    In South Africa we have literally one cinema playing Everything Everywhere All at Once while Doctor Strange is showing at literally every cinema available with multiple screenings. Filmmakers aren’t upset at Marvel movies, they are upset at how Disney distributes Marvel movies. Smaller films like Everything Everywhere All at Once don’t even get shown at cinemas because every cinema room is only showing Marvel’s latest. It makes more money but at what cost.

      Theaters are business. They have to pay bills. They won’t show a film they don’t think people will want to watch

    It’s very depressing to see. People often think that there’s “no original movies” anymore, which they’re wrong about. Because there are, but the more this BS continues, there soon aren’t gonna be any because nobody is watching them and you can blame that partly on the pandemic ruining people’s perception of what belongs in a theater but a huge part of it is just all this awful monopolization going on

      The worst part is that major companies like Disney are reducing the variety of films in display. I mean, would producers today even consider investing in movies like Lethal Weapon or even light family comedies like Cheaper by the Dozen? No, cause they are no safe bets. Of course there's streaming as a resource but it's just not the same.

    • @HeavyTopspin
      @HeavyTopspin 2 роки тому +26

      Changes in how we get our entertainment has also impacted this. In the last month, almost everything I've watched aside from playoff hockey has been through various streaming services, commercial-free. I'm more likely to see a UA-cam channel discussing a new movie than I am to see an ad for one. Whereas 10 years ago I'd know every movie coming out in the next month simply from commercials, I literally had never heard of "Ambulance" before this video. Hundreds of UA-cam channels are discussing every new Marvel movie ad nauseum, but not a one that I've noticed has told me to go see Ambulance. Add in that more intimate movies - comedies, serious dramas, and arthouse fare - for the most part aren't lessened by seeing them on a small screen, and spoilers are less of a worry for those, and you could concede that most of the moviegoing public are ONLY going to set aside the time, money, and effort to see those big tentpole blockbusters in actual theaters. God knows I'd rather be cuddled up on the couch with my wife to watch a movie than crammed into a small seat munching on $12 popcorn... and even though The Northman and Everything Everywhere All At Once are totally movies I'm interested in seeing, there's over driving urge to see them NOW, especially since there is no water cooler to discuss them around now that I'm working 100% remote post-virus.

      It's kinda ironic really, we have every possible way to look for more movies via Internet search, but the majority of us just wait for major media outlets to tell us what to watch. I've been trying to look into other independents more often (how i found out about All at Once and edge of seventeen) and I hope more people do it to prevent this disney takeover.

      I’ll be honest…this is a dangerous way to think. Marvel movies make money because they’re made well and people like them. People will continue to buy product that is good. That’s the free market for you, capitalism is working as intended. It’s not a monopoly, it’s just what people want to watch. You guys are talking more like socialism with “even-ing stuff out” so other movies can have a chance. That’s wrong. Let the free market do its thing. Disney is winning because they’re making movies that people want to watch. Just like a restaurant that puts other restaurants out of business because they make food that people like more than the other places. Completely fine.

    to me disney acting this way is a way of manufacturing an audience as well. of course their movies are hugely popular, but part of that popularity stems from the fact that they're the only things on. when a theatre has 70 screenings of the same movie, people are going to watch it because what else can they watch.

    I’ve read Martin Scorsese’s piece in The NY Times and his Harper essay and his points about Marvel are even about the film themselves but the culture of cinema it’s creating. But people don’t get that. They refuse to see it as that and they turn it into a high art vs low art argument. When that’s not even the point. The point is that Spider-Man No Way Home was still showing in theatres 5 months after its release date when Everything Everywhere All at Once was starting its run and I had to wait several months before I could see Celine Sciamma’s Petite Maman but I don’t have to look very far to see Marvel content. It’s everywhere and it isn’t creating space for other films.

    I work at a theater, and I see a lot of the behind the scene stuff with how we show movies. When we got Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Northman, we were very excited. A lot of people were coming to both of them too. When Doctor Strange 2 came out, all of us were pretty sad to see those movies leave us. People still come into the theater asking to see movies like The Lost City, and I have to tell them that we are only showing Dr. Strange 2. The problem is, is that even though we want to show these different movies, we can’t. When Cruella was out, after like a month literally no one was seeing it. We took it out of the schedule and Disney got mad at us for doing that. We had to keep it in because Disney still wanted it to be shown in theaters. It’s ridiculous. But then again, Dr. Strange 2 has been bringing in a lot of people… but once it gets irrelevant, Disney will still milk it till it’s dry.

    It's even worse when you look at this same situation outside the US. Here in Brazil, Disney movies (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, live action remakes and all the rest) dominate practically the entire circuit of available theaters, reaching the point where entire theaters show only ONE movie. You Americans are lucky to see an A24 movie in theaters, because here we rarely have that opportunity and, when we do, the screenings are limited to large cities, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Another issue is that this predominance of Disney in theaters takes away space from Brazilian cinema, whose films have to fight to get one or two screenings at most.

