I'm not even that old (42) and when I was young ultrasounds were just becoming a thing. My parents ( ok, my mom) never had one with any of us 8 kids that I know of, between the extra cost ( dairy farmers, no cushy health insurance), the fact of unnecessary radiation exposure by having one, and deciding they liked being surprised at the birth ! We kids were a little disappointed at 1st, that no, we weren't gunna be like my classmate's family and find out now what baby sibling is, but later I was glad there was still that to look forward to finding out on the day.

A schmuck who spent $120 on an engagement ring in 1984 here........ we are married for 38 years now. It's not how much you spend on the ring, it's how much you spend in time and attention getting to know the person. Fortunately, when you know she "needs" a $40k ring, you know you don't need to waste anymore time getting to know her.

My ring had fallen off the night table last night and I was taking a quick look for it in the top drawer before turning out the light. It was almost 2 AM, but my husband got up to search the drawer. I had a bunch of funeral colour flowers bought by a guest on the day. Married 32 years so far and going strong. An expensive ring won't buy you a happy marriage, probably the exact opposite.

What crap. I was born in 1958. Dad didn't use wrapping paper to keep us in line -- he told us what to do and we damn well did it. He never used physical violence, but he would get down on his knee to look us in the eyes and in a deep voice would ask us what we did wrong ... and keep at us until we answered. Only needed to do that a few times until we got manageable. I told the gal next door about this, she tried it on her two young sons, and stopped yelling all the time. She didn't make the dog answer but getting down face to face and scolding in a deep voice worked there, too.

Yes, brother that's definitely me too. I'm a 42 year old disabled Army Veteran who is guilty of everything he mentioned. Getting my PTSD issues documented with VA wasn't the hardest part it was the several years it took for them to agree that my TBI issues were connected to my service while being deployed in Iraq where I had it documented in my medical files about constant headaches and migraines. The hardest part is not being able to get a average person to understand what we vets go through. Too many get ignored while begging for help and turning to extreme measures when they aren't getting any. While living in Atlanta one USAF veteran set himself on fire right in front of City Hall, not long after that another veteran was gunned down by police, a few blocks from my job, in an attempted bank robbery. He didn't even have a gun on him and witnesses even said that he just showed everyone there respect. There was an assumption that he had an explosive device but this turned out to be fake. The stories of vets I have known and random ones I meet all the time, vary from person to person.

In the US you're taught to look down on your job, "you don't want to end up like the janitor", "you're meant for bigger and better things", instead of "you're receiving a paycheck (may have to work more than one job in today's economy) and you're able to provide for your family (I know is difficult in this economy). I will just say that while we have always had "all kinds" here/melting into our pot, I think historically it had been quite common for kids to be raised with values along the lines of doing your best regardless of the job. Definitely for Christians way back when it had been common for parents to read the Bible a lot to their kids/at family time daily, teaching these things incl. the verse about not doing our work as men-pleasers but as unto the Lord. And " whatsoever your hand findeth to do, do with all your might" and " He who is faithful in little will be given much" and a few more incl. "love your neighbor as yourself ". I think most cultures had a high value of craftsmanship, until very recent history, if not the belief in doing a good job for God even if you're a slave in a foreign land and no-one but ou will know. So, my point is that yes, Japanese are to be credited for holding onto these values, Just that it's not that America never had them.

VA: I haven't had a significant issue with VA care - except for the one time they were tricked by a civilian subcontractor into asking whether I owned any weapons. Of course, that's none of their business... and I let them know that via my Congressman and Senators. But the care itself? Outstanding. Free healthcare, from people who actually give a crap, unlike regular hospitals (just better on average, the amount they care that is, both settings have many employees who genuinely care, and for the most part, most people do, just the VA is better in this regard). But yeah, I never understood the hate the VA recieves. It's like people blow up the bad incidents, but on average I think most people get good care like me, they just aren't loud about it. I've dealt with multiple VA's and the amount of care and resources they help with is amazing, all for the price of "on the house". and the cool thing is, i'm not disabled through or not through the military, and they still help me out and give me free healthcare. They even helped me when I was homeless and that's not hospital related really at all.

Female from town I lived in had a child out of wedlock. She went to the welfare office for benefits. One question was 'Who is the father?", she said she didn't know. They said that this state goes aggressively after fathers who won't support their children, so she needed to list all of the men who she had sex within 30 days before through 30 days after the medically determined conception date so the welfare office could do DNA testing to determine the father. She listed 17 names. This is a smallish town (30k people). This story went wide very quickly. One guy engaged, 3 guys married, a couple others long term dating. Over half got lawyers and denied having sex with her in court and under oath. They were all compelled by the court to provide a DNA sample, regardless. Surprise! None of them was the father. Since this was so public, the welfare office kept digging. They noticed some unusual traits in the baby's DNA. Turned out that her brother was the father! She admitted (in a plea deal) that she just named the names of a bunch of guys she knew thinking the welfare office wouldn't pursue it. But this admission was almost a year later, after a broken engagement, 2 divorces, and who knows how much other havok this demented psycho wreaked in other people's lives. She did 18 months, her brother did 2 years (incest is a felony in this state) and the child was placed in an out of state sealed adoption. The brother and sister still live together with their father.------A psycho walks into a welfare office and just because she writes names on a piece of paper, 17 men were assumed guilty until proven innocent. And the courts agreed.

As a veteran in Texas, I actually haven't had any problems. My increase went through and a short amount of time, my appointment wait times aren't very long. Same can't be said for when I lived in Arizona. So I guess the long and short is it depends where you live. As to jargon, I'm in the same boat. Roger that...

You're right that other teachers are the worst part of being a teacher. Admin being a very close second. The parents are generally useless, but they typically have the courtesy to leave you alone. Actually, it's not courtesy. They just don't care.
I was an educator for well over a decade. You all need to be extremely careful about who you let near your children.
