- Finishing songs can be extremely difficult. That's why i've been using this technique to help finish songs faster. Basically take a song you love, that has a similar vibe to yours, and copy it's arrangement! This will teach you how to structure songs of any genre, and help you learn how to make music faster! I know that all sounds like a terrible infomercial but there's a lot of truth in it hahah. Either way i hope this helps you out since it def helps me!

Mono tasking, poly tasking/easy peasy beautiful cover girl...dude you're on fire
I´m modular tasking (sometimes patched wierd)
I really needed this. I have about a million 4-bar loops that I've come up with but I can never figure out the path forward from there. Finding a similar song and trying to trace the structure is such a good idea. Thanks for making this video!
So now you have about 5 million new sections to record, have fun!
same here. thank *YOU* Ricky.
What’s your SoundCloud?
Srsly 4-8 bar loop world the common trap I fell into also
I like the idea, it's a great way to escape the horrors of arranging a song and lack of inspiration.
Horrors indeed!
yea man, and that alone can keep you from making a dope track! Thanks for coming through Marlow
I sold my mpc live and came back into ableton because of this stuff
100%…
man you have literally just tore down a huge brick wall in my mind. i literally have about 300 projects that sound good, that i got stuck on structurally and moved on from. Thank you for everything!
I absolutely LOVE this mindset! I've finished so many more songs after adopting this. 15 years back I would have had this notion of "I have to invent the wheel every time I write a song, everything else is stealing". That creates so much constriction.
Year old comment but literally! It’s been what’s stopping me from just making music for so long, when really so long as you’re making your own sound, the arrangement is just the dimensions of your art
my preferred method - - Jam and record it all. It will sound bad for a bit then get good...then get bad again. Take the bit that was good and remix those stems. Intro, build, release, breakdown, build, outro. Give the stems to friends and have them also do remixes - they will think of things you didnt - now you have a B Side to.
finding willing friends is hard often though
I second this! recently for any beat that I feel is okay but not great, I wait a day or two, then I come back to it, I will figure out okay what is the best part of this beat? What’s the “star”? I make that the jumping off point and then destroy & rebuild everything else around it until its better than it was
I DID IT RICKY I'M POLYTASKING MY MULTITIMBRAL BRAIN!
hahahaha
😂😂
This is really a great tip. When I first got into producing years ago, like many, I struggled with arrangement of tracks.
What I used to do as an exercise is similar to this "tracing" idea. I would import and correctly warp a track from an artist I liked. Then using empty midi tracks and blocks, I'd paint in what sounds where playing and when. So like chords progression A, B; melody A, B; various Drums; bassline; FXs; vocal lines; etc.
After doing this, you can zoom all the way out and BAM! You've got a very complete and in depth skeleton of the track in question. What's left is almost a kind of "paint by numbers" to just filling up those empty blocks with your own sounds to complete the production.
I dig this approach too. I would do this mainly when working on cover or remix. A good way to get the core going before doing your own stuff.
This sounds really cool to do!!!! I should try this!
When I was a kid I would turn on Bob Ross to relax and learn, now I watch your videos to relax and learn.
Bob Ross! The ASMR OG!!
I'm sure that guy smoked weed because he was too chilled.👀
@Stephen Anthony Its a joke. People on here are too serious.
I know some people are just mellow and I'm happy they are.
@Stephen Anthony Not everyone who does drugs is an addict, either.
Stephen Anthony come again?
Ayy, that's a great shot of Morro Rock! Also, I've really been digging the EP.
one of my favorite places in CA
This is exactly what I needed, and it's always so inspiring to watch any of your videos. Thanks!
Been doing the block method the past year and went from being stuck in the loop stage and folders filled with “idea loops” to finishing 4 tracks in a weekend. When I say finished I mean the arrangement, and first draft. Before I come back a few days later to fine tune. I find hinting elements before the first major drop is key. Letting everything breathe. Chipping away at the track. 🙏🏼 love the content!
I love how your camera looks and just the whole warm / homey vibe of your studio and and how it matches to the warm sound of your music.
Dude thank you. Your workflow is very intuitive for me and it makes getting over that arrangement slump so much more bearable. Good shit
Been looking for a tutorial like this. You are a GOAT!
