NEW MMO Corepunk: First Impressions

  • Corepunk is an MMO I've been excited about and I got to test it first hand for the first time with their recent Alpha 2 test.
    I came into the test hoping to find at least the bones of a game that would be a lot of fun, but some design decisions that are questionable at best (ridiculously slow combat that feels basic, no passive regen, over-reliance on consumables, AI voice acting...etc.)
    Have firmly dropped Corepunk off of my listed of anticipated MMOs unless they announce some major changes.

    Hey, my previous comment did not apear here maybe due to link being in it :V So I just want to make some points:
    1) slow start is design choice and wont be changed. The idea is that you would really feel the progress and also get to know the world and the game. You can read it in latest dev post;
    2) no passive regen - I don't have anything against it, it gives this "you need to prepare before you go" vibe, and also makes you think if you want to kill enemies in the camp or not. Also thanks to this consumables have more value than in other MMOs, making consumable craft a viable way of earning gold (players can craft better consumables than ones sold at shops etc);
    3) Ai Voiceover - yes it is there. The devs said that they would like full voiceover but don't have resources right now to implement it;
    4) Boring quests - yes they are simple and revolve mainly on gathering, but this is only beginning of the gamethey actually make a good job of introducing you to various types of crafting and gathering. Also they make you get quite few lvs fast if you explore, talk to NPCs and complete quest thrown in your way. That said I think that they need a little bit more polish on early game and quests, the devs admitted it themselves in latest communication;
    5) long cooldowns - yes that is true but the game is also PVP oriented and you can get cooldown reduction on items. I dunno if lower cooldowns would be better or not, I chose to trust the devs on this one;
    6) Mob killing in party is very profitable once you party at higher level zones (they are open PVP zones at the same time) so yes, you would have a mix of questing, gathering, pvp, pve in the ideal scenario. Also, later the mobs get more skills, there are more build choices, even environment you can use for your adventage in combat.
    I myself enjoyed Corepunk and I want it to have healthy community so I would just like to tell audience that Corepunk is unique, you may want to read about the game and it's mechanics yourself and decide if this is something that is for you :) Cheers!

    HI :)
    Sorry for my english, i from russia and my experience so bad in egnlish.
    I think you're wrong, the corepunk does not implement a linear quest system - I reached level 8 completed only 3 quests at the very beginning - I got everything else for exploring the world (craft, killing monsters, etc.)
    Killing monsters after level 8 brings experience just as if you were doing quests (maybe even more). I played alone on this test, but I am absolutely delighted that in a game whose team does not have a huge budget, they created such a well-developed world.

      Sadly the problems of this game are not numbers; are the game design choices, and that is hard to change, since the devs don't seem to list the complaints very much.

    I tried the alpha 2 test, it was rough. I was super excited about this game. I get what they are trying to do, make a game where you need to explore and find things, no hand holding, slower game flow ect.. However in order for that to actually work, they have to fix adjust some of the game loop. To start the questing is so vague to the point where you are aimlessly wondering around. to promote exploration in questing you need to give hints of landmarks, areas to have a clue of what to look for but this game has the bare minimum information that becomes painful and not at all enjoyable, and finding a quest doesnt feel rewarding. it feels like its about fucking time i found it. Again i want to like this game, you dont have to have pointers in the map telling you where to go, just give clues to help direct the player. I walked around for 2 days trying to find one quest, sure i could move on but i was testing the questing...not great. I played as a medic, again it was rough, damage was low and if i pulled more than one creature (they are mostly in packs so solo pulls are hard for the most part) it was tough, not because of mechanics but it was because i didnt have enough abilities to do damage before dying. This is not fun, if i survived the fight by the time i killed one creature close to my level or at my level i had to spend one of my camps/or multiple food items to get my health back. theres no health generation to speak of. I get the idea of preparing your equipment and food before going out to the wilds to quest/grind. If they want to have a combat that is going to be dificult you need to have a way to make the combat loop be more enjoyable/rewarding since combat is the main activity that you will do in the game. Passive Health generation out of combat would make the grinding more enjoyable. I didnt enjoy the low level experience at all, and i just stopped at level 10 or 13 i dont remember. This needs to change if this game will be successful. There are going to be a handful of people that like it to be this punishing, but that will not be enogh for this game to be a success. you need to grab as many people in the start of the game, make the start fun, fun to learn the game world, how the combat works, crafting, exploring show them a rewarding game loop (using all you food items to kill 2 mobs is not rewarding). then after you have most of the tools start ramping out the dificulty. I HAD HIGH HOPES for this game but after trying it, i dont anymore. its sad because the game aesthetics are soo good and unique. I hope they change some of their design desitions but most likely they wont. Best of luck to them.

