This was fun. I got into paracording during the pandemic lockdown. It's led me down and interesting path of crafts with ropes and cords. Something calls me to it like preparing for the end of the world when I might have to fend for myself and these feel like real life skills. Even if I only ever make a dodgy football net for my nephew. It still feels like a life skill.

do you have any other videos on showing how to connect the first ring it is 12" across and then the top ring is 30.5" across? what knot is use to add line to the needle when you run out of it?
@@baileyharry301 When it comes to adding more line, I mostly use the Surgeon's Knot: ua-cam.com/video/zMaBlFdlSjQ/v-deo.htmlsi=7SkhhcdXh0dr5ac- When it comes to attaching the first ring, are you saying that ring is part way up from the very bottom of the net?
@@KnottingKnots Yes the one is the smaller one. I'm having trouble that when I do the 1st row around the very center it comes out ok, but the knots are not staying tight, I have done it 5 times now and it is getting a bit of a drag for I make sure they are tight,. I did get it to stay and then I did the 2nd row all seem to be ok, but when I did the 3rd row I was doing fine and then the knots came undone about a quarter of the way from the 2nd row, now this is my 3rd time doing this, and I'm getting a bit upset with it. I have gone over your video at least 30 times so far. Any ides would be great.
@@baileyharry301 OK, I think I know what you mean about the first row. I am wondering if a little spot of glue would help to keep it in place? I sometime use PVA (Elmers in the States). I usually use a solution of 1 part glue mixed with four parts water. With regards to your knots slipping in some of the rows, yes I too had this problem when I first started out. Fantastic! I remember watching a net maker in St. Augustine, FL about 50 years ago, and there are still local cast net makers in central florida. You explain the knot techniques so very well - thank you!
Thank you. Just what I was looking for. I was trying to follow instructions from another video where they were only using the single knot method. I just wasn't working for me. I knew that there had to be another way for locking the knots. Again, Thank you very much.

Managed to get hold of a copy of the Quinton Winch book for AU$6! Used it and this tutorial to make my first net bag today. Biggest lesson learnt: Don't use a card the same size as your needle if you don't want to be in a world of pain expanding the loops. I kind of sidestepped your advise on that one :) Survived. Thanks.

This is a great video and I thank you very much. Back in the late 70's I was fishing commercially with my girlfriend's father and he taught me to sew/repair nets but I needed a refresher as I have some glass bouys I want to hang. Your video and oratory explanation is very clear and very close to what I remember. I realize this video was made a while ago but still it serves it's purpose. Mahalo for sharing
I spent years on warships and one job that I always thought I never could do wash commercial fisherman. Life at sea was tough, but I always felt for the fishermen. I am not sure that this could work to cove a glass float. There is a book that goes into detail on how to do this............. I think it might be a book called the Marlinspike Sailor, but not 100%. I was wrong, just checked and it is in Knots for Beachcombers and Mariners by Ron Edwards. It is only 32 pages, so I would have thought not too expensive. Maybe better off getting the Library to supply you with a copy?
Spent the last 4 hours trying to get past the second row after at least 4 total restarts. I made the brilliant choice of deciding that I want a nice cast net out of the couple reels of spare mono I had lying around, so instead of practicing with twine like any sane or rational person would do, I went straight for the stretchy, almost unknottable mono, to make things even worse, the ring I found wasn't exactly round, it was a square box section, so none of the knots held and I found myself having to keep tension on the loops or they'd just untie themselves and disappear into a mess of line from the tension imparted by my hand twisting the needle as I go through the knots. MANY mistakes were made, but I learned a thing or two, and I will be trying again, just not today, my hands are tired and my head hurts and I need a nap. Excellent video though, and truly world class explanations and instructions, you made this impossibly complicated thing make some sort of sense, I can't imagine trying to read a book and do this, I was pausing the video and watching and doing exactly as you did all the way through, can't do that with a book lol Any tips on tying stronger knots to the ring? I feel like that's where my mono is slipping and causing me a world of pain, having to constantly, individually pick out each loop and tension them to ensure it's still there, and then the horror of loosing a loop and having to try and fish it out of the bird's nest of nightmares. I was thinking of supergluing it to the ring, but I don't think it'd sit still long enough for the glue to set.
Alright it's been a couple hours, gonna give it a try again, this time using some nylon twine I went and bought along with some (40) 1/4 oz egg sinkers, I'm thinking that's not enough weight for the hopefully 6ft cast net I plan on making, but I'm gonna try and find out. I'm combining your tutorial on round net building and some other cast net building videos, those aren't as good quality as this one, but one or two do explain the one missing piece of this puzzle, the braille lines. Oh and I forgot to mention earlier, I don't have a needle, so I looked at yours, traced it onto a piece of 1/4" scrap wood that I had kicking about, and cut out the shape using a dremel, after a little sanding, it's pretty great, and works really well too, I'd recommend slimming down the spike in the center, makes it easier to load the needle, but be careful not to compromise the strength of the spike. I might have to give it a nice stain if this build goes well, it would have earned a place in my workshop lol The hardest thing to find for some reason was the solid ring, I had a pair of 1" stainless rings but I was hopeful to up that to at least 2", but after 3 different hardwares and a variety store, I gave up and just started over with the 1" rings, I really hope it won't be a problem later down the line because it is a fairly integral part of the entire net that would require some particularly clever thinking to fix, just thinking about it makes me want to stop and wait until I can find a larger ring, but then I'll never find the ring and will never do the project and realize that it really didn't matter that much, gotta do it to find out.

