The song that is playing in the intro is "It's not easy". Not sure if that is the official title, but that's what it is under here on youtube...

Watching this long after it was recorded and I am amazed to see how good Joe was even back then. I love this young man because he is playing music most guys his age wouldn't even listen to. He plays at a very mature level with taste, tone and feel. And he will help keep fingerstyle guitar alive and well for years to come!

I got a lesson from a guitar teacher in my area and he told me to put on a movie, and just play things while watching the movie, scales, songs, etc. eventually he said it'll become second nature to know where everything is without looking. He told me all this while looking at me, but also playing something quite technical. After trying it for a while it definitely works, but it takes a lot of pratice

Thank you so much. I'm going to try to get better at it but I play fingerstyle and alternate to flatpick the runs so it gets pretty crazy and technical at the same time.I use powertab to write and it works out pretty good. Jose Feliciano used to slay me because he was blind but I never see him miss a note. Doc Watson amazes me too.

Finger dexterity, coordination and rhythm is a gift, no amount of practice will make this happen

Just found out about him today. I went right to Spotify and listened to his "Let Me Introduce You" album. Great stuff. I first heard the song "Lethal Injection", and thought he was a fusion guy. I love that, but the album has so much more. He's a great singer and songwriter too. I need to get home to practice.

Not exactly a "lesson" (shame on him... all the lies... LIES!), but this guy is so damn good, he can be forgiven for having deceived me into watching him show off! What a fantastic guitarist! He seems quite young, it's interesting (and great) to see a person of his age being into jazz guitar instead of metal riffs or pop tunes.

@crisDAwog - He likely makes up his own sets with individual strings - or swaps out the high string E in a prepackaged set for durability/tone. Its a personal preference. I used to buy plain individually wrapped strings; plain and wounds by GHS and made up my own sets back before they marketed as light top, heavy bottom.

I can't believe how guys like Joe here & Tommy Emmanuel are able to play the guitar with such ease. They were born with super dexterity & a natural understanding of the guitar & music that the every day person like me does not have. They can't read music & don't know anything about music theory and don't need to because they were born with a gift. Lucky bastards they are because they also get rich doing it. I hate my life !

@jKazej and @Anhorn32 Im pretty sure Joe started playing guitar at ten after switching from piano. Clearly he didnt start touring right out of the gate, but I remember reading or hearing somewhere that after 1 or 2 years of playing he was performing with Phil Emmanuel. I dont think he meant touring in a big organized kind of way but playing diff areas and occasionally a guest role. Or maybe he misspoke, either way not a big deal. He sure as hell is touring now though!

I think he plays beautifully and there would be a good market for acoustic jazz in this style Electric players are a dime a dozen. Also, rockabilly is making a bit of a comeback (e.g. Imelda May) and this fast fingerpicking style could blend in with neo-rocakbilly as well. I wish him much success!

That's great that he's getting into jazz, and he seems to have a talent for it. The audience for jazz is small but intense and there's a lot of grant money floating around. He should attend a music school focused on jazz and then he can combine teaching and gigging.

"Talent for anything is God-Given"....thats a pretty bold statement to make. So what your saying is, when god is putting your soul together in his little soul factory, right after he finishes your emotions and psychological disorders he puts together a little batch of "talent" hidden deep in the depths of your personality and its your job to find that talent and work everyday at it. Please let me know if I'm wrong cause you seem to know the answers to all of life's most puzzling questions.

  • @Rickw1983

Practice is certainly very important but inherent skill is what separates people like Joe & Tommy from the rest of us. Anyone could practice 8 to 12 hours a day every day for years & years but we would not come close to their level of playing. Joe has only been playing for about 10 years & his level of playing is lightyears beyond what 99% of people are capable of. If practice were the primary factor then many many more people would be able to play like Joe & Tommy but only a very few can.
