging hordes of Elves :)
@@SilentSooYun Now we know what happened to the Elven Imperial Fleet. XD
While I like the channel. This video didn't really tell me who the Thri-Kreen are. I know WoTC is hesitant to mention Dark Sun.
Though to be honest I don't know why. DS isn't really a controversial setting. Most groups play heroes, or the light in the dark.
Anyway, there are other videos that go into far more detail about this species. Their culture and religions. They are a very interesting people.
Dark sun coming?????
Looks like Elf meat's back on the menu!
