1. Deep processing: ability to think critically, connect ideas and understand complex concepts 2. Self regulation: mastery and adaptation of learning techniques and self-awareness of using the right strategy for the right task 3. Mindset: attitude toward failure and experimentation
The quiz has now been updated and the bug which gave more people "Other" has been fixed! The "other" category is something that should have only occurred around 3% of the time based on our sample data set. But due to a probably bug in the quiz logic, it was being given out 10x more frequently! I've just tested it with an additional set of cases and it seems to be functioning as normal. If you received "Other" before, please do the quiz again!
- Learner types are about assessing your habits and processes as a learner. They are based on 5 key dimensions: - *deep processing* - *self-regulation* - *mindset* - *self-management* - *retrieval practice* - Deep processing is your raw cognitive power and ability to think critically. It can be improved through training habits. If you have low deep processing, ineffective study techniques may not work as well for you. - Self-regulation is your ability to monitor and adapt your learning methods. High self-regulation can compensate for lower deep processing. - Mindset is about your resilience and response to mistakes. A fixed mindset limits improvement, while a growth mindset enables it. Mindset can be the most limiting factor. - Common learner types: - *Unchained* (fixed mindset) - *Sprout* (growth mindset but low processing/self-regulation) - *Trooper* (high self-regulation but low processing) - *Carp* (high processing but low self-regulation). - Knowing your learner type helps you focus your efforts on improving the dimensions that will make the biggest impact for you. A free diagnostic quiz is linked in the video description.
The fact that comments like these are under the video makes me reconsider my initial opinion that the average learner is not constrained by any of these.
Thoughts while watching: - There is more than 1 theory of learning styles - it would be good to be clear what theory you are referring to. - Styles aren't really explained when looking at behaviours or cognition. - Types - takes to long to explain - why assume we don't want to watch long videos? - Building habits from neuroplasticity seems redundant - How do you measure deep processing? If people can't self measure how would they know what to do or not to do. - Weight lifting analogy seems inaccurate - technique can beat strength (far too much nuance over looked for me) - Using different tools seems like someone anyone can rather than a 'type' - Fixed and Growth mindset (assumed Carol Dwecks work) seems inconsistent here - fixed mindset sticks which what they do so why would they go looking for new/better technique? - Avoiding failure can be people in growth mindset - Types seem like level of expertise, making them very dynamic. How can that be used? tracked/measured/made aware off FYI - I am an "Other" type according the quiz...
A fellow "Other" here so I feel you a lot... I think a more apt analogy (coming from a biased CS standpoint) is that high Deep Processing is analogous to having strong raw processing power (for instance, a i9 cpu), and having bad technique is like running inefficient software. If the software is written badly (ref. Starfield), even a very strong setup will still stutter and fail (but with enough power it can be compensated), whereas highly optimized programs will run smoothly even on ancient CPUs. I personally feel like I match closest with the Karp category, not because I have difficulty with adapting to new learning methods, just that I have difficulty switching to a different style simply because I don't have to. If and when presented with a different way to learn, I still adapt to it pretty effectively, which is probably why the quiz didn't consider me as "bad at self-regulating." Also, to continue the CPU analogy, I feel like I'm more like a heavily overclocked cpu with very bad cooling, so I can learn a lot and adapt very fast, at the cost of feeling burnt out and generally having very few "actually effective" hours in a given week. This "motivation" or "endurance" metric seems to be missing, at least in the three dimensions presented here.
Thanks. You've asked some very thoughtful and interesting questions. I agree that being clear about referencing what and which theory he is using would be useful. I also wondered whether a "too long" video is as much about protecting the content of the 'ICanStudy' school which of course is a business. Shorter videos of 10-15 minutes seem to be the most popular length on YT. Making short video that summarise key points can be made as 'tasters' and promotional tools to convert people to purchase the more detailed assistance. That's fair enough - videos take a lot of time and effort to make. I kinda believe that he also does have a more altruistic reason for uploading videos. I have returned to study after a fairly long time and I can learn quite a lot of basic information about learning that I think will be really useful and hopefully save me a lot of time and effort. I'm interested in what you mean by your point "Building habits from neuroplasticity seems redundant". I know you wrote this months ago but if you see this and have a minute I'm interested in your opinion - no probs if it'd take too long to explain though :)
Guilty spark here. Smart, have good learning methods, AND a good mindset, I just suck at doing things early enough to learn everything I need to; even if I learn insanely fast, I'll always have to sacrifice one or two sections I need to learn because I genuinely don't have enough time left to go over them, without losing what I've already learnt😭😭
12:30, Damn! Stop calling me out Dr. Sung! The diagram that you showed at 12:58 really sums up my life lol. Consuming content, but not doing anything about it. Thankfully I have been getting better in these past days.
Just wanna share a few thoughts about you, Dr. Sung :Đ I've accidentally "jumped" into 1 or 2 of you videos when I started learn in university, and your context have helped me a lot with my learning journey. I remembered like 2 years ago (?) People are really go crazy about space repetition and active recall, flash cards, etc... but with a law student like me, those methods take too much time and energy while the results are not too good. But after accidentally found your videos, I could learn in a really relaxing ways while still being able to enjoy myself and doing other stuffs. I just wanna say thank you, thank you very much for your help.