Johnny, I see its been a year since you posted these videos but I just wanted to say thank you since I just now found them. I have been wanting to make nets for some time and finding you on UA-cam was indeed timely. Since COVID-19 struck, I've been stuck far from home in an RV with little cupboard and counter space. I found your videos on making circular nets and thus began my experiences with netting. I now have net bags for apples, oranges and onions. I have found that suspending them in a net has increased the overall time the fruits and vegetables remain good to eat. I can't remember the last time I was able to get to the bottom of an orange bag without the fruit spoiling. Thanks for the assist during a time I'm sure you didn't see coming. There are good reasons to believe in providence.

Very good videos. Thanks for going to the trouble of producing them. I'm making a round fishing dip net now. I want one that is a cylinder about 2' dia. x 2' deep rather than a funnel shape. I didn't think it through. I made double loops on row 2, 3, and 4 instead of something like 2, 5, and 8. It'll work, but the bottom looks more like a basket than a net, and I've ended up tying about a thousand more knots than required.

I used to carry a wee 2cm toggle that I made using bakery twine and some Sculpy clay. It was stamped with a dwarf head, and looked neat. It got over my toe, and I could get a ring started easily. Then just keep netting until I had the right-sized bag for apple picking. The carrying handles were essentially woven lanyards from the same twine. Yes, I always carried a pen knife, matches, twine, bandaids, a fish hook, and a dime when I was a kid.

I think this will work well to make a net for hanging melons on a trellis. I think after adding more loops on each layer, at some point just keep the number of loops the same. That would make a tube. It would be interesting if I could then reduce the number of loops to make a closed net ball. Then I'll need to figure out how to leave an opening in the side part way up to place the melon inside the net.
so, first off, thank you for your videos, you exlain your knots much better than any of the the videos that I watched on the subject. I started off wanting to make a cast net, but it kind of morphed into me making a hammock and plan on making my cast net once I get some more practice... However, I have some some questions that I need some help with. The twine I am using slips really easy, so all of my splice knots have been blood knots (instead of just splicing at a pre-exising knot), so essentially I should only have loose ends at the ends of the hammock that I will further support with maybe some heat to fuse the nylon and/or some super glue after some experimentation... That said, I would like to know if there is a less bulky knot that you could suggest. Also, I am going to have to place narrowers at the other end (once I get there), which seems pretty straight forward, but I do have a slight concern about how I will attach the ring on the other end. Do you have any tips on that?
Hmmm. I got some nylon twine from online. It can’t keep a knot, it’s the most slippery stuff I’ve ever seen. Is there a key word I need to use to get twine or rope that actually knots. (Even bowline knot won’t hold, just comes undone when I release tension)
I feel your pain, when it comes to buying twine etc, it is always best if you can handle it first. What country are you in, as I may be able to direct you to the source that I use?
@@tritun5154 OK, that makes it a little tricky................... The name of what I use is: Coloured whipping twine 200m spool 1mm 3 ply multifilament polypropylene rigging. I do often find that gardening places do a nice selection of natural twines, this stuff is great for net making as it is extremely easy to tie and keep a knot.
Hi Johnny D; I have made more hammocks than I have fingers and toes, I found that using a double knot I never have a slip knot in the web and when casting on another loop single knot is sufficient with no slip and less bulk in the knots. I don't have the patience for all the camera work, but I like working knots with a practical, if sometimes somewhat obscure purpose, like baggywrincle. :}

