I always knew in the back of my mind there was another version of this song to Linda and Neville's version. I remember hearing it in the 80s as a young kid but once Linda and Aaron's version came out I never heard this version again. It been like a splinter in my brain. So today since 37 years later I googled it and here I am. 🙂😎

Wow I've always loved the Neville Ronstadt duet but honestly hearing this original for the first time made me teary. His sincerity and the simple arrangement is very moving and emotional.
Besides, he’s the songwriter together with his wife Cynthia Weil and Tom Snow. Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt did such a great job in the cover, which was a worldwide success. The original version had only been a minor US hit. Of course, one is always biased towards the version one first heard. Like you, I’ve just heard this version for the very first time. I’ve known and loved the Neville and Ronstadt duet for over 30 years without knowing that it wasn’t the original version. Although Neville and Ronstadt are probably better vocalists than Barry Mann - and even though a duet gives the song greater appeal - there must have been something about the original performance that attracted the two singers to cover it. And you and I have felt that something after just one listen.

This version sounded more sincerely like a single man going through his tough time falling in love with someone. I love this version. Aaron Neville express his feeling deeply is his duet cover with Linda Ronstadt..beautifully!

Amazing songwriting couple; they've always been my favorites. Met them at the Bottom Line in NYC in the 80s. Very gracious. Called them "the Puccini's of pop') They laughed.

Just learned about this today. Obviously the Neville/Ronstadt cover is more well-known, and I won't get into which is "better" but I will say I appreciate the stripped down sincerity of this original version.
