Clothing sizes, you pretty much should go 1 size up on the size you wear in your country for anything made in Asia. If you're staying in a mid to budget range hotel expect your bed mattress to be firm. Insects in your condo, hotel etc-it's a tropical climate so they will be around. Soi dogs-do not pat or feed them and be wary when they are in packs-usually hitting a stick on the ground will stop them if they are being aggressive. Speak slowly in English if you do not speak Thai, remember it's a second language for most so give them time to understand and use easy words. Respect the Kingdom.

I started making this list many months ago and it was definitely all things I had little to no idea about before I came here.
The clickbait title and thumbnail thing… it’s a weird game to play. I do have to try to make it as interesting as possible, sometimes teasing different ideas that may not be fully explored in the video but at the same time I don’t want it to be some thing that leaves a viewer disappointed.

Motorbikes on the sidewalk -- saw that a lot on my last trip to Thailand! Another thing to watch for is low doors if you're much over normal height for Thai people. None of the low doorways are made of materials soft enough that hitting your head won't be traumatic. I was once in a budget hotel that had a small step up to the bathroom plus a low door -- hit my head several times on that concrete doorframe, and the second time and beyond seemed 10x worse than the first time! (yes, drinking may have been a factor!!)

@@peteonretreat2023 Stairways, yes! Especially the part where not every step is the same height -- tripped on a few steps where one (or more) is a shorter or larger step than the rest of them. Haha. The napkins thing still gets me. It’s pretty common in SE Asia to wash your hands before (and after) meals, so I think people compensate for the lack of a strong, sturdy paper towel. Hiya Pete. One thing that I found that I really wasn't expecting was the quality of the sidewalks when there is one supplied. Yes I knew that sidewalks were not a regular thing in Thailand but I wasn't expecting when there was a sidewalk for it to have massive gaps in it, metal sewer/drain covers that are above the height of the sidewalk in the middle of the sidewalk, random tree/flower beds scattered haphazardly over the sidewalk, etc. Basically you really have to watch where you are walking because your safety relies more on YOU in Thailand than the local council in other countries.

The bum gun is a great invention, Americans don't have any idea what they are missing out on. I put them in all my bathrooms once I got back to the USA. Now if I go where it's paper only, I end up ripping my butt up,and have to keep going back to wipe. But mostly I just feel dirty when it's wipe only. Also you save a fortune not buying toilet paper.

Honestly, after I learned about the bum gun I thought that they have the West beat for efficiency and cleanliness. Toilet paper is an expensive waste. The lack of napkins/paper towels is something I first experienced in central and south america. I think that they just don't have the forest product businesses in most parts of the world. It's something we take for granted in N. America. Finally, you're correct, one has to be hyper aware when walking around a city as scooters and drivers in general are quite reckless. I had a close call my 1st time in the land of smiles-it's easy to do when you've had a couple beers ha ha!

Good episode Pete...all things I take for granted now. The motorbikes going the wrong way on streets or on the sidewalk still surprise me at times, yet never been hit in 5 years. The napkin thing made me laugh...true of course. Many people carry their own "wipes" and paper here as sometimes there are no napkins at small Thai street side restaurants.... Never bothered me as I don't eat messy foods or fried chicken. Tissues are used a lot as well as toilet paper rolls.... Good subject, but I gave up comparing Thai to US things as I don't want to become one of those angry expats 555.. One thing I hear is some expats still claim being called a "Farang" is derogatory or "bad" yet I totally disagree,. just used by Thais for anyone Caucasian or European as far as I know. Peace, Love, and keep on vlogging

I had talked about how i always put a paper towel or two in my pocket when I go out but I cut that part out. I babbled on about all sorts of stuff when I filmed this video and cut about 6 minutes out to streamline it.
The farang/falang thing is an interesting one because I’ve even heard of some Thais who feel it’s disrespectful. Truth as far as I can tell is that it’s not meant disrespectfully most of the time. Some of the first westerners here were French and the Thai word for France is “Farang Seet.” I definitely don’t take offense to it and use the term myself all the time. Ahaan farang means western food for instance.

Great vid once again, Pete. I wish you .. and more YTers .. would do a vid on the "saving face" cultural norm of Thai people .. especially since this is such a big part of their culture .. and unknown to so many of us westerners. Example, there are lots of western men out there who maybe get confused by the Thai women they interact with. Bar girls are there for an obvious reason. But many times Thai women will smile at any western man that smiles at them. Many times, that just means they're being nice .. but the man will think that means the Thai female is interested in them, when they are not. They are simply being nice and trying not to insult your acknowledgement .. AKA .. saving face. Thai people are very nice people. But I think sometimes western people mistake that kindness for "yes" answers to whatever they may be looking for. Do you think I'm understanding "saving face" properly, Pete? Or maybe I need a better understanding too. Thanks.

What you were describing sounds very accurate to me, as in kindness being there to save face and Westerners misinterpreting it.

The so-called safety deposit box back in your room is not a full proof plan! The staff at the hotel have access to that box. Do you feel comfortable leaving cash in your cards and your passport in a box that anyone in your hotel can access?
Have you heard of any other way of double locking those boxes?
    Table napkins :
I noticed the same problem in Cuba the lack of paper products. The next time I went back to Cuba I brought several full-size handkerchiefs. I used the handkerchief tied around my neck to protect the back of my neck from sunburn. Handkerchief something you can carry with you that conserve many different purposes. If you sit down and eat, you can always pull out a couple of handkerchiefs. Use them put them back in your bag take them home and hand wash them in the sink and hang them up to dry not a big deal.

True about the room safes but I honestly feel better leaving cards and passports in there than carrying them with me all the time, especially if I’m drinking. I have not heard of any ways to make them more secure though.

I use Filmora Wondershare for editing. Easy to use and great tutorials on UA-cam. No idea how it compares to anything else because it’s all I’ve used.
I film on a GoPro Hero 9. It’s an old model, overheats in Thailand and has had issues (like random mic changes when I film). Do not recommend. In fact, from what I hear there’s other companies that put out way higher quality cameras. I watched a great video last year that compared action cameras and if I’m going to get another one I’ll get one of those other brands.

Complaining about Thailand is pretty fair to be honest as so many things are whacked. Take the brand new pedestrian crossing signs in Pattaya as an example, they are so low that everyone is hitting their head on them and it's not as if drivers obey the crossing laws anyway. Seems everything is done 3 times or more and is still done poorly. I wonder how soi pothole got its name. 555555555

I try my best to acknowledge and laugh at things here as opposed to complaining. There’s so many things that make me scratch my head (soooo many) but accepting it all with a chuckle just helps me enjoy the good things that much more.

Is there any logic to having the supermarket upstairs in the Big C shops. ? The clothes and restaurants are on the ground floor and the food shopping is on the 1st floor ( which in Thailand they call the 2nd floor 🤪) I’m sure there will be a death from someone not being able to hold on to their packed trolley coming down the travelator ❤️🇹🇭🙏

@@stevierug8733really good question. My guess is they put they more impulsive buy shops on the bottom maybe? Maybe it has to do with construction style and they need more walls on the ground floor?
      I really don’t know.
