I agree with you all the way. Rachel seems very selfish, during the play, depending on what you choose, I noticed when Chloe(as Ariel) asks to be released by Rachel's character, Rachel goes way off script and bangs the staff on the ground telling her no. Their entire dialogue was focused on that, Rachel keeping Chloe to herself.
So I believe that Rachel was the storm in the first game, and Chloe was the butterfly. Since Rachel died, she wanted Chloe in the afterlife with her because she's selfish, like Chloe's dad warned "fire is selfish and wants all the beauty to itself" but Chloe's spirit needed to see Max one last time. so Rachel granted Chloe that wish, or perhaps it was her gift to Chloe. so Chloe (butterfly) gave max the power to manipulate time so they could see each other and share last moments together.
Rachel, being the storm, gave Max a choice, either she has Chloe, or she'll destroy the entire town.

It originates from her being very torn apart on the inside. She didn't tell Chloe because she's afraid of how Chloe's going to react, and out of guilt the 18 year old didn't. Also being good with people doesn't mean she intentionally manipulated them. There's botub good and bad to Rachel

    Everyone going after Max:
Imagine being 13, your bestfriends father has just died, you're forced to move because of your parents,
    What would you write?
About your happy new life and new friends and adventures with your mom and dad?
I wouldn't know what to say. Or what would be wrong.
In that teenage mind, she might've just thought Chloe blamed her for this and also for leaving, and couldn't bring herself to reply or write.
Whilst Rachel just takes and takes.
She puts someone she barely know anything about - hell not even caring to get to know her emotionally, only pouting about her own problems and her own sadness, into life threatening and extremely illegal situations (I mean come on? Weed and breaking and entering a school to have a swim ain't too bad in comparison just rebellious teenager angst ala Chloe).
She's 16(?) and acts less mature than Max did at 13. Those 3 years usually do A LOT. She saw what that drug lord could do, stabbing her almost to death - which was her own fault tbh, if she hadn't hit him Frank might've talked him out of it. But she triggered him to want to kill both her and Chloe.
    For what?
She feels sad about her life?
    Change it.
Find your mother, internet's a thing.
Chloe's dad DIED. When she was 13-14, brutally and unexpectedly.
    She didn't get a choice.
    Rachel did.
    Max is better 100%.

my problem was that she kept making promises to chloe that she'll always talk even after her dad died she kept making promises on the tape player and it just made me so mad. Also she can at least respond to her friend and it was clear that even with her dads death they were still able to be friends. sure you can say that she had anxiety but to me responding to your best friend is the least she can do. I still love her though but one thing i've learned in the LIS universe is that everyone has flaws

The impression I've gotten from BtS and the fandom is that most of the people who seem to love Rachel so much are on the younger side -- ie they fall for Rachel's charms, the same way Chloe did. It makes enough sense. Rachel was designed to be liked, and she actively PRESENTS herself in ways begging to be liked. And yet, those who are older seem to very consistently see Rachel's behavior for what it is: destructive and manipulative. She is a teenage girl, she makes bad decisions, so did Chloe, and to an extent Max as well. But she DOES lie and manipulate. Even if she doesn't INTEND to hurt people, she DOES. And the game (BtS) doesn't even legit TRY to call her out on her shit. It PRETENDS like it's going to in Ep1 and Ep2, which I loved -- yet it's like they did a 180 (ALMOST like somebody higher up MADE them?) to try and appeal to fans who liked Rachel. Like Chloe, the developers themselves apparently became so blinded they didn't want to confront and own up to how Rachel was negatively impacting people around her. They bent over BACKWARDS to come up with some crap out of nowhere with NO connection to the original game's lore JUST to give Rachel some kind of "terrible" situation to excuse her behavior. And the ONLY character in Ep3 who even QUESTIONS Rachel's behavior? Fucking ELLIOT. Seriously? Don't even get me started on what a bad idea that ENTIRE scene was, on so many levels.
I have a personality that functions a LOT like Chloe when it comes to romance. And I dated and even MARRIED someone who was a lot like Rachel. I have lived the infatuation which gives way to toxic realities, which makes me feel so STUPID in retrospect. Rachel did NOT deserve what happened to her -- but she also did not do much good for herself OR for Chloe in how she acted. She's a manipulative, poisonous teen who needed better guidance, not someone to ENABLE her bad behavior (a list of dumb things which BtS exponentially increased). Maybe the circumstances LEADING her to do dumb stuff weren't her fault, but you could just as easily say the same for Chloe, who ALSO was immature and manipulative in parts of LiS (until Max's positive influence started to wane that off a little). End of the day, a person still CHOOSES how to react to bad life stuff. Rachel chose to repeat the cycle her father and mother lived out.

