who should win best picture?
Imo the power of the dog
CODA or Power of the Dog
Drive My Car
Dune, Licorice Pizza, or West Side Story
Imma watch the 3 i haven't seen tonight Drive My Car, Belfast and Coda. But as of right now. West Side Story or The Power of the dog. but Red Rocket is the real winner in my heart
“Sourdough is the ‘I shot on film’ of bread” is such a perfect analogy.
agreed (also hi)
@@livmendel sup
Karsten really out here revolutionizing film criticism
Literally stole the concept from Doug Doug but okay
With cringe
@bigdog grow up
i heard you saying earlier that this series hasnt been doing well and isnt getting the recognition it deserves but since im here early i just want to say that this is one of the most creative series on youtube and i always get excited seeing a new video in my sub box. keep up the good shit karsten
Truly the robots of UA-cam videos
How can you say your own series isn't getting the recognition it deserves.
I disagree. I loose interest when he goes into detail about the food.
@@willsingleton yeah, it doesnt work at all. nobody came to this channel for a list of ingredients, we want to hear his opinion on film.
@@sciencecharity that’s exactly what he’s doing though
NOT ANSEL ELGORT AS THE BAY LEAF LMAOO that took me out
“Dune is a heavy beast of a movie, so I made nachos." Karsten, had me convinced he was making lasagna haha.
my favorite thing about your videos is how you end them with “form your own opinion” i feel like the more i’ve gotten into film, the more i inadvertently look to video essays and critiques to form my opinions on denser projects. i think this is a problem with indulging in art in general but it’s something people just can’t help sometimes especially when they’re trying to be apart of some “critical” film culture or whatever. that’s why i appreciate so much how you remind everyone at the end that this is YOUR take. you clearly know what you’re talking about and have an incredibly interesting opinion but at the end of the day it is just an opinion and that’s why everyone should form their own unique one. it seems small and obvious but it’s great you repeatedly end your critiques with that and it’s something we tend to forget sometimes when we look toward critiques and associate them with being “right.”
“Is this what should win best meal? Oh my god no.”
Karsten’s psychic, just backwards.
Man, I think this video was one of the most creative and refreshing pieces of work about this year's Oscar season.
I love how Karsten is able to translate his imperfections in his cooking to the imperfections in the film
Not calling this Oscar NOMS was a missed opportunity
This is literally my favorite series ever, I would watch an entire channel just dedicated to these kind of videos
“Dune is a heavy beast of a movie, so I made nachos.”
Delicious, witty and so, so shady! And I'm all for it!
West Side Story was always gonna need a remake. This is a story about conflict between heritages, how can we be satisfied with most of the Hispanics being played by actors in brownface?
thank god someone else was thinking that
It also deserves best cinematography. Spielberg movies usually do
@@donovanwiebe2495 nah, dune had already secured best cinematography
@@yolo12345lol Dune looks really good, but West Side Story looks so good that I obsess over a different shot/sequence from it every other day. If it doesn't win cinematography I'm gonna rage
As a latino I was pretty mad at his comments for this reason
The shade towards Sam Elliott was hilarious, I can only imagine how baffling that analogy seemed to those who didn't know what you meant
What did he mean? I didn't get it. I thought he was quite good in the movie.
@@rafaelc.c. I was referring to the joke Karsen made towards the end of the video about "people who identify as burgers being offended" or whatever. It was in reference to Sam Elliott while on a podcast saying how much he hated Power of the Dog because it's not a real western or whatever.
@@felixcrookston2237 Oh, ok, I don't know how I confused him with Ansel Ergot. I mean Karsen has said something about him I didn't get too. But actually I did get that joke about Sam Elliot, haha. I was like if I am got it, that was sensational, but if not I don't even know what he's talking about. I listened to the interview in which he criticized the movie and Jane Campion.
Thanks man.
West Side Story needed to be remade. The original was definitely a product of the times. Racism infected every aspect of the 1961 film, down to its production. I think it was kinda cool that the story was able to be presented without the same barriers the original had. It shows how far we come as a society, even though we have a long way to go.
Besides, the rice dish didn’t look too bad.
I love how you don't explain every metaphor leaving for the audience to think for themselves
I love when my teachers don't teach me anything and let the students think for themselves.
Came back to this video to see Karsten literally eat his words about CODA.
