Absolutely brilliant. I can’t see there being many other guitar tutors attempting this. Well done.
Ricky Wilson was so brilliant and died way too early and tragically. Thank you for not only creating and sharing such a wonderful lesson, Adrian, but also for shining some highly deserved light on Ricky Wilson’s innovative and memorable musicianship.
He is absolutely a criminally underrated guitar player, the band is too 👏👏
I don't think I can be arsed to take the middle strings off my guitar, but watching you play this is brilliant! Well done
One of the most badass guitar riffs ever written 🤘🏼
Finally. Some OG Ricky Wilson love, man was a superb guitarist and had some of the catchiest, unusual riffs of all time, was recently named as one for the greatest guitar players by rolling stone too, not that it’s a credible source but still I’m glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves.
My daughter request Rock Lobster almost everyday on the way home from daycare, it has made me a very proud father! Now I intend to make my daughter very proud of her father…. Thanks!
One of my all time favorite riffs is "Own Private Idaho". Mr Wilson is perhaps underappreciated.
You nailed it, Adrian, great job!!
I think the biggest reason he tuned like this was there wasn't a bass guitarist in the band. You had Keith on drums, Fred vocals, Kate on keyboards, Cindy doing her thing and then Ricky holding it all together.
Kate Pierson on
Organ and
Rhodes Bass Keyboard .
The drummer now guitarist used to break his strings when Ricky was teaching him how to play it in the early years of their career, don’t know if that had anything to do with him finding his style of playing but they didn’t have replacement strings out at what is now called the love shack where they hung out with not much money or anything else really.
@@transmissionggb2820You're right, the Drummer (Keith Strickland) handed a guitar with a broken string over to Ricky and suggested that Ricky try some sort of open tuning. That's how I heard it said from one of the band members, probably Keith.
The tunings, so far as I know, are Ricky's ideas, though. Some of the songs on the first album aren't even in the standard 440 Hz, either, they're slightly sharp and are in either 444 or 445 hz. This one's one of them.
Footnote; Ricky's Guitar Tech, Bennett, also shared the same first name as Strickland. So there was Keith Strickland the drummer, and Keith Bennett the Guitar Tech. Bennett later married Ricky's sister, Cindy.
I've honestly never given the B-52's a chance, and had no idea that their guitarist had such an innovative and avant garde style until looking in to this song. Definitely going to give their debut album a try!
One of my favorite guitarists! Please do more B-52’s
**quietly puts guitar back in its case and walks away**
Absolutely amazing.
Brilliant! Has echoes of Joy Division and The Cure. But lighter.
Hats off to you. I've been trying to play this in standard tuning for ages. You are a great tutor and an inspiration 👏
Excellent tutorial. I always thought he used a baritone guitar but this is an eye opener. Those first two B52 albums were magic!
for me the “floppy” strings actually add to the sonic character needed for this song!
Thanks mate. Brilliant lesson. Love this record. Dance This Mess Around such an amazing song also
Thank you for laying down the mysteries of this classic jam so well & with so much expertise & care! CFxxFF, what a freaking tuning, I'd like to try to transpose some Ventures tunes to this & see how they go!
Rickie Wilson, creative genius. Great rendition, Adrian, thanks
Never dreamt how this was played, though I've always loved it. Brilliant, thanks Adrian.
Wow - What a great breakdown of this absolutely iconic song! I knew that there were several strings missing, and that the bottom strings were downtuned, but I never realised in all these decades that the top two strings were both tuned to F as well... Here is me struggling to work out some of those higher bits for years (and then ignoring them hoping they would go away), and you've come along to tell us exactly how it was done - Thank You!
Rick Wilson was brilliant. This video is sensational. If you can, do tutorials with other B52's songs. Legal tender, Private Idaho, Strobe light, Give me back my man, etc.
Such wonderful weirdness, expertly played. As many others have said, the guitarists and songs you explore are always a breath of fresh air and a joy to watch and listen to. Thank you!
Love this, my attempt didn't get the tuning right - thanks! 53 Miles West Of Venus is another killer Ricky Wilson guitar song, I would love to see a lesson on that. My favourite guitar players are Hendrix, Niles Rogers and Ricky Wilson.
Classic Rock Lobster. There goes a Narwhal !
I really enjoy your tutorials...and you are skilled player...but it's your unassuming approach that I appreciate the most.
Go you for exploring this track. Ricky is an unsung GTR HERO!
Just to add, there's some black and white footage of them playing this in about 75/76 that sounds perfect. Proof that Ricky didn't need overdubs. Genius guitarist and a great loss to the world of music.
A guitarist, and band, in a genre of one, the play out on this track is one of the most exciting garage sounds ever
Sounds almost identical to me, fantastic rendition. I read he used a Veillette Citron Shark baritone on some of that LP. I found this out when I found an identical guitar at an auction a few years back.
I've been trying to get my band to play this for the longest time. Great job. I managed to play this close enough by only detuning the 5th and 6th strings. I leave the rest alone
I’ve been listening to this since 1979 (don’t ask my age), and you effing nailed it!!!!! Thank you for the trip!!!
Few could’ve done this as well as you. Fascinating lesson even if I’ll never get around to such a massive string renovation.
Wow, this was my first black vinyl..........an awesome SONG!
Extraordinarily cool left-of-the-dial songs taught extraordinarily well.
