Boss OS-2: Pedal Mods

  • The Boss OS-2 allows you to shift between overdrive and distortion sounds, or blend them to your liking. It is possibly the best dirt box they produce, but it isn't without its problems.
    With this modification you'll be able to really beef up the frequency response and give the distortion a more natural grunt, all great for sounding like you have a massive valve amp in a tiny yellow box.

    Bravo!!! This mod really works!! I just followed your instructions to the letter, modded my pedal and sounds great now!! I gigged with it tonight and combined it with a blues driver to add extra hair in the distortion, I´ve been using an OS-2 for about 5 years and recently I had second thoughts about keeping it since I felt it didnt have enough beef but after the mod, this pedal is a keeper, thanks a lot for sharing this info, greeting from Mexico.

    I've had this effect probably for the past 14 years or so and I always thought about it as great sounding. I used is basically as my main drive pedal. Today I did this mod and I am shocked! It brought this effect to a whole new category, loving it! Thank's for the tutorial

      Cai Durkan I'm glad someone else noticed the effect of the glamour fan. If we do this mod to our own pedals, we can have hair like this, right?

    This pedal is versatile depending on how you dial the knobs. It can emulate any distortion and overdrive pedals...or any amp types. The color knob is the key. You can make it sound like a booster, fuzz, crunch...and bluesy overdrive. Rectifier tone for metal?...yes! (w/ the color knob @ 3:00). The amp you use also matters with the overall sound. Nice mod and great playing by the way. Cheers!

    Just finished this mod today. Didn't have a 33nF cap, so I used a 39nF instead. I'd imagine there's not all that much of a difference there. Sounds great, a lot more amp-y. Many thanks Colin. :o)

    Made a start on this mod tonight, I'm waiting on some components so I only did the LEDs so far. I also put in a chip holder and tried some different chips instead of just the stock 1458C. All of the other chips I tried: JRC4558, LM833n and OPA275G generated a whistling noise with the gain above about 1 o'clock, getting lower in pitch the higher the gain. So I just went back to the stock chip. Once I get my electrolytic caps in the mail, I'll do the rest of the mod.

    This mod as most boss mods have one big problem. It makes pedal anemic on lower gain and makes it bleed clean signal. And this particular pedal is all about mixing with a dirty amp to create a custom blend of an otherwise agressive gain structure some amps have and that mushy, soft clipping (kinda fake on it's own) of a tube screamer with as much mids and dirt as you like.

    So for the modern metal sound, do you prefer the OS-2 or MT-2 (before mods)? I have used the MT-2 for years, and I agree with the tempermental tone knobs, especially when I'm trying to dial in my recording tones - I end of having to change the tone completely in my recording program.

    love the vids. i've been using a metal core boss pedal and used to have the metal zone which sounds like shit. i have used a fair bit of gear and have played on and off for i think about 30 years. could you do a fix up/review on a randall titan. it's a cheap head but sounds good setup right except for lack of sustain/ dist. for lead playing.

    I'm using this pedal as a boost (boosting an overdriven amp into high gain stage). not using the color at all and like...1/4 of drive at max.. It sounds pretty decent as a boost tho it lacks some of mids and lows. I wonder would this mod help...

    For the price point you can not beat Boss, however, there are some higher end and boutique pedals out there that blow these away. I have a EVH 3 50 watt combo amp and it does not require any pedals. All I have on my rig is a Wah, chorus and flanger. No need for an overdrive pedal. Channel 3 friggin screams and chimes. I have owned Marshalls, Bogners, Hughs and Ketner, Mesa, none can touch this amp. UNREAL

    • @raymondrhee6878
      @raymondrhee6878 8 років тому +1

      and cut the signal tail...? no, thnx. this pedal start to hums when the drive knob set more than 9, with the guitar volume fully cut off and open. That kind of noise gate pedals cant do anything, it keep humming when you play or mute it. it's not the pickups, cable or the psu.. it's the pedal itself. i have at least 6 od pedals, only this one have a huge amount annoying hum at the drive/gain. And it does'nt mean i don't have one or two or three that kind of noise gate pedals. but, i already fixed that problem with some parts replacement. thnx to this video.

