Why the Terrigen Crystals often don't kill humans on Agents of SHIELD

  • In short, only one small subset of Terrigen Crystals, the ones artificially created in Afterlife from a melted down Diviner harm humans, as a result of being contaminated with the metal of the Diviner (which is fatal to humans). All other Terrigen Crystals you will see on the show are COMPLETELY HARMLESS to humans.
If you pay attention, there is also a distinct visual difference between standard and contaminated Crystals.

I feel bad for Jiaying, because her past is really bad, I could understand why she hates humans in the story line.

She lived in a village of humans for decades while they willingly sacrificed their lives so she could live. To me it was a dumb way to get rid of her.

@@NPClownumber81googolplex I don’t really think she was ever a likable character. She sorta came in from out of nowhere, kind of a dull character, and she kills Gonzalez and ruins the inhuman’s good relationship with shield for no apparent reason. Forgive me if the relationship isn’t completely ruined, but I liked Gonzalez. He was a cool character and it does not feel like much effort was put into his death scene. After that scene I couldn’t stand to watch the show anymore.

@@NPClownumber81googolplex it just felt like betraying shield like that was such an abysmally stupid decision, I don’t truly believe that Jiaying would be that much of a dumbass. That one scene ruined her entire character for me, while at the same time it kills off a good one.

Yeah No, that doesn't give you the right to be a murderer. Gonzalez was offering nothing but peace to her and she turns him into stone. She was a terrible person who deserved what she got, which was being killed by Cal.

They couldn't separate the metal from the crystals... except when it fell into the ocean. They seriously didnt even try to dissolve it in water.

Do take into account Jaiyang’s hate for humans. If she had known, she wouldn’t have cared. She’d see it as a backup plan for weeding out humans among their ranks

In conclusion, it’s only the metal of the Diviner itself that is lethal to humans. The Terrigen crystal itself, hidden inside the Diviner, is not lethal to humans, and will also change inhumans. Even a human can pickup a pure Terrigen crystal and not be harmed. But the Terrigen crystals that Jaiying grew by melting a Diviner had the metal laced within the crystal which is still deadly to regular humans. But once it was washed out by the ocean, it would only cause a transformation in potential inhumans.

Exactly. In Season 3 Bobbi and Hunter kept swallowing fish oil pellets to see if they would get Inhuman powers. They were not worried about petrification because there was no diviner metal in the ocean. They eventually realized they were human with no Inhuman DNA.

Trip died because he kicked the crystal and the metal shards hit him. If Trip actually waited more than 5 seconds he wouldn't have died. I feel the producers killed him off because Coulson's team only had room for 1 black guy.

It would have been an awesome twist if they had made trip an Inhuman with the power of invisibility or something of that nature. God, that would have been awesome and a cool way to advance the character.

The reason they don't always kill humans is because some humans on AOS carry a specific genetic marker (I like to call it the inhuman or terrigen gene).

Right. That's why they turn. My point is that humans don't *die* when exposed to the crystals, unless it's the one batch of contaminated crystals from Afterlife. (There are points in the show where humans touch uncontaminated crystals and don't die and a lot of people, misremembering the lore, think that's an error. It's not.)

Like how when daisy and Raina went through terrigennises trip only turned to stone because he got hit by the obelisk when it was shattered Jiaying melted shard of the obelisk and put Terrigen mixed with the shard and put it to the shape of a crystal and even before daisy went through the mist on episode 18 of season 1 lumely said that the 0-8-4 was daisy and that she had powers but she didn’t get those powers until she went through the mist so that doesn’t make any sense