I like how Justin is always talking about seeing the big picture and being mindful of the context for information that we consume and only now is he giving us all the parts that form a comprehensive big picture for cognition and systematic learning. Not complaining, the guy is already putting out so much valuable content for free, just pointing out the irony
Hi Justin, thank you for your videos - I found them a few days ago and leave more knowledgeable and excited each time. I was a PA student and recently withdrew because of poor performance. I believe I am a “sprout”. Not the outcome I wanted, but your channel is helping see where and how to strengthen my learning. My biggest pitfalls were studying voluminous content and recall. Thank you again!
I think Karp (tho in the test it said, spark) here as well, and i am already in collegue. Believe me, you will need it, i speak of expirience. Getting into university after i got good grades without ever having to do anything felt like i got punched in the face. Tho it probably also depends on the major.
I accidently learnt to do deep processing in high school. I can confirm that studying is easy for me. Even if I write down linear notes, I still have a map of the theme in my head and do better in tests then other studients. Of course, if I use better methods, I get even better results.
i used to think I'm a excellent student in my class in my hometown school, but after I went to Yonsei Uni in S.Korea, I have realized that I'm a normal person.
Thank you Justing for all your videos. You helped me to change my entire perspective of learning and realizing that there is so much more and I can go further and further.
I'm a last year medical student and i have recently seen your videos and i already LOVE them. I've always loved these topics that you cover and honestly you are doing my dream job. I just wanted to let you know how inspiring you are and i hope you get better and better everyday😍😍
Wow you don't know how happy I am to find your channel. I am going back to school after 18 years, and I was freaking out. appreciate your videos. cool you are in Auckland, I'm in Tauranga. Being a dad of 4, going back to school, trying to get a degree after never even finishing college, faaar bro, your help is invaluable.
I want those last two dimensions, so here’s me best guess. Retrieval practice is your strategy to memorize things. Self management is how efficient and disciplined we implement learning into a schedule.
hello Justin. I am a new commer in your group. I was thinking about my life, my future whether I can do something btter in my life or not and I stumbled upon your video in seach of guidence. this video really helped me boost my confidence and also to give myself time to think about the methods and techniques and also my mediocare routine as a high school teen. Your survey said I am unchained which at first I was curious that how on earth I am like this but after a retest, I admit it. just waiting for the pdf and looking forward to grow now. Thanks for your help and your motivation (well this video isn't meant to be a motivational stuff rather it is a guide and informational one but who knows).
This is the first video that I watch in your channel and I'm impressed, you actually were clear and straightforward... thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge
Deep processing is underrated yet yields better overall results/performance especially in the academic field. But, if I may ask. How do you do "deep processing"? If one can improve one's deep processing ability, how can we measure it? Can we even measure it?
I think I have the first of the three, and none of the others. Terrible at self regulating, and will mentally shut down if I ever fail. BUT am a really deep learner, comparing what I'm learning to past knowledge as a default. I logically know what a growth mindset is, but struggle to walk the walk. Though I can talk and teach it all day. I have this weird trauma response where I can explain things I don't understand, even to the point that it helps others get new insights, and this may be part of the problem too.
I have so many questions. I did your quiz, answered it as honestly as possible. I’ve always had top academic results, why should I believe the diagnostic tool you have devised? What is this category “Deep Processing”? What is it based on? Where can I find the evidence? Or is it just a marketing funnel? I’m fascinated by your presentations, but I’m not so sure about your product. Why, earlier in the presentation, did you instruct us to ‘think of a genius” Yeah, Einstein, but more so his first wife, Stephen Hawking (none of his wives), and my Mum. “T hink of a genius” the power of suggestion is so strong. Framing puts you in the picture if you can see yourself in it. So our student wants desperately to work smarter, achieve better, and there is the 🥕. can they ever get the carrot? I hope so for his/her sake.
subscribed to your channel, god bless you for helping millions out there . i am 32 now but i always had problem in learning. i hope your videos will help me
Not trying because im fairly confident what the end result will be either way ❌ Trying because i know i literally cant get worse and have nothing to lose >:) ✅ (Apart from time i guess but i have nothing better to do)
Type of learners: Note:Your type isn't innate, you can change your type by changing your habits and improving yourself. 1:-Unchanged: Limited by mindset,60%, Sprout:low deep processing and self regulation but have growth mindset Trooper:high growth mindset and self regulation but limited deep regulation. Karps: low levels of self regulation, have growth mindset
Thank you, Justin and the team, for the great video! I took the free test and got "other" so I started thinking would it be possible to share the full test for a fee, separate from the rest of the course?
It wasn’t until I got to college that I had to learn how to study. I felt deflated in the beginning of college because before college, I was able to grasp materials while in class without opening my texbooks.
@@JustinSung If you could make a video describing the structure of learning for students with higher order learning, you have already told us alot about priming and then making mindmaps, and past papers (which I have been using for a few days and it is amazing ) but if you could tell us when and how to do the retrieval practices and in what time intervals it would be a complete package Thank you!
