He invited me to attend the following summer free of fees as his personal invite. I attended the camp and was introduced to Lavelle Edwards the Head Coach at BYU and got some amazing one on one instruction from the Cincinnati Bengals kicker who had gone to BYU and finished the camp taking 1st place in the longest field goal , longest punt and closest punt to goal line. Lavelle was watching all 3 contests and talked to me with Pella final day asking if Id decided on a University to attend and if I was going to try to play football collegiatly. I hadn’t thought much about it as a Junior hoping to have an even better season and secure a third state championship in 4 years and improving my ability and strength. They told me they’d keep an eye on me , that their kicker /punter was graduating that year and told me if I maintained my averages of my junior year they could assure me a scholarship to kick at BYU with a likelihood of starting Freshman year and talked about the number of kickers that’s gone to the NFL from BYU, that I had a very promising career ahead. I was so incredibly excited and stayed in close touch with coach and the Bengals kicker training and attending his camp in spring. He said I’d improved significantly and He’ll Week began a month later. First day it was 104 degrees for our 3 a day practices and our coaches really pushed wind sprints excessively feeling like some weren’t trying hard enough . I got really dizzy 3rd practice 8th wind sprint in and my vision clouded . I didn’t quit but felt pins and needles all over and say stars . That night I woke up feeling thristy and sick went upstairs to get some water at 3 am and remembered getting to the top step and waking up at the bottom with my big brother at my side , then out and came to in the hospital. My mom was there talking to a cardiac surgeon who explained what happened and that I had a hole in the atrial valve and it was serious, I asked when I could start practice again and he said there was no way he could sign off on my heart for soccer or football , that he was sorry to inform me it was too dangerous and I wouldn’t be playing any sports for the fordeable future. I told him about BYU and he said that was no longer in my cards . Like that my dream was gone, a promising Pro career if I stayed healthy and consistent gone. I attended the University of Michigans architecture program but it hurt to not kick any more , I truly loved it.