    An easy fix to early level game play is to reduce the cooldown of skills on the skill bar for each skill not slotted. So if you only have one skill on bar, then cooldown reduced up to 60%. Same goes for health regen. Increase health regen for each group member missing from the group. This way when you start the game with no gear, no friends, and no skills, you dont feel handicapped.

    But I'm not saying that everything is perfect, a few things still need fine-tuning. That's what the alpha was intended for.
    The MMO aspect of forming a group with other players, trading and joining a guild is held in high regard in Corepunk.

      One of the things that I noted and feel strongly about is ny review probably would have been better if grouping had worked. We tried several times but had very limited time together due to the game splitting us apart into different shards and being unable to return. That really highlighted the issues I have without providing a base line passive regen.

    too many games are trying to slow down the hardcore grinding players who get to cap level in 3 days. So they pull these kinds of stunts to lengthen out their content hoping to keep the interest of the hardcore. The issue is people who cant play 8 hours a day hate this. I liked Embers Adrift ok but it leveled so slowly for me and I had to drop it in the mid 20s because it took so long. And you suck at those levels because you have next to no abilities.

  • @PHX214
    @PHX214 Місяць тому +2

    Corepunk isnt your normal grindfest it seems; people liked classic WOW because you just cant go in there and one shot stuff. Problem is the devs need to adjust the swing timer and adjust the Level 1-5 which are are your most important levels of any game, the game can win and lose players in that time, they have to hit a home run with those levels - adjust xp across the board. I know the fog of war they want to do like LoL, but just get rid of it, have the quests show where they are. Albion Online vibes, if played that its about the same grind, but a bit faster.

    • @yahootube90
      @yahootube90 Місяць тому +1

      tbh they won me. Im not into MMOs till i played New World. I playtasted Corepunk and i was thrilled (i also play league so i applied some core concepts in my play through). I need to address somethings here. First walkthrough is a bit painfull, because of how quests don't scream at you what you should do (PLEASE READ THE SPEECH BUBLES) in 1 day i got from lvl 1-10 83% with quests. Most of them are very chill to complete. The ones where you need to find pipes and a bottle of whiskey are a pain (if you don't have someone to guide you). But everything else made my day with this game. I hope RedBeard don't drop the game.
      Beside the erros and the broken instance system (i mean bugs) this game really got my attetion and I really want to see it grow.
      The biggest downside was the craft system's RNG not following the gather RNG. Even with 100% construction i still got a ton of commun implants. I crafted 100 in on go (dupped the materials to make them) and I only crafted 15-20 epic/uncommun ones. Lets wait for next test/patch to see how the Synthesis system will work.
      Overall it's the best MMO i've ever played so far (i've tried a bit of Albion and WoW till lvl 15)

    What saddens me the most in many of the reviews of this Alpha 2 is that the people giving their opinions didn't even get past level 5...
    Aside from the server issues that somewhat spoiled the overall experience of the alpha, I went all the way through this alpha, and even the previous one.
    I completed absolutely all the available quests and reached the maximum level for the alpha, which is level 15.
    The problem is that too many people focus on the fact that the beginning of the game is "a bit hard," but actually, when you take the time to properly use all the available in-game resources, the game is really not hard at all!
    Sure, the game doesn't hold the player's hand, but I think that's a good thing.
    The only downside for me is mainly some minor balancing issues, but you need to progress in the game to notice them. :/
    Corepunk will be a very good game to me.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  17 днів тому +1

      It's important feedback for them to take into consideration. Onboarding is important and it was specifically what they were testing in this test. It's not necessarily about holding hands, the game actually guides you quite a bit. It's about a lot of it it feeling unfinished, unnecessary, or badly designed. Quests being the primary way to advance due to massive inefficiencies in combat multiplies the issue because it forces players into a gameplay loop until level 5 that will turn off many players, at least in my silly youtuber opinion. If the quests were better and didn't rely on AI voice acting and/or if combat, harvesting, and crafting were also viable to level up from lvl 1 without an associated quest to do so, I think reviews in general would be better.
      First impressions are the whole story, but they are important to get right, especially for a new MMO. That said things like the phasing issues, bland quests and terrible AI voices aren't just start of game related.
      And it's not that the beginning is hard I don't think. I wouldn't consider anything difficult in what I played over a few days of testing, it was more frustration than difficulty with the regen because it involved a lot of walking and/or gathering and little combat to progress because combat was inefficient.
      I know they're doing another test soon which will *hopefully* resolve their server issues, but I'll be interested to see what other changes they make.