    I love boss pedals, i have 6 of them but the most one i dislike is the metal zone, i love the delay and reverb, tuner and noise suppressor. the distortion in their pedals just doesnt sound authentic, yes you can get good tones out of them but in my opinion, distortion pedals are there to replace the shitty distortion you get in solidstate amps. and thats until you get a good tube amp

    Truer pedal comparisons could be done by recording one performance into a computer via DI then sending it back out through the pedals- granted, that isn't as fun to watch.

      Tristan Chroma can be just as fun, though. Just record the video when recording the sample and then sync the audio from the pedal tests to the video, switching between them.

  • @LemmyKoopaVGA

    I personally am not the biggest fan of BOSS. Their high gain pedals sound very fake to me, but the thing is
    when people do these mods to them, they sound pretty amazing, and I just don't understand why BOSS has that potential but never goes for it.
    A lot of companies that make pedals, multiFX and such, seem to keep updating their technology, but I feel like BOSS just doesn't want to try other techniques that obviously would make their products sound better.

    • @xinglingtchong
      @xinglingtchong 9 років тому

      I´m not sure but that might be because of legal issues with the original circuit register or with its designer when they first came with the pedal. But some do have lots of mods by boss, depending on when and where it was built, specially those long term producing pedals like SD-1 or GE-7.

    • @ethanyong7171

    • @LemmyKoopaVGA
      @LemmyKoopaVGA 9 років тому

      Ethan Yong I never said they weren't innovators. I do however think they ride on their name and past history success for people to consider them so much.
      Their current output of pedals seems a bit lacking these days, imo.
      The problem I have with them, is that every other company out there tries to upgrade and improve their technology, while BOSS seems to have been stuck on the same technology for over a decade.
      I'm pretty sure it's time to try something different other than this "COSM" thing.

    is there a tutorial to do this? I have never soldered before is it even worth trying for such a newb

    • @43SLOWJOH
      @43SLOWJOH 7 років тому +1

      Yes it is worth trying yourself and just recently learned how by watching videos (SOLDERING, MOD TUTORIALS, WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS) and some minimal practice. Most important is have a plan, gather your shopping list of necessary components and head off to Radioshack-like store or order things on-line--rifling thru component box is helpful acclimating self to parts at RS. Also tools--iron, stand a must, magnifyer helpful but cheapie readers work, electrical solder, clippers. Just modded a Bad Monkey OD and dramatic change. Newb here too and there is bit of learning curve of soldering/de-soldering, learning the components and their purposes, reading parts swaps ie R? .47k to 10k etc. BUT you can practice on old electronic thrift junk ie clock radio or something or on small circuit boards. And then I first tried on relatively cheap $30ish Boss Ds-1 to mod which there are different mod versions out there to try the board isnt overly cramped. I put/soldered little sockets in some of the spaces so that different diodes or LEDs could be simply placed inside and swamped in/out without having to solder the actual component--just cut leads to desired length, bend, plug-in. Boss DS-1 Fat Mod (2 resistors swap) and JCM Marshall Mod (varies but diode swap, a couple of resistors minimum) make dramatic difference in sound of very compressed, treble-emphasized tone and you'll quickly start to understand the dramatic difference that only some different values make in sound quality. DO IT!!

    BOSS do the best distortion pedals on the market, you'd have to be a complete nutter not to buy any of them.
    I am a metal guitarist myself and I recommend a boss pedal to any metal guitarist that wants to use it on their crappy amplifiers.

    • @mitchell2719
      @mitchell2719 10 років тому

      The DS-1 is only really suitable as a cheap fuzz. I took it out of my chain as soon as I could and replaced it with a Tubescreamer (I also changed to a Peavey 6505+ amp)

    • @mrbubs
      @mrbubs 10 років тому +1

      Amritpal Galsin oh god, why!? The Metal Zone is one of the worst distortion pedals that I've ever own, and I used to play a DOD Grunge pedal. Boss does make decent pedals, but their newest generation pedals are AMAZING. I'm using the DA-2 right now, and it gets the smoothest and creamiest of distortion tones.

    • @TheKaneDestroyer
      @TheKaneDestroyer 10 років тому +1

      Paco Secada I understand that you prefer different brands compared to me. But when I brought the metal zone I tried it, I was very happy with how it defeated my crappy amplifier. It's great for them thrash metal, black metal, death metal performances and songs.

    • @mrbubs
      @mrbubs 10 років тому

      Amritpal Galsin The DA-2 is actually a boss pedal. And though it won't get the lo-fi sound quality that is present in most BM/Death Metal, it goes quite a long way towards obtaining super sexy tones.
