I left Dallas in 2002 and returned for a visit in 2012. I could hardly believe how many roads were added and expanded. Today, I'd probably get lost quite easily. Back in the mid-90s, a nice drive my wife and I enjoyed was from Irving to Cedar Hill and looping around Joe Pool Lake. Sunset drive, beautiful girl, open sunroof, cool breeze, and relaxing music. We saw some amazing lightning shows out there, as thunderstorms approached. We also got to see the Hale-Bopp comet out there, too, since it was so dark at night. Those were glorious days that I didn't appreciate nearly enough at the time. I'm guessing the population around Cedar Hill has probably grown a lot, over the past 20 years. Still, one day, I'd like to make that trip again one final time. Thanks for the video.
I thought LA had the greatest of freeways (forgetting about the traffic). This is hands down the ultimate that I have ever seen. Have never been to Texas and you just added an item in my bucket list. Phenomenal! TDoT should take over the world.
Yeah, what Texas has done in the last 15-20 years is really impressive, don't sleep on Houston either, the new project to move and improve I-45 is amazing. ua-cam.com/video/iUFK6KcBbGA/v-deo.html
Thanks for the link. Your other video (Las Vegas Dusk Drive) clearly shows that Nevada roads are also extremely well maintained. Its one of my favorite videos.
@@Freewayjim Mhm. I-45 ultimate project should've been constructed anyway. I-45 structure is just not for me. It's so old that you can never have a week without traffic before this virus even started.
Texas crazy folks but the best roads in the nation. Even the side roads or frontage roads are better than most states interstate systems. Had my best time riding my motorcycle on the roads of Tehas'... Good stuff again FWJ
Even their "state routes" are better than most interstates given most of them are built to twice the interstate standards. There is one thing I hate about Texas freeways though, that is in the more rural areas, the offramps and onramps are very short and often throw you right into oncoming traffic (coming toward you) on the access road. Although they have to yield, I still find that very intimidating for someone who is coming from out of state. I love Texas freeways though, they're the icon of what American freeways should be like..I would kill to have them build freeways like they have them in Texas in Atlanta.. although we're getting those express lanes, we need more highways pretty bad. P.S. Sorry for cutting you off when I was trying to make my exit on the left +Freewayjim .. thats just kinda how we do it here in Texas.. lol

Finally got to check out this video this morning. What a great job TxDOT did with the LBJ express lanes. Pretty epic stuff. Gotta see that for myself one day. Nice selection of soundtracks...going to the "favorites" list.
@@Freewayjim Trust me, everything when it's to underrated freeways looks better in person. When I saw Katy Freeway on UA-cam, I was impressed but wasn't like me actually being on it in person either way.

I've always loved driving in Texas! Great roads and great speed limits. But, this is phenomenal! I haven't been down there in a number of years. Now I must go! That extra speed literally comes at a price, LOL. Hopefully you can come back in a couple of years and do a video on TX 183 & 114 in Irving after they finish the Midtown Express project. While it will only be in its "interim" configuration, it will still be much better than is right now or even before the construction started.
Freewayjim honestly, date I say it (and I never thought I'd hear myself say this since I'm a speed demon) but 75mph maayy just seem a little too quick through there!! If I just saw the road I would have guessed about 60mph!

One of the things I love about living in DFW: (as well as the entire state), the relatively high speed limits on most highways/freeways, even in urban areas. Epic music, epic drive! Love it! These types of videos are an art of editing, and it's nice I'm not the only person that loves mad freeways! Barnsey! Australia represent! Dallas is like the Melbourne of Texas. Oh also for you americans, Texas and it's population and city sizes is very similar to Australia. But when it comes to Size, Texas is similar size to New South Wales which is Australia's third smallest state! Shows you how huge Australia is! USA is still slightly bigger, but I would loved to drive across your country one day!
Thank you SOO much for your time and effort with this presentation. I will be moving back to Dallas Aug 4,19 after having been gone almost 13 years. This will help re-acclimate me to the present chaos. =)
I remember when they was building this tollway I tried to avoid that side of Dallas at all cost but when you drive a big truck you gotta do what you gotta do
I was most looking forward to your tour of Dallas. At this point, I think they have the best freeways in Texas. The attention to detail in terms of aesthetics blows the other Texas cities out of the water imo. I hate you weren't able to get any of that toll road that has those giant raised silver reflective stars built into the sides. Thanks for posting.
Personally I think Houston freeways are better than Dallas. They look more up to date and just better I designed I guess? Can't put my finger on it. However those express lanes look very cool.
IMHO, Houston has more, large but plain looking freeways. It seemed for a long time that region dominated highway funding in Texas. But what has been redone in Dallas I think is far more interesting from an engineering and aesthetic standpoint.