    As an MCU fan I personally hate how the success of the franchise has been used to make smaller movies seem less valuable, which in turn has resulted in people to then turn on the franchise as a whole.
    The high amount of screenings Disney is giving Doctor Strange is absurd, because stuff like this isn't pulled for something like Everything Everywhere.
    Yes, plenty of people wanted to watch Doctor Strange, and you could argue that something like The Northman would've flopped even in normal times, but it feels now that the concept of a non-crossover movie is nothing more than streaming content.
    Will we ever break free of the Superhero reign? I can't say for certain. What I can say is, don't complain that all Hollywood makes are superhero movies, and then proceed to only see superhero/franchise films, it gets us nowhere at the end of the day.

I’m not saying you’re horrible or wrong if you just like seeing fun, big budget movies with dumb jokes and vin diesel and formulaic plots, but audience numbers for other films (we’ve tried to show A24 films just for the sake of bringing more diversity to what we show on our screen & bc they’re good movies we want to support) are so abysmal. People just don’t show up.
    It’s pretty sad to see the way the pandemic has changed movie theaters & even our “hits” like Spider-man perform underwhelmingly compared to what they would have pre-pandemic because of the competing streaming options/flashy new updates to multiplexes just trying to compete with streaming. • @matheusvillela9150
      @matheusvillela9150 2 роки тому +16

      I think this would have the opposite effect. Smaller movies don't attract a mass audience to theaters anymore, people don't have the free time or disposable income, and streaming/piracy is easily accessible. More and more, theaters are being dominated by major blockbusters or the niche "auteuristic" movies for the festival crowds. I don't think people will just decide to bet on a smaller movie that's showing in a small number of theaters just because it's a couple of dollars cheaper than the latest Marvel movies. They'll just spend more money at Marvel, since they only go to the movies a handful of times a year anyway. The costs of keeping a movie theater are the same, whether you're showing an indie or a major blockbuster. Might as well just show the movies that will get asses on seats, and with a larger profit margin.

    • @Jk-pk1oz
      @Jk-pk1oz 2 роки тому +4

      @@matheusvillela9150 I suppose that it depends on the reason why people aren’t seeing smaller films. If it’s indeed due to a lack of general interest or time, then yes, a price difference ain’t gonna work. But if people think that smaller movies aren’t worth their ticket price, making them cheaper should theoretically be the right solution, that’s just basic economics. You’re right that the current system probably yields the biggest profit margins for cinema chains, but you also gotta ask yourself: at what cost? I’d argue that there’s more long term social value in consuming indie and arthouse films over the average Marvel film, which is all too often forgotten about, especially in countries like the US. There needs to be a balance of both in the system, skewing one way or the other is a bad thing. Also, streaming and piracy are just as easily available for blockbusters. The big reason why people are more likely to get tricked into seeing big movies in theaters is because of savy marketing, branding and spoiler culture. Those are three aspects that indie and arthouse films can’t really compete with, so maybe they should be provided with a helping hand (i.e. lower prices).

    • @matheusvillela9150
      @matheusvillela9150 2 роки тому +5

      @@Jk-pk1oz The lack of interest is caused by lack of time, money and general conditioning. Blockbusters are an expection because they're spectacle driven and meant for a four quadrant audience. Spoiler culture plays a part in this too, as you mentioned. Like, if the difference in ticket prices was great, like 2-1, more people would be drawn to them, I suppose. But these movies usually struggle to break even at current ticket prices, cutting the prices in half would hit their revenue hard, and thus make their production harder. At the end of the day, the game is rigged. A handful of corporations dominate most of the media landscape, and that is not going to change without larger systemic change.

    • @Jk-pk1oz
      @Jk-pk1oz 2 роки тому +1

      @@matheusvillela9150 Cutting prices doesn’t have to hurt their revenue if more people show up, which depends on the demand curve and its elasticity. Again, it all comes down to if ticket prices are the primary reason keeping people away from smaller films, which we don’t know for sure. And yes, the current game is rigged, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t incentives that could provide some change. Ideally, you’d want the entire population to have a form of cinematic literacy and have the same appreciation for indie and arthouse as they do for the usual spectacle, but that isn’t going to happen soon. However, pointing the audience in the right direction by making quality films more of an attractive deal could potentially work, at least in the short term.

Pointing the finger at the audience won't help. Sure, we can all recommend movies to our friends, or introduce them to different forms of cinema. I tried my best to make everyone I know watch Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, but a lot of my friends just didn’t go. They’re waiting for it to be released on HBO Max or Hulu or whatever.
    To be honest, this discourse about Disney and the MCU is only part of the picture, because I don’t think that if Disney didn’t release any movies that suddenly all of these indie films would see huge dominance in the box office. I think people would largely just stay home, the way they’re doing right now, and wait for movies to come out on streaming. Meanwhile RRR, one of the biggest international movies in the world right now that was made for the big screen, could be found almost nowhere. Everything Everywhere was barely anywhere on release, too. It's only finally getting more screenings when at the start it was sandwiched between so many other releases that there were only two screenings A WEEK.

