  • Video 3 in the Vexus AVX1980 review for the Great Tin Boat Search of 2022, so before you buy a new or used aluminum (I call them tin) boat, make sure and watch this! Today is the 6th video in the series, so far we have reviewed the G3 Sportsman 1810 powered by a 4 stroke Yamaha 115. Today we tackle the Vexus AVX 1980 powered by the Mercury 4 Stroke 150. We will review a bunch of tin boats over the course of this review, including Ranger, Xpress, Lund, Polar Craft, Crestliner, SeaArk, Tracker, Gator Trax, Avid, and whatever else you guys come up with and help me find.
We are not going to start grading the boats until we have reviewed several so we have a good sense of what should be expected in a $30,000 - $40,000 aluminum boat. And YES, we know some of these are higher than that, and we will discuss when we review the more expensive boats, so stay tuned!

2 inch dow corning foam cut to fit the lid gets the insulation part done on the ice chest. Simple and works well.
I’m sure insulating that lid is on a Vexus list some were..
The charger cord hooked to the rear deck lid is another peeve. Vexus needs to install a plug at the rear of the boat or at the console to plug the charger into. I added a NOCO plug at the console. Cord drops from my ceiling in the garage straight down to the plug.
As is, Drop the cord into the battery compartment and its a PITA to get back out.
Some will say they boats are under powered. As you have seen the boat plan quickly and ride very well. They cruise very well in that 30 to 40 mph range were you run most of the time. Could they use more top end speed. Everyone always wants to go faster. IMHO the 1880 should have a 150. The 1980 a 175 or 200 and the 2080 should have a 250.
Vexus would OWN the aluminum boat market at that point.
Vexus Customer service is the bench mark as far as i’m concerned. Best in the business!
    Great review Ken.

In a tin boat ajust trim slowly in small Increments...... alow for the rpms to peak
    ( to there highest rpm)
For some reason it takes a tin boat longer to adjust....you can also feel it the steering wheel..
When the weel starts to become easier to move to the left you'll know at that time you are on propper plain... ( less boat in the water = easier to the left steering )

Yes, Lead Sled! It's under powered. A 20' Bullet with a 150 will run 68 Plus and weigh less. Great quality boat tho...

Yes, great boats, Vexus. However- 50 mph with a v6 pro XS? What a lead sled! I mean- most old 18' fiberglass pad hulls will run out at 58-60 with a 150 efi. Even with a prop change and engine height adjustment maybe, 53/54? Shallow water advantage is all anyone will get from an aluminum. Maybe some fuel milage . Great job Ken! I'm catching this video series a little late since I didn't know you even did aluminum reviews. So much for the notification bell.

Good review. I have the 2021 Vexus 1980. You said you did not like the cooler because it was not insulated. However I live in Texas and fish In the 100 plus heat and the cooler is outstanding. I have ice at the end of a long day of fishing. I went to the plant for a tour during my build and it is insulated well. You should take the tour you would be impressed.

I would add my 1980 is the easiest boat to load I've had. Even in heavy cross wind and current it will center up perfectly. Maybe it was just that shallow ramp he was at as I usually have the top of the fender out of water. And yes you being a glass guy you have to get use to that bow drift. Got mine last year 80 hrs on big motor mainly fish Mississippi River no problems other than I did let a tree remove that vexus lettering lol