Why are there two different sizes of mesh holes? The double loops have much smaller mesh sizes alternating with much larger mesh sizes. Very visible at 23:38
@20:56, when starting the fourth loop of the second row by grabbing the third loop of the first row, didn't you grab the wrong loop? The whole thing flipped over, and instead of grabbing #3, you grabbed #20.
Hi there Johnny , i need your advice for the best possible twine that will last me a very long time , i plan to make my self a keeper net = its what you place fish in while your fishing with the intent to release back into the water at the end of the day , also i will be making a very large landing net , it will also be used to scoop up anything up to a 25 kilo fish , there is so called twine made in India and China , some of the stuff is called polypropylene , some polyethylene and some simply nylon , i will not be looking at monofilament because it is basically fishing line and i know it has a small lifespan , any advice will be at the very least a start because i know nothing about netting materials etc , thank you for your time and your answer
I also think about these issues, as to what I would use if I was making a net for long-term use. I am currently messing about with Size 12 tarred line ( amzn.to/2L4GO0g ) I originally bought this at whipping twine and really enjoyed working with it. I did expect it to be a little bit too stiff for net making, but I have to say I am pleased with the results I am getting. I did a long time ago ask why synthetic line is tarred? I was told that it offered additional protection especially from UV. This photo goo.gl/fE5ZfK shows a hammock made from tarred line, but slightly thicker than the size 12 above.
put your twine spool on a paper towel holder (the dowel type that sits on the counter not the "c" type that screws to a wall) for dispensing while loading the needle :). or sit on the toilet and put the spool on the "TP" holder :)
Sitting on the toilet sounds good to me!!! Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
Haven't started yet( other than making paracord bracelets), right now just a string nut.(string, rope, etc.) Actually just ordered my first set of needles yesterday so I can start practicing, I want to make a cargo net out of paracord for the truck, a phone cover/purse so my wife can hang her phone around her neck like she asked for years ago and we'll see where it goes from there :)
.... and now you are on your way to very sore fingers. I think if I were to do a cargo net, I may make it this way: ua-cam.com/video/gfTWgMTqGqY/v-deo.html using the single knot method. There is also another way that I have not covered and a YT search on net making will bring some up.
it will be a while they just shipped my needles yesterday form Texas, granted it's only about 800 miles but I need to learn what I'm doing first, but your interest is encouraging :) also I got "cheep" needles (a set of 6, #3 to #8 for $13.32) I'll consider better needles if I like net knitting :) www.ebay.com/itm/302685788427

Do you use a separate piece of cord for each layer, or how do you make subsequent increases? I tried just going continuously around, but the results were wretched.

@@americancajun6085 I have this happen sometimes and it boils down to the netting twine that I am using (a little shiny and slippery) What I do in this case is; make up a mixture of PVA glue and water 50/50, then brush some onto the knots. Johnny Debt, I used your square net vid. to make a landing net. Now I want to put a flat bottom on it . I'm looking at your round net and the mesh just looks to big. Do you have any ideas? Thought tomorrow I would go out and make a real small shuttle and gave but from what I've already tried it's going to have to be tiney.
The size of the knot board or knot gauge will determine the size of the mesh. You then need to ensure that the netting needle will then fit through your desired size of mesh that you are creating. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

if you don't have a netting needle: Layout about 8 loops of cord the length of the needle you'd feel comfortable using. (the longer it is the more cord you can use on a narrow starting loop.) holding these loops firmly in one hand you are going to bring the cord down about an inch and start wrapping the cord as tightly as possible around the loops until you reach the other end, where you will continue the wrap back over the first tight wrap, back and forth until you reach a point where it would be too thick to pass through your starter loop for the net. essentially you are making a long narrow spool. Hope i explained this well enough

The honest answer is, I don't know. However, thinking about it, maybe just create a normal net and then secure that to the frame? This is the video on making a normal fishing net: ua-cam.com/video/gfTWgMTqGqY/v-deo.html
Oh, I wish there was an easy answer to that. My personal experience with net making, only goes as far as making nets for my own needs. None of those needs are fishing. The board that I use is the size that is used for making purse nets, in other words the mesh prevents a small rabbit from escaping. If you want I can give you the size of my board? If you just continue going round you don’t need to cut your cord then attach it to the toggle (which is more faf than you need) and just increase continuously till your needle is finished!