I don't agree with the game "bending backwards" to make rachel seem like a good person. It fact it keeps giving chloe all kinds of warnings that rachel is going to get her in trouble but you don't have the option to call her out on her bs because the game is a prequel and that's the story...chloe ends up tricked by her.

William in one of the dreams says the fire is jealous and wants everything for itself, not only did Rachel start that fire but in another dream she is on fire like you showed in your video. Rachel is like a beautiful ghost. You can see her, fall in love with her, but you can never get close to her to see what she truly is. I don’t think she completely used Chloe. I like to think that she did have some feeling towards Chloe, but there is no doubt that she did use her and others. Though this is not surprising since she grew up in a privileged family, being an only child meaning all attention was on her and everything she wanted could be achieved easily, which could (and in this case did) cause any person to have a sense of superiority. Plus, as we’ve seen, she is a brilliant actor who can morph into different characters wearing different masks, both on stage and in her actual life. Overall Rachel is a very interesting character. Not good nor bad, but in that morally grey area many people are in.

  • @hiiroshi

For me, how you play as Chloe also affects Rachel's behaviour. In the dressing room, if you succeed to get Rachel into the Tempest role, Victoria will be the one who attempts to drug Rachel. And Rachel will not drug Victoria if you made Chloe lower Vic's self-esteem.
And when Rachel set the whole park on fire and caused both of them (Rachel & Chloe) to face the principal, Rachel actually managed to talk to Principal Wells that it was her idea. But no matter what you choice is, whether Chloe take the blame or let Rachel be, the principal still expelled Chloe for some other sceptical reasons.
I agree that Rachel is an individualist, but pretty sure she's actually care for Chloe, she invited Chloe to go outside Arcadia because she knew that Chloe hates that place right from the start.
Rachel is also seemingly a short-minded risk-taker who doesn't think much before causing troubles such as set fire on the whole park or request Chloe to go after Sera again, despite of what had happened to her back then. She's just doesn't think of any consequences that far.
She hates fake person. She said that she can only trust Chloe in her life. I don't think she has the heart to manipulate Chloe that far. She shows Chloe both of her good and bad sides, unlike the perfection she always shows to people in Blackwell academy.

Late comer to the LiS & BtS fandom here. To me, Rachel seems a bit of a sociopath. I took an instant dislike to her - she gave me a knowing, calculating vibe that is all to adult and rather creepy for a 16 year old. And from there all the bad things she does that this video gets spot on. Even if I take my TeamMax hat off and try to put aside any jealousy I feel on Max's behalf, Rachel is still an objectively unlikable and frankly dangerous character.

I once stuck up for Eliot and felt kinda bad for him, so I asked the Writer on Twitter if it was wrong for me to feel bad for him, he responded back to me pretty much saying that the thing that made Eliot so unique is that he is the only one that see's through Rachel's bullshit, while he himself is such a flawed character that was one of the things that he was right on.
So I think your meant to feel a sort of connection to Rachel like you do with the popular girl at school that hangs out with you in your worst moments. It's spellbinding in a way but it also blinds you to some of the more bad qualities about them.

  • @bunnybi4910
    @bunnybi4910 6 років тому +183

I loved how solid you were with all of your points! I definitely agree with you on all of them. Weirdly though, personally, I still liked how Rachel Amber was written? I definitely agree with you that she's not a good person and in NO WAY a healthy influence in Chloe's life (or likely anyone else she comes in contact with) but for storytelling purposes, I kinda liked that all of that was included in her true colors. Because the first game already suggested that Rachel wasn't this perfect picture that the entire town painted her to be; but in BtS, we get to see the gritty reality of just how true that is. A character that makes the kind of impact Rachel does in a lot of other media doesn't tend to be written very realistically; either they're that Mary Sue level of perfect, or they end up being just a very charismatic villain who reveals their diabolical scheme at the climax of the story (Like Mark Jefferson tbh). Many people can say they've known a Rachel Amber in their life - often in their youth (I know I have), and I thought the writers did a great job showing how easy it can be to be trapped in that kind of relationship; how easy it is for that person to make you care about them so you're easier to manipulate. Hell, they even showed why it can be so difficult to tell people like this "no," because they'll show you just enough of their dangerous side for you to fear it and feel threatened by it.
Rachel is definitely toxic as a person, but she was well-written and I was very impressed with her characterization. Her relationship with Chloe inspires good discussions about how being happy AND healthy in a relationship aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. And I definitely feel that's a topic of conversation today's youth should be having more.