Thanks for these videos, I am starting the university next month and I am considering to buy an ipad for taking notes and improve my workflow. I have always achieved great notes but my way of study is not quite optimal, with these videos I try to follow your steps in order to find the best study flow.
Hello Dr.Justin sung, im truly impressed by the depth of insight provided in this video ,Your expertise in this area is truly valuable, and I believe that it would be incredibly beneficial for many individuals if you were to consider authoring a book or a series of books on these subjects. Your ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner makes your insights extremely accessible and valuable to a wide audience. I imagine that a book from you could serve as an invaluable resource for anyone looking to enhance their learning and cognitive processes. I eagerly anticipate the possibility of reading your work and gaining deeper understanding from your expertise. Best regards Your student 🤘
When it comes to the mindset part, I SO HIGHLY RECOMMEND, the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck. This book looks into how mindset changes everything, and how you can learn the growth mindset, and I will absolutely say ever since I have read this book, it has improved my thinking as a student exponentially. Not only that tho this is just such a good book overall and helps for many aspects in life that require mindset
This is an absolutely unique but the most interesting video. I’m a high achiever , doctor, with 2 residencies in uk/ USA. My partner an Ivy League multiple degree . I am an MENSAN and he is in intertel , the way he studies and remembers dosent work for me , I’m slow methodical and require time , he studies at the speed so high. I want young people to watch this video with their parents slowly and understand eveyword Justin talks about , becaus3 no learning coach is going to be this explosive in analysis by living in the head of a student
deep processing seems very fixed in this video even though it was mentioned you can change it because of neuroplasticity. im dying to know more about since I didnt really grasp this too well in the video.
To concluded the conclusion 😅 in my understanding Change the idea of "I can't into How can?". Try some diff. Method that resonate with you and leave what it doesn't our brain need some mapping but don't be fixated about it learn to use some imagination to expand and grow even better 😅
try the quiz twice, both times the result was Unchained. i wish i knew effective methods at all so i can learn all the things i want. I think im trap in the circle of wanting to improve and not nowing effective ways to learn in a consistens manner o learning at all
What do you mean by Self Management? Do you use it in a casual way or it has different meaning? How could someone assess he is good at self management or not and the ways to improve it ?
Great video. Though I've to ask, what does the dimension of "self-management" entail? My first thought was your idea of learning enablers, but you said most people aren't lacking in it, so now I am not sure. And separately mindset is already a part of the enabler skills.
I would think self-regulation is about how you reflect on your learning skills/abilities, how you learn to learn, evaluate your learning progress and habits continuously. If it was a fitness program instead of a learning program it would be like how do you know you are following the program you set out to do, how do you evaluate how well the program works, how do you keep track of your nutrition, exercise statistics, how do you measure progress, set goals, stick to goals, how well can you sustain your motivation when things get tough.
You know dr justin, when you mention about train deep processing it reminds me about jasson padget who got savant syndrome after terrible accident.Jasson padget is a normal person with not good deep processing before accident he took in head. Then, with the example of jasson padget, could you give me some steps for banging my head or make accident in my head so that i could get increasing my deep processing? (Bercyanda ku bercyanda)
Notes those ideas to make videos on in the future. In the mean time, here is a video that covers the topic of interleaving: ua-cam.com/video/ZFyPMRzPNTE/v-deo.html
Most of my life I've just studied the day before the test or the week before, basically memorized and forgot after the test week and got like 10% or less questions wrong... At some point in high school I thought "There's no difference between archiving a high score and just passing the tests right? I only need the title"....I only need the minimum required effort. Thinking that lowered by scores from 95% to 70-75% (70 is the least you can get in my country, a central American one)... It's been hard for me to get rid of that mediocre mindset, it's been 10 years... I tried to study at a nursing college but I was too afraid to make a mistake here since it could affect another person's life or even my license, so i dropped at the last semester of my career. Now I'm trying to get my head around networking but... it's hard for me to even being to study, I do like what I'm trying to study but it's hard for me to sit down and when I do I feel overwhelmed at the first minutes and I don't know why, once I get past that terrible feeling it actually been kind of easy to learn... I think I do have a mindset problem and I think I shackled myself too bad to get out of by myself or my own methods. I found this channel by mere chance last night, I'll try to change this mindset one way or another... It's been so frustrating and I feel like a decade long failure, I want change.
@justinsung I took the Learner Type quiz and my learner type is Spark. Have you renamed the learner types from those mentioned in the video above--unchained, sprout, trooper, and Karp?
Take my Learner Type free quiz to figure out your learning strengths and weaknesses: bit.ly/4dYKX3T
You'll also get a personalised report at the end with recommendations for what to work on to improve your learning efficiency as quickly as possible.
Where is the quiz? I don't see it when I press on that link.
@JustingSung, Is the link still working? I am a working professional and would like to explore more techniques.
1. Deep processing: ability to think critically, connect ideas and understand complex concepts
2. Self regulation: mastery and adaptation of learning techniques and self-awareness of using the right strategy for the right task
3. Mindset: attitude toward failure and experimentation
How I think about it:
Raw Brain Power
Technique
Your Psychology
Nobody gonna talk about how smooth that pen flicking was of Justin 🔥 6:44