    Well that’s why Scorsese saying “Marvel isn’t Cinema” is something I completely agree with. It’s basically a momentary high you get before moving on. I tried rewatching a few Marvel movies and the only ones I could were Iron Man, and Thor Ragnarok. Homecoming was pretty cute, but man, that means there’s like 90% that don’t really feel good as stand alone movies. Then they had TV shows BASED on the movies going on and I’m like “dude… all I need is Dare Devil. The other spin offs are great but give me television as good and different as Dare Devil and we’ll be in business.”
    I really hope DC is realizing that “hey… maybe if we make our films closer to art house, then it’ll give it a distinct style that separates it from Marvel!” Joker was the first, now The Batman was amazing and I’m hoping they get Spike Jonze to do a Superman movie… either way, I don’t know man, I just wanna see good films.
    I just discovered “Mirrormask” tonight and have never seen anything like it. It’s a 2005 film directed by the dude who did the art for the Batman: Arkham Asylum comic and written by Neil Gaiman, it’s pretty much a spiritual successor to the Labyrinth and OH MY GOD ITS SO GOOD. The cgi is definitely not the best but like a good video game, that doesn’t matter as you get use to it pretty quickly… for the most eerie designs for normal creatures. It’s got some of the weirdest visuals, really good (sometimes weirdly placed) music weird and honestly really funny and believable dialogue (Neil Gaiman, no shit), AMAZING acting and I’m surprised that it’s this good with a small budget. If you can find it please do (I did the ol’ pirating but plan to find out how the hell to buy it) go watch it. Deserves to be a weird cult classic.

    And this is coming from a fan who’s been enjoying the new stuff they’ve been introducing to the MCU quite a bit and at least *enjoying* a good majority of the MCU movies that have been coming out the past year. While I know that others won't sell out as much and it's no profit for the cinema halls but marvel and disney have taken so much over the world that the movies that earn the MOST box office (atleast in my country) are the Marvel movies. Sure, there are a lot of smaller films that have a relatively modest budget that can be successful because the box office total doesn't need to be so high to be profitable. I think the films that suffer more are the big budget films that are not already part of a pre-existing franchise.
    The last time I saw a movie like this at the cinema might've been all the way back in 2019 with Alita: Battle Angel. That movie didn't do amazingly, I remember the cinema being almost empty, which is exactly the experience I had seeing Speed Racer (2008) that would absolutely bomb.
    Us audiences are to blame for not supporting these alternatives to tired, milked to death, cash grab films. After Endgame, I was so done with the MCU not because I didn't like the film, I loved it because it was satisfying and wrapped everything up neatly, but because it was a good spot to end the MCU and take a long break from these types of films.
    I was dragged into Solo: A Star Wars Story, and later Rise of Skywalker, because I actually wasn't gonna bother to see these films after The Last Jedi made me not care anymore. Same thing happened with Spider-man Far From Home and No Way Home. It was then I realized that I'm surrounded by people that just want to keep seeing these "mass produced products". Obviously I wasn't going to be a killjoy and decline watching these movies with them, but it has gotten to the point where I said to them, and this was right after seeing No Way Home, that I really don't want to see another MCU film again in the next few years. I need a break from unoriginality.

    For me, another important aspect of this issue is a skewed budgeting culture; there’s only ever room anymore for either small-scale “artistic” lower budget films or 200 million dollar MCU/superhero movies. The reason films like Ambulance and The Northman failed at the box office is because they’re a rare mid-budget feature (50-100 million dollars), which are perceived as not mainstream enough to earn excessive publicity and not artistic enough to earn excessive critical reception or awards.
    This culture is a problem because it further hampers artistic intent in film, as well as giving larger film corporations all of the success.

    Everything Everywhere All At Once opened May 13 in the UK but I haven't found a *single* cinema showing it in IMAX until this Sunday, May 22 (9 days after it opened!) because they were all exclusively screening Doctor Strange, many local cinemas outside of cities still aren't showing it. Sure it doesn't quite have the same level of demand, but if you don't give audiences a space to watch it there's no chance to create that demand or word of mouth. This is an international problem, and it's really depressing.

    As someone who works in a movie theatre, I will also say that buying food and drinks at the concessions counter is pretty much the only way we make money and that money keeps employees paid and theatres open so even if you're gonna see a big movie, try to help out your local theatre and buy some popcorn and a drink (: It's kinda sad to see how empty the non Doctor Strange theatres are right now in all honesty

    I just looked at my local movie theater screenings and it’s absolutely insane how much time is being given to Dr Strange. Admittedly, I saw it for the opening release, but there’s no reason for a movie that has been out for almost 2 weeks to still be having like 20 screenings a day while the other movies are only having 3 or 4. This was a very eye opening video!!

    I remember going to the movies the day that dr. Strange 2 came out to watch the Bad Guys with some friends and there has a HUGE line to get tickets. We were almost was late to the movie! Anyways, Bad Guys, super fun movie and I was glad to see that instead of dr. Strange.

    I was so excited to see Everything Everywhere All at Once in cinemas but for *SOME REASON THERE HAS NOT BEEN A SINGLE SCREENING ANYWHERE NEAR ME* so now I'm going to have to wait for a VOD release :(