I'd just recommend doing the Knife Out series in bundles, like this or a franchise ranking or a director ranking. It makes the commentary much more interesting while also padding out the runtime and including a variety in case some people don't want to stick with one thing for too long, while also providing the usual intrigue and tension of watching a ranking video wondering which one is going to be next and trying to remember which ones are left
Just revisiting this video and, man, I adored this series. It's a shame it wasn't more popular, because this is such a fresh, clever, entertaining and funny approach to film criticism. I hope we get some more in the future.
Belfast is in northern Ireland, we don't eat much potatoes here
My man actually ate licorice on a piece of pizza
As a serious foodie and serious film lover, your analogies are brilliant. Subbed.
I disagree about the stance on Belfast, as someone who grew up in Ireland (the north specifically) and who’s family and peers were impacted by the troubles, I feel like the film captures life here perfectly (even now), although I feel like that is specific to an Irish person, it’s more than the eye candy cinematography, it truly captures the Irish attitude to anything like that, nonchalance, secretiveness, but regardless a focus on family. The characters are caricatures of people at home and for that reason it hits hard, especially the focus on family more than anything a very Irish thing
The Sam Elliot shade LMAO
Food based metaphors?
It's like poetry. It rhymes.
licorice pizza for the win
I'm really glad to hear your take on Licorice Pizza, because I felt very similar. I enjoyed the scenes in their own right, but by the end of the movie, they ended up going nowhere for some cliche ending
This series is so awesome lmao, the creativity and effort put into it is outstanding.
Well the strawberry milkshake is the best meal i guess 🤷🏼♂️
I’m glad someone else felt super meh about Licorice Pizza, one striking thing to me was the age difference of the characters it just offset me a bunch, how they go from friends it’s fine but to eventually dating it’s just predatory
obviously it would be problematic if it happened in real life but at the end of the day its a movie. its not real. movies dont have to always be 100% realistic and you can get lost in them and the world they create. but i respect your opinion bro
I really can’t comprehend this take. If it was just a side plot, a little “oh haha that’s so weird that there’s a predatory relationship in the background” that indeed would be bad. But that relationship IS THE WHOLE PLOT. The movie is about the morality of the situation, and the power dynamics. It’s such a small way to look at media to see a problematic concept and immediately think it’s bad. I mean, there’s so much murder in media but I’m sure you’re not offsetted my that.
If you think they were dating you didn't get the movie lol
@@OliverShearer you see thats true but when you watch a movie built on authenticity and even trying to go out of its way and including unneeded racism just for "authenticity" i think it definitely is supposed to be problematic. the thing is, thats the point. phantom thread is problematic, just not to the extent of this. licorice pizzas whole age gap thing is the point. it brings problems for those characters and for the viewers because they are forced to watch this relationship become closer despite knowing its wrong. its just this morally grey area and i assume that they do that to show that yeah they definitely wont fit together but they try anyway cuz they are young and dumb and want to be happy.
@@1mancult I'm sorry but 26 isn't "young and dumb" age anymore. It makes sense for a 15 year old to want to be with the 26 year old cause he dosen't know any better, but for a 26 year old to want to be with a 15 year old? I just can't see any beuty in that I dunno
god finally someone who gets me on licorice pizza! I feel crazy trying to explain to people that yes, I did in fact like the majority of the movie a lot, but I feel like the last fifteen minutes were sloppy and completely threw out the moral ambiguity it was teetering with so well for the sake of having a "neat" conclusion. Definitely a good foundation with a nasty aftertaste like you said
shoulda made a knuckle sandwich for King Richard LOL
I definitely keep coming back for those nachos, I've watched Dune like 4-5 times and I'm a huge fan of the book.
Me too for me it was definitely the most exciting movie and most people I have talked with about movies last and beginning of this year everyone auswäscht had lots to say and was really interested in the movie and can’t wait for the part 2
This series is so creative and fun! Please keep it up, I look forward to these videos every month!
This is one of the most interesting and creative series on UA-cam. Please keep making them!
When’s dirtbag yo?
you've been bamboozled
it somehow makes perfect sense that karsten owns a kitchen aid blender but not a potato peeler
For Belfast I made a quesadilla
For Don’t Look Up I made a quesadilla
For King Richard I made a quesadilla
For Coda I made a quesadilla
For Licorice Pizza I made a quesadilla
For Nightmare Alley I made a quesadilla
For West Side Story… I didn’t see it
For Drive My Car I made a quesadilla
For Dune I made a quesadilla
For The Power of The Dog I made a quesadilla
You gotta do more of these film food reviews. Cause it really communicates your thoughts, and the food really hammers it home, and provides a good reference point
I LOVE THIS SERIES KARSTEN makes me hungry
This is the future of movie reviews
“Velveeta is the Will Smith of Cheese”
Velveeta slaps, dude.
