Regarding strategy 22 "Don’t judge yourself" I have a favorite quote from the dancer Martha Graham:
"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others."
This is awesome 👌
That's a solid quote! Thanks for sharing!
i was screaming as i was reading it. a m a z i n g. THANK YOU SIR
Fantastic, thanks for sharing this!!
wow ♥️
26. 'Reverse engineer' the music you love and use your observations as a template for your own songs.
I pick a track and first determine it's length in bars. I then listen to it over and over again identifying all the most important parts. Then I grab some graph paper. Along the top I mark every four or eight bars, depending on length. Along the side I list all the parts I identified previously. Then I listen back as many times as is needed to map out where the parts come and go. The result looks like a timeline in a DAW and is a representation of the structure and instrumentation of the original song. I then use this map as a guide for something of my own. You are of course entirely free to adhere to or deviate from this guide as you please. Not only is it a quick way to start and finish but it's also very informative. You'll be surprised how simple songs often are.
You'd be amazed how much easier that is when you map the track from the audio file in a daw rather than on paper! :)
To take that further, do cover songs.
Muito obrigado, thisisobsolete. Vou seguir sua ideia.
This hit me harder than it should have.
I got so stuck in watching music making videos that I do not have energy left to actually make music.
Thank you for reminding me about what would work better.
very helpful tips! im gonna give them a go. Another saying that helped me mentally with songs is "Art in never finished, its only abandoned"
Wow! It feels like you targeted me personally with almost each and every point you made. This might just be the single most important video I've ever watched, for real. Thank you so so much, Bo! Tack så hemskt mycket!
me too
Really awesome video, Bo! I'd love to see more of these videos where you use your psychologist perspective.
my idea is to do at least one every month. a more reflective piece of you will
@@BoBeats That's great to hear! I really enjoyed this video.
Yeah definitely. We have a lot of information about techniques on how to make 8 bar loops but not enough on mindset.
I've taken 2 days of work, have my setup configured and ready to go and am locking myself in with this video to motivate me to *finish something*. It's a block I need to break.
After I sleep for the night, of course.
As an undergrad in Counseling psychology and a music minor learning to produce in my first year, I love this videos direction. Very amazing and relatable to my current path, and speaks my language. Thank you for these useful tips!
Great tips clearly influenced by both your experience as a Producer/Musician/UA-camr and as a Psychotherapist. Unfortunately not buying new gear will only happen if manufacturers stop creating such cool new gear.
Love the idea of deleting stuff so you focus on what you value. That is gold. Still watching this to remember all the things you said lol 😂
Hell yes. Great video and a reminder. Let's get these songs done people! Have a prosperous week everybody!
and oh yeah... Remember: Fuck perfection.
#20 (learn your gear) is the most important thing for me, when you can use your equipment without even thinking, it`s less likely to kick you out of that creative zone because Creating and Thinking uses totally different areas of the brain, so being able to get what you want on "auto-pilot" keeps you in the flow for longer and always gets results. :)
A few friends of mine said that I shouldn't periodically delete my stuff. But sometimes when I have too much files and folder (even if this is a backup folder on an external hard disk), my mind becomes cluttered, I don't have a real direction anymore (I have the habit of practicing every genre I like, so sometimes I get lost).
So I delete old exports, entire projects, samples, things I don't use and bits and pieces I will never open again. Last time I deleted my whole library, filled with too much samples, to make a new one with only sounds made by me, and this is much better now.
Nice video, thanks
I swear i felt like this shouldn't be free on youtube.. You almost got me on all points... Best video I've seen on youtube hands down
22 is so true. Don’t judge your music. I can’t even tell you how many times I made beats that I just moved on from and when I went to the main studio to work with an artist. I went through old beats I never finished and they were like OH my God that’s a hit why aren’t you finishing it and was a beat from years ago lol.
TBH, I was gonna skip this video when I saw it in my feed because I’ve seen other synth UA-camrs talk about this topic before, but their take never resonated quite like yours did with me. As soon as I heard “fundamental attribution error,” I knew this was going to be different! The mix of theoretical ideas to ponder and practical advice to follow was very much appreciated. Will be rewatching this again and again.
Thank you Richard. I am glad I could do something different.
Happy New year Bo, great video.
Fantastic video. Great quality too. Bravo BoBeats!
#20 - Amazing how useful manuals and some tinker time can be to get results. :-)
I can now assign tracks 1-8 on the Zoom R16 to tracks 9-16. Also, I always thought that I could only record to tracks 1-8, since it only has 8 inputs, and tracks 9-16 were playback only. And that I needed to move tracks 1-8 to tracks 9-16 in order to free up tracks 1-8 for recording again. It turns out that I can leave tracks 1-8 alone, set them to playback, and then record to tracks 9-16, without having to reassign tracks 1-8. Okay, this is a game changer for me!