A lot of people try to excuse her by saying that she just acts before she thinks and thats why she ends up doing messed up things, which i can't agree with. Like how we saw in the train scene, Rachel is actually a really good analyst (she is able to tell what is a truth and what a lie by a really good analysis if you ask me). Rachel thinks like a chess player - she very well knows what she wants, what position she needs and what to sacrifice so she can get it. Like, yeah, she is also pretty impulsive sometimes. For example, i'm sure that she didn't start the fire on purpose and all, but i'm also sure that if something is important to her she will plan everything and will play her role till the end.
For example, the meeting with Chloe and the principle. I think she didn't try to take the blame driven by her care for Chloe. I think she knew that if she takes the blame, her action will have almost zero consequences (lmao max is shaking) since she's never been in trouble before and even if it does have, i don't think she really cared about it, she was planning to leave arcadia bay real soon anyway. So she knew that even if she takes the blame, only one crucial thing will happen. And this is gaining Chloe's trust entirely. I mean, of course i can't know this for sure but i've had my fair share of experience with people like her and i think i that helped me to understand her better. I believe that's the way she thinks, because she also said it herself: she likes to play, lie and act. And it's also a fact that she's a manipulator.
I don't really wanna go far enough to say that she's a bad person, because although she plays with the other people and is over all fake, i believe she's not happy with this part of herself and tries to hunt it away. I think that's also why she is so much against her father, because he gifted her with the part of herself she hates the most. Still, what's really important to understand is that this is no excuse of the shit she's done. Everyone, everyone has their reasons. Bullies, toxic people, robbers, shit even killers have their own reasons for doing what they do. A reason is not equal to excuse. Whatever someone's been trough you are not by any means obligated to take shit from them just to make them happy again. I think that Rachel's character teaches this one very very important lesson.
Okay, this comment is fucking long already but i wanna say my opinion about one more thing. Chloe and Rachel's relationship. Well, we could never know if Rachel ever truly showed her true face in front of Chloe or if she genuinely cared bout her, but i think that their relationship wasn't neither as amazing or as unhealthy as the people think. Like yeah, Rachel purposefully used her, played her and almost got her killed, which, don't get me wrong, this itself is fucking sick and this is why no matter how well Rachel's character is written, i'll never be able to like her. But then, after the shit show ended, we saw that Rachel never left Chloe's side even if she lied about a lotta stuff. We saw her making Chloe genuinely happy and making her as confident and cocky as we can see her in LiS. I mean, if Rachel did not die, after some period of time, the things would've played horribly. Chloe was gonna come out of this game even more hurt and broken. So, in the long run, their pair is truly bad. But for the few years they had together, the outcome was good. Just as ridiculous as it sounds, Rachel helped Chloe, and nothing, even her being a bad person or not can change this fact.
So... Yeah. This was my analysis. To sum it up, Rachel is toxic and it's a good thing she's not in Chloe's life anymore, but still they had their own moments and purpose. (And btw, i'm a pricefield shipper)

The thing that I both love and hate about Rachel Amber is the fact that everything we learn about her as we play the games or interact with other characters is so vague, like the most the barebones minimum information that it ultimately leaves the decision of whether or not she's a good person up to the individual players. I really want to believe that Rachel is a good girl who just happens to make some stupid mistakes as all teenagers do, but too many of the shady things she does leaves me with this sense that she in the long run was only looking out for herself and didn't care who she screwed over to get it

Your views are pretty well thought out, but Rachel never said “go after Damon” at any point. She wanted to find Sera, who unbeknownst to anyone at that point, was being held captive. There is also the option of mentally breaking Victoria before the play and making her quit because she knows she fluffed off her part as Rachel’s under study.
My own personal thought on Rachel was that she was a time bomb, and as her father even said, if she met Sera she would end up just like her. Even if you don’t get the ending where she meets her mother, we all know what she became. I wouldn’t call her a bad person in Before the Storm, but self serving? No doubt.

Does it really matter? Rachel and Chloe found out that Sera is associated with Frank and Frank is associated with Damon. When they wanted to learn about Rachel's mother, she is stabbed by *Damon* . *Damon* was the one who stopped them when they tried to find Sera. You don't really have to have high IQs to understand Damon is linked to Sera in some way too, and I think Rachel is smart enough to understand that.

i‘m pretty late on that whole thing but I think another sign for rachel using chloe is that rachel plays prospera in the play while chloe is playing ariel. in the summary of the play in the game it says that ariel is subject to prospera's will. So I think that, even though rachel says something off script (witch was selfish as well), this is the way of the developers to say us that rachel actually is using chloe for what i don’t know. or probably i’m just over interpreting this stuff.

