@3:10 Rotating corn on the cob bridge is an inspired design choice.
The Mega Drive version with 8 players was pretty chaotic indeed. Played it as a teen with a very large group of friends and if the cables around the console weren't messy enough, doing hot seat (it was over 10 people in a room around the console) after a race was for sure. Someone would always complain about the plays from others lol
One of my best. Due to this game, i started to study programming later. Cheers from Poland Bro ❤
Had Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96 on Megadrive. It's basically an update of Micro Machines 2 with new tracks and a track editor. Yes, you could build your own tracks in game and while you couldn't make tracks quite as elaborate as the ones built in, you had plenty of options, including setting the top speed, acceleration and grip of the cars.
🎉😢❤❤
I had to turn this video up to 2x for the authentic micro machines feel
I had youtube captions on, apparently it's not sssss... snes drunk, it's nice truck? lol
Same, just about to comment about it XD, Nice Truck really caught me off guard, i also in mute so i literally played nice truck in snes drunk voice ans it just goes really well 😂
Lol...... It always does that..... It's faf... Haha xx
OG CC homies wya@@jamesheldjr7271
Oh yeah this where I get all my automotive needs
Nnnnnnnnnnnice truck
There is also the Micro Machines Military game made for the Genesis/Megadrive that I highly recommend as well. My only criticism with the earlier Micro Machine games is that there are no in-game maps to give the player a hint on where you need to make turns. Fast vehicles tend to move so fast that you have very little time to react, often throwing you right off the cliff unless you memorize the track. Otherwise, they're great games.
John Moschitta Jr! I've always enjoyed seeing him in commercials.
Fun fact micromachines 2 was promoted on a British TV show called Bad Influence and one of the the characters you can choose is a presenter from that show (Violet Berlin).
Ah mate!... you just gave me not only flashbacks to my youth but also PTSD cos how mental that show actually was 😂
'Games master' wasn't much better though with that giant bald bonce floating about 😂
And Violet is the 2nd best character, in terms of character stats (Which are also affected by the vehicles), with Spider being number 1
@@calvertbeatz5288RoseTintedSpectrum does recaps of each series of the show! He's great
Nothing fun about it.
You know a game that 4 people love to get together and play? Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball
Monopoly?
"Love"
We also had the lesser known "Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96" for the Sega Megadrive.
I guess it was like Micro Machines 2, but with some other features such as a map editor (it had it's limitations, but it was there).
No J-Cart though, if i recall correctly.
There was also a "Micro Machines Military" for the Megadrive, but I never saw that one.
I guess it was to atone for the lack of tanks in the sequel XD.
Great video!
96 did have the J-cart, as I remember playing with 4 controllers.
I remember that speed talking actor also as the voice of Blur in Transformers.
John Moschitta, who happened to have a world record for his fast talking…
I'm kind of shocked Codemasters needed Ocean to publish the games. I remember Codemasters as one of the bigger 8 bit publishers in the UK back in the day.
I think Ocean only published these games on Nintendo consoles?
@@gamingcrazy7013 That's a good point. I remember that Codemasters were in Nintendo's bad books for trying to publish Micro Machines on the NES without getting certified by Nintendo themselves.
I remember renting this game as a child. I stayed up all night and skipped school the day after.
Still as fun as I remember. Definitely worth playing today. Did not know they made a sequel, gonna have to check it out.
God I love Micro Machines 2 specially, because I did play with 3 other friends using the 2 controller mode, and it was so fun! Yeah, it was crazy at first, but when we got on the groove, we just couldn't stop playing, it was great!
The Overcooked series uses the same "shared controller" gimmick for multiplayer. It works surprisingly well, and is oddly thematic since the gameplay is about working together.
One of the things I always liked about Micro Machines is that the game was released on like 10 platforms and regardless of the systems power level, the game was basically the same. Nes, Master System, Genesis, Snes the list goes on. Other games did this too of course like Y's 3. Nowadays it's scarce to get even a Switch port of some games.
The PC version of MM2 was the BEST! It had a track editor that let you change or even completely redraw the whole tileset of a track. We spent weekends creating great new courses, or just trolling each other with invisible pits and hidden jumps before tight corners. Come to think of if, this might have been one of my first exposures to game design. What a gem.
a 96 version for the genesis had that too
That system of racing until the other player leaves the screen is actually a super interesting way to do top-down racers. I’m surprised it hasn’t been used more.
Oh the memories. Play the second title at my last workplace during breaks. It was awesome, especially the track with the kitchen sink and the fight to stay on the sponge. (Or take the shortcut over the rim)
Loved these games! Brings back a lot of memories - including late fees at the video store.
I remember playing Micro Machines 2 back in the Mega drive. One of the characters you could select in MM2 was a character called Violet, (I think that was her name), she was based off of a TV presenter here in the UK who hosted a video game news show.
Describing the series as "still active today", even with the "kind-of" qualifier, is a bold choice when describing a game that came out in 2017 on a last generation console. That was _8 years ago._ Are we all feeling old yet? That makes me feel even older than thinking about the original NES and SNES games.