    I dont think it is fair.. it is a HARD game, but not because it is hard, but because you have to think and plan.. your first run should be about learning the game, learn the quests and make a route, make a plan, when that plan is made you can get from 1-5 in less than 1,5 hour, and when you are lvl 5 it becomes so much easier, because you can choose passive hp regent. I didn even sit by the campfire once for lvl 1-5 so it can be done right if you have a good plan

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  29 днів тому +1

      I'd respectfully disagree because inconvenience doesn't make it hard. It's also a much easier game as a ranked where it's not important to regen. If as a game you're using no passive regeneration until lvl 5 (as an optional choice) you're artificially inflating the time it takes to complete tasks and it will push out a huge portion of first time players. It's up to them if they want to take that gamble.
      As it stands currently it's not a game I would recommend to anyone for various reasons but that doesn't mean it's not a game for *someone* and that someone could be you and I hope it fits the type of gameplay you enjoy and you find a lot of fulfillment and fun out of the game. My opinion, in the end, doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. 🙂

While I had a bit of hope for it due to not being just straight fantasy, the top-down clicky is an immediate turn-ff for me, and a lot of the other points seem like the core design they're going for just aren't for me. i like the vid . my only concern is i think u came in the game with the wrong idea. the experience this game is going for is a grindy open world pvp. where everyone got a lvled playing ground where money shouldent make a difference and since the way progression is set up in the game u really got to ease into combat and such because the stakes are high. so kinda like a moba u got to really master your char to be effective and after that u up the phase. u rather not die in 4 seconds when your out somewhere questing and u get ganged. or someone using infinite potions to to gank you is also not fun the game is looking to find a way where there is a healthy balance and going into combat is a commitment thats risky if its pve or pvp.
    so yeah they dont have the balanced quite right yet and i do agree that they need more direction in questing.i also agree with the Ai Voices not really my thing but its something that can be changed over time. i think artificial core is really doing their best to deliver a quality game that is gonna bring uniek experience and reshape how other devs and publisher view mmo franchises.

      I agree. I went into it with a mirror traditional mmo in mind, either the more modern fair or the classic grind mmos I loved like UO and Everquest from the late 90s early 00s. It's that reason specifically why I added that a more moba centric player might enjoy it more than idea. I also think the review would have been better if servers had allowed me to group with my friends and experience more than about an hour of grouping.
      That said, two of my friends who religiously play league and Dota 2 also came away less than enthused. I think even a base slow regen would help. It doesn't have to be fast at all but just something

    I'm truthfully a bit surprised by this review because as a fellow old school MMORPG lover alot of what you described as negatives really remind me of the criticisms most new MMORPG players have about old school games; slow combat, grindy, repetitive quests with no guidance, long cooldowns, slow progression, etc. I'm sorry to say this may be one of the few times I disagree with you Red, although I suspect this is just because I haven't played the game myself. I trust if I had the same gameplay experience you had I may support you more. I don't want to believe you've become too accustomed to the quality of life conveniences of newer MMORPGs, so I'm just going to consider this review more of an expression of disappointment largely due to the games similarity to MOBA's rather than MMORPG's. I'm still rooting for Corepunk, but I'm also bitter that I haven't had a chance to play it yet despite signing up for beta access years ago when the game dropped its first trailer.
    As always I appreciate your hard work on these videos. Stay optimistic my friend!

      With every game I'm always open to changing my opinion and even if I end up not liking a game at any point I'll always still want it to succeed and I'll be thrilled for the people who enjoy it. Not every MMO is made for me, after all!
      I will try Corepunk again in the future and I do imagine the game will feel better if you can actually group. Server issues largely prevented us from being able to do so unfortunately as they kept splitting us into shards/phases.
      The problem with the quests having no guidance is that in the past those quests that had some guidance or not much were not your primary source of leveling, grinding npcs was. Grinding NPCs doesnt work as well here due to: lack of mob density, no innate regen.
      Imagine Everquest in 1999 but you could only play as a warrior and you could only regen if you crafted food and each crafted food item accounted for regeneration of about 10% of your health. No sit to regen.
      Slow innate regen versus no innate regen would have improved my review, but I'm not sure anything would get me over the AI dialogue which feels lazy. The world itself needs to matter and AI feels like a shortcut that results in shoddy end-product.

      @@Redbeardflynn I agree with you that the lack of passive regen, even by resting, will annoy me. I don't mind slow combat and grinding mobs, but I'm not interested in having to do a ton of farming and cooking just to keep a constant supply of food which I have to pop after every fight. That's one thing I definitely hope they change. That, and the cosmetic gear, which is something I've never liked.
      As always I appreciate your honest opinions and feedback, and that you engage with your audience. I hope my comments didn't come across in a disrespectful way - I'm still very much a fan of your videos. Hopefully the Corepunk team will take some of your criticisms into consideration, especially the point about passive regen. I really want Corepunk to be a success, not just because I want another MMORPG to play, but because I like the team behind it and they seem to be doing something risky and original, which I think the industry really needs.
      At the end of the day the only thing that really matters is whether the game is fun, and if you, a diehard MMORPG fan was this disappointed, then I expect most other new players will feel the same.