I get your points, but here's why I disagree:
    1. Rachel is a child/teen in this game. I think we overlook that Rachel is 16 in this game. I get she can be manipulative at times, but it's in a very juvenile manner. Even when she's "acting" it's evident when she's doing it. You mentioned the train scene; you could tell she's was hiding something by not telling Chloe why they were there in the first place.
    2. I understand putting Chloe in danger, but she does this with herself too. She fought grown men for Chloe and accidentally started a fire. Like a child, she didn't feel bad because she doesn't understand the depth of how serious a fire like that was.
    3. The Tea scene for new was Victoria trying to drug Rachel. I think they reversed it to show she's not any less petty than Victoria
    4. She doesn't force Chloe to do anything. She might talk her into something, but other than that their trouble making is mutual.
    5. No one blames the adults in this game. Mr. Jefferson is a perv/murder, Frank is a pedophilie and Rachel's father was a abuser/kidnapper. They used or abused Rachel and she still got blamed for their actions. I'm not saying she's an angel, but I think you made her seem worse than what she actually was

One of the things that made me think about what Rachel really is, is how Chloe mentions her disappearance in the first game.
Chloe tells Max that Rachel said she "found someone that changed her life" and just disappeared since.
Even after all they went thru in BtS, just disappearing from Chloe's life like that is bs.
Idk if Rachel is essentially a good or bad person, but she certainly keeps making decisions that end up hurting Chloe more than she already is, and to me she is undeserving of Chloe's full trust.

Without even watching the video (and I will after this comment is written) I can tell you now that if Rachel Amber were in a Fallout game, her Karma level would be Evil. She doesn't give a **** about anyone but her self. She started a fire that could have killed hundreds - and probably did kill around 50 or so animals. She used Frank to feed her drug habits. She latterly disowns the parents that gave her a perfect home. She knows human psychology, but doesn't actually use it to help others until she deems necessary. And she vandalises things like a baby when she doesn't get her way. You know how girls always like the bad boys? Well everyone likes a bad girl too.

I mean... Rachel Amber reminded me of a real life friend of mine who also happens to have the same first name.
Rachel Amber and my friend Rachel are incredibly manipulative and don't care about the consequences of their actions. Also when shit gets rough they run. I remember Rachel Amber being non-confrontational and flighty whenever she had to take real accountability. Same goes with my real life friend. I wouldn't necessarily call them a bad person but they definitely are fucked up. Chloe often exhibits traits of someone with BPD and it can attract Narcissistic people like Rachel Amber. They work only because their negative traits work well together. Chloe doesn't want to feel abandoned and needs to feel like she is important to someone. Rachel needs the supply and someone she can consistently rely on that won't question her needs. I think this is also why Chloe later on ended up being so selfish, manipulative, and without consideration for how she affected Max. She was emulating Rachel Amber.

  • @user-ld6yj9er3c

I find Rachel's character very unfinished. Like, as a reference in LiS she appears as perfect, but that is because she is just a memory, and memories may be extreme. BUT in BtS she is just as ideal. The perfect student, yet a rebel, yet a loving friend, yet a fierce enemy, yet a deeply wounded little daddy's girl, yet manipulative and abusive, yet such a free spirit. I do not find those characteristics to be signs of a complicated character, rather signs of the writers doing a poor job at balance. Besides, it makes Chloe's character appear bleak and actually very weak (despite the badass vibe they tried to give her) on contrast. Rachel decided to be friends with Chloe because she got fed up with her previous friends, while Chloe decided to be friends with Rachel because she just had no friends at all, period. Their relationship with is very rushed and is neither friendship nor romance, and most of the gameplay is Chloe doing stuff bc Rachel said so. We do not know what brought her to that Firewalk show, we do not know her history with Frank either, we see only a sliver of her relationship with Nathan. I thought the prequel will give me some closure, but it left unaswered questions unanswered, adding new questions on top. I also hoped that Rachel's destructive (the fire), posessive (literally says so on an astrology poster in her room), manipulative (the couple in the park), ungrateful (her 1st time on the junkyard) and plain evil (drugging Victoria) behaviour will be judged. Like, those will be the things that she realizes are bad. OR at some point Chloe will see that. Instead, some of those traits are treated as the expressions of her fiery personality or she manages to get away with a laid-back "sorry".
There were just too many things without consequences in BtS. In LiS a girl DIED bc you did not read one of her postcards and put her on hold once or twice or something, just saying That would be all thank you for coming to my stoned TED talk and I'll see myself out

    • @DrLiaraTSoni

I beg to disagree. A person can be all of those things you mentioned. They're pretty fucking rare. I myself only know one person who fits like a glove. No one knows what to make of her. She exhudes a vibe of toxicity if you only look at her from a certain angle (literally everyone projects on her, never being quite able to see her transparently even when she is not trying to hide anything at all-- it's honestly amazing. It must feel like hell sometimes), but if you get near, she feels like sunshine, love, chill, strength, and like.. the genuine thing. She's extremely charming to the point she's disarming and she knows this. She's powerful, confident, ambitious, beautiful, likes to act and, of course, have fun. A social chameleon, she fits in with everyone. Not only does she has some girly vibes (Barbie sort of vibes)--sometimes she also takes a 180° turn to joke around and act like a tomboy.
Honestly, people like her exist. It's terrifying how much they can achieve in a social circle within a single night. All eyes on her. I've observed pretty deeply as she flows in the night time more than once and I still cannot manage to believe it. She has certain things she can be embarrassed about, but in other ways she's entirely shameless, even when anyone would expect at least some hesitation. I honestly cannot understand it. Very rarely do I manage to spot a pattern.