All of your videos and tips are just so nice to follow. Keep on
Spot on. Great watching you work man. Thanks RT.......
Love the content. Gets me in production mode 🕺Thank you 🙏
dude this is what ive been needing man!! ive been stuck in the loop for a wile ...thx!!
love your videos and outlook, cheers ricky
Dude, great video. Subscribed. Also, your judgement for making tracks is so on point.
simply the best video about track finishing, thanks :)
Thank you for this method bro thats the exact thing that i needed right now!
really like your vibe thanks for the vid
Great stuff man! Love your vids!! Thank you for your generosity.
The way he said “then the drums die” made me realize we are all humans that will also die when it’s our time, and it only contributes to the entire beautiful song of existence
I'm absolutely mind blown. I thank you so much seriously wow.
Solid advice. Useful tips. Already knew most of this, but there were a couple ideas I had overlooked, and the whole thing was a good and much needed reminder. Thanks for posting this!
Ricky, you are so inspiring, many thanks for your videos
Thank you Vitaly for kicking it, i appreciate you
Finding myself here more and more, great tips and super inspiring . This video was gold dust for me - great to watch you work !
Love your videos Ricky - so cinematic & calming to watch. I love this method - I feel like I'm going insane trying to make Session View work for me, so it was refreshing to hear you immediately mention your relationship with it
this guy is the best find I ever had on music production... kudos
Thanks so much for this Ricky - very practical and inspirational advice!
This has been so helpful! I'm going to use this technique to blow up the song structures I've been using way too long. Thanks, Ricky!
Very cool idea that I haven't ever thought of. Thank you!!
Great video, thanks for this! I really needed to watch this today haha
Hands down one of the BEST UA-camrs out there - thank YOU. (...but I AM going to miss seeing that gorgeous 1000 you had!) - Cheers from Dallas, Ricky!
Finally a detailed explanation of using reference tracks for arrangement 😊
Defiantly going to do some poly tasking this weekend. Love that! Cheers for more great tips 🙌
Nice info man thank you, you have such cool vibe aswell, you are a cool teacher
it’s been a minute since i’ve seen your videos, glad to be back here 😩🙈 they’re so damn aesthetically pleasing and informative
Fantastic video, and just really well shot and edited also. You achieved the rare blend of making a video long enough to feel natural and conversational, without getting verbose or ranting. Subscribed!
For someone who’s new to production, this is incredibly helpful. Thank you SO much Ricky!
This!!! I've done a similar thing on pen and paper, to try to grasp the building blocks behind "x" song. But doing your thing MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
you got a fresh energy my bro,
uplifting
You’re a humble beast on those creation skills! Your videos are always edited so well. Thank you for sharing that hotness! Looking forward to the album purchase for sure! Just let me know when it’s ready, please!
Love this, its eye opening. Even this method of doing it. Like i've seen people use references to draft a track but this way is completely different.
this is really really HELPFUL, thanks ricky for another great one, glad to see you keep sharing the knowledge! saludos desde chile
I know this vid is 2 years old but has rly helped me work towards finishing a project ive kinda had for 3 years now(hopefully i can get it done very soon), so you've earned yourself a new sub :)
really enjoyed your video man!!
i'm absolutely certain it is easy peasy beautiful cover girl.
Great video Ricky. I’m in the middle of an electronic project and this is exactly the kind of thing I needed to see. Thank you.
"Tracing song" is an absolutely correct definition of that arranging-style :) I remember how I used to "trace" The Chemical Brothers - Leave Home around 20 years ago. That was my first experiments of creating tracks. Acid by Sonic Foundry (I guess) was my first DAW, or Fruity loops maybe. As a result I created another track with nothing similar to "Leave Home". A bit later Session-workflow in Remix Live (a predecessor of Ableton Live) was a dramatic game-changer for me. Today you can make tracks in Session-workflow even using Korg Gadget on your iPad which is totally cool! Especially when you have a super combo setup like Ableton+Push-2
Congrats on your EP boss
Ricky, dude, first of all cheers from Kyiv, Ukraine. Big fan of yours. Been watching your youtube for quite a while now. Then started listening to you on Spotify. Big big big fan of your vibe and skills. And got to say your picture is insanely good. It's such a pleasure to watch your videos. Man, just much love! God bless you!