I think going as far to say that Houston has "plain" freeways is pretty insulting to every other freeway system as I think Houston, Dallas, The Bay Area, and Los Angeles have the best ones in the country and probably the world. I mean if you think Houston has plain freeways then I'd hate to see what you'd think of roads here in Kansas City :(
The really plain ones are in Austin, which is strange since it's our capital city. The freeways and interchanges especially are gray, moldy, and ugly. I love how they look in the DFW metro.
Awesome video. Even though you published on Feb 20 you can tell its older because Katy Station and Bleu Ciel towers look huge now and make an impact on the Uptown skyline. Still under construction here. Amazing work as always FJ!
Thanks for the inspiration, I plan to have my Freeway Tours Series on my channel. I may not have the right software for the editing how you do it, but its better than nothing. I love Dallas...
Interesting how Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston even Atlanta all look alike. Cities like NYC, Chicago, SF, LA even Boston are easy to recognize, yet most other US cities look so similar. Enjoy the vids, looking forward to more uploads.
Wow, Dallas's freeways makes our freeways here in the NYC area look like it's from a third world country. I thought our freeways here in the NYC area was the definition of the entire highway system here in the US, but this video proved me 100% completely wrong.
Sunbelt cities like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and Atlanta have modern freeway systems, Los Angeles has some pretty special freeways as well, NYC has not built anything new since the mid 1960's and it shows.
He was on the tolled portion of 635 thats semi underground. For years 635 was a four-lane freeway stuck at a crawl. So they necked it down to two lanes and took 5 years to rebuild with a lower tollway. Everyone learned to get along without it in that time, so ironically there is almost no excess traffic anymore. The non-toll portion of 635 is only 70 mph. Its only the tollways. I know the George Bush Turnpike is at 75 mph as well. Sam Rayburn tollway gets up to 75 too. Wow didn't know there's an 85 mph highway. I-20 to El Paso gets up to 80, EBGaming13. But that's gotta be a mercy speed limit. Except the fracking boom towns Midland and Odessa, there is absolutely NOTHING along the way. Its not a short trip either.
Way to go FreewayJim, that's called aggressive driving skills, the highway gods have nothing to do with it, when drivers aren't courteous, you have to seize the opportunity to merge into the desired lane. At 15:30, the Margaret Hunt bridge was very hypnotic for me, I found myself staring at the suspension cables rather than the road, (Not Good), Amazing Job!!!
If you go way north on Preston Road, you’ll find that it’s one lane each way with a speed limit of 75. You should check it out next time you’re in DFW. The road goes from the Red River to Downtown Dallas.
Another great video. I'm going to have to look into that texpress thing. It seems like a good option if I'm passing through. I wonder what other highways have this kind of "pay for less crowded traffic" thing.
I really liked the begging part of the LBJ Express, You were living life in the fast lane. You should played the song Life in the Fast Lane by The Eagles for the begging. Have you done the Eagles for any of your videos? I also liked how you got to continue onto 35E. that was incredible. One other thing Your counterclockwise trip around the US this year was fantastic. I'm sad to see it come to an end next week but where are you planning to go to in 2017?
Eagles songs usually are not safe to use on YT or I'd have used Hotel California already, Life in the Fast lane does not have the tempo I was looking for there. I don't understand your question on I-35E and I don't know know where I'll be going this year.
When I was briefly in Dallas in the 1970s there was a route called "Central Expressway" on the northeast side. It was one of Dallas' first controlled access highways. However, it had ridiculously short on ramps and was scary to use. (Even though I had a fast Camaro) Did they ever improve or reroute this corridor?
Those are some of the most beautiful interchanges I've seen in your videos. Also that "Sabado dos Milagros" SUV was a tight spot! Was it filmed on a Saturday by any chance?
It was filmed on a Tuesday as noted at 0:25 in the intro. Yeah, there are some neat interchanges there, the previous video 16-39 probably featured more of them.
It would be cool if you did a vid from 820 in Fort Worth heading east towards Dallas through airport Freeway. The express lanes on 820 and 183 are impressive.
For sure, you do great work. Eventually once the Dallas side of 183 is complete that would be an epic video staring from DT Dallas, 35 to 183 all the way until it hits 35W in Fort Worth.
The area at the beginning of the video is one of my favorite places, so active and frantic to drive through, but I have never driven down in the Express Lanes! It looks incredible! I just can't help but think how useless "Express Lanes" seem to be - nobody ever drives on them and I think that's mainly because people are confused as to what they are, like will I get charged more for driving on it, is it essentially car pool only? Signs have always been vague to me, lol. Really though this whole route is the best, some days just go out and drive around the freeway because it's so cool
I left Dallas in 2002 and returned for a visit in 2012. I could hardly believe how many roads were added and expanded. Today, I'd probably get lost quite easily.