You deliver some of the most consistently high quality content on UA-cam.
Aw man, this brings so much joy…..
Great video, one of the most innovative and fascinating guitarists of the new wave era, and boy could he write a riff. The live recording of this song from around 1979 thats on youtube is absolutely immense, an incredible performance, up there with Paranoid Android or One Armed Scissor, both from Jools Holland.
Thanks, Adrian. You've got impeccable taste in guitarists and their unique styles. Great lesson!
This was spot on. Thanks friend
Smashed it Adrian!!!
Even had cowbell!!
Was unaware of Ricky Wilson now I can add him to my list with Link Wray thanks to you Adrian.
It’s crazy too cause Ricky modified his guitar so he could use bass strings for those low notes. And so like he still had strung tension even after tuning so far down and that really effects the sounds and makes his playing even more difficult replicate.
I love Ricky Wilson and am glad you did a video of this classic
Awesome. I was in secondary school when this album came out. I still have it. Always wanted to play it and knew it was a funky set up so I never tackled it.
Great show! You continue to astound me by your playing and song selection. I don't think I'll tune to F or whatever he's done but fun to check this one out. Thanks!
The B52s mastered that early to mid 60s American rock sound
Always loved this song. Awesome, thank you.
interesting tuning. love the song. thank you for the lesson
Absolutely fantastic! Top notch.
What an oddball banger! I just went looking for this one recently. Great timing, thanks!
Nice job, I've played the four string a few times trying to figure this one out.
Great ears and great research!
Great groove...impressive detective work
Dude absolutely awesome mate! And what a track! 😎👍🏻
Dude i love your channel you pick some awesome songs! Can you please do an au pairs lesson? Anything on their first album really! I know you could nail it, and im having trouble figuring it out
Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks
Wow ! U nailed it !! That is just so much fun, brilliant job as always !!
Just wow, never would have guessed the tuning was so out there.
Amazing, I was just thinking about you doing this last week!
Thank you for this Adrian!
I have to thank you for this one as I have been looking for a long time for a good video on Ricky Wilson’s style of playing and it’s tricky to tune in but I have one guitar with the strings off the middle and ready to go and it’s great fun.
Thank you! You always pick great songs and often ones that many wouldn't touch.
Wow! Very impressive! You nailed that!
Hmm, I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy a baritone guitar. Thanks!
So many guitarists from back in the day are said to be underrated nowadays when they actually aren’t/weren’t, but Ricky is one of the exceptions to that trend IMO.
Great song and lots of fun! Cool alternate tunings too!
Great stuff Adrian
Thanks again Adrian.
Nowhere else can I get Guitar lessons on my favourite tracks from my late teens early twenties.
a song that always make me smile - brilliant adrian
Great job big guy. Thanks for sharing this. We were all mesmerised as kids when it was released. Fun times
Wow, that's pretty damn crazy! Love it, and nice job recreating it.
great playthrough section!!
Awesome. Love it. This song, that I performed on a keyboard with a guitar plugin (for a remix contest), made me start learning guitar.
That was really cool. So fun!
Thank you for doing the legwork! I have loved this song since it came out. Ricky Wilson was always a favorite of mine...I never figured CF-FF. That's just weird and wonderful. Just to note, I believe he palm muted the opening just a little. Probably to create more impact once the song opened up. He was great in such a simple way, and you did right by him! Love it!
Outstanding!
That’s insane. Well done.

this!
PLEASE let's see more of Ricky Wilson style..🤞?
Fascinating lesson, thank you 🙏.
Fabulous! Thank you!!
Yay! Adrian, you are such a diamond!
this is one I've thought about attempting myself, Ricky Wilson was a genius to come up with these parts. It's almost like playing a bass
c, f, nil, nil, f, f... At first, I thought "a 4-string guitar?" but I was wrong. It's two 2-string guitars! The "water on the smoke" bit midway through the song is also quite a lark. All in all... Mind=blown!
I didn't know i wanted to learn this until seeing your play through
Definitely going to have to learn this one asap
Great vid as always mate, by far my most favourite guitar tutorial channel. Everything you do sounds so much like the originals. Any chance of doing Roam by the B52's? My favourite track of theirs
Squire JM..... original pups in that? Nice work once again.....loved it.
Excellent !
YESSSSSS hanging out for this one.
Nice diving into one of the most singular, different guitar player ever
I grew up listening to those first few albums. I like the yellow one and the red one I can't remember the name. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. I'm trusting in nothing but the blood of Jesus to pay for my sins to keep me out of hell. You have a good taste for the reverb stuff. I just discovered Takeshi Terauchi and I feel like I could just listen to his albums for the rest of my life LoL This is killer thank you!
So VERY cool!
This made my day, always loved this tune,, no friggin wonder I thought it was difficult, I couldn’t even get the tuning right.🤨 but I knew they were quite an eccentric band more so by the guitarist they had, anyway, I vote this best guitar tuition channel on youtube,, cheers mate.
Amazing.
Brilliant Adrian
HELL YES OPEN UP THE PIT
Brilliant!
Legend, thank you
I just asked my teacher to teach me some B 52s! The best!
Brilliant song choice!! Next a GbV song, please ;)
I love this song and just play it an octave up on the main riff because I didn't want to re-string my guitar.
Keep in mind the pitch isn't standard A 440 Hz. I believe it's 432 Hz but I haven't verified that myself.