The Burger Elliot reference made me chuckle.
I know this series is basically dead at this point, but I am begging 🙏 that he at LEAST makes one of these every year for Oscar season.
These videos are always so well thought out and insightful. I love it!
This is just the most interesting and unique way to review movies I’ve seen in a long time! Absolutely adore this series!!!
I'm literally in love with this series! Cooking and movies are both huge parts of my life and every time I watch one of these I get so inspired
keep making these please !! loved the analysis
Great episode for a great series
this series is so fun and deserves wy more recognition, i am loving this.
I’m loving this series Karsten. Keep it up!
All the analogies and dishes were on point! I can tell you really worked really hard. I hope this gets more appreciation!
You really outdid yourself with video! The Pizza metaphor was perfect.
Just one question.
How did you eat all that food after this video?
He probably records it for dinner every night for a week lol
This is absolutely amazing!!!
LOVE this series, so creative and fun!!
I love how you can perfectly define a movie by literally cooking. This is the best review series I’ve ever watched. Can’t wait to finish this video.
Edit: Just finished the video. I think your interpretation of Drive My Car is my favorite. I also like the Dune Nachos makes perfect sense for the movie.
You commented this the second the video came out....
Love ur creativity with this film analysis mate!
I finally had my exact thoughts about Licorice Pizza verbalized, THANK YOU EWwWwW
This is one of the best videos i’ve seen in a while. I only saw Dune out of the whole list but the way you described esch movie with the dish is so cool! Love your channel and keep up the good work!
I absolutely love this video series
amazing analysis wow
I hope you do this each year!
All the comparisons and metaphors are on point.
these videos are so creative, i absolutely love these videos karsten!
A critique that I see a lot about West Side Story is the "why did we need a remake?" Which is an interesting take because that's exactly how theatre has always been done. There are remakes and revivals all the time especially of shows that were first produced decades ago. WSS itself has already been revived at least 3 times on Broadway. So to remake something, especially a musical, did not seem weird at all to me. In fact, it lends itself to being differently interpreted by different directors with their own spin on it which is exactly what Spielberg did, and expertly might I add. Or to put in into to food terms, it's exactly like two different people making the same recipe decades a part. While one is the original the one being made now has a different taste and perspective about the dish that the original might not have!
Next you need to make a meal for every razzie nominee
Love the uniqueness of the video
this was amazing
Loveee this series
I loved this type of review😂😂😂
I actually love the knife out videos and I wish they came out more often. Thanks for the great videos karsten!
Love this series, so sick !
I am amazed at how well these analogies work
this was super creative and really fun to watch! also laughed out loud during the west side story part.
This is such a fun video, I really enjoyed it
good shit karsten!!
great video man
This might me the greatest UA-cam video I've ever watched, thanks!
this is such a great series, probably the most unique take ive seen on the admittedly kind of bloated subgenre of film criticism on youtube. really great stuff FR , i hope karsten continues it as long as its fun/fulfilling for him :)
i respect the dedication
Fire video. Love cooking and love movies, gotta love the combo
My favorite series!
I still continue to love this concept of using the food you make specifically for the movie you are criticizing on. Always different because every movie on this list, had something different to it. Love you work sir!
this is insane. i love it
This really is the best thing ever - amazing video
I love this series, I've just discovered that I really enjoy cooking, and I love films, so fits together perfectly lol
i am obsessed with how normal this food looks
this video is so absurdly good. 10/10 would vote this video for best picture
this is good man
This is defined my favorite series on youtube.
This video is so cute, Karsten, well done!
although the intro shot was threatening, i love these videos! keep ‘em coming
karsten you really r the perfect man
That grilled cheese looks like it slapped.
great video!! im so curious about how many of these analogies are pre planned and how many just happen while he's cooking 😂
I’m always shocked when I come up on a video like this where I agree with all the takes either partially or completely. I’ve seen all of these films, and these takes feel measured and well thought out.
this is the best video- i think ever
licorice pizza analogy was perfect, unsatisfying weird ass ending