Micromachines on SNES was my version of a "oh I recognize that game I'll get it for xmas" from my Aunt. The fact it was a ton of fun and still in my collection today (in an era where I traded in games I didn't play anymore) surprised me looking back. Highly recommend people check this game out anyway they can.
I use your outro phrase at my workplace after speaking with a client on the phone. At first, the clients were taken aback, but they really enjoy it. Have yourself a wonderful rest of your day SNES Drunk :)
My wife walking past the back of the laptop: "Is that the little car commercial guy?"
If you're familiar with the Micro Machines man you're knees pop in the mornings.
0:15 Blurr, transform and roll out...
I was about to comment the same thing, haha!
As a Knicks fan growing up, the Anthony Mason reference hit hard in a great nostalgic way, RIP big man.
I vaguely remember renting this one or playing it somewhere. I'm fascinated by all the environments they put the Micro Machines on. Pool tables, pinball machines, desks, etc. Very much in the spirit of playing with toy cars.
I think the huge real-world environments are a great idea to make the MicroMachines license make sense and add some fun. Especially the boundaries made of bathtub bubbles for the boats.
Spider is a legendary character and I've seen people using his portrait as avatar around the internet a few times
Playing this game back in the day inspired me to make a race track on the dining room table with cheerios. I had no idea there were multiple sequels for the NES game.
Toybox Turbos is a Micro Machines style game developed by Codemasters in 2014 as well. If I had to guess they didn't have the rights at that time or something...
I was just going to mention that. I thought it was exactly the same as Micro Machines World Series but without the license, but since they were released several years apart, I guess that might not be the case?
2:27 funnily enough Nintendo would do this as well with Mario party on the GameCube. It was only for eight-player games.
I have this on NES, N64 and Game Gear. The GG version is also 4 players in that goofy 2 people per controller style with 1 + start being the turn buttons on one side.
And the N64 version is 8 players in that same goofy control.
Micro Machines '96
My favorite is '96 on Genesis/Mega Drive, that is basically MM2 with a level editor. I created ton of levels and played it with my friend all day long.
I also played the original Game Boy version with a friend on a single Game Boy, sharing the controls. While driving underground to school. Must have looked goofy. That was a time where playing videogames itself was goofy, and then this on top.
Clearly the answer is to make a rom hack where the SNES version has the NES music. :V
The SNES game is the game I probably played the most, with the four-player-adapter. So many sibling matches.
I miss those days.
Oh man i loved the first SNES micro machines. Such a good racer, especially the fast tracks where you drove head to head with your opponents counting the cereals for the next turn or knock the enemy against a sponge or down then table. So stupid, so fun. Good times.
Total length of video: 370 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 2.5 secs.
.68% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
69th comment BTW, nice.
Hello fellow statistics colleague :)
*nice truck
I gotta give this a try! The N64 game was legendary to me and my friend when we were kids. The laughter that ensued was priceless. Pure chaotic fun!
I wish i still had my micro machines those things were rad asf lol
I loved this game so much in my childhood 🥰
I played it on NES, SNES and PC.
Thank you for your video 🙏
I have a newer version on steam. And it looks very good. You have fun to collect items for new vehicles. But it doesn't makes so much fun, if you make progress. In the late game, it becomes to difficulty.
Epic memories of the fast talking micro machines guy! I used to stare at the screen wishing to play with such cool toys. Never got any, but man, I dreamt!
Playing V3 with 7 friends (or some more passing the controllers) on PS1 is one of the best teenage memories
weird to release a PAL only game based on an American toy line.
I would love an ocean software video :)
I actually played a good amount of 4-player micro machines using two controllers as a young teen.
It was great!
Great SNES retrospective of the Micro Machines games. My current favouite it the Game Boy version (I recently got a second Game Boy and a link cable). The two player race on this version plays like a real race because you both have your own screen. It's easy to play and fun.
I played the hell out of the Game Boy version. They had that 2 players 1 controller format there too if you can believe it. What's even crazier is it actually worked pretty well!
I had a SNES multitap at highschool and I bought MicroMachines 2 Turbo Tournament, great games, really fun, specially the circuit Fierry Fiasco when all the players "should" stop to cross the water in a sponge. There's another MicroMachines at Mega Drive Called MicroMachines Military, more of the same but with Militar vehicles. Micromaniacs (PSX) and MicroMachines (128 bits consoles) were OK, but not so great.
I was indeed unaware of all the sequels, heck I was unaware that it had originally been on the original NES
that game was so much fun back in the day, I had a lot of Micro Machines toys so I was very interested in this game and it did not disappoint
That's so interesting!! That's kind of what the Switch's whole shtick was; a controller that splits for multiplayer games
I remember playing Micromachines V3 with my brother and cousins, that was the first time I used the split controller feature, and worked well for us.
I will not tolerate Bill Walsh College Football slander
The NES game is one of my favorite games ever. It's an example of really using the source material correctly. It's right up there with Monster in My Pocket.