Just caught up on the tin rig series. Running a tin rig myself but in a jet application. I seen you stated a few times about how to rate some of these tin rigs.
Being in the jet boat world, where we run in sub 6" of water you can imagine some of the stress we put on them. Especially when you get into the 200-300HP engines.
    Things to consider:
Hull - is it one piece bottom or 2 piece split with the keel being used to join the two halves, is it foam injected, how is the bracing (longitude or cross or a mix of longitudinal and cross bracing), what kind of "hull bottom", modified, pad, semi v, is the bottom of the hull ribbed, flat, stepped
Hull thickness - personally I never recommend anything under 100ga if you run shallow. Under 100ga stress cracks, dents, dings and everything in between is really easy to happen, also the thicker the hull the better at times. Obviously thicker hulls are more resistant to dings and dents but harder to repair when you do ding it or dent it
All welded construction - no screws holding anything in when it comes to joining metals, obviously there is some leeway with this but if it's structural it should be welded.
Transom construction - how many knee braces, how thick/large are they, do they wrap over the top of the transom, is it wood filled or not (generally this should not be wood filled, also this is generally the area in which wood is used in a tin boat, to add strength here), how is the corner gussets constructed (30 inches long, 16 inches long, do they extend from the corner to the engine), if it's got a "splash guard" like most bass boat style do how is this constructed, is it welded to the transom and rear deck tying the transom to the deck, for the most part all cracks or stress issues or problems for tin boats occur at the transom due to the stress put on them
Bow - is the cap re-enforced for trolling motor, is it all welded or partial, is it tied into the front deck, if so is it welded, screwed, riveted (welded being the best, screws being the worst)
Balance - is weight distribution good or bad, with tin boats being light if you don't have weight distribution equal you will notice it running down the lake/river, it'll lean one way or the other, can make a difference in shallow water running, speed, MPG, this is more jet boat oriented how does it sit in the water is it rear heavy or nose heavy, can make a difference in getting on plain, how well it handles in turns, nose heavy will want to drop hard and have a speer like effect, run slower, worse mpg to a degree, will turn faster, run shallower, less chance in having the "swapping effect", rear heavy will run deeper, take longer to get on plain, easier to swamp, turn slower, the nose will have a floating like effect, will run faster, better mpg to a degree
IMO outside of costs, tin has a better value to most users for the following reasons:
Light weight - easy to tow, easy to maneuver, easier to handle
Longevity - I think tin boats and glass boats if cared for are the same to a degree, it really just depends on how old you are talking about, a tin boat 20 years old can be in better condition than a glass boat with minimal care, a glass boat can fade over time or run into rot if not cared for
Durability - both glass and tin have come a long way here but IMO if you factor in constant abuse and you have a boat built really stout I think tin just edges out glass but not by much maybe a hairs width
Repairs - this is the big one that not a lot of people talk about, if you take out all the stress cracking or old age issues and just look at a glass boat and a tin boat and run them both into a tree and rip a hole in it for the most part a glass boat is totaled and done, you maybe able to find someone who might attempt a repair but you have to find a fiberglass shop that does fantastic work otherwise it would be a waste. For the tin boat, yea it maybe totaled as well but just about every dig, dent, and hole can be filled by any decent aluminum welder, I've seen photos on boats ran into trees and had the bow wrinkled 2ft back and they just weld on some pulleys and start working the metal out and where it can't be worked anymore just cut it off and weld in a replacement. Prime example: I ran a MK Terrova on my tin rig and made a mistake when mounting it, eventually it cracked and busted up the bow cap pretty bad. Just took it into the shop and had them weld on a new cap and double reinforced it so I wouldn't make the same mistake again. If it was a glass boat that would've been a pricey repair to have fixed let alone trying to reinforce it would probably not work.

I can confirm your comment on keeping on plane at low speeds in rough water. Ran my local lake 3-3.5 foot waves, 20-ish mph backing off/getting on it riding the waves. Never felt unsafe - did get a little wet pending the wind. Opened up plenty of fishing spots to me on windy days that I wouldn't have tried with my old boat.

My Tracker 195 TXW also had some failing welds where the hull meets with the transom. The boat was going to be shipped back to Tracker for warranty repairs because the gas tank needed to be removed prior to welding and would be gone for at least 3 months. The service clerk at the Garland BassPro knew of a business, I think it was up near Lewisville, and they would be able to do the welding without needing to remove the gas tank. I was without a boat for only 1 week. So you might want to relay to the other Tracker boat owner to call the Garland BassPro Tracker service desk and see what the name of the business that did the welding on my boat.