    5:40 idk man, 1 ability since start isnt the problem in my opinion, ill even say if i would have all abilites since beggining i would be dissapointed, cause where is progression then? XD i think they should maybe give you more basic attackspeed, make the fight more dynamic. 12:00 i like that game is harsh, i mean the should find balance in it, but i really like that no health regeneration idea. 16:30 XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD yeah man im dissapointed now, actually for real, are they serious? XDDDD

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  16 днів тому

      Currently that progression of abilities is only through the first few levels as is. You individually progress the skills once you've unlocked them all so it'd just shift lvl 1-4 progression to lvl 1 but also provide more active engagement with the game where cooldowns are very long as is.
      One of the big issues imo with zero passive health regen that I didn't get into in the vid: Ranged are at a constant advantage.
      It's fairly easy to avoid NPC damage at range, especially the attacks we saw that have large tells and slow follow-through whether it's a charge or not.
      I'm fine with slow passive regen, but none doesn't feel difficult, it feels annoying.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  29 днів тому

      I did specifically say that having a group makes the game better. Unfortunately the issues with sharding and being unable to actually be in the same instance while in a group made this impossible despite several attempts.
      That said, passive regeneration is basic. Even very minor passive regen.

    @Redbeardflynn I really like Your review (even i have different opinion) becouse You separate different aspects of the game like combat, questing, graphic etc. and You give examples what You like and dont like and why. But one comment from You is most important You are not the target for this game this is not the game for You. And why? Because examples You give that are for minus like slow phase or no regen or no quest marks for me are positive and for You negative. I love the game i will buyt it and play it becouse i like all those aspects. There is plenty of MMOs that have all those features You mention Corepunk is lacking but those MMOs are boring and dead:D

      It's very valid! The game not being for me doesn't mean it's not going to be fun for others. I do actually prefer a slow and challenging mmo. Just not the way this game is doing it.
      I'm very happy to hear it's hitting the right notes for you, though. I hope we're going into a Renaissance of mmos where you can find an mmo that's different among what's been a sea of sameness for a decade.

    dude is ok for the combat to be slow at lvl 1........................... you are... lvl 1...................................... let gameplay progress be a part of leveling. I don't want to be goku at lvl 1 and goku with more 0 on my damage at lvl 60.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  29 днів тому +2

      I didn't end at lvl 1. The problem with level 1 combat is thats your first impression and its a *bad* first impression. 20s cooldowns are extremely rough especially when the rest of the game isn't lifting it up.
      It's built like a MOBA but thats tied around a very different game play loop based on controlled environments with time limits and fast growth.
      It's a legitimate issue to present the game with that combat not just at lvl 1, but 2, 3, 4, 5..and then you have your skills and its a very very limited skillset. As a destroyer each of my skills was an AOE + 1 buff.
      My suggestion is to speed up the ramp up because that + no innate regen + boring quests + bad dialogue + bad AI voices left me thoroughly unimpressed. It wasn't a single issue.
      That said, I'm more than happy if other people enjoy the game. It's just not for me and I wasn't going to sugarcoat it in an honest review.

    The fact that it is slow at the beginning is to make you feel rewarded the more you play. Different to most games nowadays that give you excitement the first 5 minutes of the game and then the play style sucks and you end up getting bored. This review is pointless. 😂

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  26 днів тому

      Hi! You don't know me I assume. I primarily play old MMOs, Everquest, UO, challenge and slowness are core to how I've played games for 20 years.
      This is not what I had a problem with in the game. Lack of innate regen and overreliance on consumables which manufactures a sense of challenge when really its just time investment combined with boring combat that takes too long to ramp up with the same skills + a shortcut reliance on AI is my issue.
      That said, its my review, and we're all entitled to differing opinions and I'm glad you're enjoying the game :)

      @@Redbeardflynn tbh they won me.
      Overall it's the best MMO i've ever played so far (i've tried a bit of Albion and WoW till lvl 15)

    all these years of development, only to come to early access. What's the point of playing a mmorpg that is still in development? Don't give me the bullshit of "we're "helping" the developers continue development with us buying their game." Yeah sure, you're paying them money to be a beta tester for them, companies used to pay people to test out their games.
    I'd rather wait until the game is fully released.