Any UK/Europeans here simply not thinking of Micro Machines as originally a NES game at all? The whole series is inextricably linked with the Mega Drive for me.
Micro Machines kinda is the OG 'Speedrunners', isn't it? Running your opponents off the screen in a track race. Unless some other game did the same thing even earlier.
God, Anthony Mason was pure muscle. Couldn’t shoot, couldn’t handle, but he could rebound and shove elbows
I remember playing this (snes version I think) around my cousins house as a kid, he was so nasty to me but playing this made up for it 😅
Also Micro Maniacs is an incredibly fun game! Nobody seems to remember it.
Played both nes/snes as a kid. The snes version was always available for rent and was a default pick if nothing else was available. Great little racing game and the different tracks gave it a lot of variety for a game that didn’t actually have much going on. I think the simple controls made it an easy pick up and play vs some other options out there.
Another spiritual successor which IMO exceeds Micro Machines is the Mashed/Drive to Survive games. Same objective....race to the edge of the screen but has many more game modes.
I played a ton of this with my brother when I was little. Really love this game.
Using coke-lines to mark the tracks sure was a choice
Me and my brother had a lot of fun with this back in the day on the Megadrive. Slowly nudging the other player into the kitchen sink was side splitting 😅
i own the megadrive jcart.. and boy it was fun.. the multiplayer allowed to 8 players at the same time on a special track only though ( well if you can rassemble 7 other friends right ) and it works !
otherwise, really great game to play from 1 to 4 on normal modes.
Megadrive also had a 96 edition ( with a track editor ! ) and a military edition !
Man, another set of games my middle school friends and I played a ton of. Good times.
I loved this game on SNES as a kid. I only collect games CIB but I still have my loose childhood copy because I can’t let it go. Someday I’ll get a box and manual to complete it like I have other games.
At 1:16 it is mentioned an extra new vehicle on the snes version, what is the vehicle?
That music in the first minute ❤
Loved this game on nes, so innovative and imaginative on the maps
Those games are amazing, i was a huge fan of Micro Machines back when i was younger!
I would have loved this in the 1990s, but I had MotoRoader on the Turbo Grafx-16, which was pretty fun.
I loved them, the first and the second! My cousin also had Micro Machines: Military, which wasn't bad, but it didn't feel the same.
I had it on Genesis and it was great!
Tank controls might turn some people off, but I've never had a problem with it.
Excellent game.
Nice review and a quick shout-out to Supersonic Racers on PS1 by the same developer, very similar gameplay
the PS2 one is a hidden gem as well, great multiplayer experience
Get stuck on everything: The Racing Game
I had the second for Super Nintendo since I'm in Europe, however I loved the first one more. A friend of mine had the original for Philips CDI and the frame rate and the general speed of the game is reduced on that platform, making the game slightly easier to control. So muh fun back in the day
I remember renting this game several times from blockbuster as a kid and having a blast with it.
Cool. I didn't know there were that many Micro Machines games, but it makes sense. They still make the toys.
I played with 3 friends in the past Micro Machines on the SNES. It was a lot of fun but also 2:20 describes the situation pretty well!
No, you'd play this on the sega mega drive/genesis, it plays better and doesn't have a cropped screen and lower res output. Also the J cart already allows 4 player support without you needing a 4 player controller adapter.
I played the he’ll out of Micro Machines on the PC back in the day. Don’t think I ever owned it on a console though. On a related note, they were my favorite toy as a child.
One of the first toys I remember getting was that micro machine track set when I was 6
The fast-talking guy in the commercials was John "Motormouth" Moschitta Jr.
I loved the original Micro Machines on the NES. I remember playing over and over again with my sister.
We need more old ads for all of the tie-in games for the 90s from now on
DYK - If you use UA-cam's auto-generated closed-captions, "Snnnnneeessss Drunk" becomes "Nice Truck"
This was actually a good game when playing with another friend. Aw, memories
J cart was so much fun in the day I remember playing with the whole family
I remember the Micro Machines because many 'N' scale model railroaders loved the cars because they were far cheaper than models of 'N' scale cars, and the variety was far greater. 😮
Good review! I only remember the original NES Micro Machines game...and that fast-talking guy from the ads. I never knew about these other Micro Machines games. They seem pretty neat, but recall getting annoyed by Micro Machines for not being a traditional racer. I remember not really caring for it, though. I just kind of thought it a bit dumb that you only raced towards the edge of the screen in multiplayer instead of a full race. 😅
I got to meet John Moschitta (the Micromachines guy) at a con once. Really nice guy, and yes, he can zip off talking even faster than that at the drop of a hat if he wants.
even as a massive snes man , megadrive is where its at. the resolution was designed for megadrive and you can see way more screen.
First time we worked out the 4 player thing my mind was blown lol. Like surely this isn’t what they mean but it was! Eureka!
Micro Machines 64 aged perfectly in my opinion! Awesome multiplayer! Micro Machines especially on Genesis with the Controller Ports on cartridge which is super smart
More Genesis, more TG16!! We need that Rondo of Blood review.
Codemasters took amazing care of us gamers throughout their decades of work.