Thank you for the kick start!
thanks so much for this video i searched "how to finish tracks in fl studio" and this was the first one that i clicked on.
i know this video isnt about fl studio and uually when i notice the video doesnt feature my DAW FL Studio I ALWAYS immediately go and search for a different video.
Thank God i didn't do that this time!!!
Most DAWs are very similar but DAW specific videos are of course nice too but im definitely a lot more open minded now that I didnt click away!!! im rambling lol thanks again!
This is really top notch content, Bo! RESPECT! 🤗😁👊
All 25 of them are to concider. Thanks for the eye opener!
I needed to hear all of this. Thank you!
I liked the link you draw between psychology and music making/learning activities. It can new big thing for the music making related youtube channels.
This was really good! I needed to hear this. Thank you.
Thank you for making this! A lot of what you've covered here is questions I've been trying to answer myself without being able to fully articulate or find strategies to solve them.
This is one of my favorite videos from you. It's bringing your skill sets together in a powerful way: Your knowledge of music production, psychology, clear communication... It's a gem of a video. Every bedroom producer would benefit from watching it. Bravo.
Awesome video thanks bo. I relate to alot of these points so hopefully I'll get some more tracks finished using these steps
Bro thank you. Truly inspirational
Awesome video. Thank you, Bo!!
Best video yet Bo! Brilliant insights into the psychology of music making, and some fantastic advice. Keep up the good work!
*raises hand*
I can confess before watching this vid, why i’m not progressing in anything that i generally like to do: 1 I’m lazy arse, 2 I spent tons of time on stupid non-productive things, 3 I don’t manage my time properly. Lack of inspiration is minor reason. Sometimes I can’t even approach to my synths and make some noise. Weird shit is that i’m not afraid of modifying or soldering synths or MIDI devices. Is it because I somehow persuaded myself that music is harder to learn? Hooman brain is weird device, looks like i don’t know how to use it properly
Very Helpful. Thank you Bo. I am left inspired after watching this.
Truly golden 😍😍😍 Thank you!!!
Extremely helpful video thanks Bo!
Thanks Bo, this is really motivating and gives me food for thought. I'm currently on song 7 of a ten song record and I'm really enjoying how it's beginning to take form. I'll remember your tips!
This was fantastically inspiring, thanks so much for the great video!
This is a wonderfully important video, especially number three.
"LACK OF MOTIVATION"
Profound advice .. really spot-on and insightful. Super-helpful, thanks a million !
Wow, great video BoBeats, glad I found your channel. As a new electronic music producer I have been hitting all the issues you talk about and your strategies will surely help me. Thanks! :)
How anyone could dislike this I don’t understand. So so helpful! Thank you Bo.
This was so incredibly helpful and super practical!! Thank you so much for breaking this down. I'm doing #fawm this February to get more songs done!!
I got some great advices! Thank you Bo! Very helpful video!
Hi Bo. I found this video via Google search. I just wanted to write: Thank you. I needed this. I'm definitely guilty of a lot of these things..
Glad it was helpful
Thanks for sharing your strategies! Great to see that you made a video on something I requested on your Instagram stories poll.
My favourite strategies:
Prioritise and Conflicting Motivation
what a great video idea and great advice! thanks so much bob eats! 😁
Man, you're awesome. Congrats!
Thank you Bo. It's nice to see a different perspective of music other than what our ears want and rather what the mind is doing to fulfill the ear's desire.
Love this! thanks for the tips!
Fab! Just when I need this too!! All really excellent points. Love your studio setup too!
You made the absolute best video on this topic and I have seen them all haha. Thank you so much!!!
This video was absolutely amazing and so useful, thank you 🙏🏽
Thanks a lot! Really great advice. A few of them are a bit too obvious but some are the real gems. In fact I tried recently to create my own list and came to the very similar ideas.
Most excellent and helpful. Thank you!
What a wonderful video Bo, I will 100% refer to this as I continue to grow with my music. There were several tips in this video that hit close to home and really made me stop and think... so thank you so much!!
Great video man, I really needed to hear some of these tips. You got me inspired.
very good - glad it was a deeper take on it... learnt a lot....
Damn this is such a good video. Hearing someone else say it helps a lot. I have found if I can understand my tendencies I can do something about it and this has helped me understand why I cannot finish my songs lately.
Quite possibly the best video I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you. I decided to make an album this year and I've stumbled onto some of these points on my own, but having them all in one place is ultra helpful.
I knew this would be good in the first 2 minutes so I took some serious notes.
Thanks as always!
