    111 Coal Miners Killed
Music: Dying Miner written by Woody Guthrie which is tribute to those affected by the Centralia Coal Mine Disaster.
THIS DISASTER CAN NEVER BE FORGOTTEN...
This video is IN MEMORY to those families affected by this terrible disaster - but is dedicated to Pete & Josie Ballantini. Pete along with his brother Joe, were both killed.
This new video was created to accompany my daughter's 7th Grade Illinois History Fair Presentation Exhibit in 2012 which was on the Centralia Coal Mine No. 5 ~ The Disaster No One Stopped.... We went more in depth with this video than what we did with the previous video that my son created several years ago for his exhibit. We also tried to identify and name as many people in the video as a tribute to their families...
We would like to thank everyone that we interviewed and that took the time to help us with ALL the research on this project.
IN MEMORY of all those 111 coal miners killed...

Amazing job! My grandfather Fred Bright was a survivor. This video brought the stories to life. To see him in this video and his handsome picture as a survivor took my breath away! I miss him so much, now I have video of a historical event which was a very important part of his life and our family history. Thank you !

I honestly don't know if I had family that lived in Centralia, but before I moved to NC ( I lived in Williamsport) my teacher said we wouldn't learn about this til high school. I'm only in 6th and I love learning about centralia

Many of my relatives still live there. My Grandfather used to work for the Rail Road too, and for most of his life. If the last name of Nalawajka may mean anything.

I am related to the Spinners. "Please name the our new baby Joe" was a daughter, given the name Jody, of whom my mother knew. Jody was a red haired freckled gale who was very friendly. My mother really appreciated seeing this video, and thank you for making this.

My uncle (Raymond C. Buehne) was killed in that mine blast. My mother always talked about it. She gave me a newspaper (reprint) from the Centrailia newspaper that was originally printed in march of 1947. Thanks for posting the video. Your vid has a lot of info never talked about over the years.

Mr. Niepoetter provided SO much information for this project this year and even for my son's project a few years ago!! We are SO glad someone in his family viewed the video!!! Thank you for taking the time to comment!! This video was an extra part of the History Fair Display Board my daugther created, we had SO many pictures that were not used and we thought another video to honor those men and families would be perfect! THANKS!

After researching the Centralia No 5 Coal Mine in Illinois, we came in contact with a LOT of information regarding the Centralia Pennsylvania Coal Mine fires that ruined and caused the entire town to evacuate! It's really unbelievable!!

My Grandfather, John Pawlisa died in this mine explosion. I never got to meet him. I don’t know his family either. Only learned of him 13 years ago through some letters and ancestry. Met a family member who had a box of his belongings. My nephew is a spitting image of him and my dad and I strongly resemble him. It’s so sad that he made it home from WWII to die in a mine explosion when my grandmother was five months pregnant with his only child.

Thank you so much! I have been sharing and documenting monuments and memorials in Illinois for a couple years now. Getting deeper into it I had recently started looking into this disaster. Only a few places can you find this whole story bobbing up in a sea of whitewash. This is so well and fully put together with the human face statistics always hide. I'd only days ago wrote a piece on the Panama Disaster of 1915. Illinois has had more than it's share and lead the way in fighting for safety and yet we all know, whatever the industry, worker safety is only number one on the poster. 1915, 1947, steelworkers die in 2011, and on and on.

I initially thought that this was Centralia Pa, didn't realize that there was another coal mining town with the same name. I live as the crow flies, about 20ish miles from Centralia Pa. This video was fascinating, yet extremely sad. Two towns sharing the same name, yet two completely different mining tragedy stories! Don't really know the mining history of Centralia Pa before the underground fire that made them famous, but I do know that the mines were extensive underground. Almost certain that miners died underground here, it's just that most information found here is on the fire. Both tragedies could have and should have been avoided if safety had been a concern. It truly is a shame that it takes the death of 111 miners before the government decided to get involved. When the mining boom was happening near the turn of the 20th century, safety was of no concern to anyone other than the miners themselves. Thousands of coal, gold, silver, etc. mines with thousands of men and children literally slaving away just so the mine owners can make a profit. The all mighty dollar was and still is more important than the safety of the miners. Hundreds of collapses, explosions, etc. before Centralia IL. Thousands of dead miners all for the greed of wealth. The travesty is that it took the Centralia No 5 mine disaster before anything serious was done. But however once Congress finally acted, conditions did improve. But, the disasters still happened and are still continuing to this day! Just before Christmas 2020, there was a miner killed by rockfall not far from where I live. Accidents can and will happen, no matter how safe the miners make things. Anyway, I enjoyed learning the history of the No 5 mine disaster. The video, history and time used to put it together is very well done! Very well researched. And I'm sorry you lost your great great grandfather and uncle in the disaster!

My mother's grandfather was killed in the Old Ben Coal Corporation Mine #8 explosion in West Frankfort, IL only 4 months after the Centralia explosion (July 27, 1947). So many mine disaster in southern IL/Little Egypt, but the Centralia was particularly awful.

My grandfather (Jake Rethard) dies in the mine. I was unaware that there were any survivors who were in the mine. Since the explosion was during shift change, there were some who were on the surface at the time of the explosion. Are these the survivors you speak of? My uncle, Raymond Rethard, was late for the shift that day, so was part of the rescue crew. Some of the minors loved Long enough to write final notes to their family before the gas got them. U of I Press has a book on the investigation, and the Centralia papers from that time have detailed stories and pictures.