I don't think Rachel is a bad person. She is undoubtedly selfish, capricious and always looking for something from the people she attends. But beyond that, she's eminently benevolent, and she's the only one who's really worried about Chloe - except Joyce -, wanting to get her out of her miserable life. She is really better than typical antagonists characters like Victoria or Nathan.
She would have left everything behind - her mother, her popularity in Blackwell, all she has ever known - to run away with one person: Chloe. She gave her hope and literally saved her life. She protected her everytime she could. Ok, she's got a lot of temper, she can be deeply pragmatic and individualist, but Chloe and Rachel fit together perfectly. I think we don't play Life is Strange as a rule for its great seemliness, but I loved the relationship between the two girls and how they have fun when they are both. They are free, no matter what.
Plus, Rachel never forced Chloe to do anything. She was already a delinquent before their meeting. All that can be impartially said is that Rachel allowed Chloe to live again, and that Chloe returned it to her with her eternal devotion.

Rachel is kind of a chaotic neutral, maybe erring towards evil. If you play Chloe into her hands, she's a very manipulative and self-centered person. If you play Chloe a different way, you kind of put Rachel in her place and mellow her out. And, of course, at the end of the game you can do what others have done for her throughout her life by coddling her and hiding her from how the world really works, or you can slap her with the cold dead fish of reality. I think the way you play the game, particularly at the end, goes a long way towards determining if Rachel ends up being a good person or not.

You could say that she did it cause she’s one of the top students so she know she wouldn’t be striked down hard to gain Chloe’s trust. But she also stood up to a very dangerous drug dealer for Chloe.
However, I’d be lying if I said that she isn’t manipulative or uses people. Chloe, Frank, her class mates, and even Mr. Jefferson were all being used by her selfish desires.

I was totally confused about that while playing it for the first time. I wonder if a modern day Chloe looks back on Rachel and realizes how manipulated and taken for a loop she was. In a more intense situation you could say, while this person caused death and suffering, you can't blame her because she didn't mean to. Mental illness puts you into a shade of grey rather than black or white. Rachel lied, cheated and hurt people all with little to no remorse or reflection. She may have hated herself for the way she acted, she may have inside felt remorse but she never tried to make up for her mistakes, she barely apologized and continues to put the same people into similar situations again and again. I'm highly mentally ill and have my own problems with manipulation and lying and while I agree, when in such a mental state you may not mean to hurt people, but you are still hurting people. She may not have meant to cause all the pain she did (which is debatable since she shows clear signs of planning and consideration when it comes to her own benefit) honestly though, she may have loved or at least cared for chloe, or whatever but that meant nothing in the heat of the moment. Her few breaks where she seems to realize what she is and what she is doing, are over quickly and moved past. She started a fire, and did nothing seeing the fire spread like even try to pick the can back up or kick dirt on the flames or even call for emergency services (oh but she would have gotten in trouble) she just screams and cries like a toddler. She puts herself and others into danger and then encourages supposed "loved ones" to continue going after someone who could have killed her (and did put her in the hospital) after she herself has been harmed. She moves from person to person saying and doing what they want for her own end result and no matter how many times she is shown consequences to her actions she doesn't care and proceeds to do them again. When someone is dangerous to themselves and others which you cannot debate Rachelclearly was, intentions have no meaning, you are hurting people again, and again and again. When I worked out that it *wouldn't* let me do what I would do in real life, I just decided to dive head-long into the Rachael spell for the remainder of the game. Something like that is fun in the short term but bad in the long term, but since this was a game of finite length, I knew there would be no ultimate consequence, so why fight the plot of the game? I willingly pledged loyalty to her during the Tempest scene, and in all other ways joined club Rachael.
In real life I would have refused to steal the wine, she would have ultimately lost interest in me (when she saw she couldn't control me) and I would have just gone back to my normal life. No game.