Excellent video though, and truly world class explanations and instructions, you made this impossibly complicated thing make some sort of sense, I can't imagine trying to read a book and do this, I was pausing the video and watching and doing exactly as you did all the way through, can't do that with a book lol
Any tips on tying stronger knots to the ring?
I might have to give it a nice stain if this build goes well, it would have earned a place in my workshop lol
The hardest thing to find for some reason was the solid ring, I had a pair of 1" stainless rings but I was hopeful to up that to at least 2", but after 3 different hardwares and a variety store, I gave up and just started over with the 1" rings, I really hope it won't be a problem later down the line because it is a fairly integral part of the entire net that would require some particularly clever thinking to fix, just thinking about it makes me want to stop and wait until I can find a larger ring, but then I'll never find the ring and will never do the project and realize that it really didn't matter that much, gotta do it to find out.
Very methodical way making a round net. Tnx.

Very good videos. Thanks for going to the trouble of producing them. I'm making a round fishing dip net now. I want one that is a cylinder about 2' dia. x 2' deep rather than a funnel shape.
To make the net smaller you could do something similar as in the purse net when tapering it down again.
Thank you so much for sharing! You explain very well and very understandable!
so, first off, thank you for your videos, you exlain your knots much better than any of the the videos that I watched on the subject.
You may find this useful, also on there is a purse net, which in effect is a hammock: igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-beginners/

You flipped the toggle on the second row? 2 loops. Next loop. Then the dbl loop the toggle goes the other way?
Hi Johnny D; I have made more hammocks than I have fingers and toes, I found that using a double knot I never have a slip knot in the web and when casting on another loop single knot is sufficient with no slip and less bulk in the knots. I don't have the patience for all the camera work, but I like working knots with a practical, if sometimes somewhat obscure purpose, like baggywrincle. :}
i finish my first hammock today, i also use double knot because the single knot if i will put heavy object it will slip and will turn into a slip knot

Yes, sometimes you do end up watching stuff you never thought you would. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 😀
Good little vid can I makes horse hay net in this way? How do I increase to get it suitable for a horse?
At the bottom of the blog post you will see the pattern that you need to follow. igkt-solent.co.uk/net-making-beginners/ Also if you have a look at my Purse Net Video, you will see how to also increase and decrease the size of a net: ua-cam.com/video/TcsYhpMNKvQ/v-deo.html
Your explanation is soooooooo clear! Thank you soooo much. You're appreciated by EVEYONE here.

I need some help please! I would like to make it by myself with 4m diameter, however I don't know how many squares should include each row (each square should be 3.3cm)
May I know what do you do with the ring after you finish making your net.?
Generally the ring remains in place. If you do not like the metal ring, you could make a ring using the netting line?
Both are needed.👍

Dear Mr. Johnny , thank you for your wonderful and helpful video ! It would be difficult to make a pdf scan of that vintage book ?! and share a link ? it will be such a pity , to loose this wonderful publication , in time ... no editor publish such a book , anymore ! that you for your support and you kindness ! Greetings from Athens Greece !
What you do not show in this video is how you tied the last loop on the ring to the first loop on the ring.
It is easier to use a round wooden ball with a hole thru it, it is easier to handle the loops and keeps everything straight.
Good job sir

An important skill.
Yet, some would not know what to do with it, or what it is for! Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Hi Johnny you are amazing man.thanks gat bless you....
Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?
put your twine spool on a paper towel holder (the dowel type that sits on the counter not the "c" type that screws to a wall) for dispensing while loading the needle :). or sit on the toilet and put the spool on the "TP" holder :)
I would really love to see the results when you do one. If you can drag and drop a photo here, please: goo.gl/mQgf8E
it will be a while they just shipped my needles yesterday form Texas, granted it's only about 800 miles but I need to learn what I'm doing first, but your interest is encouraging :) also I got "cheep" needles (a set of 6, #3 to #8 for $13.32) I'll consider better needles if I like net knitting :) www.ebay.com/itm/302685788427
GOOD VERY VERY GOOD CONGRATULATIONS.