Cool desk by the way! Always nice to have some live playing on top of the sequencer work;
I don't listen to this type of music but I respect your advice a lot. Your tips are so I depth. 🔥 I can tell that you love creating. The way you piece everything together so seamlessly is inspiration. I finally subbed to keep gettingmore inspired. 🙌 Thank you, I'll see next time.
Such a useful tip! Now I'm inspired to finish so many tracks
Very inspiring. Taking sound designs from one song and mashing it up with arrangement ideas from another could also work.
EP is great! I love using this method.
Nice! Finally, been stuck in 4 Bar loop that are fire. Thanks a lot for this.
Fantastic video mate. Practicing this now!
That's basically how we can learn to produce, or even learn anything by this way. Great video
Dude, what a great video. I love the idea of following the outline of a song and creating something new using those guidelines. Gives you plenty of room to be creative but also keeps you on track (pun intended)!
Really inspiring stuff, even if you're just using this method to break out of a loop momentarily and rekindle some inspiration seems very helpful, and as we can see it didn't take long of you using this technique to be fully in the music not relying on the trace track at all! Great video
this was incredibly helpful dude. thank you!
I love your tips bro.. i love your work and the way your mind works. Wish I lived in your community and knew you personally. Always good stuff.. and im super jelo on all your gear and talent.
The most useful video I’ve ever seen🔥👍great thanks man! Now I’m ready to make my own EP😉
..thanks a lot for this video..love the way of sketching your track around an existing one you like..struggling a lot with 4 to 8 bar ideas and stuck with arranging them to a track 🖤
“Polytasking”!!! Hahaha nice one.
total brainfart haha, still laughing about it now
Awesome track. Genius method. As always.
Shout out to Nord. At once the most abundantly used (professionally) yet consistently underrated and under reviewed music machine makers.
Great video, thanks Mr.Tinez!
It's great to know that other people do this! Thanks Ricky
Man, this was so helpful and relaxing, thanks!
This is good advice, I have literally thousands of ideas from over the years but I never finish anything. I’m at the point now where every time I sit in my studio I come up with something dope but then I just shut all my gear off and it’s in the ether. I’m going to try this next time and see what happens
liked and subscribed!
Amazing content, thank you for taking the time to do these videos they help me a ton!!
Always love to hear these final words. So true bro!!!! Share the love, share the knowledge, knowledge is power. Peace! Love you man
Thanks for cruising through KGP, i appreciate you
Brilliant way to sculpt an idea!
Just what I needed. Thank you so much!!!!!
I always enjoy learning new tips and tricks...
This is awesome, exactly what I needed. Have around 200+ ideas that are just not tracks yet. Time to revise what I've written and make it into a track. Again. Thank you, awesome video an well explained.
Beautiful jam! 👏👏
this is so helpful. thanks for this!!
I would love to have a course from you on video and coloring, i really love the vibe your videos have because of how you film and color them
Very nice tip, and advice. Thanx!!
Bro, not enough producers do tutorials like you on UA-cam. Keep it up man!
That "kick trick" is pretty cool. Thanks man
this is exactly what i needed this morning
You need to do a masterclass -- your voice and attitude are perfectly suited to teaching this stuff. I would absolutely take a class from you.
This is a QUALITY TRACK !!!!! I would buy this in a heartbeat ???. Please make this available to buy !!!! My genres are usually RnB, Neo Soul and Hip Hop that i produce but this is exceptional !!!!Keep up the great work and on the strength of this track alone , I've now subscribed !!!
One of the most needed videos online
This is so genius... Arraignment has been one of my weak points, Thank you so much for this.
Ricky you’re the best
Thank you so much for your work, and sharing this with us
Polytasking made my day 😂
Great stuff, man!
“Please don’t blow my ears” is exactly what I say every time I’m setting an external effect on Live (too many times they blew though) 😄
Lovely video Ricky, best before bedtime as usual.
this is the formula to be able to execute anything
This is a great approach. Soloing a muted track is a clever idea!
Extremely helpful tip. 💯
Love that you gave away your secrets ;)
Brilliant vid ricky
Thanks for this I’m really struggling to arrange and finish my ideas. Big help thank you again 😊