i think that rachel amber was a misunderstood character and she wasn't a bad person. she really cared about chloe, and she knew that chloe was in love with her, which is why she never told her about frank. in that regard, i think she probably never told chloe that, because she wanted to be sure first that her relationship with frank would last, so as not to have to hurt her unnecessarily. perhaps rachel was initially trying to understand if her relationship with frank was more than a pastime (also because we can well notice at their second meeting in before the storm, that the two had had love at first sight), but despite the fact that she cared about him their relationship had become toxic, in fact in a letter from rachel to frank, she mentioned the fact that he used drugs and is alleged to have behaved in a violent way, so she understood that it was time to take a break. meanwhile rachel may have approached nathan through the vortex club, because she noticed he needed help (she had a good eye for detail, so chances are she noticed nathan used psychiatric drugs, or otherwise knew nathan was also a drug addicted since he was frank's client), and this could be why it seemed nathan was related to rachel. in helping nathan, rachel may have discovered the father-son relationship that had been created between him and mark jefferson, leading her to investigate it and become more interested in her professor, trying to get more intimate with him, and probably there she realized she had feelings for him. i don't think they had sex, maybe it was just a rumor. instead i believe in this theory because in life is strange mark jefferson hinted that rachel was a nosy, and this could also explain why she died: she knew too much and jefferson killed her, blaming nathan for it.
i disagree that rachel manipulated chloe, on the contrary: she had been watching her long enough to know that she actually had friends (even if chloe denied, she actually had friends at school who would be there for her, but she preferred to withdraw into herself for fear of being abandoned again), and she probably understood that what chloe needed was a reason to live, and she gave it to her. despite this, rachel needed chloe too, because she showed her life from another perspective. moreover, it is clear that rachel didnt have a real mental stability, in fact she used alcohol and drugs to alter her mood, as shown in before the storm. in rachel's room, you can see a poster of Enneagram 4, and the main characteristic of this personality type is feeling misunderstood by others, fear of abandonment and feeling a void in one's life. this explains that although rachel had created a perfect life, in reality she wasnt happy. the fear of abandonment could also have led her to create a person who was not really her, and this could also explain why she hated arcadia bay: it could not be herself. i think that's also why she didn't show empathy for the fire, she hated the city up to this point.

i feel like most of these opinions are very biased. it really depends on your personal perception of the game and actions from each character. however, i agree that some actions rachel takes really lean her to being a shitty character - i.g slipping drugs in vics tea. but i feel that rachel’s goal was to never face these manipulative actions. a lot of these actions are caused by hurt - such as finding out about her dads affair. with her starting the fire, i believe she did not do it on purpose. i feel she kicked the bin dud to complete rage and heart ache (although this does not excuse her actions). throughout the game she mentions how she knows what she did was insane so the statement of her feeling “no remorse” is completely biased. at the end, you can see how rachel really cares about chloe. chloe wanted to go seak out rachel’s mother in the first place so rachel didn’t demand her to put herself at risk, she simply asked.

  • @TatySwan

Well, Rachel isn't a bad person, she just found her ways - she shows everyone what they want. It's strange to call this selfish because the majority of people try to seem the best they can but aren't capable enough and Rachel is a broadly developed person having a lot of sides to show.
She doesn't force Chloe to do anything - ahe uses her determination to serve Rachel. Rachel says from the beginning "I don't care about you, I just wanted someone to be around" and Chloe is ok with it.
The thing is not that Rachel is bad it's that Chloe bwhavea as a doormat and tries to suit every person she calls friend.
I don't understand all this nonsense with "friendship and even love" between them - seriously? Rachel used Chloe for things she didn't want to do herself and Chloe wanted to seem "cool" - that's all.

That's true, but there were two sides to it as well. Rachel knew that Chloe was desperate for friends and she used that to get what she wanted out of Chloe. Chloe usually had her own ideas of how to do things in the game but Rachel peer pressured her into doing the opposite for her anyway. (Snatching Chloe off the train with her, getting Chloe to steal wine for her, getting Chloe to fill in a role in the play for her, allowing Chloe to break into her dad's office to get info so she could find her mom for her, etc)

Well shit!!! This whole time I thought Rachel was a good person until I watched your video and hearing what you were saying, and started to realize and connect the dots, and in the first episode of BTS when Chloe and Rachel were on the train, the part when Rachel says " When you're dad is the district Attorney, I guess lying is something you're used too." now it came together, thank you, so I guess Chloe was right in the main game when her and max were searching Franks RV and Chloe says " I can't believe she was banging Frank, Rachel straight up lied to my face why didn't she say anything? " then Max says " Because she knew how you would react...." and Chloe replies " Then she wasn't that much of a friend huh?! Just another person who shits all over me, why does everybody in my life let me down? My dad gets killed, you bail on me for years, my mother gloms onto step fucker, now Rachel betrays me!" but again thank you for opening my eyes and I totally agree.

