starting at 8:39 you click on a bunch of stuff that results in it bringing up overlays showing the claims. how did you do that? i mean to get that map shown at 9:43. that looks really useful but i have no idea how to get to it. thanks for posting but this video leaves me with way more questions than answers. has anyone found a more direct way to show claims on google earth?
How would I do what you did by having a graph and the menu on the side? Great information on what to do, but how do you even get to this point ? Like how would I input information from BLM to google earth like you have along with graphing and colors ?
I seems that the BLM web page has changed since the video was posted. Can you offer some assistance in getting to the correct page to look up the townships?
great info .very helpful, heading towards ancho nm. great placer claims there but its been 15yrs .gpaa, had some active,so now I can check to see if there expired .thks jeff h
Awesome! This is exactly the information I was looking for. I've done some prospecting up by Wellsville and Swissvale. Not much luck because the Arkansas river was raging. I did notice Badger creek has a Federal claim posted.
I am coming to Colorado next year to look at a few claims, and would like to see you and talk, I like your videos I am new to prospecting and and need all the help I can get.
Thanks for making these great google earth videos! I've watched this one about ten times. I have a question for you. I can get info on a claim down to the quadrant of a section, but how do I know where in that quadrant the claim lies? For instance an LR2000 report will say 08s 78w sec31 NE, 20 acres. I cant figure out where that 20 acres is within the 160 acres of the NE quadrant of sec31.
Unfortunately, the LR2000 only goes down to 160 acres. So if there is a 20 acre plot in that 160, the only way I know of to find the EXACT location is to contact the BLM office in your state. In Colorado, you can just call them with the serial number of the claim in question and they will let me know. Or, if you visit the BLM office in your state, you can ask to see actual mine claim paperwork. It costs 10 cents per copy and since you are accessing a public record, you have to record your name and address on a sheet of paper that is then put in the mining claim paperwork showing you accessed that record. We have had a string of nice days here, and that means lots of work for me. But I want to help you out with this best I can, here is my email address: straydogmining@gmail.com.
I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how you came up with a location for 20 acres that you plotted on GE. I wish you had included this information in the video. Overall it was very informative! Thank you very much!
How would I gain access to areas to prospect that are blocked by a gate? logging roads here in Washington are the only way to access this land and they all have gates.... Please advise. Thank you
Hi, great video! is there an equivalent system for canada? Also. when does a placer claim become a lode claim? how much excavation can be done or the maximum amount before a placer has to be reclassified or re-claimed as a LODE claim? thanks
hi, This video was very informative, have you done the video on "Survey Plats" yet?, if so what was it called. I can't seem to find it. also me and a friend would like to prospect near Willits CA. so I'm trying to figure all of this out a.s.a.p. thank you very much, any more good info like this is very much appreciated. thanks sincerely, Jesse.
I noticed in California some of the areas are purple but most are red. do you know if the purple areas mean public access ? I know there are a couple areas that are designate to public panning.
why some claims are in triangle shape overay? i see on minecatch website. isn't there a standard square shape claims? how do you end up with a triangle when meridian, township, section... are square?
Nicely done. I'm kind of old school and used to papers instead of electrons. This new tech can be useful if you know what buttons to push. There is another circumstance you didn't mention though. When people acquired land by homesteading, it rarely came with the mineral rights. Therefore you can own the land, but not have legal access to the minerals beneath. In fact, a third party can in some cases file on the mineral rights beneath your private property. Before they do, they must notify you though. If that ever happens to you, just file a mining claim first. That is why you CAN have an active mining claim on private property in rare circumstances. Keith
I have been trying to map some claims, and can't follow how you imported the info from the BLR LR2000 reports to Google Earth and then had them highlight the location to show the active claims in red. Any additional tips?
***** yes sir, you are correct! The feds require all four corners be marked. Colorado says 4 ft stake, 1 ft deep. 3 foot high from ground. Do not use plastic, only metal or natural materials. The also say pile of rocks is ok, since some claims can be on rocky terrain, at least up here. thanks for the question!
+Stray Dog Crew kinda ugly but so helpfull so a stack of rocks instead of a sign some counties do prefer to just pick up the boddies. ty great vid please make more.
