@@joebriggs5781 I agree with you, college football brought this on themselves by not paying players for all these years. Nothing is guaranteed for these kids, play time, the nfl etc etc. So that they want guaranteed playing time (to get seen and a chance to get drafted) and make some money (that absolutely pales in comparison to what the school makes off these kids back) is not an insane request. The college system has just been so used to not having to deal with this and having all the power and control.
I'm sure we''ll see some form of college GM emerge as I do agree with this not being the coaches' issue to deal with. But coaches in college get paid a whack ton. It's insane they feel it's annoying players get compensated and will then hold out for cash.

The coaches, including Nick Saban created this problem. When college football became huge business in the 90's and 2000's. Head coaches started jumping from college to college to pros to college to college. All the while selling kids on coming to their school, knowing if a better opportunity opened up, he was bolting, and the kids were stuck and not getting paid.

I hear you and auditing is important to follow the money colleges receive. However, as a former tutor to the athletic department at the Univ of Louisville, you need to change the model so players can get compensated (I guess beyond the $40k per year in scholarship money). Aside from a few Boosters and others who skim money from the top, college athletics supports a large number of programs, infrastructure, and scholarships for other departments and losing that money could be devastating. Over thirty years ago a colleague and I proposed a system of keeping the college athlete a student and still compensate them in a trust. That compensation went to every player, not just the "stars". In addition, you would receive an extra two years of tuition, room, and board to used to finish your degree. It wasn't NIL money, but I watched major college athletics completely take over a student's time, making it hard to keep him or her in class. So, it amazes me that they have all this time to pursue NIL agreements. I would just say that destroying the idea of the "college athlete" in order to fold to the demands of the players will hurt more people than help. Compensate them, yes, but don't pretend this is the NFL.

He talked about the direction he thinks college football is trending, and he said he thinks football teams will end up creating a GM position if things stay the way they are. He mentioned that it's impossible to be a football coach now with all the demands put on coaches plates, compared to what they were being asked to do 5-10 years ago. It was also brought up the consequences of having to pay every athlete in every sport due to the current and potential future lawsuits, or that schools will end up cutting maybe 3 sports programs to fund their football and basketball programs.

Now, the top schools with rich donors can just bring a new crop of transfers in every year. So, there’s almost no way to know your standing.

As a JuCo football coach, I appreciate the number of kids I can approach to play for us, but it sucks. These kids seem to go for the money a lot then transfer out because they don't do research on how many other guys they have in their position. Now, add that to the clear concept that the NCAA wants a superconference or two and see that the non power 5 is just forgotten since the conferences will rake in money from half their teams taking playoff spots. Its all politics and it sucks.

Because there is not an infinite supply of those kids. It's not like the amount of kids changed. The *distribution of talent* is what is going to change. Talented back-ups are going to go to smaller teams to be the starter. JuCo kids are probably going to be in higher demand and will ask for less money. Kids that would normally be stuck in smaller programs like Duke or Old Dominion will get a shot at the big boys because they will be more likely to sit behind a starter.