I know this video is three years old but I still want to talk about this topic xD
I don´t think she is necessarily a bad person. And I don´t think she is a good person as well. She is a character with strengths and weaknesses and I think that is what makes her so charming. She makes mistakes, she is not that kind of person everyone sees her as aka the perfect girl. But she is not evil on purpose as well.
During BtS and the first game, 3 years pass by. If we count the Chloe and Rachel romantic timeline as canon then I think everything makes the most sense. When she met Chloe she instantly felt attracted by her. Pretty likely even on a romantic base. However after she spends multiple months or even a few years with her (we don´t know when she started her relationship with frank) she slowly realizes that Chloe may be more than a friend to her but that she does not love her enough to be with her till forever. She still is her best friend but she just does not love her enough.
I could see Chloe being very intrusive and as we know Rachel (the freedom loving beast) she may felt constricted by her. And that´s why she never opened up and started lieing because she knew if she told Chloe about her feelings their friendship would probably be over and Rachel still loved her and needed her.
I think she started to hang out with Frank to get drugs more easily but she started to develop real feelings for him. Out of all her 3 "relationship" I think she was into Frank the most.
Jefferson was just an easy way for her to get famous. If she slept with him I´m pretty sure it´s because he could have helped her career. She never had real feelings for her. Sadly wanting to be famous came with a high price...
All in all I don´t think she is evil. She was a teenager who got caught into a net of lieing (and drugs) without wanting to. She had her own demons, exactly as Chloe did, but she was not as strong as Chloe. And when everything came together it was too late to tell the truth.

I know this is out of place, but last night I had a dream of an alternate wacky ending of the first LiS game which happened in episode 2 I believe. So basically Chloe, Max and I think Ryan from true colours i think was chilling on a very high up flat archway, just talking about life and things, then while Chloe’s talking, she has another one of those moments where the games trying to kill her, and ends sliding right of the archway because of one little misstep. Max tries to grab her but ends up falling right off, but Chloe catches her. This is where three choices can be made, 1. Let Ryan try pulling you both up 2. Try getting Chloe to throw Max into a nearby bush that should break her fall 3. Or try getting Max to use her time powers in some way to help. If you pick option 3, something very bizarre happens: Captain Spirit assembles a big rock monster and heads out to try and save them going at rapid speeds. Once he gets there, he launches the two back up onto the flat roof of the archway, both of them terrified but also completely confused as to what happened. It makes no sense at all, but hey, I had a dream about LiS, so I’m happy either way.

I know I'm late, played this game as soon as the 3rd episode came out but just found this video. I think that before the storm was a huge mess up. When you think about it chloe talks about how Rachel made her feel loved, she was all she had. But square enix could have started their friendship earlier, say right when max left or very soon after. It's hard to belive that they were best friends after 1 day of barely knowing each other!! Like WTF I also dont know anyone( I know it's a game but still) who kisses after barely knowing each other. I cant belive the lost potential with this game I could go on and on I mean rachel is a dickhead, she cant accept the fact that life slaps you in the face. She really is trying to be little miss perfect. Even if you love rachel consider that she could be an impatient little bitch who cant accept reality. I will say the end with the dark room is sad because we learn about rachel and it is an emotional rollercoaster. This game doesn't need to be here since we know rachel will die NOTHING stops that

I think that a part of Rachel's Powers is about spying or something related to it, as she mentions on chapter 1 she was there when Chloe confronted people like Drew, The man from Firewalk concert and others but Chloe and the player didnt see her in any of these moments.
Also, we can see that Illuminati symbol or the eye that sees everything is something that we see very frequently in game and even Rachel talks about it in some point.
But then why didnt she saved herself from Nathan or Jefferson?
As we can see in LiS 1 our Powers don't work when we are on drugs or when we are suffering (Kate's suicide attempt, Jefferson kidnaping Max)
So, when Rachel was killed she couldnt prevent it. Then, as a last wish she makes Max meet Chloe again bc Rachel knowed that Max was very important in Chloe's life and missed her.
Also destroyed everything on Arcadia bay as a revenge, (if we choose to save Chloe)

I recently just finished the first two games BTS and LIS. Still reeling from the crazy shit of how those stories concluded.
This game made my old ass feel the teen angst again. That feeling of stumbling into consequences and situations with that sense of invincibility. That innocence you lose around High School to Collage time.
Many of the points you listed I share 100%. I was flat out shocked when literately drugged a girl, watched her fall and nobody ran to her aide like it didn't just happen.
This game does an insane job playing on your Morals and constantly testing them.
When I see Rachel, I see Rage. Similar to the X-men Phoenix Force movie portrayals. I know FEW woman who would pick up a fucking 2 by 4 and charge a grown man wielding a big ass knife.
That was another moment in the game where I was like...WTF. Where the hell is her head at?! That behavior however does coincide with Earth Signs as she mentioned in the game too.
This is why I feel this game is loosely but very figuratively hints on spiritualism, essences and heavily in interpretation of some ones soul.
So rather than the game being 100% practical and make sense, it does it just enough for the player to believe it and make sense but lives true to the nature of that character.
I surmised quickly by the 3rd episode, Chloe is destined to die. This game does an insanely good job at making you feel Max and Chloe were meant to be, whether friends, lovers, they have one of the strongest and influential friendships I have ever seen in a video game/ story convey to the point of envy. Who wouldn't want to have that one special friend that no matter what, you are connected. Many of us realistically may not have someone like that in real life.
Chloe is another fierce, rage character who seemed to morph from a gentle soul whereas Max is like a shield, a protector. She's the ultimate care bare do gooder. Her spirit is destined to save and care for others which is why she melds so good with Chloe.
This game from instant start up, always felt dream like and ominous especially when time jumping.
I guess what I am saying is Rachel is most likely if not in all reality's will be this Fierly Woman and we're just tagging along.

