    when I was a little kid, I remember going to that place and loving it. there was a Payless, a justice, a subway, a tiny train kids could ride on all around the mall, etc. I go there still about every weekend and everything seems so empty. kind of like the end of an era situation. usually me and my friends go there just to look around but every time I go, it seems like something is missing. it’s like that innocence the mall had is now gone and the mall is slowly dying.

    River Valley Mall opened when I was in high school, and it was EVERYTHING to a teenager in the '80's. You couldn't go without seeing someone you knew... and there was so much to do! I saw so many movies there and pumped countless quarters into the arcade, which was one of the best arcades anywhere south of Columbus.... good times, sad its dying along with the rest of the malls.

    I worked for Fun 4 U from 2003 to 2006. The store I managed was in Heath but I made it down to Lancaster every now and then to work at that store. I’ll never forget the first day the Heath store made less than $100 in a day happened under my watch. Malls and arcade businesses were even declining back then and we had a Sears open next to us at that time. Foot traffic is such a big thing. The store in Lancaster had an anchor beside it but I can’t remember if it was a Sears as well or something different. When those anchors go, it hurts. Food court is definitely bare. I remember a Wendy’s and Coldstone Creamery that don’t appear to be there now.

    I live in Lancaster now. Every time we see a new vendor pop up here, it is gone a few months later. The parking lot and roads surrounding the mall are full of crater sized potholes. I wish the city would do something to help this place rebound but I doubt they have the $ or resources to do it.

    It's so sad. I remember this place booming and the place to go on weekends and Holiday Shopping . It still looks nice. Such a shame the malls are dead.

    I remember when this area as one big corn field. Now if the mall is dismantled, will they return it to being a cornfield again?

    I live in Zanesville and was just there last weekend. I remember going there with my buddies on the weekends because lancaster had a better mall than we did (or so i thought anyways) it is sad that these malls used to be the place to go to when we were young and now they're all dying

      Yep, this was the place to be in the 90s and 00s. Saw a ton of movies at that Regal Cinema and eventually bought an engagement ring at the Dunkin’s Diamonds that used to be in there.

    It looks better than most old malls inside. Lancaster it still a nice town unlike where most old malls are in ghettos now.

    Did they for sure demolish something? I was a little confused here.

      Yes, they demolished the former Hill/Ames/Steve & Barry's space for Cinemark.

    My curiosity is up. "Rick & co-pilot Frank Gerwer" had at least two shows that first appeared on Vice and are now on UA-cam. One show examined the death of Route 66, and another dealt with abandoned malls.
    Is that what you are doing? Are you traveling around to document places that are slowly dying or are already gone? If so, I look forward to more shows?
    Also, are you from this area of Ohio or somewhere else? I can see advantages to both when it comes to reporting.

    • @JeremysRetailExploration

      Yes, that's what I'm doing. I live in Pennsylvania.

      @@JeremysRetailExploration Thanks for the information. You're doing a great job, and I look forward to viewing your other entries.
      By the way, I view the Midwest malls as a metaphor for the decline of most of the Midwest. Yes, the region is still here, but it is nothing similar to what it was before what I call The Great Death of Manufacturing in the 70s and 80s.

    • @BurtinLancaster
      @BurtinLancaster 8 місяців тому

      Two final items:
      1. The question mark in "If so, I look forward to more shows?" was a typo. It should have been a period.
      2. I posted another item this morning about a nonfiction book entitled "Glass House." Now, it is not here. Did you see it at any time today?

    • @JeremysRetailExploration
      @JeremysRetailExploration  8 місяців тому

      @@BurtinLancaster I did not see it

    • @BurtinLancaster
      @BurtinLancaster 8 місяців тому

      @@JeremysRetailExplorationThanks. That's odd. Perhaps its disappearance was due to my providing a url for the book.
      A book about Lancaster, Ohio, that I can recommend is "Glass House: The 1% Economy and the Shattering of the All-American Town." However, I think that the book applies to most - if not all - small factory towns in the Midwest.