I really really admire what you are doing
Why don't you write a book that you explain the full picture inside of your head about learning
I still got “other” but it’s entirely possible I am just a weirdo!
The page didn't load for me at all.
Why's that? What do I do?
I just did the test and it gave me other... I gave my email for nothing 😶
I still appreciate the video, though.

Wooww...you're so cool bro. Tq for this, needmuch
I learn more from the comments when it comes to this guy's channel 🤣🤣
You're changing and saving lives. Thank you for still uploading and sharing what you have synthesized for the rest of us.

Karp 🙋 starting uni next autumn and I've decided it's time to learn how to learn instead of just relying on raw talent to get me through this

Great video as always sir... thank you so much
I appreciate the content you bring to this channel! Immensely valuable!

Thank you so much! That was helpful to understand better my struggles the results were that I am the Unchained type
Glad it could help, and give you direction on how you improve your learning skills!
I want those last two dimensions, so here’s me best guess.
Retrieval practice is your strategy to memorize things.

Please do an in-depth video on the conceptual framework of learning/dimensions of learning
11:24 great point about technique.🙌🏾 I see that as a stepping stone to getting reallly good for the long haul
Thank u so much for offering free tools from ur paid program. Even a small sample is better then no knowledge at all.
No worries, the team and I are constatly working our hardest to provide higher and higher quality value and education for free!!

Dear algorithm, this channel is awesome. That is all.
You rock!
Thank you, Justin and the team, for the great video! I took the free test and got "other" so I started thinking would it be possible to share the full test for a fee, separate from the rest of the course?
He commented on this video (probably right after your comment) that the quiz had a bug making Other 10X more frequent, so try taking it again.
@@TheQuark6789 oh, thanks for letting me know!
commenting rn to positively influence your fate and quality of life, doctor! Keep up the good work and make sure to rest well.
Can you please make a video on how we can train and develop our deep processing habits?
It wasn’t until I got to college that I had to learn how to study. I felt deflated in the beginning of college because before college, I was able to grasp materials while in class without opening my texbooks.
I almost never comment in all my life of youtube, but please make more videos like this, it really helps alot
Thanks for the comment, and I will do my best to continue making more videos like this!
@@JustinSung If you could make a video describing the structure of learning for students with higher order learning, you have already told us alot about priming and then making mindmaps, and past papers (which I have been using for a few days and it is amazing ) but if you could tell us when and how to do the retrieval practices and in what time intervals it would be a complete package
Thank you!
@@supergrandmaster3209You ain't a grand master are you?