i think that rachel definitely was toxic, but i still think she cared for chloe. her letters to chloe and the amount of time she spent with chloe showed that she had to have cared at least a little. on the contrary, i also think that rachel was indeed selfish. it was mostly due to the fact that she thought that everyone had her best intentions and wasn’t much of an empath. once she saw that even her own family did not have her best intentions, when she learned about the affair, her built up anger from this deep rooted fear (that she isn’t liked by everyone) exploded, resulting in the forest fire. i think that is when she changed as a person and became more selfish, using chloe as an “inspiration” to continue exerting her anger/inserting herself into situations she shouldn’t be in. i believe rachel thought she was doing the right thing by doing what she thought was “giving zero f**ks”, but in actuality she was becoming more selfish and even less of an empath. connecting to this is the fact that she hid secrets from people she cared about (i.e. chloe, frank) and shared secrets with people she didn’t care about (i.e.jefferson) to please everyone. the only exception from this seemed to be nathan whose relationship with her isn’t explored much throughout the series. she thought that hiding secrets from people would keep their opinion of her high, which was true, but only temporarily. she tried coming clean, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it because she feared judgement.
all in all, i believe that rachel’s selfishness and minuscule amount of empathy towards others made her a toxic friend, but her ability to push those she was close with into doing things they never thought they could do and her ability to make them happy made her a good friend, even though these things were only temporary. her underlying selfish motives, though, caused her to put those she cared about in risky situations and caused her to sacrifice herself and others for a better future for herself (i.e. working with jefferson in the dark room). she was willing to do anything to be liked by everyone which induced such an extreme amount of stress within her leading to bursts of anger which negatively affected chloe, even though the latter didn’t know it.

When I first heard of Rachel I felt sorry for her that she was robbed of living a happy life with Chloe who completely adored and worshipped the ground that Rachel walked on until I found out about the Frank affair and I agreed with Chloe that Rachel has lied straight to her face without giving a damn even if she didn't' tell Chloe is because she simply didn't value Chloe that much to tell her yes she cared but as much as she cared that Frank who could hook her up with drugs? Or that Jefferson could give her the life of being model? I think not.
Did I like that Rachel saved Chloe at the start yeah but then things just seemed to get worse and worse from there as do I think Rachel actually had feelings for Chloe maybe? But she also had feelings for Frank, Jefferson and I don't think she did for Nathan but could be wrong about that. As she's lied to Chloe's face repeatedly even if they weren't a couple then Rachel could of told Chloe as like a heads up instead of writing a letter then throwing it away because she felt bad. A letter to escape telling the truth and admitting that she was in the wrong then what Nathan said in the diner which could of been him just jealous of Rachel and Frank having something which he clearly wanted with her but didn't so just made It up or he's telling the truth that Rachel only used Frank to get what she wants and that she never loved Frank she just acted like she did. And we all know how good of an actor Rachel is plus even Chloe said that Rachel would do anything even if it meant being the dark room on purpose which just confused me so much like if Rachel did willingly go into the dark room and experienced all that surely she would of saw the files of the other girls? Maybe she didn't care because she was promised of being an model by Jefferson?

Obviously she’s very complicated, and a lot of people have different interpretations of her. Personally, I think she really did care about Chloe, maybe even did properly love her; but the fact that *everyone*, no matter who, thought she was perfect in LiS1 makes me think she also instinctively morphs into the person they want to see. No one makes everyone happy by being themselves. So even though she genuinely had this connection with Chloe, that impulse to transform and please everyone she meets remained-hence everything we discover with Frank, Jefferson, etc. Even before the prequel you can see some of this, because no one is all things to all people-even to someone as monstrous as Mr Jefferson-and yet she was.
And I think Chloe probably dismissed a lot of red flags (like drugging Victoria to get her part back or causing a massive forest fire) because she *needed* that relationship to be a good one. She had no other relationship at the time that made her feel accepted or loved, so because Rachel made her feel that way I think she dismissed any of Rachel’s actions that would have challenged that feeling. Even before BTS came out, the way Chloe referred to Rachel as her “angel” implies a certain amount of that reluctance to see her flaws.
    That’s my take.
