    Dr. Dray may be too humble to say this, but dermatology is one of the most competitive fields in medicine. Only the very best medical students get into derm residency. This is why I listen to your suggestions and not the influencers who are just pushing terrible products.

    Most people put all their degrees on everything & brag, but you don’t even have your PhD on your socials. It takes digging to find out that you’re not only a medical doctor, but a physician-scientist.
    Love your humility ❤️

    • @LKB1shot
      @LKB1shot 2 роки тому +4

      It’s not about bragging! All medical professionals get used to listing their credentials because it is required in school & as a working professional. It is an expectation by instructors & other medical professionals when they read your work. In the same sense, they earned it, it is many years of hard work so they do have the right to brag if they choose to do so. Most don’t, outside of work/school.

I used to get medics in the lab and they were always so surprised how hard science is, no permanent job for 10 years if you ever get one In an ultra competitive environment . You nailed your description of scientific career, and I have huge respect for anyone who completed a PhD. It is blood sweat and tears, under chronic stress in a toxic environment (well it was for me). Thank you so much for unfolding the mythical idea that doctors make a lot of money! As a Southeast asian i came from a society where most of the parents think, only being a doctor or engineer their children can be successful as well as make a lot of money. But no one realise, a doctor don’t earn a penny for the longest periods of their precious lifetime. What they do is the intense amount of study and clinical rotation. If anyone wants to make money at an early age be a businessman or entrepreneur.. Dr. D, your story reminds me of my journey at medical school!

    When I finished my Ph.D., it was REALLY time. I was crying almost every week and started relying on alcohol a bit more than I'd like to admit to... I have not had a drink since. I know that I wasn't alone but it's seen as weak to talk to others about it and if a prof finds out, that would be even more shameful. Most families won't get it: ''You're the only one in the family to make it that far. You're smart enough and you're going to ruin it all because you're lazy? Suck it up!'' They usually add talk of your student loans and the money they ''spent on you'' to add to the guilt trip. I hope that most have it better than I did.

    Hi Andrea! I really enjoyed hearing about your PhD and residency experiences. I’ve been hoping you’d touch on that subject for a while now! I adored my time at university, and I find it fascinating to hear about other people’s journeys through the system. My brother was just bemoaning the fact that while he’s been studying medicine for 16 years, and I’d currently a working pathologist, he’s STILL sitting exams. Hehe, poor guy - I don’t think while entering his field he was aware of just how long (and strenuous) the whole process would actually be.
    Enjoy your weekend, and warm regards from Brisbane!

    Having an MD/PhD is awesome! A lot of the academic struggles you’re talking about is accurate. PhDs also have the option to go to industry (my choice).
    I applied to Med school and PhD programs and the PhD programs were much more competitive in my opinion.
    I think a lot of people don’t realize that one of the reasons PhD programs are so competitive is that our tuition is paid for and we get a salary to live (for science PhDs in the states anyway) and Med school you pay to go. So your advisor ends up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for you to get your education.

    • @kristilambert3416

      Hi there. Im just curious-what do you mean by industry?

    • @caitlin7220
      @caitlin7220 3 роки тому +1

      @@kristilambert3416 Hi! Once you graduate with your PhD you have two options usually: you can stay in academia or go to industry. Academia usually starts with a post doc. After having a post doc (or three), you usually try to get a tenure track position at a university and become a professor. Going into industry means you go to work for a company in your field. If you studied cancer cell biology for example, you could get a job working at a cancer research institution, such as Fred Hutchinson. These are jobs that usually pay much higher than a post doc but you do not usually go back to academia to become a professor. I hope that helps!

    Also, law school in Canada is similar. If you get into a Canadian law school, you’re gonna be a lawyer. They refer to it as an escalator… just stay in your lane and stay on the escalator and at the top, you’re a lawyer. To get off, you gotta jump basically! It’s not as hard to get into Canadian law school as it is to get into Canadian med school, but it’s probably the next most competitive program.

I’ve been a nurse for a long time and the junior doctors I worked with are now established specialists….and I agree until you get to consultant level the money isn’t great.

    My husband is a chem PhD … he says if your not an optimist you’ll never make it because it’s mostly failure after failure.
    You’re also spot on with the over saturation of PhDs in the basic sciences. Unless an undergrad can’t see themselves doing anything else he tries to talk them out of getting their PhD. The competition for basic research funding, esp. if you’re just starting out is fierce.