@Kyrios I would do 95 mph without police on my ass
Haha, Singleton Blvd. There can only be one instance of it. (Programmer's joke)
That was bad, and you should feel bad. LMAO.
lol
Mr. Meseeks That joke was bad af
:) Fantastic!
The LBJ Express project is an incredible freeway.
Jim I think you’re going to have to return to DFW again. Seems like every time one project is finished, there’s other big ones just getting started!
Lol, the traffic gods have found favor with you.
LOL and I'm grateful!
Thanks James, LOL I hear ya on the highway gods :) There is a lot to look at in the Dallas area, my head was on a swivel.
I enjoyed watching this video
40 miles west is Forth Worth,TX with still wider and bigger freeways. Unfortunately everything is bigger in TX.
Hey FWJ I'm back, that toll way is expensive as hell. Rush hour it's like 6 bucks
A lot of people in Texas have pick-up trucks!!! That’s nice to see!!!😀
Nice choice of the song "Vasoline" as vasoline is a petroleum product and Texas is a giant in Oil and Gas so I like the way you think FWJ!
8:58 That was a scary exit dive!
The section of the express lanes with the horizontal bridge supports and open sky visible in between them reminds me of the old video game Outrun.
Great tour of Dallas freeways amid the traffic and bad drivers!
Thanks, yeah we managed to get through that in one piece :)
If you go way north on Preston Road, you’ll find that it’s one lane each way with a speed limit of 75. You should check it out next time you’re in DFW. The road goes from the Red River to Downtown Dallas.
Great video, Dallas looks huge when driving
Thank you, yes it''s very spread out.
It is the 4th largest metro in the entire country after all. And is growing at an alarming rate. Poised to overtake NYC in just 39 short years
Bubba Keith Dallas is huge just like Houston is.
Oh my God ... the minute 9:02 ..... "Sábado de Milagros (Miracle Saturday)" in that car..
Another great video. I'm going to have to look into that texpress thing. It seems like a good option if I'm passing through. I wonder what other highways have this kind of "pay for less crowded traffic" thing.
Thank you, in the previous video I-30 has express lanes being built, and there is probably more to come. www.texpresslanes.com/maps/texpress-lanes-map
1:42 Wow! A 75 mile speed limit in Dallas!
75 mph Only on I-635 Express Lanes
The Rest is 70 mph or 65 mph
On open freeway 75 mph but
Hwy 130 in Austin is 85 mph
Freewayjim Any chance you could use "you wreck me" by Tom Petty on a future vid? That'd go down a blast I reckon 👍
Too bad, some of the Eagles live in Dallas
7:44 I love that song
Tahjna Calhoun me too
I actually love the first music.
very nice video 👌 this reminds me of Eugene Oregon
Thank you!
vraiment super la vidéo de belles musiques ( dangereux quand même ) salutations depuis la suiise
Thank you!
I love your channel
Thank you!
@@Freewayjim no problem :)
Great video... Thumbs up....👍👍👍👍✌✌✌✌😊😊😊😊
Thank you!
fantastic
Thank you
When I was briefly in Dallas in the 1970s there was a route called "Central Expressway" on the northeast side. It was one of Dallas' first controlled access highways. However, it had ridiculously short on ramps and was scary to use. (Even though I had a fast Camaro) Did they ever improve or reroute this corridor?
Yes, see the 2nd half of the video I posted before this one #16-39, it's quite nice. ua-cam.com/video/8dEAVNm1MJY/v-deo.html
In this video, try to find a suspicious Chevrolet Silverado.
Also the "Saturdays of Miracles" van miraculously didn't hit you
welcometo Dalass I watching alot laceration on your videos but this city we live here thanks.
very good, blessed
Thank you!
Yeah, I saw that. I meant it as a joke. "Saturday of Miracles". Also, great tunes.
Thanks...not familiar with that phrase.
Well done!
Thank you!
thanks somuch we live here
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Thank you!
It would be cool if you did a vid from 820 in Fort Worth heading east towards Dallas through airport Freeway. The express lanes on 820 and 183 are impressive.
Maybe someday, there are a lot of roads to film there and I always seem to be in a rush to get somewhere else when I'm there.
For sure, you do great work. Eventually once the Dallas side of 183 is complete that would be an epic video staring from DT Dallas, 35 to 183 all the way until it hits 35W in Fort Worth.
Thank you!
I Like it nice video!
Thank you!
Looks like there is a lot of tight merges and "please no one be there" merges as well like 9:16
Good Video there Jim
Thank you!
I don’t know if I like driving in Dallas or Houston better both have amazing freeways
