- Morningside Historic District is a national historic district located at Gary, Indiana. The district is characterized by spacious lots and tree-shaded curving streets. It encompasses 99 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site. Morningside developed early in the 20th century as a secluded area for middle- and upper-class residents. Construction in the neighborhood spanned nearly 40 years - from 1917 to 1953 - creating an architectural collection ranging from English cottages and Tudor Revival style manors to post-war ranch houses. The area was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the Partners in Preservation program. Funded by local preservation advocate Jim Morrow, the program pays for professional preparation of National Register nominations for qualifying structures in Lake and Porter counties.
It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009

I agree with you, David it was very refreshing to take a ride around because I know a couple years ago. There was at least six abandoned, beautiful homes, and now they have been remodeled and people are living in them. Big shout out to you David. Yeah I also was wondering how this neighborhood was looking lately because I meant to do videos on it before, but never got around to it. However, when we were Lew Wallace I could not help but to see it was looking a little bit rough. However, now it seems like every single house has lived in and that’s a great thing to see.

Thank you for doing this video!! ❤ We lived across the street from Morningside, on 47th Avenue. Morningside was considered the rich people neighborhood. Even as a kid, I rode my bike through those three blocks a thousand times. I loved the houses. One of my brother's best friends lived in Morningside, Jerry Goldstone. His dad was a doctor. Sadly, the whole family were killed in a private plane crash piloted by the dad. I think that was the early to mid 70s.

Do you know if that was the plane that hit that house right next to Lew Wallace high school? My mom was telling us about that and my brother was doing research trying to find out what the exact story was. I’m not sure if he ever did a video on it or not. Thank you, Storm. I think the plane crash was out west; maybe Colorado. I just remember my parents talking that they found the plane in a forest. Do you remember the year of the crash by Wallace? I don't remember that crash at all.@@TheSteelCityStorm

I walked through that neighborhood every school day from 66-70 going to Lew Wallace.
Diversity of home construction is so nice to see and kept up aswell
But the true irony is literally 5 blocks in any direction is hell on earth
Thank you sooo much for the tour of my fave neighborhood growing up. We lived at 48th and Madison and my friends and I would always ride our bikes along the gorgeous shaded streets of Morningside. That neighborhood was the envy of so many of us wishing we could live there. I did know three families who lived there and the homes were just as grand inside as out. One even had separate servants quarters. It looks so different now with so many trees gone. And it definitely looks better than it did about 5-10 years ago when several of the homes were deserted and boarded up. It’s so nice to see this wonderful neighborhood has been reclaimed. Maybe now start to replant the trees also?
What a wonderful drive and a beautiful day this was for it too. the neighborhood is so well maintained, and the homes are just remarkable. You can see the pride in the people living there just by the way it looks. Where your school was looks like a park now. I'm sorry that you had to see it go, it must have been hard for you. I went to two high schools and the first one is also gone now. It makes me sad that I will never be able to drive by it and wave like I sometimes used to do, but the memories it left will never leave me, nor you. As long as something great takes its place all is not lost. New memories will be made in the very same spot that you made all of the old ones, and the new ones will then sit alongside the old ones that are forever in your heart.
I used to go to Cub Scout meeting in that neighborhood in the early 70s. A lot of Doctors and Lawyers lived in the neighborhood, where we would meet the kids dad delivered babies for a living
Went to Wallace from 70-74, walked through that neighborhood at lunchtime 100's of times going to Burger King, Coney King, Bronko's Pizza....nice that it's looking good again.
Like always great video and also showing that Gary just isn't a all bad! Have you also thought about doing like any old open church's like the cathedral ? And graves of famous people.

Im really bother to see how quick they tore down Lew Wallace. Im hopeful the city has a plan for the property but i would love to see something like a YMCA or community center there. Gary has so much potential especially that area of Glen Park. Im curious to know what you and your team think should go there next?

I am just now seeing your message and I apologize. I really enjoyed reading this. You put a smile on my face class of 84 for me. We documented Lew Wallace the whole demolition process and it was hard to watch it. I truly believe they should’ve demolished Horace Mann before Wallace. I think the best thing to put there would be a trucking company to bring revenue to the neighborhood. It is amazing how big it looks with the school demolished. It would be a great spot to put some kind of distribution center for a trucking company in my opinion. I would like to thank you so much for putting a smile on my face by reading your message and I apologize it took me so long to see it. Big shot out to you. The red house at 07:40 is where Rebecca King lived with her family. Her mom and my mom were friends. I spent a lot of time with Becky's brother Sam in that house. As most of us from Gary know, she went on to marry Terry Crews. Lots of good memories from Morningside. I am very pleased to see that the neighborhood has bounced back because the last time I drove through there there were abandoned houses on just about every block.

I don’t think it’s so much rich people but well to do people the neighborhood is pretty average now except for some of those beautiful homes
Thanks Storm for the tour. My Grandmother lived around 35th and Connecticut and we rarely crossed Broadway. Some classic architecture for sure. The lot sizes are huge on some of those homes. I’ll have to take a tour of that neighborhood the next time I visit the “GI”.

Back in the day it was a very beautiful neighborhood. Only well to do people could afford to live there.

Thank you for the tour of Gary without “Ruin Porn” these people are proud of their city and they keep their property in a way that reflects their pride.
While it's sad the high school has now passed on your drive-thru was actually uplifting and inspiring. Places not boarded up or burned out plus quite a variety of Home Designs many with spacious yards. One thing the City of Gary should invest in is a Forestry Department. While not in this neighborhood the city is also blemished buy many dead trees and overgrown bushes and many of the ones even in a nice area aren't pruned on a regular basis. On the same note these homes are deservant of trees at the front of their property by the sidewalk or near the curb. I am glad to see there are some examples here but more consistency is needed. These homes in Milwaukee with their size lot would go for $250K add in the suburbs could easily go for up to $500,000. Bless this neighborhood as this is the area where their tax base is
The old mansions.
I remember going to Law’s between 80 and 84 and always wanted to live back there. Definitely some beautiful homes back there in that old neighborhood. It’s nice to see that. They did not let it go.