I tried your description and just got led to some really odd sites. It may just be all the new clutter on the internet or the description addresses may have changed or moved. You make it look so easy...I know you've done this a few times but still... Then again I am a newbie at looking up anything related to the BLM. I am most interested in Central Idaho so could you send me some links I could follow to do just what you've done here in this video. Once I learn how to look up in Idaho I can then use that knowledge and look at neighboring states. Thanks for considering my humble request.
Great video! Thank you so much. Exactly what I was looking for. Simple step by step. It is except how do I get BLM/land mgmt maps into My Places (like you)??
hi, i enjoyed the video and would like to create my own plot map for my adventures.. it would be great to find out how to get the public lands survey system overlay on the google earth side bar.. any help would be great
You said you document where the claims are at..then you open the folder. And presto ..there's the claims on google earth color coded. Seems the most important part was left out. How did you download to document the claims in google earth? I'm sure its something simple for those in the know.
I know this is an old comment, but for the sake of clarity... 12:16 At the end of the video, he demonstrates how he colors the plots with polygons, and how he associates info about the claim with it, saving it all to a folder. Each red and green polygon was created and saved in this manner. What we see is the end result of this effort.
In the legal description it will say the South half of, or the North half of the parcel being described. (The north half of the southwest quarter of Section 8...)
Very helpful video, I will probably have some questions for you, right now I have to go to work. But I am very interested in this topic, thanks for the info.
If you are going to prospect a particular location, its always a good idea to call the BLM for that region. They have all the claims on file and can quickly tell you if you are good to go, or not. hope this helps!
So since you can't locate which 40 acre section within that 160 acre section someone has claimed... are you just making an educated guess when you are plotting these on Google Earth with that polygon tool and assigning colors to them etc? If that's the case your map could be quite a bit off and you could end up panning on someone else's claim don't you think? Maybe (hopefully) I'm missing something here...
John W Yes, it is a guessing game for the research end. Before I physically go out, I like to call the BLM to verify the location I am going to. When I visit the location, I look for claim markers as well. In Alaska, the BLM database reports the EXACT location of claims to prevent confusion and claim jumping, but Colorado is not so detailed.
No you are right! If the claim is recorded correctly you will sometimes have a second page to click down on the file report for a mining claim or get a reference on the claim report like SESW or ESESW... However in many cases you just get a SW. Many people use commas which divide up sections but are still using the aliquot system of recording a 20 acre placer claim. If a mining claim is filed correctly in aliquot and match the map you will have the mining claim files that are stated (ESESW) That is East half of the South East South West 1/4's. If you use commas it will mean South East & South West 1/4's And will not match up on the map. However this is a common error people make when filing & is usually overlooked. So if a mining claim file report has SE,SW that should mean South East & South West 1/4's. However in reality it probably means the South East South West 1/4's of section. As you can imagine the many issues this creates for the BLM and the prospector. Lol... But like i said is a very common issue so you will usually just get the larger 1/4 section listed. When you see claims listed as stated above... Smile, That person really knows what he is doing and probably knows where the goods are at! Haha... PLEASE NOTE: Lesson Here...! There is NO COMMA between sections!!! The Land Examiners note a comma as an "AND" Or if you have a claim that takes up 2+ 1/4's you will also get a SW or a SE,SW Etc...! That is why you need to look for corner markers and check county maps if you are in a heavily claimed area!!! GeoCommunicator is a great system and 100X easier with all the tools at your finger tips! You can do everything+++ this guy is doing in 1/8th the time!!! Lol... This was a nice video... But a lot of extra work!!! However the files and color coding of claims was awesome!!! Also the original GeoCommunicator design idea had the mining claim maps documented also, However is sadly not used by the BLM. : ( Best Wishes.....
Mike Nichols The definitive method is to go to the county recorder's office and look at a copy of the claim notice which must have a map of the claim with distances to prominent objects or survey monuments. From that you should get close, but the claim stakes on the ground are the actual boundaries, not the description or map. In the case of a discrepancy, the monuments on the ground rule.
The BLM will also offer copies of maps filed with the COL's. However, It Would be nice if they had them scanned for review on line with the mining claim case files! I think the original LR2000 plan was to include them on the public record online but it did not work out!?
And yes... You really should be on the ground to check out an area! But its good to do all your homework first!!! Lol... Best Wishes to all... Good Luck!
Off the top of my head, I cant remember if Alaska is in the database. But Alaska has an outstanding state wide database that destroys the BLM website. I wish the other states would do what Alaska does. I think this is the link. akmining.info/