You are welcome i enjoyed your video. I am a decorative knotter and i make bags but i cannot find the tool as yet.
Are you able to show me any of your work, as I do love to see other peoples knot-craft or knotting solutions? You can drag and drop a photo here, please: bit.ly/yourknotwork
i am not a knotter as such but i do crochet bags and i was interested to use your knots for making a bag.If i am successful i will post a photo.
Please do.

can you make a video showing how to make a round landing net ?
Not being an expert on landing nets, but I would have thought you make the net and expand as shown till you have the right diameter, then just add rows without increasing the diameter. Maybe someone who uses landing nets will pop over and leave an additional comment?
if you will do a vid on that it will be awsome , it is a great video idea :)@@KnottingKnots
@@KnottingKnots what did you do with the line after you finish each row ? you cut it but you did not show on both rows what did you do with the end 14:00
@@KnottingKnots what does increasing the net loops do ? can i simply make 20 loops and not add more and it will fit my landing net rings ? what does adding loops do ?
i tried making the net i have the needles and gauge card but with the yarn i used white twisted i think its nylon the knots were not holding
:(
Do you use a separate piece of cord for each layer, or how do you make subsequent increases? I tried just going continuously around, but the results were wretched.

Need some help please. When I finish my first 20 and tie it off all my loops become loose. Could it be that I'm using a larger plastic ring. Should I go as many as possible till its tight
Are you saying that they are loose on the actual ring?
@@KnottingKnots yes they all come loose. I've done it 10 times same result. Using a plastic ring. ???
@@americancajun6085 I have this happen sometimes and it boils down to the netting twine that I am using (a little shiny and slippery) What I do in this case is; make up a mixture of PVA glue and water 50/50, then brush some onto the knots. I find that this does sort the problem out for me. Alternatively you could make up a ring using a rougher type of rope.
Thank you. Great teacher by the way. I'm searching for the book knots and nets no one seems to be able to find it. Mabey because it is as old as me
Haha
I want to make and use net bags to support squash grown in a trellis.

I am about to design the needle and 3d print it and then attempt to make some loops with some braid line. I plan to make some crab nets :) 👍👌 Cheers from Louisiana!
Thanks for the informative vid mate
Cheers for leaving a comment, glad that you found it informative. I assume that you are a practical knotter?
Johnny Debt im more of a birds nest maker at the moment lol ur vids have helped a fair bit
When you have produced some stuff, you can drag and drop a photo here, please: goo.gl/mQgf8E would love to see it.
Nathan Walter I am very happy to hear about your favourite businesses are you doing today my mother not come through to you doing today I am come my 🏠
Sorry, what are you trying to say?
Johnny Debt, I used your square net vid. to make a landing net. Now I want to put a flat bottom on it . I'm looking at your round net and the mesh just looks to big. Do you have any ideas? Thought tomorrow I would go out and make a real small shuttle and gave but from what I've already tried it's going to have to be tiney.
The size of the knot board or knot gauge will determine the size of the mesh. You then need to ensure that the netting needle will then fit through your desired size of mesh that you are creating. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
@@KnottingKnots ya that's what I was trying to say but auto correct changed gage , which was spelled wrong, to gave , thank you I'll give it a try. I'm new to net making and making all my own tools.
@@papawed489 Brilliant, would love to see the tools when done? I love net making, it is so relaxing and you can absorb all the sounds and things going on around you. I often look at a finished piece for work and remember, the warmth of the sun on my back, my dog lying next to me and snoring etc etc. Enjoy the whole process Ed.
if you don't have a netting needle:
Layout about 8 loops of cord the length of the needle you'd feel comfortable using. (the longer it is the more cord you can use on a narrow starting loop.)
holding these loops firmly in one hand you are going to bring the cord down about an inch and start wrapping the cord as tightly as possible around the loops until you reach the other end, where you will continue the wrap back over the first tight wrap, back and forth until you reach a point where it would be too thick to pass through your starter loop for the net. essentially you are making a long narrow spool.
Hope i explained this well enough
It is always good to hear about different techniques in doing the same thing. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
I want to re mesh my crab pot doors will this method work
The honest answer is, I don't know. However, thinking about it, maybe just create a normal net and then secure that to the frame? This is the video on making a normal fishing net: ua-cam.com/video/gfTWgMTqGqY/v-deo.html
What size board and cord is best for rectangular fishing net?
Oh, I wish there was an easy answer to that. My personal experience with net making, only goes as far as making nets for my own needs. None of those needs are fishing. The board that I use is the size that is used for making purse nets, in other words the mesh prevents a small rabbit from escaping. If you want I can give you the size of my board? If you just continue going round you don’t need to cut your cord then attach it to the toggle (which is more faf than you need) and just increase continuously till your needle is finished!
Hi is this method applicable to throwing nets or cast nets?