6:44 Slickest pen twirl I've seen in my entire life 👀
I can't be the only one replaying it over and over... right?
What’s your opinion on active learning? Like Quizlet, etc.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Can’t wait to join your program! Just waiting for the next window to open up!
Thanks for these videos, I am starting the university next month and I am considering to buy an ipad for taking notes and improve my workflow. I have always achieved great notes but my way of study is not quite optimal, with these videos I try to follow your steps in order to find the best study flow.
Also do a video on the last two dimensions! Great video
Hello Dr.Justin sung,
im truly impressed by the depth of insight provided in this video ,Your expertise in this area is truly valuable, and I believe that it would be incredibly beneficial for many individuals if you were to consider authoring a book or a series of books on these subjects.
Best regards
Your student 🤘
Please make a video on Learning Styles please
Hello Dr.Sung, please add this video at the start of the playlist you showed at the end…
Thank you Dr Sung for adding it to the playlist…😌
When it comes to the mindset part, I SO HIGHLY RECOMMEND, the book Mindset by Carol S. Dweck.
This book looks into how mindset changes everything, and how you can learn the growth mindset, and I will absolutely say ever since I have read this book, it has improved my thinking as a student exponentially.
Not only that tho this is just such a good book overall and helps for many aspects in life that require mindset
This is a life changing video full of knowledge. Hopefully I can apply and grow more about it. New subscriber here.
Awesome thanks so so much man.........
I like how you use research! Where do you get your research articles? I’m interested in reading then
This is an absolutely unique but the most interesting video.
I love your videos all of them actually so thank you ,but please don’t use loud music and a lot of different sounds for editing it’s so distracting.
Which is better vocalizing something to memorize or just processing something to memorize?
The penflip in 6:44 was crazy 🔥
I really appreciate what he is doing.
Thank you, I appreciate your comment
I truly needed a video like this
Lots of people did haha
@@JustinSung Wo-hoo! Thank you for answering me and for the heart :)
To concluded the conclusion 😅 in my understanding Change the idea of "I can't into How can?". Try some diff. Method that resonate with you and leave what it doesn't our brain need some mapping but don't be fixated about it learn to use some imagination to expand and grow even better 😅
Wow it is each an eye opener
try the quiz twice, both times the result was Unchained. i wish i knew effective methods at all so i can learn all the things i want. I think im trap in the circle of wanting to improve and not nowing effective ways to learn in a consistens manner o learning at all
same bro.
commenting for algorithm to make this chanell more popular
So the quiz was why the video was late. Good work as always! A bit disappointed to get the other result though, I want to have a label :v
I would like to see a video about learning styles, please
What do you mean by Self Management?
Do you use it in a casual way or it has different meaning? How could someone assess he is good at self management or not and the ways to improve it ?
It is so helpful for me
Great video.
I love what you've done with editing🎉
😊 thank you
thanks a lot for this video. Very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Also had a great day
Please provide the info for Sparks
AMAZING video, I am deeply grateful:)))
Thank you Justin for all your videos :)
No worries!
I can't seem to access the quiz with the link you provided
I took the free quiz and it showed that I am in the other category
I got the other too.
In the video he says is more of a spectrum than a black and white thing
Pov me: hey, i have the spark learner type,
It seems to have all three
Also me: *AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!!!!*
Is there a way to test where your deep processing skill lies? That is, a way to measure how good your deep processing skills are?
I am curious to know my learning type am in others😂😂😂 when is the next video??? Plus what's your type Justin?
Great video. I want to hear about Self management and Retrieval Practice too.
Notes those ideas to make videos on in the future.
In the mean time, here is a video that covers the topic of interleaving: ua-cam.com/video/ZFyPMRzPNTE/v-deo.html
Great work
Tysm for this
Most of my life I've just studied the day before the test or the week before, basically memorized and forgot after the test week and got like 10% or less questions wrong...
I hit the like button and even better I subscribed to your channel.
Thank you so much❤🎉
You’re welcome 😊

Hello Dr Justin
I was hoping if you would recommend a book for us that can help us understand more about learning
Thank You
Love this
@justinsung I took the Learner Type quiz and my learner type is Spark. Have you renamed the learner types from those mentioned in the video above--unchained, sprout, trooper, and Karp?