Thanks Bo! Great video; so many home truths in here. I hope I can apply some of these this week. Although my work space is such a mess I could procrastinate for a week just tidying it! Seriously tho; this is very helpful.
I needed this video in my life!!!!!
Muchas Gracias.
I love coffee too! This was a really great, down-to-earth video. The mature, calm, and supportive tone that you approach these subjects with really makes the video refreshing.
I am now subscribed. Thanks for taking the time to make this. I found it very helpful as i need to finish some music 👍✊
Thanks for the tips. One of the hardest things I’ve been struggling with in terms of finishing songs is song arrangement. I make instrumental techno-infused hip hop and my previous experience was playing in rock bands so I tend to approach song arrangement using a rock style which doesn’t always translate well to instrumental electronic music.
I’m trying to catalog a lot of different arrangement patterns for various music styles that I like so that I and anyone else interested can have a better way of moving forward when they’re ready to start laying out the song structure. I might even make a web app that generates chord progressions and arrangement patterns based on key, musical style, etc.
Super useful! I need to do some prioritising big time!
Lots of useful advice in this one. Cheers
Great vid as always!
Very worthwhile video! Thanks for mixing in the real psychology, a factor many would forget.
Best advice on the topic I've ever heard on every point. So valuable!
Wow. This is so helpful. I don't know how I missed this video before. I'm having an inspiring lunch watching this. I will make sure to rewatch this monthly to remind me. Great Video Bo!
This is exactly what I needed, cheers!
Great video Bo. I've definitely been struggling to finish music for a while now and some of these strategies really got me thinking.
I like a lot of the strategies. But even in the short time since I watched the video for the first time, earlier today, I've used the quick variation strategy already and got a lot further forward, faster than I have a for a while.
As well as music, the day job and supporting my family, I'm currently studying coaching and I found this video, together with you Finding Your Voice as a Creative video as informative (if not more in some cases) than many of the formal coaching videos I've watched. And way more professionally produced.
Super super helpful Bo. Reposting
Helpful advice. Thanks
As always, great advice.
I saw this video a while ago, it really helped me a lot! Everytime I begin to get stuck, I remember this video
This Video is truly amazing and helpful not only for making progress in producing music. Thank you good sir for that great advice!
I almost didn't watch this, but I did and started cleaning up my best projects and put together a spreadsheet so I can plug away at my album for the next several weeks. This was all great advice and was much appreciated. Thank you!
Superb video with plenty of great ideas! One of my favourites: "don't listen to your demos" .. this is something I can relate to. I have so many little demos, it's absurd. I have one demo where I was in the flow and played a really excellent synth solo, and I'm so in love with the result of that performance, that I realise I will not ever be able to recreate that vibe again. The more I listen to that demo, however, the more that glorious synth solo gets locked into my mind, and the expectation of myself to nail that performance a second time when I do the song "for real" paralyses me to move ahead at all. So then I start a new demo and the vicious cycle repeats. So I highly recommend as well, that you don't get too in-love with your demos, or listen to them too often. You will get so used to how the demo sounds, you'll be afraid to ruin the song by not getting it exactly right. BoBeats - this is your best video yet!
An other really sympathetic and well concluded topic, much appriciated!
Very valuable video and spot on. ✊ respect
That was a really thought-provoking set of advise, man! It's so easy to get bogged down with technicalities and excuses, while desperately trying to get some music done... Thank you for reminding us to just step back and look within every once in a while! 👍
This video help us a lot! Thanks
Great tips which are useful for any producer out there.
You are great! Thanks for this helpful video!!
Thank you for your insight.
Awesome video. Thanks!
Very useful! Thank you
Very nice advices!
So much truth in this video man. Great stuff. I really need to focus on learning reaper more because i definitely fall into loop mode on my digitakt. overbridge would probably help too though 😤
Revisiting this video! I really appreciate the well informed advice. Thx Bo!
Thanks for checking it out
Thank you very much sir .This is what I consider a treasure of insight and wisdom .Making music is a pleasure ,a fulfilling venture .
Great video! Thanks for making it. I will definitely be referring other musicians to this.
I've made mistakes with everyone of these strategies, I will listen to this a couple of times to make sure I learn from my mistakes!!! Thank you for your excellent advice, key to the process is defining a workflow that works for you and stick with that formula
This is the BEST video I’ve ever seen on finishing music. So thoughtful and insightful. Your psychological approach made it much more practical than just tech tips. Thanks!
Great advice my friend!
Thank you for this🙏🏾
This was excellent. Really helpful, solid advice and all felt achievable (with the possible exception of buying new gear but I partly blame you for that!). You should write a book - this advice is applicable to all creative endevors. There's a lot of psuedo motivational self-help drivel out there, your advice cuts right through it.
